Sam voraciously consumed books from a young age due to a food shortage in the small village in West Sussex where she grew up. This diet, although not recommended by doctors, has given her a lifelong passion for books. Sam was a bookseller, editor and educational publisher before she started to write children’s books. She also taught art and design for a while, and as a keen artist she has been known to dabble in a bit of illustration, too.
After a lot of moving around the country, Sam now lives in sunny Worthing on the south coast of England, where she grew up. She has a young son called Owen and an old yellow camper van called Daphne, and in summer they love pootling off on road trips to the New Forest and further afield. She goes rock climbing and plays guitar although not usually at the same time – and can often be found dangling off a cliff in or sitting at a campfire with her guitar singing silly songs about cockatoos!
This book has fourteen chapters (or ‘Rules’ as they are called here), lots of black and white illustrations to break up the text and, at under 200 pages, is ideal for the 7-10 year old age group. Children often enjoy books about people, and settings, they understand and this one has the familiar setting of a school, with a twist to make things a little more interesting.
Jake Jones is nervous when he starts his new school and, while waiting to meet the Headteacher, Mrs Blunt, he meets Mr Hyde, who turns out to be his new teacher. Jake is in Class 5b, and Mrs Blunt is hoping that the class can recite her poem about her many school rules at the schools Founders’ Celebration (she is very fond of rules). Mr Hyde is an unorthodox and fun teacher but he has a secret, which the class have to make sure that Mrs Blunt doesn’t find out. However, with things going wrong, can Class 5b manage to keep Mr Hyde in control and make Founders’ Celebration a success?
This book will appeal to both boys and girls, as, although Jake is the main character, there are also lots of other children in the class and a good mix of characters. This is a fun read, with lots of humour and excitement as Mr Hyde wreaks havoc and the children attempt to keep his secret. This is the first in a series and the second book, “Creature Teacher Goes Wild,” see Mr Hyde and his class heading for a theme park. My eight year old daughter really enjoyed this book and is looking forward to second book in the series.
Jake is new to school, and it turns out so is his new teacher, Mr. Hyde. Mr. Hyde is a kind, caring teacher who makes learning fun; as opposed to the principal who delights in the suffering of the children and makes hundreds of rules to get them in trouble. But Mr. Hyde has a secret, and when he suddenly morphs into a weird creature after a classroom accident, will the students be able to turn him back before the principal finds out? This is a silly little chapter book that has plenty of toilet humor, nonsensical wild events, clear messages about how we should treat others, and a simple plot to get children engaged with reading. It was not on the same level as, say, Captain Underpants, but it was fun and fast-paced enough that I read it in one sitting. I am just now realizing as I type this that Mr. Hyde is a nod to "Jekyll and Hyde," and am kicking myself for not noticing it while reading. I will be checking out the other books in this series for sure.
