What could be sweeter than adorable baby animals snuggling with their mommies? This simple board book with warm illustrations feature a variety of animals and celebrate the affection between mothers and children. Cuddles and kisses will surely abound when reading this aloud!
I chose this book for one of the baby and toddler books. This book is a sweet story about the different ways that mommy and kids hug in different animals. The illustrations on each page show how the mommy animals comfort their little one and it is such a sweet and loving story to look at with a toddler. This story was really a source of comfort for one of the little children in my class who struggled with not regularly seeing their mom, they would look at the book every day.
I'll start out by saying that Mommy Hugs, published in 2001 after being written by Anne Gutman and Georg Hallensleben is an amazing book. My mom owns and runs her own Childcare Center which makes an amazing place to read children's books to kids and have an amazing supply of books to choose from to read. I can say with confidence that Mommy Hugs appeals to all children and warms every one of their little hearts. After reading this book to all 13 children today I decided it was a good book to do a review on. Mommy Hugs, even in its simplest form says so much. It simply represents an array of children/and animals sharing affection to their mom in their own special way. An example would be the mommy parrot hugging her chick with a nibble. Another would be a mommy polar bear hugging her cub with a tickle. This book is so easy to understand for children of all ages, even just based on pictures. Each and every picture says 1000 words when you look at it. It shows children new ways to show love to their mother and vice versa This book simply bleeds love between mothers and their young ones. There is no negativity whatsoever in this book seeing as it strictly shows the affection shared between mother and child. The style of this children’s picture book does not disappoint. It has an array of bold colors catching every eye that sways in its direction. It really helps children who cannot read stay connected with the book. I have no doubt that anyone who reads this book no matter what age will enjoy it but there is a grey area. I would suggest anywhere from baby to about 10/11 to be the most interested age group. Following that, the book probably won't be as cute to readers unless they are older and mature enough to enjoy it with a child. During these tough times with COVID-19 impeding our quality of life, I of course suggest that this book not be read in a setting where children and the reader do not see each other and interact on a daily basis. It heavily suggests hugging and showing affection to one another and unless it is between a child and their mother then it should probably be avoided. Overall, this book is written very simply, yet speaks a million words. When we are in the clear it is a book I cannot wait to show to dozens of children!
The different ways animal moms give hugs - a great bedtime story for a small child. Mom hugs are very special; think even with my eyes closed I could still pick out my 'mom' hug from dozens of other hugs. A very easy book to read and understand. The art really relays warmth and affection.
This is the perfect gift for little ones, especially toddlers, with it's simple words and colorful illustrations! It's also educational! You learn about what different animals' babies are called! (Calf, chick, etc.)

Mommy Hugs is one of the books we brought at Powell's during our five day road trip. It's a board book of typical length (16 pages).
The book by Anne Gutman and Georg Hallensleben is a series of mother and child interactions. There are of course the elephants shown on the cover, a swan and cygnet, a tiger and cub and so forth.
Harriet likes the different animals, especially the tiger page. She meows whenever we read that page together. I like that the book teaches the proper names of the animals in their adult and infant forms.
Mommy Hugs is a nice "celebration of a mother's love" as the back of the book promises.

My Review: Oh I adore this book and so does Munchkin! He loves the illustrations, they are so unique. Of course the story is cute too, I love how it demonstrates how different species share their love. And I get the show my love with a big snuggle hug at the end of the book.
This is a repeat. I loved it when he was an infant and now he loves the tickle part. Of course I am going to love anything that gives me an excuse to give extra hugs.
I really love this book. There is something special about its simplicity, and the artwork is truly stunning. My daughter at 8 months loves turning the pages, and the "mommy hugs" on the last page :-)
