The Basics

Close Reading: The Basics

Rate this book
Close reading is the most essential skill that literature students continue to develop across the full length of their studies. This book is the ideal guide to the practice, providing a methodology that can be used for poetry, novels, drama, and beyond. Using classic works of literature, such as Hamlet and The Great Gatsby as case studies, David Greenham presents a unique, contextual approach to close reading, while addressing key questions such as:

What is close reading?

What is the importance of the relationships between words?

How can close reading enhance reading pleasure?

Is there a method of close reading that works for all literary genres?

How can close reading unlock complexity?

How does the practice of close reading relate to other theoretical and critical approaches?

Close Reading: The Basics is formulated to bring together reading pleasure and analytic techniques that will engage the student of literature and enhance their reading experience.

You know the stuff you learn in literature classes in high school and college... Well this is that in a condensed form.
And when I say condensed, I mean it. It's a 180 (more like 160ish without the glossary and index) pages worth of explanations about the different steps that can occur during the analysing of a literary work.
It includes both theoretical information and practical examples of how analysing a work through a particular lens can work. The eight different chapters focus on eight different angles of analysis.
The book covers everything from analysis of metaphors and synecdoches, to how syntax, themes, repetition can influence meanings, all the way through how the general context of a work can change our interpretation of that work.
Now despite the wide range of things included in this book, if learning new stuff is what you're after, you'll have to look elsewhere.
Being a guide to 'the basics', there are inevitably places in this book where I wanted a bit more information on some things. However, the author included an extensive 'Further reading' list for section of the book, so you can definitely find what you need.
The book itself is quite the handy thing to have, as an overview and a refresher of a lot of different techniques and processes that we've learned during literature class.

Decent, but Greenham fails to account for—or perhaps fails to recognise—several necessary aspects of close reading. These include (but are not limited to) tone, form, grammar, punctuation, voice (diegetic and non-diegetic, omniscient, ulterior, intercalated, subjective etc.), and style (Classic style, free indirect style etc.). The six-context system that is espoused by Greenham is also unnecessarily convoluted (especially considering all it manages to leave out) in that it offers six areas in a text towards which the close reader’s attention should be directed, when in actuality these areas overlap and fail to yield analytical fruit unless scrutinised in conjunction with each other. Greenham makes the mistake of implying that close reading works on six different levels, when the levels should not be considered as separate. It’s adequate as an introduction to close reading, but doesn’t go much further than that, and though this is a book on ‘The Basics’, I feel it achieves simultaneous complexity where simplicity would be more appropriate, and excision of important information from which any decent knowledge base pertaining to close reading would benefit.

Arguably the most introductory and user-friendly guide on this subject I've read. Uses The Hobbit, The Great Gatsby and Hamlet as exemplars, and adroitly guides the student through literature analysis. Good work.

Overall, a quick read with some useful tools—the demonstration of Richards’ approach to metaphor/simile. Easy to glide through, sometimes because it feels you aren’t gaining anything new (or at least not in the way of method) so much as watching someone perform analysis.

It is helpful. I would have loved for it to provide more lists to study with in terms of what else to look for in an analysis.

Didattico.
