Meet space-school attendee Bob and his alien bestie Beep in this start to an outrageously funny and action-packed chapter book series that’s great for “kids who love funny stories but may be too young for books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid” (School Library Journal) from debut author Jonathan Roth!
Astro Elementary is a school near Saturn attended by the bravest, brightest, most elite kids in the galaxy…and Bob. Bob never wanted to go to fourth grade in dark, dangerous space. He even tried to fail the admissions test by bubbling in “C” for every answer—and turned out to be the only kid on Earth to get a perfect score!
Bob feels he couldn’t be more misplaced at his school—until he meets Beep. Beep is an alien from the planet Orth who was kicked off his home world for being too small. The instant Bob finds him, Beep adopts Bob as his new mother. Soon Bob can’t turn around without bumping into Beep’s squishy little body. Together, they make the perfect team. And Bob logs their adventures on his space blog, or SPLOG, with Beep providing the illustrations.
In their first adventure, Bob is humiliated on a field trip to Pluto when his tongue gets stuck to the ice. Not even Beep can keep Bob from becoming the laughing stock of the school. Bob has to find a way to completely change his personality, just in time for their next treacherous field trip—to the gaping mouth of a super massive black hole!
This book is so much fun and also so funny. I very much enjoyed going on Bob's misadventures with him (and Beeb) and can't wait for the next installment so I can read more of Roth's witty and comical writings. Truly, this book is sporky, but you'll have to read to understand the reference!
I stumbled across this book displayed at the end of a shelf at the library. Knowing my 5-year-old loves all things space, I picked it up for a read-aloud. From the start of the first page, it was awesome! It continued to be great until the very end. The 10-year-old who is too cool for chapter books rolled with laughter. The 7-year-old who loves all things girly, thinks Beep is adorable. The 5-year-old who wants to go to space, is envious of Bob. This book is full of humor, full of quirks, and an easy read; whether as a read-aloud or for an independent reader. Every night, all three beg for one more chapter. We even took it along on a camping trip because they didn't want to pause in reading it and a 10-year-old cousin (who is a very reluctant reader) picked it up and he didn't want to put it down either. For a children's chapter book, this book is a ten-star.
Fabulous book written and illustrated by Jonathan Roth who is an elementary art teacher "by day". It is silly and funny and manages to fit in some factual information about outer space, too. Very wonderful! Great for a read aloud...I read from it to 2nd grade today. (Some favorite parts were when we gustily joined along with Bob, the main character, in yelling out, "Gah!") The dialogue is snappy, the scenes are drawn very well. They are easy to imagine. The kids enjoyed the story and they immediately understood the CHARLOTTE'S WEB reference which made my heart sing! Congratulations! I am looking forward to reading the subsequent three titles in the series.
"My problem isn't the black hole. It's my personality!"
This book talks about friendly aliens, underwear, popsicles, Astrobuses aka rocket buses, get your tongue stuck to something frozen, Pluto, Black Holes, friendship and helping out friends, being brave, comic books, and more. This book is a fun fast read, and perfect for 1st-2nd graders that are just starting to get into chapter books. This book is a fun easy read with a few pictures, but it'll boost their confidence b/c it doesn't look like a beginning reader. We need more in between books like this one with kids being brave and courageous. My kids and I love this series!
Rating: 3.5/5 stars Best For: 6 -9 yrs old, 1st grade- 3rd grade # of Pages: 102 Clean Read: Yes. Worth a Check Out: Yes. A great beginning chapter book for boys and girls alike. Buy It or Not: Yes. If you are needing more beginning chapter books that don't scream, beginning reader, this one is perfect. Read Aloud: You definitely could read it aloud if you are trying to get kids to grab it, but book talking it would work just as well. Lesson Ideas: Friendship. Spiders. Space. Pluto- the information in the back about Pluto is fantastic and informative. You could easily connect it to non-fiction space books. Black holes.
If you’ve never met Beep and Bob before, you’re in for a real treat when you read Too Much Space! This chapter book was loads of fun to read. My six-year-old and I laughed at Bob’s antics as he searched for ways to avoid going into space. We were on the edge of our seats at times. My daughter covered her face and wailed “I have to know what happens next” each time we hit a cliffhanger at the end of a chapter and had to stop for the night.
This is a definite “must read” for any young chapter book reader! As a bonus, the last two pages of Too Much Space! have fascinating facts about Pluto.
I received an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review. But we’re headed to the store for more adventures of Beep and Bob!
I'm so pleased I got to read an ARC of this chapter book. The first in the Beep & Bob series is so funny, fun, and, funnily enough, informative.
The series follows young Bob who's in elementary school and sending reports back to our time. Beep is his alien friend. Plus there are the other students in their space school, where they have to float through the halls.
Author Jonathan Roth does a great job of weaving in some facts, even while he makes fun of how boring the learning part can be. But it's not at all boring in this book.
This was such a fun madcap chapter book adventure. I read it aloud with my 4 year old and she was obessed—she immediately asked me why we couldn't read Book 2 right away! This one would be fun both as a read-aloud and as a solo read for elementary school kids who are ready to venture away from picture books.
Bob is a fourth grader who goes to school in outer space. Beep is a young alien who thinks of Bob as his "Bob-mother". Bob thinks space is boring, but there is nothing boring about this book! Misadventures await as the school takes a field trip to Pluto. The engaging illustrations and humorous dialogue make this book stand out.
LOVE! Such a quirky and fun book and teaches real space facts but mixed in a with a ton of silly and imaginative space adventures! A great early chapter book for like 3rd grade and up probably. The characters are hilarious and strange and there are some black and white illustrations sprinkled throughout.
Bob is a human boy who has found himself at an elite space academy after attempting to avoid the academy by filling in all the answers on a standardized test with the letter "C." Beep is an alien who was lost from his family and found by Bob. Now, Beep calls Bob his Bob-mother and the two are inseparable. This is a light and humorous story about the two friends and their adventures in the space academy. A great beginning chapter book, best for grades 2-3
BEEP & Bob - Too Much Space! is the beginning of a new chapter book series that kids will love! It is funny and clever. The illustrations are graphic and adorable. What I loved the most was the way the emotions of the characters were portrayed with a lighthearted and authentic voice. Kids will enjoy reading this themselves, and parents will also have fun reading this to younger children.
A cute, simple early reader series set in space. Bob and his alien side-kick Beep are not the bravest (or smartest) in their class, but are kind, friendly and entertaining. The Beep and Bob series would be a good addition to school and classroom libraries serving students in grades 2-4. (Books 1-3 are published at this time.)
This was a super fun read! It was packed with adventure and loads of funny moments--the illustrations were fun, too! I'm excited to read more in the series.
Funny, fabulous, and entirely charming. The hyper-intelligent spiders may be my favorite part. There's no way kid readers won't completely adore this book.
Interesting premise, very relatable main character. Space stories just aren't my thing, but I can see why the kids enjoy these books. Also, big shout out to the author, a fellow MCPS teacher!
Trent and I really loved reading about Beep and Bob! The stories combine heart and humor just as the author hopes it would! Beep is a great comic relief yet also adds a wonderful element of heart as he loves his Bob-Mother. Bob is also going through all the same ups and downs that many kids go through in school such as crushes, bullies, mistakes, and successes, so that adds a direct connection between his story and the readers. For Trent specifically, the element of space and the information you learn in the book really pushed it over the edge into awesome in his eyes. Not only did we laugh and want to know what was happen next, we also learned about Pluto and black holes (in book 1) and even more in the sequels! This book is a great addition into the early chapter book collection of any classroom or library!
