Though this was written as a novel it's quite clear that the story was drawn from the real experiences of SOG operatives and as such it's as much military history as it is novel. The 'leadership tidbits' that appear throughout also give a very nice touch in conveying what life was like for these troops when deployed in their forward bases. Well worth locating a copy - a great read.
