We were bred in darkness. How else would we come to love?
I was captured ...
That's just the beginning of my tale. I've survived Purgatory, abuse, and near death. In that abandoned farmhouse I nearly lost everything, but Jacob saved me. We were trapped in this hell together, giving each other the strength to hold on. I fell into darkness with my captor's son.
Until I left him behind. She was perfect, my Alana. Brilliant and full of pain. She understood my darkness and fueled the fire. When she left, I waited patiently to find her, and in her honor, I killed men who took away from innocents.
Then I found her...
She's deadly now, a killer too, and perfectly mine. It was beautiful to behold, but she belongs in a cage. My cage. She'll love me again, or I'll expose her dirty secrets for the world to see while going down in flames with her.
In darkness, it's most definitely till death do us part.
Warning: This book is full of triggers. It's wicked dark, with created evil falling in love. People die. They are hurt horribly. The bad guys get away, and there is no apology for it.
Writing professionally since 2008, LeTeisha Newton’s love of romance novels began long before it should have. After spending years sneaking reads from her grandmother’s stash, she finally decided to pen her own tales. As many will do during their youth, she bounced from fantasy, urban literature, mainstream, interracial, paranormal, heterosexual, and LGBT works until she finally rested in contemporary romance.
LeTeisha is all about deep angst and angry heroes who take a bit more loving to smooth their rough edges. Love comes in many sizes, shapes, and colors, as well as with—or without—absolute beauty and fairy tale sweetness. She writes the darker tales because life is hard … but love is harder.
Whispers in the Dark is the first book I've read by LeTeisha Newton. It's dark, intense, and twisted as fuck. This is not a book for the squeamish, folks. I know a lot of books claim to be dark, but this one actually is. I wouldn't say it's "pitch black," but it pretty damn dark. Expect a lot of rape, torture, physical abuse, mental anguish, murder, and all around insanity.
Alana Masters is kidnapped near her home on the way to school when she is just 18 years old. The man that abducts her keeps her in a cage where he brutally rapes and does all sorts of unimaginable things to her. He breaks her down until she is just a shadow of who she once was.
Jacob is Alana's captor's son. He has been brought up and trained to think and behave exactly like his father. However, his father sees him as a disappointment, so Jacob endures his brutality the same way all his slaves do.
Over time, Jacob and Alana become friends. They're each others only bright spot in a world of darkness. Jacob loves Alana in the only way he can and promises to free her one day even though he'll have to kill his father to do it.
Whispers in the Dark is gritty, disturbing, gruesome, infuriating, and at times, even heartbreaking. About half of this story takes place in the past and half in the future, so we get to experience what life is like for Alana and Jacob during Alana's years of captivity and their lives eight years later. I was more captivated in the first half of the book, and it almost lost me when Jacob came back into Alana's life years later. By the end though, I was able to enjoy them together. If you're looking for a seriously dark romance not for the faint of heart, this one's for you!
~WRITING - PLOT - PACE~ So this book was...INTERESTING. Saying I enjoyed it seems a bit weird. It was VERY dark. Maybe one of the darkest I have read to date. It would be wise to heed those trigger warnings because this isn't a book to dip your "dark romance" toe into. That said, it was very well written. I struggled with the pace a bit. For me, it was a bit too long and slow in places. I think the plot could have been tightened up a bit. There were a lot of extra scenes that didn't really add a lot to the overall story. Without them, I think the book would have moved along at a better pace. I loved the ending though.
~HERO~ JACOB...Not really sure what to say about him. He was a super f-cked up anti-hero. He suffered a lot and did a lot of bad stuff. But my heart kind of broke for him, especially in the first part. I don't know that what happened to him excused his behavior, but it made his character a BIT more sympathetic.
~HEROINE~ ALANA...Alana's character was a bit like having two different characters in one. The kidnapped Alana broke my heart. It was very hard at times to read all she had to go through. But she was a fighter, and I admired her courage and will to survive. I loved the bond her and Jacob shared. The after her escape Alana was a bit hard to buy into. And here is where I think it would have been helpful to have cut some unnecessarily long scenes pertaining to her actions in the present and fleshed out what she had been going through the eight years after she escaped. That issue aside I did rather enjoy the
~SECONDARY CHARACTERS~ This one is fairly light of secondary characters. We have the evil kidnapper and a fellow captive, but other than those two this book was mainly focused on Jacob and Alana.
~HEAT LEVEL~ Low. There really wasn't many "romance" type sex scenes in this one. Mostly A LOT of rape and cruelty. Blood. Knives. Whips. Pain. I didn't go into this one expecting unicorns farting rainbows so I wasn't bothered by the lack of "love" scenes. The scenes we got fit the overall tone of the book.
~ANGST LEVEL~ Low. This wasn't an angsty book in the traditional sense. Obviously, it was a captive book and so there was drama and angst surrounding that. Most of the characters in this one were majorly messed up, so again, we get angst because of that. Jacob was a virgin. Alana was a virgin. There was no OW drama. There was some OM drama
~IN THE END~ I liked it. This was my first time reading this author and I will definitely be keeping my eyes peeled to see what she has up her sleeve next. This was a heavy read with A LOT of triggers. It will make your stomach turn in parts. It will make you cry. It will make you cringe. It will even make you cheer and smile at the end. Therefore yours truly is going to give this one a solid thumb and a half up.
WHISPERS IN THE DARK: Is a full length dark stand alone novel by new to me author LeTeisha Newton. Spoken in ‘Dual Perspectives’
Warning: This book is full of triggers. It’s wicked dark, with created evil falling in love. People die. They are hurt horribly. The bad guys get away, and there is no apology for it. Hardcore trigger within these pages.
Headed towards school, lost in her own world, eighteen year old Alana Masters is abducted by a man asking the time, even though it seemed innocent enough, something sent alarm bells running through her mind, begging her to run. By then it was too late, a rag was placed over her face and the next thing she knew was that she was waking up in a large cage.
Scared But not alone
She has been taken by an evil, evil man, she’s to be his new toy, and if she disobeys his punishments aren’t for the light hearted.
“You are mine. Your body. Your pussy. All mine. I am going to train you, mould you, and break you. And if you ever, ever dream of escaping me, remember this: You are Alana Masters. Your parents are Alana and Alana Masters. You live at 3412 West Monroe Street, and you have a younger brother, If you step one foot out of line, little girl, I will kill them all. Their blood will be on your hands.”
Jacob’s dad thinks it’s come time for Jacob to have his own toy, and that new toy is called Alana, BUT his father lied. She’s his and he’s never letting her go.
Creeping down to where she’s held Alana and Jacob form a bond, he's the only hope that she holds onto, both prisoners just in different ways, he often sneaks her food to keep her strong, but she’s become his new obsession.
Jacobs mother was his fathers first toy until her demise, since then he’d been raised by various other toys that had come and gone throughout his childhood. He’d been homeschooled, rarely leaving the property and only his father to rely on and the life lessons he teaches him.
“I’m going to kill him, Alana, I swear. One day, I’m going to lay him at your feet. cut open from neck to gut, and it’s going to be my gift. I promise you.”
Then the story jumps to 'Eight years later' she's nothing like the girl that was abducted, she's smarter, ruthless, a vigilante ridding the world of undesirables.
When Jacob hunts down Alana the plot picks up, nail biting twists and turns, a nail biting page turner that keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat.
Jacob and I were one side of the same coin. We were dark and evil. Twisted and broken.
‘Whispers in the Dark’ alternates from disturbingly dark to semi dark, so it should tick all you dark lovers boxes. I went into this with an open mind, not really heeding the warning because lately a lot of authors seem to be using the word dark loosely but I’m so happy this was in fact a dark, gritty sick read, so heed the authors warning because this is no cupcake farting unicorns kind of book, if that's the kind of book your after run for the hills now because this book won't be for you.
This author doesn’t muck around, nothing is sugar coated, it’s all right there in your face and you have nowhere to hide. I struggled to connect with the storyline and her character the first half of the story, I didn’t feel that mind numbing terror coming through that I would’ve expected to feel with everything she endured. BUT Years later and the chaos that came and the dread of never wanting the book to end hit me, the story flowed better, I connected fully with the characters, I embraced whatever the author threw at me, I was filled with anticipation wondering how it was all going to end, biting my nails trying to read quicker, I love that feeling!! And the author delivered that perfectly.
* Teasers used are off the authors facebook page.. *
“I realized I was as much fa toy for my father as the women in cages. Sooner or later, he would destroy me as easily as he did them. I would never be like him, no matter what he did to me. But I’d survive, by whatever means necessary, and then I’d find a way out.” - Jacob
* * * “How do you leave love behind, even when it’s twisted and barbed, stuck so deep in your skin your scars have grown over it?” - Alana Masters
* * * “I was taken by a monster who became my Master. Where once I was a girl who’d loved life and love, I became a slave—first to my Master, then to the darkness. (...) I was once a delicate doll made of porcelain skin, childhood innocence, and sugary sweetness. (...) My skin now contained an array of scars from when I was weak, a powerful reminder never to be that girl again. I was dark and dangerous now. You hear about monsters every day, but I was the real threat, the real monster.” - Nila Winters (aka Alana Masters)
* * * “This girl was my soulmate. Demented, despicable, and violent.” - Jacob
* * * “We might be the death of each other, and that was the most beautiful thing I’d ever heard. Maybe we would go down in flames, but it would be our way.” - Jacob
* * * “Covered in black and wearing a dangerous smile, she was my perfect woman. Fashioned by the devil, born of a demon, and tested through the fire, she’d come out made of pure stone and as pervasive as whispers in the dark. And I wanted her so much I could taste it.” - Jacob
#DarkThanDark Love isn't always rainbows and butterflies. Most the time it hurts. It rips into the skin, and leaves you breathless. Other times it leaves you on the floor, battered and bruised with no way to heal. For Alana and Jacob, it was the only way the survived in a world of purgatory, and linked them together in ways they never imagined. And when captive became captor? All bets were off.
Whew, this book. Let me tell you, there are triggers galore. It was so dark and twisted.
And I liked it!! :D
There will be spoilers throughout.
We have the story of Alana and Jacob. Alana is a sweet girl, a senior in high school, who, while walking to school one morning, is kidnapped by Master to be his Toy. She is brutalized TERRIBLY by him and my heart went out to her. The brightness in her life during her time under Master's control is his son, Jacob. Jacob was raised by his father to be just like him. He has darkness within him, but also light. He is confused and troubled by his dark desires, but also feels he must embrace them because they are a part of him. Alana and Jacob develop a bond, and Jacob will do anything to make Alana happy and safe - with the caveat that she must submit to him.
Alana - 18-year-old popular high school girl, cheerleader, loves acting and dance. Has a boyfriend, Ryan, who really is only mentioned in passing. Has a good home life overall, but her father seems to be a workaholic. Has aspirations to go to college and study psychology. Likely never would have developed her dark desires had she not been kidnapped. She is strong, intelligent, and resilient.
Jacob - age unknown, but I ended up getting the impression that he was maybe 16 when Alana was kidnapped. Homeschooled by his psychotic father, socially awkward (maybe a bit of Aspberger's), naive to the ways of the world, yet has been killing and torturing women at the command of his father for his entire life. His father also savagely abuses Jacob. Yet somehow, there is a sweet and boyish side to Jacob that continues into his adulthood.
The story is dark. As revealed in the summary, Jacob and Alana become killers. The author uses what I call the Dexter trope - they only murder bad guys - rapists, etc. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but it's hard for me to think of people like Jacob and Alana as the "bad guys." No one they kill is innocent in any way. What they're doing is illegal, sure, and without a doubt morally questionable at best. But are they really evil? I don't think so.
As I mentioned in the update, there were definitely technical issues with the writing. At some points, it was awkward and didn't flow well. At other times, it was beautiful and poetic. I think a good editor could have helped this story quite a bit.
There were inconsistencies. Alana is kidnapped at the age of 18, but later on says something that indicates she was taken at a younger age. Jacob's age is never revealed, but . I think the author may have started out with the idea that Jacob and Alana would be younger, but then perhaps decided she didn't want underage characters in the story. Makes sense, but again, better editing could have fixed those moments of confusion for the reader.
Another issue I have is
I liked the ending, but I will just say that it was unrealistic.
So, I do recommend this dark, twisted, sordid tale for those who love their dark with a lot of romance. Happy reading!
This is my first book by this author and will not be my last. I was hooked from the first chapter. The story is not an easy one hard to read at times.
Alana and Jacob's story is messed up... Jacob's father kidnaps Alana that is when she meets Jacob, yes he is his father's son but he has taken to Alana and can't handle what his father is doing.. But together they need to survive purgatory. I don't want to go into the story you just need to read for yourself.
Jacobs’s father is an evil evil man. So many times, I wanted to climb in this book and stab him... The story is good it will have you turning the pages. It is Dark romance at it best. If you love Dark romance then this book is for you. You will not be disappointed. I loved the writing and I was just drawn into the story like a moth to a flame and could not put it down until it was finished.
What did I just finish reading? The Silence of the Lambs? The Amanda Berry’s story?
Like seriously?
I’m shaking, nerves are running rampant after I’ve just finished reading this sadistic tale.
This book rotted my brain cells and I’m wondering if I should commit myself to a psych ward after reading this book with such dire situations.
This book is dark, it’s beyond gruesome and it treats itself as such. The characters are complex and they are beyond salvation. The plot is about a kidnapping victim, her captors, their interactions, and how she and the kidnapped son became the people they grew up to be.
I can’t think of the last time I’ve read such a disturbing, unsettling novel. This is not a light-hearted read and I recommend anyone who picks it up to check the triggers. There are some intense, graphic scenes that are painful and difficult to understand as it details the horrors of kidnapping, child and sexual abuse.
The tempo of the book was a bit rocky and choppy and some of characters development suffered as a result of this. The author, however did a honorable job at establishing the plot and the story line progress smoothly.
Even though the book gave me nightmares I did enjoy reading it and I do recommend, if you possess an open mindset.
Whispers in the Dark is such a brilliant dark read. If you like dark reads then you will love this one. From start to finish I was absolutely gripped.
One moment in time changes Alanas life. She’s kidnapped, tortured and raped for two years. When she escapes her life will never be normal again. This is told in two points of view, Alana and Jacob.
I absolutely loved this story. Heed the trigger warnings but if your like me and have no limits you’ll love this story. Really hope this author writes more dark reads.
It's a huge problem in the world. Children's pics on milk cartons, missing columns of newspapers, on tv, flyers on posts. So many kikid go missing , they either run away or are abducted daily. I often wonder what happened to them. Well we know what happened to Alana, who was accosted by a stranger asking for time. Though her goosebumps tell her Get away from him, Alana. Run, she ignores Hythe gruff voice and keeps walking, but the predator catches her She's kidnapped !! The abductors using her as his fucktoy ! “You are mine. Your body. Your pussy. All mine. I am going to train you, mold you, and break you. And if you ever, ever dream of escaping me, remember this: You are Alana Masters. Your parents are Alan and Barbara Masters. You live at 3412 West Monroe Street, and you have a younger brother. If you step one foot out of line, little girl, I will kill them all. Their blood will be on your hands.” All his Empire of CruelVille will go to his Heir-In-Training, to his son Jacob. He's a soft soul who's shell is beaten into stone so he may have mercy in his heart but is being trained to be ruthless. He is constantly ridiculed by his father into becoming a monster and treat all women as whores!! In the chambers underneath they have Meat Hook The Witch’s Redemption. The Bitch’s Punishment
His encounter with Lani Girl is very poignant and merciful. They form a bond over time, while she's being subjected to innumerable cruelties at the hands of his Dad. The book changes halfway through , where it leaps about 8 years. I don't wanna give anything away, but I'll tell ya this - in terms of darkness, it was more gruesome and cruel. There's very less heart, which is totally in sync with the kinda story it is. A horror tale of bad side of the world where sex slaves are imprisoned, tortured and raped. Many triggers for sensitive readers, so read at your own discretion. I felt more for Jacob than for Alana, if that's saying something. My heart bled when he bled under his father.being a mom to a son, THAT was quite tough for me. 4.5 Saviour & Vigilante #BookBistroBlogApproved Follow us on FB - https://www.facebook.com/groups/BookB... The Princess of Dark Play has definitely exceeded ALL expectations with Whispers in the Dark! I knew from page one something big was happening but naturally it wasn’t obvious. A true writer, an artist of their craft, can give you the hebejebes without one clue! So I had that feeling.....
But dagnabbit! I didn’t see this particular darkness coming! Total destruction. Total darkness. Totally DELISH! This chick Alana and her side of pitch black, Jacob, are masters of their craft! You must read it to believe it!
This story is NOT for vanilla or gray readers. YOU beautiful and pure souls ARE NOT ready for this type of dark play. I consider myself pretty dark and I had to walk away a few times to cry, rant, and/or regroup.
Five AH-mazing stars!
Disclaimer: This review is my personal opinion of this story. As usual my personal opinion should have ZERO influence on your experience with the story. With that being said, read, enjoy, and leave a review!
This is one heck of a dark read. I think it just about ticks every available dark box. It is full of potential triggers. Yes it's that good.
The story is written from both Alana and Jacob's points of view and is split into two parts. The first chunk of the book covers her capture and those first few months. The man who takes her isn't nice and the author doesn't 'fade to grey' or leave anything unsaid. She was taken for Jacob, but his father is too evil to ever truly share or give anything away, so Jacob suffers silently alongside Alana.
There is a jump of 18 months and we see a very different Alana. One where constant sexual, physical and mental abuse has taken it's toll but deep inside she still has a strong survival instinct. Circumstances arise that allow Alana to make a choice - either to leave or to stay with Jacob. (Not a spoiler as this is in the blurb). Knowing that she isn't strong enough yet to withstand what Jacob wants from her, she chooses to run.
The second part of the book is set quite a few years later, when Jacob finally tracks down the girl who told him to "find a way to get me back". However Jacob conveniently forgot the 'but you can't own me' part. This is where their story really takes off. Can two broken souls heal each other? Or will they only find misery in the other's arms? There are battles of wills and some violent punishment scenes as Alana/Nila and Jacob struggle to find a compromise. The chemistry between this twisted pair works and their connection is very believable. With each passing chapter I wasn't sure if this was going to have a HEA, a both locked up in mental institutes or a Bonnie and Clyde style "going down in a blaze of glory" ending.
This book totally keeps you on your toes and really does a number on your mind. I fell in love with two sadistic and evil killers. OK they only kill bad guys who deserve it, but they don't do it swiftly! I liked that the author didn't soften either of them, or give us a twee epilogue. This is not a book that will leave you with the warm and fuzzies but it will satisfy your dark cravings.
Serial killers, darkness, twisted, and F-ed up events that I should be appalled by but was completely drawn into!! Alana and Jacob are very special and complex characters. This book is not for everyone, it contains graphic descriptions of torture, kidnapping, killings, and more. It truly is a work of art because it made me feel for serial killers!!
This specific video review will be included in the July 2019 wrap-up.

This book was the ultimate definition of "DARK" ⚠️⚠️CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS ⚠️⚠️
It was on page, very disturbingly descriptive. I'm marginally disappointed that the romantic aspect was so weak. So it wasn't really a dark romance, more of a thrilling suspenseful dark book. But The MMC was definitely OBSESSED, VERY .... I highly recommend it. It was soo good.( If your soul was craving dark like mine )
We fucked hard and rough, leaving behind the rainbows for barbed wire fences and bullet wounds. For shattered glass and serrated blades. We left the niceness behind and came together like we were meant to—in rage, need, and fucking violence. But instead of one of us ruling the other, we combined, lifted, and ripped apart into bloody fucking pieces.
I’ve been sitting here for what feels like an hour trying to figure out how to write a review for this book. Whispers in the Dark by LeTeisha Newton is equal parts horror movie, Criminal Minds episode, and romance book.
I want so much to be able to sit here and go through every single fucked up thing that happened in this book but I don’t wanna ruin your reading experience. And what an experience it was. Alana Masters is walking to school one morning when she’s kidnapped by a truly sadistic serial kidnapper/murderer. What takes place during the first half of this book made my skin crawl, my anxiety flare to unimaginable proportions, and it just absolutely terrified me. I can’t quite remember being this scared of a book or character before, but there’s such a level of unpredictability that we as readers believe with every fiber of our being that anything can happen and so much does. This part of the story is told with such painful, torturous detail that to some may very well be too much. But in all honesty? I think any less would have been disingenuous to the horror that Alana, all the past victims, her kidnapper’s son Jacob were subjected to.
We might be the death of each other, and that was the most beautiful thing I’d ever heard.
The second half of this book is set 8 years after everything. We get to see how both Alana and Jacob have coped and grown up. While in captivity all those years ago, they had grown close and now Jacob is back to claim her once again. There was a slight disconnect for me when Jacob and Alana come into contact mainly because Jacob makes a few choices that made me want to scream and slap him. But in the end, it all made sense. They made sense. I thought they were perfect for each other like two monsters in the dark.
Sometimes pain was the perfect way to heal when pain was what had destroyed me.
Besides the plot and characters, I have to freaking applaud Newton so much because the writing in this book was fantastic. There was no warm up time. We are immediately thrown into hell. The writing was incredibly fast paced right out the gate and it never lost that steam for me. I had to force myself to put this book down in order to make lunch and dinner. I didn’t want to trust me. I just wanted to keep reading and reading and find out what was going to happen next. The suspense was unreal and any book that can hook me that hard deserves 5 stars. I cannot wait to read more of your work LeTeisha Newton because this one? It exceeded any and all expectations. I could not have picked a better time of year to read this book.
CW: this is one of the most dark reads I’ve ever read!!!! If you can think of a possible trigger, then this book probably has it. Included but not limited to kidnapping, rape, torture, violence, detailed scenes of previous listed actions. There is also another one but I feel like it spoils a part of the story so if you think you need to know this possible trigger please DM me through my instagram.
MASTER is the most sadistic psychopath imaginable. He kidnaps beautiful women to serve as his, “toys“, beating, abusing and raping them every day in an attempt to create the perfect son.
“I was in Hell and this man was the Devil. As soulless black eyes stared me down, his enjoyment of seeing me cry played over his features. My pain was his pleasure. My cries were the source of his completion.”
MASTER does almost everything in front of his son Jacob, the only son he’s been able to get his toys to produce for him. Secluded from the outside world, Jacob only knows his father and his father’s ways of life.
“My father had taught me how to deal with unruly toys: deliver a beating so she would know who was Master and who was the slave.”
“Would you be my girlfriend if I learn how?”
Although Jacob wants to inflict pain on Alana, he also feels other things for her, things he’s never felt for anyone. And of course, Alana has feelings for him as well...
“In another life, this boy would be the perfect man for me. But in this life, he was damaged, abused and traumatized by the same man who’d subjected me to torture. The only difference between us was the monster was his father. We were both his prisoners, just in different ways.”
If this were a predictable book, Alana and Jacob would ride off into the sunset but luckily that isn’t the case! 8 years later, Alana goes by the name Nila and Nila is after revenge...
“Men of evil, men of darkness, I come for you so you can never hurt someone like me again.”
I absolutely loved the beginning of this book. It was super dark and descriptive with all the gory details. I got really bored for a while in the middle though… There was awhile where things really dragged on IMO. This book could also benefit from some additional editing as there was the occasional typo. I also noticed a huge discrepancy in the timeline in chapter 33. Overall it’s a great book with lots of depraved darkness and a unique premise!
Well goodness what a little gem this book turned out to be. Went into it totally blind. Let me warn you, if you have triggers or don’t like to read dark books, please stay away from this one. Or at least read the warning:
Warning: This book is full of triggers. It’s wicked dark, with created evil falling in love. People die. They are hurt horribly. The bad guys get away, and there is no apology for it. Hardcore trigger within these pages.
Alana was an all-American high school student. Living in the all-American suburb town. Just got the big yes from her father that he would be able to take her to the father-daughter dance. Life is GOOD. Walking to school, high on life, thinking of her blueberry pop tart…
Jacob has been raised by the devil himself. Never leaving the house except with his father. Never going to school, always homeschooled. Has been raised that women are brought into the house for the sole purpose of becoming a ‘toy’.
When “the devil” himself promises Jacob, a new toy is coming and will be Jacob’s toy only, it’s exciting to think his father deems him worthy of his own toy now. What Jacob has learned though is that when father tells you one thing, it’s not necessarily going to happen.
The journey is not a pleasant one.
Can these two survive? If they do survive, will they be able to live a ‘normal’ life after what they’ve gone through?
Ever read a book where you flinch and wanna close your eyes but you need the light to get out of such darkness? This is that book. Dark, crazy, intense and so much more. Alana is a normal girl until one day her life changes forever. Jacob his whole world has been darkness until a glimpse of light called Alana. What a twisted insane story that I never wanted it to end. The characters make you feel so many different emotions it grips at your heart. Definitely a top 2018 dark romance of mine! 5/5 stars ****Reviewed by Sweet & Spicy Reads a voluntarily Advanced Reader Copy of this book ****
Whispers in the Dark is the first book that I have read by LeTeisha Newton. This is a dark romance read –one that is dark, intense, so very twisted, and very angsty and raw. Alana Masters is kidnapped near her home on the way to school when she is just 18 years old. The man who took her did terrible things to her; she was kept in a cage and this man brutalized her body to the point that he breaks her down until she is just a shell of who she once was. Jacob is Alana's captor's son. He was raised by his father (Alana’s captor) to behave exactly like his father. The thing is his father sees him as a disappointment so he is abused the way his father treats the “slaves” he has amassed. Alana and Jacob end up becoming friends during this horrific time in her life. Jacob loves Alana in the only way he knows how to and he makes a promise that he will somehow free her, knowing that when he does that, he will have signed his own death warrant. She leaves but somehow cant leave the past behind when she becomes Nila Winters. She left the past behind but she cant leave the boy she loved. Yet when he finally finds her, he only has one goal on his mind and that’s to finally make Alana/Nila his and his only. This story is so dark, so intense and so brutal. When I say DARK, I truly mean dark. There are some pretty sensitive subject matters in this story and if you have any triggers, then maybe this isn’t the story you should read for this isn’t a safe read. Otherwise, this is a great story, even with the dark subject matter. Alana and Jacob make a great team and the twists and turns the story takes will have you on the edge of your seat. I look forward to reading what Ms. Newton writes next.
My Rating: 4.5 stars ***** “I received an advanced copy of this book from the author at no cost to me."
Holy DARKNESS! 5 psychotic and WTF stars! Obsession, possession, revenge, brutal.... I can’t, I’ll be here all day. The warning for this one does not need to be taken lightly. There’s rape, physical & mental abuse, brutality and kidnapping all tucked into this fabulous story. This is dark chocolate with zero vanilla. Well done, Newton!!
Whewww idk even know how to rate this. The story was good, but it was so very dark. So many things I didn't like that I had to take several breaks. The ending was good. But like I said So very dark. Please check your trigger warnings with this one!
I think I am going to go with 3.75 - the story was good- the actions were rough.
I love dark romance. But I know the definition of "dark" is very subjective. We all have our parameters of tolerance and what we consider acceptable and that which is simply beyond our consideration of reading entertainment.
While I will venture fairly deep into darkness and depravity, I truly could not find anything redeeming in this story. It has one narrative and one focus. The entire story is hate-filled and driven by revenge. The events are told in graphic detail. Honestly, I've read some books border-line sicko, but never anything with this degree of violence and human degradation.
Master is the epitome of a psychopath. We are not given a reason for his horrendous behavior and obsession with using then killing women. Seriously, this dude was the devil's spawn. He lived each minute of the day feeding his hunger for creating physical and emotional pain to the women he kidnapped and caged. I will say that the author did a good job of creating the worst kind of monster.
I had empathy for the Master's son, Jacob. He was groomed at an early age to be subjected to vicious cruelty in order to grow into a demon like his father. He slowly found the darkness as normal and inflicting pain and spilling blood became his vehicle for sexual arousal and release. It was sad watching him carry out his father's agenda and become a monster like him. He never had an opportunity to see any kind of life different than what his father showed him.
Years later, it's no wonder that Jacob and Alana never escaped the mental torment of their past. Alana dedicated her life to hunting down men who were sexual deviants, then torturing and killing them. She was driven by an intense need to take the lives of men who hurt women and she loved every minute of the torture she administered. She became her own monster, judge, and jury. She felt her experience justified her actions.
The story left me feeling emotionally drained and depressed. I know there are people in the world who mirror the conscious sadistic behavior of men like Master, but I don't want to read a story like that for entertainment. I'd rather watch a documentary where I know what I'm getting into.
So, be prepared for a pitch-black story that reveals the worst of human behavior.
I love dark and twisted books and was excited to get an advanced copy of Whispers in the Dark. If you’re a reader looking for an easy, fun story - be warned, this is not the book for you. The following is the warning listed in the book’s description: “Warning: This book is full of triggers. It’s wicked dark, with created evil falling in love. People die. They are hurt horribly. The bad guys get away, and there is no apology for it.” Pay attention to this warning, it’s dark from start to finish.
On her way to school, Alana is kidnaped by Jacob’s father and held captive. She survives for over a year living through terrible acts and trauma. Everything you can possibly imagine happening, does. Master is vile and shows no mercy to anyone. Not even his own son Jacob, who he also psychically and mentally abuses. When they finally escape, Alana leaves Jacob behind breaking the broken boy even more. Eight years later Jacob finds her and vows to never let her leave him again.
This was an extremely intense book. As I mentioned above, I love dark and twisted; however this book goes beyond that into darker and disturbing. Alana and Jacob are some messed up characters. What they survived left a lasting scar that shaped the adults they became. They shared this crazy bond where they both needed blood and death.
I’ve also read Vanquished by this author and loved that book. Although I never thought I’d say it, Whispers in the Dark was a little too dark, even for me.
I voluntarily received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for Hidden Gems.
Captive romance with a twist from a new to me author. This was a dark tale about Alana who is kidnapped at 17 and spends almost two years in her captors home. While there she gains a connection with Jacob her captors son. While he has some of the same urges as his father being brought up in the most horrific of conditions he only wants Alana for himself. He becomes both her salvation and another she must escape from.
Alana manages to escape with the help of Jacob but now he’s back stalking her determined to make her his own. Alana was an amazing character she took the abuse she suffered and because an avenging demon to combat her own. Jacob was absolutely devoted to Alana and even though he’s an absolute psycho he is irrevocably in love with her. They become a twisted Bonnie and Clyde and I loved that.
This story was bloody and dark with the “bad” guys getting away with their misdeeds and living their own twisted version of HEA. Highly recommend for lovers of the darker side 🖤
My only critique was that when Jacob shifted from caging Alana to freedom I didn’t see the transition reasoning it was abrupt. I loved the shift and what happened because of t just couldn’t quite understand why he allowed it so suddenly.
