ANDREI

Andrei is a quantitative analyst.
Yeah, he knows it’s a mouthful. Basically, he’s a deep math guy. One of those SOBs who studies the stock markets on the hunt for gold.
One difference between him and the rest? Andrei’s better than good. He’s the best. Having struck gold a long time ago, he enjoys keeping his toes dipped in the water while messing with the ethics and morals of the playground he works in--the world economy.
With the freedom to live how he chooses, Andrei embraces his present in a way he could never embrace his past. He has family who loves him, but as the grandson of a Bratva Pakhan, things were never normal.
Perhaps that’s why a household of six suits him down to a tee.
Sascha’s like no other woman Andrei and his friends--men who are more like brothers to him than anything else--have ever known. She’s turned their lives upside down with her unique attitude, her open heart, and warm, caring nature.
Frankly, she’s a breath of fresh air. A breath Andrei isn’t willing to do without.
For Sascha, he’ll test the ties that bind him to his family to discover who is targeting her, who wants her injured. Because love means prodding the underbelly of the beast that is the Russian mafia to discover who wants his woman dead.
Protecting Sascha has always been the priority, but now, it’s time she realized two things.
One: she’s their woman.
Two: in their arms, she will always be safe.
Can they make her understand, or is the household of six that suits the men so perfectly, just too much for Sascha to handle?
Find out in Protected by Them.

I liked this one more than Book 3, thankfully. It makes me have hope for the last book in QUINTESSENCE.

I mentioned in an earlier review that one of the best aspects of this series is the interrelationships of the characters. I will now add that it is a refreshing change how realistically the relationships develop. That it begins with an initial attraction (albeit a very strong attraction with five different men) and slowly morphs into love is beautiful. Very well done.

And I am still really digging the characters - all five of them now, though Devon remains my favorite. It was also nice to see family introduced. Both Andrei's Russian mobster of a grandfather, and Sascha's cop father played a greater role, and it was a nice addition to the cast. The other addition, Kurt's ex-wife Katrin, was much less welcome. What a b... But I guess you need to have one of those in every series in order to showcase just how wonderful the MC is - and how perfect for the men in comparison :)

Also, I find myself torn. On the one hand it is really refreshing to have a woman who knows what she wants and unashamedly goes after it. Have to love that sexual empowerment! At the same time, it is just so hot when the man is dominant and pushes the MC out of her comfort zone. I am missing having a bit more of the latter in this series. But that may just be a personal preference. There is no denying that Serena Akeroyd has done a great job developing sexually open and mature characters.

On the negative side, the MC is still reacting oddly (and irritatingly) to big revelations. I still don't think how she reacts fits well with her established character - which means it is a contrivance to make the plot go where the author wants it to go. But that is, really, a minor quibble.

And of course, there's the ending - yet another cliffhanger. It's a good job that the entire series has been released so I don't have to wait, or I would be really peeved with the author doing this every book. Really peeved.

But overall, I am still really enjoying this series. It is a breath of fresh air, and it just makes me happy!

UPDATE PROGRESS NOTES:
99.0% "Okay, not only do I detest cliffhangers (and this series has them for every book)...but I hate MC's that react stupidly to every big revelation. Sascha does a lot of this. And this last one at the cliffie really bugs me."

94.0% "You know, as I read this explanation of Sacha's background (and I expected more or less this precise thing), I have to wonder why people who felt that way about her mother and did what they did would have had a picture of her in their entry hall. Doesn't make much sense, does it?"

91.0% ""She eyed him, so gruff and braw." Braw...awesome :)"

87.0% "I am so so torn. On the one hand it is really refreshing to have a woman who knows what she wants and unashamedly goes after it. Have to love that sexual empowerment! At the same time, it is just so hot when the man is dominant and pushes the MC out of her comfort zone. I am missing having a bit more of the latter in this series."

82.0% "LOL!"
“I’m not a Yankee. If anything, I’m from the South. Don’t you know your geography?” she teased.
He wafted a hand. “You’re all gun-toting nutcases."
58.0% "Her avoidance of this whole thing is very irritating... Stupid avoidance too, since the lies she is telling will become clear as soon as she has the discussions later on. Bleh."
“Because I’m not ready for that conversation. That’s why...”
“Why lie about something you’re going to have to discuss at some point?”
57.0% "LOL!
"So you can do that weird communication thing you have with the others. I'm not sure if it's Morse Code with your eyelashes or some kind of sigils made with your pasta, but you'd better spread the communique around that this girl is back in action."
55.0% "I had mentioned in an earlier review that one of the best aspects of this series is the interrelationships of the characters. I will now add that it is a refreshing change how realistically the relationships develop. That it begins with an initial attraction (albeit a very strong attraction with five different men) and slowly morphs into love is beautiful. Very well done."

17.0% "What's the big deal? If the lounge worked for Katrin, why wouldn't it work for Henry Dubois? Well, I guess the answer is because the author needed an excuse to make things awkward and perhaps reveal their relationships to her father :)"

7.0% "LMAO! Okay that's hilarious. "...she studied him like a Starbucks barista trying to translate a coffee order in Klingon.""

2.0% "I think the author should have used "extensive" not "expansive" here when he said "Do the tests. Expansive ones." LOL"

I really liked this installment in the Quintessence series. While it wasn't my favorite book in the series, I still enjoyed it and had a lot of fun while reading it. One thing I really like about this series is how small the installments are, yet they are just as substantial as a normal sized book. That really makes this series stand out to me.
I enjoyed Andrei's point of view. It was interesting to learn more about his back story and I felt really bad for him. We have heard what happened from Kurt, but it was interesting to see how the story changed when Andrei told it. I like the dynamic between him and his grandfather and I enjoyed getting a deeper explanation of their relationship in this book.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I will be continuing the series with the final book, Loved by Them . I am SO excited to get Devon's point of view!

Notes:

I dig the six of them filling in the pieces and all the feels. The drama is over the top & unrealistic.

Once again, I am sucked into Protected By Them and completely enamored as I get to know the characters at a deeper and deeper level. You will find yourself caught up in the intrigue surrounding Sascha and her unfurling relationship with the five men in her life. Sink in as you learn more of how the live and love.

The first thing I have to say about Protected By Them is: Wow, I did not see that cliffhanger coming. It's a bit of a doozy and of course, now I can't wait for part five to come out because I need to know more about Sascha's background. That said, this cliffhanger did not make me want to throw my Kindle in frustration or yell at the author. While I'd rather not have to wait for the next part, I'm okay with waiting too.

At four parts into the story, I'm buying into the reverse harem fantasy because Ms Akeroyd makes it seem believable and attainable. Sascha and the men are so honest and so open with each other, and communicate so well that you think "yes, this can happen, and this can work". At the crux of it though, it is still a fantasy and I'm mindful of not getting too swept away by it. But a girl can dream.

Things continue to unfold as the men work on solving the mystery surrounding Sascha's accident. At the same time, they take turns caring for Sascha as she still suffers from the after effects of the accident, and she is stubborn enough to hamper her own healing with her desires for the men. It's wonderful to see their gentle care, subtle bullying and genuine concern as they insist Sascha rest and recuperate.

The big surprise of this part is a visit from someone dear to Sascha. As the visit progresses, secrets are revealed and how everyone deals with it is indicative of the future they will have together and as individuals.

It's probably a good thing that the next (and final) part is coming out soon because I cannot wait to see how it's all going to be wrapped up.

- Heroine: Sascha
- Harem: Sean, Sawyer, Kurt, Andrei, Devon
- POVs Included: Multiple POVs (Sascha, Andrei)
- Book Playlist (Reverse Harem Romance Playlist)

SUMMARY: (SPOILER WARNING)

After Sascha finds out that her birth parents aren’t the parents who raised her and that she is actual a national, it makes the investigation into her attempted murderer more interesting. And when her father comes to visit, she isn’t sure how to broach the subject.

As the guys try to solve the mystery, Sascha is still recovering from her concussion. And they are all falling in love, despite not being able to have sex due to her condition.

REVIEW:

This one wasn’t as good as the last few. It just felt like not a whole lot happens in this one. At the very end of it, it’s confirmed that she’s really a Jacobie, but other than that it’s just a whole lot of waiting around.

Plus there’s her lingering headaches, which (per doctor’s orders) puts a halt on any sexual activity, which…bummer! I felt like her symptoms lingered way too long in the story. It’s torture!

I’m glad the headache issue is done and we are making headway on the story too. It’s definitely gonna be an inheritance thing going on. Looking forward to seeing how it wraps up.

Overall it’s not my favorite from the series. Rather slow and not very much happens. I still really like the characters and harem, but hope there is more sex and more forward plot momentum in the next book.

Pieces surrounding the threat to Sascha continue to be revealed as the men work on solving the danger surrounding her accident. They are each caring for Sascha as she still suffers from her concussion, as she's shown she can't look after her own best interests due to her desires for her brilliant men. Sasha also gets a surprise visitor that puts everyone slightly on edge.

Overall, I enjoyed this installment. It was lovely to see the men all rally around Sascha; gently taking care of her needs, reassuring her of their feelings. I'm usually a huge fan of Devon but his big declaration was not my favorite moment with him. I found it more hurtful than touching. Andrei, on the other hand, is a bundle of Russian yumminess. I love him even more after this book. I appreciated the revealing information we learned in this book and can't wait to see how everything comes together in the final book.

I thought the story would have picked up more from the last book, but I felt that this book didn't show the emotions from Sascha that I would have like to see. Her feelings with the revelations of her past, even though were a 'might' from the picture that was found.

The sexual chemistry is still a high point for me which helped the story still flow and as always, I love Devon. His thoughts and the way Serena has casted his character is epic. I will finish out this series only because she has saved the best man for last I feel like.

My ratings for this series have been all over the place, but I am honest with my reviews. I see high potential for this series, I just had hoped for more in this book. I hope for more action, literal action, angst in the next/final book.

I was waiting for another book by Ms. Akeroyd to come out so I decided to try this series! I’m so glad I did! I finished all 5 books in a matter of days.
Sascha was a great heroine; quirky, funny, and lovable (as all 5 guys find out). All the guys are eye candy and each have their own personalities, but you will be laughing out loud at Devon’s words and responses to everyday things. Be prepared, each book ends with a major cliffhanger until you get to Book 5, but it’s worth it!

I am going to be so broken hearted when I finish this series. Seriously though, it has become this fantastic little world of intrigue and crazy laugh out loud conversations that I just don’t want to end! As the third book in the series, this one is just as good as the first three.

There is this beautiful development in the relationships that Sascha has with each individual male, and with the group as a whole. It just works, and I freakin love it!

After being injured, and concussed she can't do anything for weeks and weeks, actually forever. Or at least this how it felt to me. I found the mystery about who her background odd when I wanted it to be mysterious. The love story got lost again, especially with her father in the house. Odd way to write a menage, without any menage.

Complicated

This is getting more juicy by the book. I can't believe her father came down at the perfect time. I am starting to get annoyed by the girl. She digs in and puts her hand over her ears and acts like nothing is going on. I mean seriously act like an adult and put your big girl panties on.

I liked this one the most so far. I surprisingly was ok that there was basically no sex scenes because it showed that the guys cared for her. I also liked that we learn more about Andrei’s history and Sascha history. I liked that her father stayed over. I’m ready for it to be steamy in the next book.

This is a great series. Sascha’s feelings and relationships are progressing. I liked seeing the guys realize they were falling in love. I think Andrei and Davon May be my favorites :) There are a couple surprises, but also more answers to the mystery surrounding Sascha’s past.

Holy smokes!

This was an awesome installment into the Quintessence series. The banter between characters is fantastic. The underlying story comes out to play and family secrets get revealed. Totally recommend, my only issue is that they are too short.

I started this series super excited and in love, but the plot moves along so very slowly and it's dragged out so much with not enough mini-plot to keep the reader intrigued. I'm sad to say I won't be continuing reading.

Loved Andrei's point of view. His life has not been easy and even if his grandfather is /was Pakhan, the love what they have is strong.

We get closer to who wants Sasha dead and some serious secrets are about to be revealed.

This series has grown on me. Enjoying it immensely.

Just read the last three chapters the whole entire middle of this book is completely not needed at all it’s almost like watching a middle of the season Game of Thrones episode were you just need the first five minutes in the last 10 minutes and you can skip the entire middle. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I love the growing dynamic of the quint couple and how much Sascha truly cares for each one.

I find talking about Devon’s robotic nature a bit too repetitive. We get it, he’s got his own quirks and we love him for them ❤️
