The fifth chapter book in the Prince Not-So Charming series features Prince Carlos being turned into a toad.
Prince Carlos Charles Charming is finally figuring out how to be both a prince and a court jester. But then a mixed-up wizard transforms Carlos into a toad who eats bugs and croaks instead of speaks. Unfortunately, the wizard doesn’t have a spell for reversing it. Even more unfortunately, “Toad Surprise” is on the menu for today’s lunch at Fancy Castle! Can Carlos escape the kitchen and leap back into his normal life—warts and all?
Perfect for middle grade readers and filled with adorable illustrations, Prince Not-So Charming: Toad You So shows it’s hard to live up to the fairy tale—but the first step is letting your true self show through.

Life just got a little more complicated for the Prince of Ever After Land. Prince Carlos Charles Charming must figure out how to let everyone know he’s really a prince before he ends up as Toad Surprise in Chef Auskotzen’s dinner pot. With the help of his friends, Jack the Jester and Princess Pinky from Ever-After Land, Carlos will hop, ribbit and mime his way back to human form.
Author Roy L. Hinuss keeps up with the clever puns and poop jokes in this fourth book in the Prince Not So Charming series, Toad You So. Kids will enjoy the lovable characters and adults will smile at the continued adventures of the hero, Prince Carlos Charles Charming. A step above easy-readers, the layout will help young readers to become comfortable with longer chapter books. Given the popularity of series books, this would be good to consider for an elementary library collection.
A fast read even for the younger set, this fifth outing with Prince Carlos Charles Charming proves that he actually is rather charming even though he doesn't fit the mold from a typical royal. In this book, Carlos is having the best day ever since he's been excused from royal duties and has spent extra time working on his miming skills with his mentor. But a misdirected spell turns him into a toad ready to be prepared for supper along with five other toads. Since all he can utter is "Ribbit," it's going to be challenging for him to escape. The text and images made me smile all the way through this book, especially once the key to reversing the spell has been discovered. Third and fourth grade readers will gobble this one up, learning some good lessons about being true to oneself while having their assumptions about princes and princesses challenged.
