RICH TOMMASO is taking a short hiatus on SPY SEAL and releasing a new crime series in the meantime, one set in the late 1980s of Miami that follows a young Generation Xer who plays amateur detective in order to find a missing lady he's recently fallen hard for.
Having never read any of Tommaso's work before, I had no idea what to expect when I entered his 80's Gen X world. Glad I did though, as this personal angst/ crime noir mash-up is a brightly coloured joy. As with all good noir, true intentions are mysterious, situations unpredictable, and locations are filled with an air of danger. Tommaso uses a great technique here (similar to noir voiceovers and internal monologues) by overlaying the panels onto yellow legal paper, giving the narrative an almost 'statement' feel. The art itself is lovely, with a fantastically bright palette that thankfully avoids the current trend for '80's design' than colours everything in neon. Instead we have lovely combos of yellows and pinks, with a switch-up to blues and purples for the night-time sections.
This is one I'll be following with great interest and even though I get sent the individual issues for review, I'll no doubt be grabbing the graphic novel when it comes out.
Ummm... what was that? This had everything I don't like -misogyny, binge drinking, a hero complex (you know that boy was only interested her so he could look good), and oh yeah how about I mention misogyny again because this was terrible! I have nothing nice to say so I will end this review here.
The story was pretty whatever. The art was pretty whatever. I bought it for the beautiful cover, and the colors within did continue that theme, so there's that. I also bought issue one, maybe it gets interesting. We'll see.
Another freebie on Comixology, and I just... do not like this? It's about a lonely man who finds a lonely woman and it's too slice of life/romance-y for me, did not like.
Never read Rich's Image lineup like She-Wolf or Spy Seal, so this was my first foray into his style and writings, and BOY did this guy made me a fan! 80's crime comic set in Miami!? Sign me up for more! Will most DEFINITELY be checking out this guy's other work.
