A very good account of the Graf Zeppelin and Hugo Eckener. The aftermath of the Hindenburg and its effects on Eckener, the Zeppelin company and its other aircraft are discussed in detail, as are Dr. Eckener's life after the war. These subjects are not covered in other airships i have read.
All in all a very interesting and readable account if the most accomplished airship and airshipman in the world.
Brief but comprehensive overview of the world's most famous airship and its commander: the Graf Zeppelin and Dr. Hugo Eckener. Written by a USN reserve officer almost 75 years ago, it remains readable and informative. It is a fine companion to A. Rose's recent work on the rivalry between the heavier than air vs lighter than air factions in Empires of the Sky.
Isn't it amazing that after the Hindenberg disaster, even though there were limited fatalities, that spelled the end of the Graf Zeppelin? Kind of like the Concorde. One crash and it's extinct. That's way too bad because reading the history of the giant airships made me long for the opportunity to travel in such laid back opulence and luxury. They were like the cruise liners of the sky... This was a great read.
