Serendipity #3

The Solicitor's Son

Rate this book
At the end of her third season, Miss Sophia Gifford is firmly on the shelf. She’s determined to accept her current suitor—a man she likes but cannot love.

When her sister decides to throw an impromptu summer house party, Sophia reluctantly agrees to help. What she doesn’t realize is that her sister has plans of her own—plans that would bring a certain childhood friend back into Sophia’s life.

It’s been nearly a decade since Sophia has seen Hugh Quinton. He’s grown into a handsome, charming, and successful—yet completely unacceptable—tradesman. Her mother looks down on him, her father detests him, and society would snub him in an instant. Sophia shouldn’t even consider him. But her heart won’t listen to reason, and before long, she finds herself wondering how much she is willing to sacrifice for love.

A USA Today bestselling author of clean romance, Rachael Anderson is the mother of four and is pretty good at breaking up fights, or at least sending guilty parties to their rooms. She can't sing, doesn't dance, and despises tragedies. But she recently figured out how yeast works and can now make homemade bread, which she is really good at eating.

This was such a beautiful story. I enjoyed every bit of it. I really like the way Anderson writes a story. There were some really good moments, but all the way threw the book just was enjoyable. I have loved this whole series and this was such a nice conclusion. The end was so complete! Any author that can write a romance where only one kiss happens at the end but you are feeling all the feels through the book has me as a fan. Enjoyed this sweet proper romance.

A perfectly lovely blend of subtle humor, tender friendship, and rekindled romance! The theme of sacrifice is strong in the story- Sophia feels the pressure to sacrifice for her family by marrying for money to save the estate her father has squandered, and Hugh sacrifices by coming to the aid of the man who ruined his father and tore him from Sophia just as their friendship was on the verge of becoming more. Loyalty, regrets, social class and society strictures all come into play at the house party, which is an ideal setting for repeated and frequent interactions. I loved everything about Hugh, especially the balance of pride and humility he has with his professional success. It was fun to watch Sophia as she was drawn towards him again, and the way they realized that no matter what anyone else thought or said, they are perfect for each other.

A Regency that really stands out from all the rest!

Regency's seem to be really popular right now, which is great for fans of the genre, but can also be a bit overwhelming trying to decide which to read. I love that Ms. Anderson really takes the time to develop her characters and the writing is always spot on. I know when I grab one of her books I will always get a great story.

I've really enjoyed the Serendipity series and have been looking forward to reading Sophia's story for quite a while now. With her family estate in jeopardy, family pressure, she is left with little choice but to marry. I liked Sophia, she was easy to root for, she came across as believable and relatable. I also really enjoyed Hugh's character, we get some of his POV (I wouldn't have minded more) and their interactions are always full of emotion and draws you in. I love a good forbidden love story and these two by society's standards shouldn't even be friends! I loved their friendship and felt that connection between them early on. It was fun to see how their story unfolds. We also get to catch up with characters from the previous books which is always nice.

Overall, a very pleasant, sweet regency. I enjoyed the summer house party aspect and being away from the busy London season. Fun setting, good characters and well written. Would recommend to any regency fan.

It’s a happy day for me when I get to read a Rachael Anderson book. And this serious has been so much fun. I adored the first book, My Sister’s Intended, so much. The second book kept me turning pages as well. And of course this third book fit in perfectly with the other two. I think one of my favorite things about this series is that the groups of friends from the first book have continued to interact throughout the other books. Seeing them still living happily with their families and friends has made this book such a delight to read. I loved them all.

Sophia’s sister, Lady Knave, is throwing a house party and being a little mischievious as well. If you’ve read the first book featuring Lady Knave (Prudence) then you’ll understand perfectly well what I’m referring too. I absolutely adore her character. She’s so much fun. Sophia agrees (unknowingly) to her sister’s schemes and attending the house party as her final hope to finding a groom. When she comes face to face with the boy she loved as a young girl, she’s not sure her heart is up for the struggle it will endure facing him and her buried emotions, while at the same time being courted by another…or two.

I had many moments that I laughed out loud over the scenes and characters in this book. They were quite humorous and devious. I had a few moments of shedding a few tears as well, or just getting choked up over the scenarios that Sophia was forced to endure. All in all, I highly recommend you readers picking this up and enjoying a little (fictional) jaunt in the countryside and enjoying a lovely house party. If you haven’t read the previous books, no worries! You can read this as a standalone. Yay! I love book series but it is convenient when those series can be read all together or as individual books for the readers who just want to pick and choose one or two from the series. However you approach it, I hope you find an enjoyable read and make new friends along the way.

The heart knows what it wants

I wish I could live in this cover...and in the pages behind it. I love everything about this cover and I'm so happy that it's a perfect match for the story within.

House parties are so fascinating to me and I adore that we get glimpses of characters from past books in this story. I have a penchant for protagonists who have imperfections and that's just what is delivered in this offering.

Sophia is fiercely stalwart in her decisions...and she has red hair, freckles, and hates to wear hats, which leads to sunburns. She's also quite hilarious in her nicknames for the match her mother is trying to force. Hugh is charming and smart, but isn't a who's-who in society, although he makes the best of his situation and has worked hard to get to where he is in life. Although this couple encounters many snags in their interactions at this house party, every moment together is extremely endearing and pleasing.

This book brought smiles to my face and allowed me the most heavenly escape. The Solicitor's Son is delectable from cover to cover and I'm still standing by my thought that Rachael Anderson is an auto-read author every time.

I think this is my favorite in the series.

Sophie and Hugh were friends when they were teenagers and her parents didn't approve that friendship on account of him being the solicitor's son. In fact, her father spread false rumors about Hugh's father and ruined his professional reputation to the point they had to move and start over.

Years later, and after three seasons without prospects, Sophie is ready to settle for a man she doesn't love but enjoys his company.

But then her sister throws a house party and Hugh is there, having actually been asked by Sophie's brother-in-law to look in the state of financial affairs of his father-in-law (Sophie's dad).

When Sophie and Hugh rekindle their friendship, they very much realize their old feelings for the other are still there.

Well written and good cast of secondary characters. Highly recommend!

Romance, clean; series, but stand alone read.
This was a lovely, heartfelt, honest read. Characters that genuinely cared about each other, and with strength of character and conviction, and deep compassion and caring, helped their loved grow even as they prepared to sacrifice all. A childhood friendship, that melded their hearts as adults. Lovely details, complex situation, and beautiful MC with courage and conviction, that made for a lovely read. Both of their maturation as characters leading to their final resolution was subtle and beautifully told.
More of a 3.5 for me as a reader, but a lovely read. Hugh and Sophie's story, with so many obstacles, was so lovely, heartfelt and poignantly beautiful.

This was a really sweet story. I love that they used to be friends and that it was easy for them to fall back into that friendship instead of it being awkward. The characters were awesome and it was easy to cheer them both on. This story wasn't all about London and ballrooms, but instead focused on the more real life struggles of both the upper and middle class, which was great.
Lovely, clean read.

I’ve really enjoyed Rachael Anderson’s Serendipity series. The first is one of my absolute favorite books, and I also enjoyed the second book as well, so it was wonderful to finally get Sophia’s story, especially as I’ve been wishing for her happily ever since the events that transpired in My Sister’s Intended.

Hugh and Sophia were both such sweet, kind, and good people who are truly a perfect match. I adored watching them fall right back into their easy friendship, relive the memories of their childhood friendship, engage in their delightful banter, and watch them overcome the obstacles keeping them apart. Hugh was an especially fantastic hero—one who was not only thoroughly charming, but one who selflessly served and sacrificed for Sophia for her overall happiness, even if he didn’t believe he could ever have her.

For Sophia’s part, she experienced some wonderful growth before achieving her happily ever after. I admit I grew a bit frustrated by her not taking charge of her own romance and confessing her feelings to Hugh earlier, but then I suppose the proposal scene later would have played out much differently, and considering that’s one of my favorite parts of the book, I suppose I can forgive her, even though it was still rather frustrating at the time.

What hindered my overall enjoyment (and this may be a potential spoiler) is that the book contained a subplot that dealt with a personal trigger of mine: I find it heartbreaking when widowers or widows forget their first love in order to move on and fall in love with another. I know it sounds rather naive and childish of me to be hung up on such a thing—and perhaps I have an overly romanticized view of things in wanting romantic love (especially my own) to be so special as to exist only between one couple forever—but regardless I’m still very sensitive to that. And while I really liked Catherine and wanted her happiness, I just..was bothered she chose to move on from her first husband who still possessed her heart and remarry. I know that just because that’s my worst nightmare in my own romance doesn’t mean I should begrudge others making a different choice (especially fictional characters), but I’m sensitive to it regardless. This is definitely my own personal opinion; I doubt this will bother anyone else.

Despite disliking that particular subplot, I still thoroughly enjoyed The Solicitor’s Son. Rachael Anderson is a gifted writer who writes such wonderful romances. I’m thoroughly looking forward to whatever Regency series she has in store for us next.

When station stands in the way

This is the third book in this series and it is fun to see the progression with these characters. Sophia sees her childhood friend after many years separation. They used to be best of friends. But Sophia is being courted by two different men at a house party her sister has set up. What Sophie doesn’t realize is that her dear friend has been invited because Prudence (her sister) is meddling and knows that Sophia at least once had strong feelings for Her friend, Hugh.

I like this author. This is the 3rd in this series (but they can be read stand-alone). This wasn't my favorite of the series, but it was still pretty good. It just seemed slower than the other two. Sophia and Hugh were good friends in their childhood, until Sophia's dad found her with the solicitor's son and tossed Hugh and his father out and ruined the dad's livlihood, making them have to move away and start over again. Now as adults, they meet up again at Sophia's sister's house party. Sophia is still so attracted to Hugh, even more so now, but he is a tradesman and she's a lady. Classes don't mix in this time period. Her parents still hate Hugh and want her to marry a gentleman (of which 2 have been invited to this long party). :)

I liked how the author did this forbidden love story. The characters were strong, the side characters added nice layers to the drama and relationships. This author does great dialogue and it's fun to walk along with the characters as they are pulled through the story. I loved the theme of making your own happily-ever-after, instead of waiting for it to come to you. Overall, a strong story that I really enjoyed.

As a fan of clean regency romance, I cannot help but give Ms. Anderson dozens and dozens of roses for this outstanding offering. I suspect that, had I read the previous books in the Serendipity Series before reading this final story, I would not have struggled a much to keep the cast of characters straight. I kept a list of characters and their relationships as I read. That resolved this issue. Nevertheless, The Solicitor’s Son works well as a stand-alone offering. I was entranced with how the author addresses the class system of the period. As other reviewers have well addressed the significant elements of the story, I will desist from a comment on that score; however, I must say that the conclusion is unique and surprising. Well done! Another rather unique observation is that I do not recall seeing any editorial errors. If there were any, I was so caught up in the narrative that I complexly missed them.

I love this series! I actually want to go back and reread the two previous books in the series, as all of the characters are brought back together in this one. This is Sophia’s story and it is a beautifully sweet, clean read. She really blossoms into her own person throughout the story. We get to see her grow in her own self confidence and in her relationships with her close friends and family. Hugh is the epitome of what it means to be an honourable gentleman in principle if not in actuality. I loved the flashbacks that we get to see of the early interactions with him and Sophia as childhood friends.
I don’t want to give away any spoilers but suffice it to say that I loved the character development for all of the characters in this story. Except for Lord D... but I believe this is the intent.
I can definitely recommend this story to anyone who enjoys clean Regency romance with a feel good, happy ending ☺️
My thanks to the author for providing me with an ARC of this book. This in no way influenced my review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Red-haired Sophia Gifford has never been a great beauty, and now, with her father's fortune fading away and her third London season unsuccessful, it seems that she will have trouble securing a husband. When her sister Prudence, the new Lady Knave, decides to throw a house party, Sophia is surprised to find that Hugh Quinton is one of the guests. A childhood friend and one of the few people to really understand her, Hugh was the son of her father's solicitor--before her father dismissed the man and ruined his reputation.

In the intervening years, Hugh has developed quite the reputation for business and is able to offer sound advice on how to save the Giffords' failing estate. He seems interested in far more things than business where his old friend Sophie is concerned, however, and after a week of walks in the garden, horse rides, and careful confidences, Sophia begins to wonder how she can keep her heart intact. Is it possible that Hugh could have an interest in her. And even if he did, is Sophia's family willing to let her throw away her social standing to become the wife of a solicitor?

This book is an excellent follow-up to the first book in the Serendipity series. Lord Knave, who was originally Sophia's intended before he met her younger sister Prudence, is in on the scheme to see his sister-in-law happily settled, seeking out Hugh in London and explaining the situation. Hugh is an excellent hero from the lower classes, a self-made man who feels no inferiority about his station. When one of the neighboring gentry shows interest in Sophia, Hugh gallantly offers to goad him into proposing by paying Sophia attention himself. Embarrassed, Sophia insists that he refrain, afraid of what feelings he will stir up. In the end, it becomes clear that a true gentleman would never ask a lady to give up the life to which she is accustomed, and in the end, it must be the lady who takes that step for herself. This charming story has memorable characters, and although it can stand alone, it's probably best read in sequence with the rest of the series.

Supremely Satisfying

I love how this series tackles relationships that wouldn’t normally work in the Regency era (a man already engaged to her sister, a woman widowed and falling for her brother-in-law, and now a woman loving outside of her tier in society). High and Sophie’s romance was so sweet! I loved the interspersed peeks into their childhood. I could see them falling in love even then. I loved the wit of the characters, and the journey of discovery that Sophie took. She found her strength and hope despite the bumps of life along the way.

I loved this series by Rachael Anderson. The Solicitor's Son was my favorite of the series! I really connected to the characters and loved the story line. There were a few parts in the book where I was laughing so loud my kids were questioning my sanity. I love that these books are easy reads, but totally capture my attention. Loved it from beginning to end.

I am a huge fan of Rachael Anderson! The Solicitor’s Son is book 3 in her Serendipity series.

In this installment, Miss Sophia Gifford is practically a spinster having completed her third season still single. Her sister throws a house party which includes an old childhood friend. Her heart know what path she wants to take, but her parents seem to have another in mind.

I was laughing out loud at all the nicknames for a certain Lord, such an entertaining read. This is a well written addition to the series. While it can be read as a stand alone, reading the other books first introduces the reader to other well known characters.

So cute and adorable!!!! I wish this series was longer :(

Original Review
This was super cute and a great ending to the series! While there were definitely some cringe-y lines throughout the book, overall I had a great time reading it. It was nice to be in Sophia's head since she's so quiet -- I feel like I never got to know her in the other books! I also liked how much she grew both in this book and throughout the series. I'm also super happy she got her happily ever after since she definitely deserved it. It was a bit unconventional and I'm not sure if it's entirely historically accurate, but I don't mind that at all. In fact, the trope used at the end was exactly what I was hoping would happen.

Another thing I loved about this book was seeing the couples from the previous two books. Prudence was obviously my favorite character and I love that the author didn't tone down her personality now that she's married and a secondary character. She felt exactly liked she did in her book. I also really liked seeing Abby again even though I didn't enjoy her book very much.

I'm really sad this series is over! I had a such an awesome time reading it and will definitely be picking up some other books by this author. They aren't anything ground breaking but they're really sweet and quick.

I like this third book as much as I like book 1. Maybe because Prudence is back but also because it is as humorous as book 1.
And who does not want to know what fate has befallen Sophia after reading book 1 and had a glimpse of her early teenage love who she can remember clearly after so many years.

------

It is Sophia third season and she decides that she will do her best with her suitors. She has spent two seasons feeling not so inclined but not this season. She will choose someone she likes but may never love to marry.

That is why when Pru throws an impromptu summer house party, Sophia invites her suitor, a gentleman. Her mother also invites one she considers a better husband for her daughter, a Marquess.
What is a shock to Sophia is when her old dearest friend Hugh also comes to the party.
He is invited by Knave to help managing Sophia's dad estate. Pru tells her later on that Hugh only comes because he wants to help Sophia. As much as he hates Sophia's dad of his ill treatment towards his father many years ago, he is aware that the downfall of the estate will be Sophia's burden.

Her old feelings for Hugh come back to her but as much as she wants and shows her feeling, Hugh seems to step back from her approach. Not because he does not like her but more because of their different world.
Marrying Hugh means uprooting Sophia from her world and she may be cast away by the ton and will not be able to enter any social events for her class. Hugh will never want such fate to befallen the woman he loves.
