"I haven’t always been a writer. My parents are writers and my brother is a writer, and I resisted that as long as I could. When I was 17, I hopped in a band’s van and I went on tour for a summer, and that was it, that was what I wanted to do. I ran a record label for 10 years, a small indie punk label. I did everything in music that you can do that doesn’t involve having musical ability. Eventually the music business, probably in a similar way to comics, will just start to break your heart, and I realized one day that I kind of hated music. I was resigned to thinking, if I’m going to be involved in music forever, I’m going to hate it for the rest of my life. I just stopped. I stopped having any sort of business with music, any involvement.
I read comics my whole life, so I just naturally fell back into another medium that is marginalized and hard to make a living in."
This was okay. Not my favorite X-Men title I've ever read, but interesting. I'll probably continue with this to the end because it's only six issues, but as of now I'm not expecting much.
There's mysteriousness in the employment of these particular "New Mutants" and Magik's leadership of the group. It's set after Rictor, Wolfsbane and Strong Guy were members of the version of X-Factor led by Jamie Madrox. Due to that, they kind of have experience with solving supernatural mysteries, but it's still not especially in their respective wheelhouses at this time. Or at least not in Rictor's wheelhouse then.
When Rictor asks about the team's job, Karma (Xi'an Coy Manh), the boss of them, tells him, "You investigate paranormal occurences, Rictor."
Rictor replies, "But why us? Strange, Voodoo, that twink from the Young Avengers, that's their scene. Since when do you care?"
Karma and Rictor are interrupted by Prodigy, although the reader may get the impression that Xi'an wouldn't have given Rictor a direct answer anyway.
Julio met "that twink from the Young Avengers" when the Scarlet Witch gave Julio back his powers. It would have been clear that Billy (the "twink") and Teddy were together, just as it's very plain in that scene that Rictor and Shatterstar are a couple. There might be a kind of "pot, kettle" aspect to Julio calling Billy a twink.
Marvel comics' young mutants -- and young superheroes generally -- are usually at least passingly familiar with each other. Sometimes it's a "know someone who was on the same team." Sometimes it's a "was on the same team," which makes the acquaintance more than passing.
For example:
Rahne: was a member of the New Mutants, then X-Force, and then on the same version of X-Factor that Rictor was on.
Rictor: rescued by the original X-Factor (the original X-Men), then was in that later, Madrox-led version of X-Factor with Rahne. (Also thought that he'd , but it's a long story. I do recommend that run of X-Factor, though.) In between, he was a member of X-Force, too.
Prodigy: had been a student in Academy X/New X-Men while Rahne and Xi'an were teaching there, then a member of a later incarnation of the Young Avengers. After that, David dated the twink's brother Tommy, including while David was on still another version of X-Factor that formed after this series.
So some of those young mutants know each other very well indeed.
Rictor gets another good line in this comic. The team is fighting a few dozen risen undead types who are trying to kill workers for Xi'an's company. Magik teleports away mid-fight.
Rictor: "We just lost our ride. No big deal. Let's Alamo this @#&% for the win!"
Boom-Boom: "You know we lost that one, right?"
Rictor: "You know I'm Mexican, right?"
Rictor and Boom-Boom have also known each other for a long time.
So, still some mysteriousness as to the paranormal focus of it all, but the members of the field team all have their powers and do what they can. David also lost his powers on M-Day, but didn't get them back. (Thank you, Patriot and Dr. Doom, for spoiling that reversal plan.) His introduction notes that he's still smart, though. Teen Loki calls him "young, gifted and black" while they're on that Young Avengers team.
I enjoyed a glimpse of these mutant characters at a time shortly before the Krakoa phase started. I was glad to learn that Guido had gotten his soul back.
… Und eine weitere neue X-Men-Serie wird durch Marvel auf die Leser losgelassen. Die New Mutants Reihe gab es auch schon früher. Deshalb hat Marvel auch gleich noch 2 Sammelbände veröffentlicht: New Mutants – The Complete Collection by Zeb Wells“ sowie „The New Mutants Epic Collection: Course of the Valkyries”.
