Welcome to Sarah’s Eatery, where the food is to-die-for! Moving to Camden Falls was just the start of the craziness in Kylie's life. Now she's got two hunky men fighting for her affections, more burnt food than can go on her cafe's Oops Board, and an ex aunt-in-law who won't leave her alone.
"Winters will have you giggling into your book!" And, of course, there's the latest murder that Kylie gets drawn into...
Who killed Mean Mike, the man who owned half the buildings in a popular Camden Falls shopping strip? Was it Susie, who would've been put out of business by the impending rent hike? One of Mike's jilted paramours? Or was it Tina, his strange neighbor, who seemed to be spying on him?
Will Kylie find out the truth behind Mike's death, before it's too late?

. This is the third book of the 'Kylie Berry Mysteries'. Cousin Sarah had presented the penniless Kylie with an agreement to purchase the restaurant, Sarah's Eatery, along with ownership of the entire block. In this installment, Kylie Berry is learning to cook some basic meals, but a large portion of her food is still not edible enough to be sold a full price. So, she created an 'Ooops board' for meals that were not worthy of the full price, at a discount.
She has another generous patron, a local newspaper editor, and possible love interest, that is providing her with a couple of lessons to cook as well. The restaurant stays afloat thanks to Kylie's tireless efforts to make sure meals are available,, the remaining employees, a woman baker, a male cook, all of whom provide Kylie with lessons in cooking as well. Why would people that obviously have the ability to cook their own meals, take a chance on this woman's horrific attempts at making an edible dish? The puzzle about the origin of the delicious cookies, which all the customers raved about, was a secondary mystery. Will they be able to solve the quandary in this installment about the murder and/or the cookies, or will we have to wait until another one?
This is a cozy mystery with the pov from the protagonist. From a practical point of view, Kylie is becoming friends with more and more of the town folk. Her ability to cook is improving and her confidence has improved, which carries over into her ability to investigate the current murder, and has drawn the attention of two handsome men, eagerly competing for her attention.
The murder in this installment was a local real estate bigshot, “Mean Mike” Pratt who is found dead in his office. This time, one of Kylie's ex-husband's high school girlfriends is the main suspect. Together< Kylie and Zoey, stumble through their personal style of detecting hoping to find the real killer. True to cozy mystery formula, the murderer's were caught by them. The culprit revealed themselves quite by accident, allowing these two friends to get a confession, without the police department being involved.
Kylie's ex-husband shows up without any warning wanting to reunite, or at least get her assistance to help save the business they had previously owned together. Thoughts about her ex-husband wanting to reunite:
I'd moved on. I'd picked myself up dusted myself off, and had made something of myself . . . Okay so maybe I hadn't made something of myself. Maybe I'd fallen into the best deal anyone could imagine with my good ol' friend nepotism, but still. I've had to show up for this opportunity. I've had to stretch outside my comfort zone and try to succeed in an area where I have failed my whole life. I now cook for others and they paid me for food that I prepared for them. Paid me for it! The thought was enough to make me giggle . . . I'd come a long way and I'd done it without Dan . . . He would have to pick up the pieces of his mistakes without me!"
This storyline is able to captivate the reader with the plot and character interaction. However, it is questionable how a restaurant with inedible food continues to survive with repeat customers. Another aggravation is the grammatical errors creeping in. There were more grammar issues in this installment than remember noticing in the previous ones. they are a bit distracting momentarily. However, the quirky characters, the twist, and turns in the plot, the interactions between the members of the community, and the camaraderie within the restaurant enticed me to get better acquainted this zany cast more fully. With all her duties at the restaurant, it makes you wonder where Kylie finds the time to join Zoey in questioning people for means, motives, and/or opportunities in regard to the recent murder. True to cozy mystery formula, the heroine and her trusty side-kick, Zoey, are investigating the case in order to clear Suzie's name this time. Will they succeed?
All in all, this is a CLEAN mystery, that is able to stand on its own, and concludes with a H.E.A. regarding solving the murder mystery. However, it will make more sense if the series is read in order.
Poor Kylie! Nothing seems to go her way. Her boiler breaks, her cooking is awful (& she owns a cafe!), & her friend is accused of murder! While I cannot understand how she can’t cook food from a recipe, her endeavors do create quite a few comic moments. No spoilers — but, it looks like her love life might be picking up in the future. This is a fun series.
Kylie Berry is back and she's got problems! Her boiler is shot and the problems just keep coming. Getting it repaired is going to cost an arm and a leg, and well...she just doesn't have the money for it. She's struggling to get Sarah's Eatery on its feet, but that's no easy task when she's not exactly a world-class chef. But she does what she can, and it's not all bad. When one of her friends, Susie, is seen and heard having an argument with her landlord, and then he ends up dead all things and quite a few fingers, points to Susie. Kylie and her friend Zoey embark on a mission to prove her innocence. At the same time, Kylie will work to keep her cafe in the black (or at least get it there), fend off her former in-laws and keep herself out of harm's way when danger comes creeping. Should be pretty easy, right? A Berry Clever Corpse: A Laugh-Out-Loud Kyle Berry Mystery by A.R. Winters is the first book that I have read by this author, but it is one I thoroughly enjoyed. The author promises me laugh-out-loud and I got laugh-out-loud. I am an avid fan of cozy mystery novels and this book absolutely hits the spot. Kylie is such a fun character. She has two men who are interested in her, her ex is looking to pop back up in town and it seems that she has lots on her plate. I like that she is working on bettering herself. She struggles with some of her cooking and baking, but she never lets it keep her down. She has such a soft heart and a generous spirit. I would absolutely LOVE to have her as a friend. Normally, I pride myself very much on figuring out who the killer is before the end of the book. The author keeps me guessing and wondering up until the big reveal. Okay, let's be honest. I was too engaged in the story to really care who the real murderer was for a good while. When Kylie becomes obsessed with figuring out who baked those amazing cookies, that's all I wanted to know too. LOL! While I truly enjoyed this book there are some issues with it. There are some places of where words are misspelled and others where words are missing. While this does bother me a bit, it is nothing so egregious that it detracts from the story in any way. This is a fun story, with lots of great characters. All in all, I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. Despite this being the first book that I have read by this author and this series, there was no need for me to have read any of the previous books to truly understand what was going on. The author makes this a fun story with several laugh-out-loud moments. I love the character development throughout the story and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. I highly recommend this book.
I have read all of the Tiffany Black novels and have now moved onto the Kylie Berry novels. They are such a relaxing read. Just enough suspense to keep me interested but doesnt keep me up all night thinking about who did it. I cant put them down once I start. Highly recommend any of AR Winters work.
This is the perfect cozy mystery to keep you occupied on a Sunday afternoon, with each book we get to know the characters better and fall in love with them even more. Kylies ex fiance finally makes an appearance however she is more concerned about finding the murder and it not being Susie but geeze I don't know it doesn't look so good for her. One of the few distractions in this book is how she has started to make things pretty well on her own and would have liked her 2 boyfriends to maybe help her a bit more but it doesn't distract from the story its just me and I can not wait to read more in this series!
Very entertaining mystery of Kylie berry series. This one Kylie and her friend Zoey tries to help a friend who been accused of murder. In the must of investigating , Kylie befriends a homeless person whom she let stay in her cafe one night when it was cold outside, made several types of baked cookies for Kylie as a thank you. Customers loved the cookies and Kylie and Zoey are on the hunt to find the missing homeless person who bake the cookies in hope of hiring the person .
Kylie's cooking is much improved since the first book in this series, thank goodness! Business is finally picking up for Sarah's Cafe.
However, she can't seem to move forward with Joel or Brad in her personal life. Ah, well maybe Book#4. And besides, the characters in this series are too much fun to let go...
This is the second book I have read in this series. I enjoyed reading this book much more. Although, the story line is not of my preference; to someone who does enjoy the story, I believe they will enjoy the read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I have been reading this series and have really enjoyed them. Another good story. They are light reads. This particular one was poorly edited. Missing words, wrong order. The author seems to have a sense of humor but doesn’t give her characters much of one. I really enjoy Zoey, the sidekick. She’s a bit quirky and mysterious. Fun read
I have always enjoyed the books written by this author and she never disappoints. The camaraderie between the characters is always entertaining and the murders never get old! There's no romance but plenty of funny moments via Kylie!
I'm really enjoying this series of A.R. Winters books. I've enjoyed the clever plot details, character traits of Kylie (we could learn from her), and even laughed out loud at times.
Crazy things sure do happen to Kylie. Some good and some really bad. I enjoyed this particular story because of the twist and turns. What horrible women that are in this story.
My first book so I obviously missed some of the backstory on how Zoey and Kylie find themselves solving murders, but other than some references back to the earlier books, this one isn't too dependent on reading those.
I'm not familiar with small town life, but I don't think it is as easy as it looked to solve a crime, but the story was cute and the characters were sweet. Kylie seems a little naive, but she means well. Not sure what Zoey does, but if you need to hide a body, she's your gal. Just the sidekick you would want as your bestie. The murder wasn't overly complicated, but then again, if those involved didn't make it easy for them, I'm not sure they could actually be 100% confident they have the right person.
This was a good book to lighten up with after I had been reading thru a bunch of heavy psychological mysteries. I love those books but I need a breath of comedy every so often. Besides, those other books keep me up all night trying to figure out who did what. This one had lots of fun episodes but also a good mystery too. I was still trying to figure out The who was responsible when I got to the almost last chapter. I am going to have to take another look at some more of this author’s work.
I have to say I did enjoy this book but it wasn't my usual cup of tea. It was #3 in a series but the first one I've read. The main characters, Kylie and her best friend Zoey, were an unlikely duo trying to solve a murder of a very unlikable man who was killed when his scarf got caught in a paper shredder. The side plot theme of Kylie trying to learn how to cook to keep her cafe in the black was pretty funny. But the whole story was so far fetched I doubt I will read any more in the series.
Fun and entertaining clean cozy mystery set in a café in a small town. Kylie rolled into town after a crappy marriage dissolved and is now running her cousin’s café, but she does not know how to cook. Many of the townspeople step up to help her learn to cook and also help her solve the murder mysteries she gets involved in. She has two men that are romantically interested in her and she hopes one of the relationships progresses forward. The book needs to have some better editing, but if you can get past that it is a decent read.
As owner of Sarah's eatery, the Main Street cafe in Camden Falls, Kylie Berry is working hard learning to cook. She may have lots of entrees for her OOPS board of discounted food mistakes but she is making progress in adding an item or two to her "almost" full price menu.
Though when her friend Susie is suspected of murder Kylie and Zoey begin their investigation to find the real murderer.
I enjoyed this well-plotted, cozy mystery filled with humorous situations and endearing moments that exist in Kylie's day-to-day and a complimentary cast of characters.
I cannot do another book in this series. First book was cute and set a foundation. Girl gets divorced, is homeless and is all but hopeless financially. Her cousin signs over her multimillion dollar restaurant to be run by her while said cousin chases love elsewhere. She cannot cook and can’t hire one. Yada, yada, yada. There you have the plot to every book. Oh and the whole town is slowly being murdered. I do not recommend this book. I skipped to the end. Could barely finish.
This is my first time reading Ms. Winters books and I loved it! There were lots of laughs, a little romance, mystery and lots of food! I enjoyed the characters and all of the banter. Didn't have any trouble following along even they referenced earlier mysteries. Just made me want to go back and read the earlier books.
I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
Book 3 of this fast-paced cozy mystery series. When a bully landlord turns up dead the finger is pointed toward Kylies' hairstylist. Needless to say, Kylie and Zoey have to figure who is guilty. Kylie seems to improve her self-confidence and cooking skills. I like her various characters. I am not a fan of how she supposedly runs her cafe. Hire a cook! This series needs to be read in order. A keeper.
Kylie is penniless, doesn’t know how to cook. Has a cafe, a building with tenants. First disaster the boiler goes out, her meals are another disaster. She comes up with a good gimmick to use while trying to learn how to cook. Murder of a guy who owns half the building in a mall. Has several suitors, trying to help her. A fun book and series, with the twist of a murder
It's a hilarious book, loved it like the first book, Kylie the owner of a cafe, who has to learn to cook, she gets help from some of her regular customers and friends, from everything baking & cooking to getting heat. Mainly it's a fun book. Enjoy everyone, won't giveaway the plot.
I was so looking forward to this read, but each time I read a bit of it my brain starts to zonk out. The two amateur sleuths in this are likeable enough from what I’ve read, although not memorable. From what I’ve trudged through I can say that the plot and characters didn’t spark as I would have liked.
This is the 3rd in the series but the first time reading this author. The main character, Kylie owns a diner but doesn't know how to cook. She is learning and getting better every day. When a jerk named Mike gets murdered, it is her friend Suze who everyone thinks did it. So she and her other friend Zoey start to look into it. Can they figure it out before someone gets them ?
Kylie's cafe is a local hang-out for special friends. Kylie is learning how to cook and manage to keep the business afloat as she struggles to make a go of it. Then there's a murder and against better judgement she and Zoey decide to try to solve the case. Very entertaining and fun to read.
A very delightful, humorous cozy mystery. Kylie and her best friend, Zoey, attempt to clear the name of another friend who is accused of murder. In the process they manage to get involved in many humorous situations, introduce us to a variety of local characters, and help people who are down and out.
Oh my goodness, it's all going on for Kylie. What with the boiler breaking down, news her ex is coming to town, her ex in-laws driving her mad, surely nothing else bad can happen -- wrong. A dead body is what can happen!
So we now have fun and games following poor Kylie trying to solve everything, and did I say she is also learning to cook?
Kylie and Zoey are great characters whose lives might seem simple based on their respective careers. However, murder and mystery has a way of tumbling into their paths. Now add a handsome law officer, a cute newspaperman and other odd characters and you have a great book. I am looking forward to the novel in this sequel.
Four percent into this and I felt like I had started a story already in progress. Shame on me its the third book of a series I haven't read. I did like the book. I probably would have given it a higher rating if I read this in order. What is a lady to do except get the two first books. I will probably be updating this review.
I really enjoyed the comfort of the book, the characters made me laugh and at times feel sorry for them. I think we all know a Clara and Betty which made it more fun. I would have liked to have known a little more about Suzie as I'm guessing she isn't as whimpy as she has been made out.
