I am not the target audience for these stories, but I did try to be objective. I averaged my scores and ended up just shy of 2.5 Stars, which I think is reasonable for a collection of short story romances, averaging less than 50 pages per story. I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Story by story specific reviews are below:
First Things First By Susanne Dietze, 1.5 stars: This is a second-chance story, where the h&h are reunited after 5 years of separation. I am not sure that I bought into the reason for separation and them staying apart for so long, that aside it was a cute enough story that I am sure would appeal to those who like inspirational romance stories. This was very short, but there were MAJOR issues with the subplot, which involved missing three dozen head of cattle. This was set in 1870's Texas, aka the Wild West. Trusting God for answers does not mean "don't use your head and don't investigate." Stealing cattle means stealing food and cutting your chance of survival. Any man, regardless of their faith, would not be resting until the problem was solved, rather than unearthing the truth by pure happenstance.
A Most Reluctant Bride By Cynthia Hickey, 2.5 Stars: This was a friends-to-lovers trope, sort of second chance, after some time apart. I believed in their separation more than the first because she was only 14 then, and he saw her as a child. I thought this one felt more true to time. I still had some “yeah right” moments, but they were primarily reserved to relatively minor details. There was definitely much more common sense here. For example, when a fox is stealing eggs from the coop, the heroine grabs a gun to get the fox. That led to a moment best forgotten, but at least her actions made sense.
Weeping Willow By Marcia Gruver, 3.25 Stars: I am not sure if I am just starting to get into these, but each seems to be better than the last story. This story took place over a series of years that basically covered the American Civil War. The writing was strong, and the dialogue seemed period appropriate, along with the research. For the time it spanned and the heavy themes that were covered in it, it worked much better than expected in the novella format. Still, it would have been much better as a grand, sweeping sort of novel.
His Anchor By Carrie Fancett Pagels, 2.5 Stars. The locale is what interested me the most, having visited Mackinac Island before and it’s recognizable buildings, such as the Grand Hotel. The romance was not very well developed, but I did feel for Sadie, who was in desperate straights. She had some real-life struggles that made her relatable.
After the Ball By Martha Rogers, 2.25 Stars. Another OK short story. This one takes place in the 1900s, not sure of exact year. There are cars in it. I didn’t find it particularly compelling. This had conflicting worlds between Dallas and ranch about an hours drive from it. In the city, there was the oil business and snooty society. The conflict and resolution did not have much to it.
Lighter Than Air By Lorna Seilstad, 2.75 Stars. This was the type of story I was expecting when I realized I was reading a group of short stories of Christian Historical Romances. This was a second chance story with the reason for their separation being his disbelief in God. Six years later he’s seen the light and they can trust in each other. He is a meteorologist and she is the principal of a girl’s school. It was sweet and contained and did what it could in 50ish pages.
In Due Season By Connie Stevens, 3 Stars. This one was a little weird for me because it took place very near where I grew up. It was a fictional town, but it was set in actual counties, and there appeared to be real research put into it. Not that the others haven’t had it, but I was a bit surprised at the the last names used being common in this area. There was a plot hole with what the future holds and not much time spent with the main couple together, but I thought their reactions seemed genuine. Not sure I appreciate the reason driving them apart in the first place, but it was a decent story for 50ish pages.
Heartfelt Echoes By Jennifer Uhlarik, 2 Stars. I had problems with the plot, which was quite holey, and the reasons that kept them apart, needing a second chance. Both MCs are deaf. They both have issues with parents who have been selfish and are repenting. I am not sure if this would bother people that are reading this for the Christian parts, but I thought it ironic for the father to say he’d quit drinking if God brought his son back just once. I guess my thoughts are if you’re going to make a deal with God, you need to start delivering on your end first. In other words, just stop drinking. Oh yeah, at least we are told he stops, but I always have issues when alcoholism is treated so simply. Ultimately, this one felt the least resolved thus far.
Prescription for Love By Erica Vetsch, 2.5 Stars. This one featured a doctor and nurse pairing that was another second chance story. I thought it was interesting with regards to the setting, but it definitely needed more pages for the story. I liked the hero quite a bit.
It's always a treat for me to read a romance collection from Barbour books. 9 stories in one collection and usually a chance to discover at least one new to me author in these collections is a great bargain. This collection featured couples discovering their first love a second time, First Love Forever is highly recommended by me! Pub Date 01 Apr 2018 I received a copy of this book from Barbour Publishing, Inc. through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own.
Sweet stories of love lost and found. Each author brings a very different love story that captures the heart and shows how love is discovered in various ways. I enjoyed these stories. I received a copy of this book from the authors and publisher and this is my personal and honest opinion.
Georgie is at the courthouse with her father as one of their neighbors is suing him. Non other than her first love Ward is the neighbors lawyer. Nothing like coming back to town to start your own Lawyer’s office and run into Georgie first hand.
Ward starts coming around Georgie more but the town still thinks he is of the low life caliber due to his alcoholic parents. When his mother has embarrassed him enough will she change her ways? Will he and Georgie come back together.
These characters were great I love how Georgie is really independent and Ward stands his ground a little but scared at times of the future. I look forward to reading more by Susanne Dietze
A Most Reluctant Bride by Cynthia Hickey
Maggie is about to lose the farm her father worked so hard to keep going. He has now passed and her mother wants to move back to Boston. Zach has learned of this and came up with a business proposal. They marry for Maggie to keep the farm and Zach to finally have a ranch he has been longing for.
He really adores Maggie but at times she is unsure and wanders why he really married her. Could it really be fore love?
Maggie and Zach are great together. The banter is funny at times and her mom well, I didn’t care her much as the way she treated Maggie and wanted to leave. But that made the story. I really enjoyed it.
Weeping Willow by Marcia Gruver
Willow has loved Julian since she was 9 years old and defended her from the other boys. Even though she is 17 he still thinks of her as a child but yet he knows she is pretty.
Julian decides to join the war as he is apposed to slavery but he does fight for the South. He asks for Willow to write and one they do. One day he comes back and is hurt and decides to come home to get better. While there he and Willow get close. He is ready to head back and ask her to wait. Her other best fiend joins the war efforts as well and now both men are gone.
Julian is missing and they think he is dead. Willow fights her mom to wait and wait but then decides she better marry her best friend if Julian is never coming home. Will it be too late for real love?
I like this story the most I think as the author brings out some issues the slaves had at that time. Some family did treat their slaves like family and not “slaves.” While others were awful. We see a family split apart and Willow trying to bring them back together.
I am looking forward to reading more by this author.
His Anchor by Carrie Fancett Pagels
Sadie has been trying to take care of her mother and siblings while her father is off doing god knows what. They struggle and she hopes the man she has been dating for a while is about to propose but he has other ideas. She just wants to get away from the way they live. Robert her best friends uncle comes to her aid and saves her from ruin by her so called boyfriend.
Fast forward several years…With her father missing and her mothers death she has to work in a pup to try and make enough to put money on the table. She has no clue Robert has returned after all these years. She quits after the owner of the pup doesn’t pay her and uses the wages to pay her father’s debt. Robert helps the family as she is trying to find their father. Will she let Robert keep helping and love her and will she find her father?
A lovely story of second chances and forgiveness. Sadie has it rough and all she cares about is finding love and talking care of her siblings. The plot was great and the characters were well developed.
After the Ball by Martha Rogers
Chase helps his father in Dallas most of the year with the oil business. For two months during the summer he goes to his grandfather’s ranch which he lovers. He has been doing this for years and would love to take over. He would also love to make Susannah, the foreman’s daughter, his wife.

When Chase ask her to the ball in Dallas she says she will go but can she make it through the night?
These two characters were great and Chase’s grandparents where run to read about.
Lighter Than Air by Lorna Seilstad
Titus falls from his hot air balloon right into Ella’s boarding school yard. She is shocked when she finds out it is him. She doesn’t want him anywhere near her.
After he can get up and move a bit he goes to see Ella and they talk about where he will stay and he seems to think she still likes him. He saves the house from a fire and they give him a dinner which was fun to read as he went against the “normal rules of eating” and used the wrong fork, picked things up with his hands etc to annoy Ella which it worked. He also saved everyone from a Tornado that came through. The more he does the more Ella is finding it hard to stick to her own rules.
Can these two work things out before he gets the balloon fixed and leaves? Will Opal’s mom come back and find the Titus still at the school?
Loved all these characters and what was best is Ella loving Jane Austen it was nice to see some references in this story. There are some things readers will learn from the weather to ballooning.
A great read.
In Due Season by Connie Stevens
Leah is a bit shocked that her dad is remarrying but her father wants to send her to School of Pharmacy so she can take over the business. She would gladly like to go and try to forget the man who left her 15 years ago.
Gareth has been going from job to job until he met Orsen Dansby and now works for him. He heard that his mother or the same name as his mother was at a hospital in town. He had to go see for himself after all these years of her leaving.
His father passed a little bit ago and got the letter asking him to go back to Whitley and take up the land and home or sell it. When he sees Leah again he asks her to listen to the reason he left. Will she listen or keep being the spinster in town? Gareth and Leah were great and the way he took care of his mother and told her about Jesus and read the Bible really touched a cord. A lovely read that anyone would love.
Heartfelt Echoes by Jennifer Uhlarik
Travis was called to Virginia City by Millie’s mother saying they needed him. Millie is deaf just like Travis but she can’t read lips like he can.
She is tripped by a boy coming out of he mercantile with some medicine for her mom and cuts her had. No one understands here even the men that work for her step father. When she sees Travis she is horrified as she is now different from the surgery she had to get her hearing better. It left her scared. Travis didn’t want her back when and she knows he doesn’t want her now after the horrid look on face when he saw her.
Will Millie let Travis look after her and help her if something happens to her mom? Or will there be more sinister things going on?
I liked this story because of the twists and turns it had. I won’t spoil the story but you will be on the edge of your seat on this one. Characters were great and plot really good.

I adored these two and the back ground of the Yellow Fever as interesting to read. The love these two share and the compassion is priceless. A wonderful feel good read.
What’s better than another fabulous romance collection from Barbour Publishing? How about one that’s full of stories of one of my favorite romance threads? Second chances at first love.
There are nine (yep, you read that right, NINE) novellas in the First Love Forever Romance Collection. And yes, I could review all nine, but we’d be here a while so instead, I’ll highlight a few of my favorites.
“A Most Reluctant Bride” by Cynthia Hickey was probably my favorite out of the nine (but it was a very close race between three of these stories for that top spot. In this story, Maggie Spoonmore marries a man she had a major crush on as a girl. As Maggie and Zach spend their days together as a married couple, her feelings return. Unfortunately, Zach only married her for the ranch. Maggie and Zach are great together. Zach respects and understands where Maggie’s talents lie (which is not in the running of the house) and wants her by his side.
Jennifer Uhlarik takes a bit of a different approach with a hearing-impaired hero and heroine in “Heartfelt Echoes.” A misunderstanding has kept distance between these two but when Millie’s mother sends for Travis McCaffrey, he wastes no time in coming to Millie’s rescue. But she’s not the same girl he remembers from school and something sinister is going on at her home.
Appropriately titled “First Things First,” as Susanne Dietz’s novella is the first in the collection, when Ward Harper returns to town, Georgie Bridge is both shocked and dismayed. Shocked because Ward is back, dismayed because he’s representing a man in a case against her father. With plenty of brothers and one of them in trouble, the Bridge’s turn to Ward for assistance. Can Ward crawl out of the shadows of his parents and be the man Georgie deserves?
That’s only a third of the stories in this collection. Each novella is on the longer side but still the right amount to kick back and finish in in one evening. It may introduce you to a new author and it could even re-introduce you to some characters you’ve seen before (as is the case with the stories from Carrie Fancett Pagels and Erica Vetsch).

These novella collections are wonderful for busy days, vacations and just anytime you want to have a good read. Contributions by wonderful Christian authors make them even more special. You can pick it up to read one story, lay it down and come back another day to catch up with another author.
*My thanks to Barbour Publishing for a copy of this book. I was not expected to leave a review and all opinions are my own.
What I loved: I particularly loved Heartfelt Echoes, Lighter than Air, and After the Ball. Each story had its own merit, and who doesn't love with those first crushes become long-lasting relationships that hold through the test of time.
Favorite Character: I really loved Travis and Millie from Jennifer Uhlarik's story Heartfelt Echoes. The obstacles they overcome and the relationship they share makes my heart swoon.
Who would like this: Anyone who likes quick historical romance reads. Each story took me a little over an hour to read, which made the weeks when I didn't have time for a full-on book at least bearable.
Rating and Why: I gave this a three-and-a-half star rating because while I did really enjoy several of the stories, there were also two that I really just did not enjoy at all. And in a rare exception, I completely skimmed one and never read the whole story. With all collections, you have a mix of writing styles and skill levels, but this one had more than I am accustomed to as far as did not appeal to me. Reading is completely subjective so you may disagree once you dive in. I do still recommend it, if only for the few mentioned in What I Love.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher/author. I was in no way required to leave a review, and the above review is my honest opinion.
Is a wonderful collection written by nine talented authors! Interwoven within these pages you will find faith, hope, reconciliation, love and a circle that connects these stories is, family.
First Things First by Susanne Dietze Georgie and Ward grew up together, she thought their futures would be forever. But Ward left. He returns five years later. This story is full of twists and turns. There are a lot of lessons included. Susie writes Texas style. A great story with a big heart!
A Most Reluctant Bride by Cynthia Hickey Maggie is a determined and spit-fired young lady. She stands firm on what her mama plans. But Zach returns. Zach and Maggie marry.... its business only. One thing leads to another, by the end things there maybe...
Weeping Willow by Marcia Gruver This story begins when they are all children. Over a span of years, they grow and mature. The biggest part of this story set backdropped in the Civil War.
His Anchor by Carrie Fancett Pagels This story of Robert and Sadie was beautiful! But Sadie had to go through hurdles to finally see that Robert loves only her. I loved the sweet ending, a true princess and her prince moment. It was great to catch up on the Christy's and Ben and Maude, including Mrs. Fox. One thing I truly appreciated was the dance Laura and her wheelchair bound husband did. Carrie, this is a story I would love to read about!!
After the Ball by Martha Rogers Chase and Susanna reunite each summer for two months. This time is different. As the summer heats up so do their feelings. With all the goings on of a ranch, a ball is in order. It is a Cinderella ending!
Lighter Than Air by Lorna Seilstad After six years of not seeing Zach, he crashes in the school's backyard. Ellie and Zach have some hurdles to jump in order to get their relationship soaring again.
In Due Season by Connie Stevens Leah has been called many things when her fiancé ditches her at the altar. After 15 years Garth comes back to town. Can Leah trust her heart to him again?
Heartfelt Echoes by Jennifer Uhlarik Travis is urgently called to Victoria and Millie's home. Victoria has one wish for Travis...to take care of her daughter. As the story unfolds, there is deception and action. Travis and Millie endure some hoops to get to the altar.
Prescription fur Love by Erica Vestch Natalie chose Panama over marriage. She is forced to go back to the states because of yellow fever. Since she is recovering she isn’t allowed to return. Nate spent five years as a doctor in New Orleans. Nate and Natalie have an epidemic on their hands. As they work together, those feelings from years ago start springing up like daisies.

Once again, a couple of favorite authors bring lovely stories to life with engaging plots, fleshed out characters, and vivid scenery. Dietze and Pagels routinely contribute to these collections and I was pleased with the charm and charisma of their novellas. All of the stories in this collection have a solid faith theme and are enjoyable. I think fans of historical fiction will be happy to while away a few hours immersed in First Love Forever Romance Collection. I was provided an electronic copy of the book by the publisher through Netgalley with no expectation of a positive review. No compensation has been received.
While I am not a huge fan of novellas, there were a few in here that I loved! First Things First was a good way to get thins going, A Most Reluctant Bride had some adventure and mystery, I wasn't a huge fan of Weeping Willow, I like His Anchor by Carrie Pagels, but I wasn't a huge fan of how much older he was (not totally sure how much older), After the Ball, I don't like it when parents are very critical about their children's choices of spouses and they don't have any negative qualities to base it off of other than it wasn't the person that they chose. Lighter Than Air did seem slightly rushed, and I am not a big fan of hot air balloons. In Due Season was good, but the older guy bothered me. The step-father from Heartfelt Echoes was so mean and how did the doctor not understand the cause of her mother's sickness sooner? Prescription for Love was great, but I did not like how she turned away her love because of her father's insinuations.
Overall I give this entire collection four stars.
I did receive a copy of this book from Carrie Fancett Pagels (thank you!) but my opinion was my own.
I normally am not a huge fan of these types of stories (where the couple was together and then comes back after many years), but the ones I've read so far in this collection have been great. I especially loved the first story. Coming from a past of having an abusive alcoholic dad and being judged from that, I could really relate to the hero of this story. I loved seeing this romance come together.

Nine stories of never falling out of love with your first love and that if its meant to be God with show you the way back to each other. These couples learn that you can't fight what is meant to be and no matter the situation love and understanding with solve all. These stories were emotional and uplifting and show that a first love can change your life. I was entertained and moved with emotion by each story.
First Love Forever Romance Collection is a delightful mix of nine stories set from 1858-1905. They are all unique and totally wonderful. They are united by themes of second chances, restoration, trust and the love of a Father whose timing is always perfect. A really charming collection. I could not pick a favourite as they were all delightful. First Things First by Susanne Dietz is delightful. It is about second chances, the love of a family, trust and having correct priorities. "Choose to trust God rather than fight Him." We need to surrender our lives to God and trust Him with our loved ones. "And you can handle it better than God can?" Do not pick up burdens you were never meant to carry. God needs to be first in our lives, everything will then slot into place. The story also shows we are not destined to repeat the sins of our parents and cannot be held responsible for them. A sweet and wise read. A Most Reluctant Bride by Cynthia Hickey is a delightful tale about dreams, hard work, trust and God. The heroine is very modern and feisty. She knows what she wants and pursues it. There is a beautiful bond between her and her horse. This story is amusing at times and warms the reader's heart. Weeping Willow by Marcia Gruver is a wonderful story about love, loss, loyalty and hope. Set during the American Civil War it has its focus on the cruelty of slavery that divided the north and south. The forward thinking, big hearted heroine realises that slavery is wrong. "One day they would all share heaven." We are all equal. Her love for her childhood servants is huge. She realises that the old order of things is wrong. "Just because things have always been this way doesn't make it right." She lives with love and hope in her heart. My favourite quote was "She up and ran off with Jesus." A heart warming tale. His Anchor by Carrie Fancett Pagels is a most delightful romance, very reminiscent of a Cinderella rags to riches story. There is a wonderful, warm family atmosphere. Being a big fan of all Carrie Fancett Pagels novels, it was wonderful to have familiar faces pop up from other books. The story is about love and caring for family. The reader is reminded of the command to take care of the widows and orphans. A mysterious benefactor brings a smile to the reader's face. Positively wonderful. After The Ball by Martha Rogers is a wonderful light romance about knowing and following your heart and being true to yourself. It warns against the dangers of malicious gossip. The novel is about treasures. We need to decide where our heart and our treasure lie. Do we put our trust, hopes and dreams into money? Or people? A positively delightful read. Lighter Than Air by Lorna Seilstad is a real heart warming story. Set in 1900 the world is changing as new discoveries are being made. Teaching is important. "What we teach... could change the world." Science opens up minds and new possibilities. It is an age to be brave. We need to surrender to God's plans. "Safe doesn't make you lean on God. It makes you lean on yourself." God has far more planned for us than we could ever dream or imagine. There is a time for playing safe and a time for taking a risk for God. Such a wonderful read. In Due Season by Connie Stevens is a story about loss, regret, second chances and forgiveness. The story shows how no one is ever out of reach of God's love. There is the free gift of grace for all who wish to receive Him. Life is too short for regrets. We need to keep the past in the past and live in the present. Family is important, so is building bridges. God's timing in all things is perfect. A sweet read. Heartfelt Echoes by Jennifer Uhlarik is a great story about second chances, New creations, love and sacrifice. We all have scars. Some are visible, others not. Our scars do not define us. It is who we are in Jesus that matters. The story surrounds two characters who are deaf but that does not hold them back. This is a story of suspense that will have you on the edge of your seat. A wonderful and entertaining read. Prescription For Love by Erica Vestch is a delightful story exploring dreams, callings and missions. We all have dreams but we must not put pressure on others to fulfil our dreams. That is a burden they were not meant to carry. Our mission field may be overseas or it may be our own neighbourhoods. Wherever we are is our mission field. Modern medicine and new methods were used to fight old diseases. Hospitals were springing up but poor immigrants viewed them with suspicion. The story surrounds an outbreak of yellow fever in New Orleans. It shows how education, kindness and working together were needed to beat the illness. "Sometimes you have to trust others to do what you can't." It is also a story of restoration. A delightful read. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
I received a copy of the First Love Forever Romance Collection from one of the authors, Carrie Fancett Pagels courtesy of Just Read Tours Blind Read tour. It was requested that I read and review her novella, His Anchor in particular as well as any or all of the other titles. Each of the novellas feature a couple who were in love at one time (or at least one of them was) and have received a second chance at renewing that love. Due to a family health crisis, time restraints have prevented me from reading all the included stories other than His Anchor at this time. I hope to find more time later to read the others.
His Anchor is set in the late 1800s on Mackinac Island in Michigan. Sadie has always loved Robert Swaine, the young uncle of one of her best friends. When he returns to Mackinac Island, Robert learns of the dire circumstances Sadie and her sisters have found themselves in after the death of their mother and the disappearance of their father. Always a caring and generous man, Robert endeavors to do everything he can to make life easier for Sadie and her family. Of course in a story of this type readers know to expect a sweet romance to develop.
Both Sadie and Robert were strong and likeable characters who deserved a chance at happiness. The setting was vividly described and the plot contained just enough action to keep things interesting. My only complaint would be that the short length necessary for a novella left me wanting to know more about the characters than time allowed. I hope that reading the companion novel will satisfy that desire. If the other novellas included in this collection as as good, it will definitely be a satisfying read.

Another very nice collection from Barbour Puplishing. This one featuring first loves, the guy or gal that they first fell in love with. Sometimes it was the one who got away or a childhood crush, but were worth the wait. My favorite stories were Lighter Than Air by Lorna Seilstad about a hot air balloonist and a school principal and Heartfelt Echoes by Jennifer Uhlarik about a deaf couple which had the added bonus of being a follow up story to one of my favorite stories from a previous collection The Courageous Bride Collection. Nice stories and an interesting spin, ranging a wide variety of time spans and places. Only draw back for me was with so much separation, the reason for couples that really loved each other to be apart for as long as 15 years, was too often a dumb misunderstanding. Some were things like war, and that is realistic but just assumptions and letting someone you deeply love go because you won't for example talk to them was frustrating. I am also finding that the stories are cut a little short even for short stories in that as soon as you find out the couple is going to end up together the story ends... but often that when the romance just started and conflict ended. I know they are going to end up together but I want to read about their romance! Still great short stories with endearing characters. Prescription for Love in New Orleans during a Yellow Fever outbreak was a particularly interesting one too that deserves favorible mention.
Novellas are some of my favorite books for when I don't have a lot of time, but still want to decompress from the day. A story of a second chance for a first love is another one of my favorites! The last two stories in this collection were the ones I liked best.
Nine lovely stories about first love. South Texas 1877. Georgie is fighting God, her mother and those around her for control of her life. Can she possibly learn to trust Ward again, after all those accusations or will she have to marry who her mother wants her to?
Arkansas 1880. Maggie would rather be in the barn, breaking horses and whatever else as long as she doesn't have to stay in the house. Will all be lost now that daddy has died or can she once again find love with Zach and bring the the ranch back to its former glory?
Virginia 1858. Willow has grown up on a plantation with slaves meeting her every need or want. Enter the idea that these people might have feelings just like she does, and the doubt begins. Julian and his family don't believe in slavery, and yet he is willing to fight against the north beside his neighbors. When he goes missing in action, will Willow be obligated to marry for second best?
Mackinac Island 1894. Sadie feels like she has loved Robert forever. How can someone who is well known and respected, knowing many important people ever consider her anything other than a friend? After all, she is nobody!
Dallas, Texas. Chase wants to be a rancher, with all the hard work, the glorious sunrises and sunsets and the fresh air. Is he destined to work with his father in oil production or will he be able to follow his dream and marry his first love, Susannah?
Missouri 1900. Ella is the headmistress of an exclusive girls boarding school, a position she trained for and works very hard at. Love didn't fit in before and certainly won't now, even if her first love literally drops out of the sky onto the school grounds.
Kansas 1901. As the town spinster, Leah is not interested in hearing anything about love and certainly not about Gareth, the man who left her at the altar 15 years earlier. Will pharmacy school be in her future?
Nevada 1875. ASL or American Sign Language was something new and not familiar to most people. Reading lips was certainly the best way to understand what people were saying to you, something Travis had perfected over the years. Millie, on the other hand, had never learned this skill and as a result had a hard time communicating with others. Could they possibly discover why Millie's mother was dying and once again find the love they used to share?
Louisiana 1905. Natalie was told from childhood that she was to follow her father's dream and become a missionary to Panama. Thinking mission work was something she could only do in Panama she left her first love behind, only to return home with yellow fever five years later. Was God about to change her understanding of mission work and give her love as well?
I received this collection from NetGalley with no expectation of a positive review.
This book has such sweet stories in it! For anyone who likes historicals and short stories you will definitely not be disappointed. They are sweet and touching. Each other tries to write a complete story in short format which is not an easy task.
His Anchor by Carrie Fancett Pagels is especially compelling. It’s wonderful characters, touching storyline, and an incredibly done novella. I was hooked to the last page...and was so disappointed when it ended. The one sad thing about a story. It has a terrific happily ever after.
If you are looking for some historical romance stories don’t pass up this collection. It’s incredibly written and the cover is gorgeous, too.
I received this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
9 beautifully written second chance love stories. Each one touched my heart. Each novella features a couple that were first loves. Time and circumstance separated them, sometimes for many years. It was nice to see how they were reunited and how they dealt with their shared past. One man literally falls out of the sky, right on to the school property where his first love is principal. There is a lot of drama and suspense in a few of these stories as well. I think this collection will appeal to anyone who loves clean, historical, love stories. I highly recommend this book!
HIS ANCHOR Thank you Carrie for taking me back to my beloved Mackinac Island. I immediately felt at home with all of my old friends. Even though some are gone, some have moved on and some are still there. I'm so glad that you've brought Robert back!! He still to me is the same person deep down always looking out for others. Sadie still pines for him. I think I felt a deep kinship with her on that motive but I've learned to move on. I had a first love and I have never forgot him. I guess God had other plans for me like He did for my friends in the story. Might I say that God is our anchor to hold onto? He is our refuge and strength in times of trouble. All we need to do is ask Him. I love knowing that I can do that. My first love I thought hung the 🌙. I miss him and sometimes wonder what has become of him. I seen him when I first got married to the man I have now but oh how hard it was!! We've made peace with one another but I still miss him at times. I often wonder what it would have been like for him to be my husband. Sadie girl, you have a 2nd chance go for it! It's not often that we get those. Stop being so stubborn and digging in your heels!! I love ya girl. Especially since you're living in my favorite place!! I loved this story and didn't want it to end!! Carrie your writing style and storytelling are just fantabulous!! Thanks for taking me home!! I hope that you will write many more stories about our favorite place! I went ahead and read the other stories that went along with this one. I just couldn't help myself since they were just begging to be read too!! There's something in here for everyone. I used to not like reading stories like this until I realized that this is a good way to meet new to me authors and read some new stories!! My thanks goes to #Justreadstours#CarrieFancettPagels. NO compensations were received and all opinions are my own.
I have only read one of these novellas and this is my review of said novella.
My Review of His Anchor by Carrie Fancett Pagels: This was a sweet novella that followed a young lady that had lost her parents (one having passed away, and the other having left) and her best friend's younger uncle, as they and her siblings weather rumors, whispered words that wound, and mistaken assumptions of love. Ending all too soon His Anchor is a perfect hour read that ends with surprises for the heroine.
Rating: 4 and 1/2 stars.
Recommendation: 16 up for inappropriate suggestions from a suitor.
Disclaimer: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Great collection of historical novellas about being reunited with first loves. Some favorite authors in this set made it a pleasure to read. The stories were entertaining and sweet, some with a touch of mystery. and all set in the late 19th to early 20th centuries which lends that old fashioned air. The stories incorporate a great deal of faith and the characters lean on God even when they fear the future or can’t see their way. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, and was under no obligation to leave a review.
Reading the nine romance novellas certainly makes this reader anticipate more from these authors! An enjoyable pursuit. First things First: Prescription for perfect love in this quote from the book: " You're my best friend, my first love, and my last love." A most reluctant bride: An impulsive proposal that solves Maggie's families money woes. For this reader - the most romantic story in the collection. Weeping Willow: Story set amidst the US civil war - the heroine slowly grasps the truth that all people whether slave or not being equally valuable in God's eyes and sets out to make things right going forward. His Anchor: While I enjoyed the love story, it was difficult to make sense of who the different characters were and their connections to each other. After the Ball: A delightful story with southern overtones of Mama knowing best but true love overrules. Lighter than Air: Years ago, two intellectuals and their academic pursuits parted a young couple in love. Touching with hints of humor. In Due Season: A theme of forgiveness. Spinsterhood and the treatment of Tuberculosis feature in the story. Heartfelt echoes: Deaf characters and their battle to communicate as they wish to and not how their family dictates added considerable interest to this love story. Prescription for Love: First loves kept apart through the heroine's belief that "God's will" must keep them separated.

MY REVIEW
I know I've said it before, but I love the collections books. Each story is a quick read and there are always some of my favorite authors, I then get introduced to some new authors as well. I enjoyed all of the stories, of course some some more than others but once I got into the stories that I wasn't enjoying at first, I found they were enjoyable reads also. Grab a copy and see if you enjoy it too!
Filled with prayers, piety and passions most pure, this lengthy anthology offers up a mixed bag of variously placed romances throughout American history. Best of the nine novellas included here – this collection is certainly value for money – is the Civil War-set "Weeping Willow" by Marcia Gruver, which shows us a Southern belle confronting her own self-delusions about slavery, and the man who opens her eyes, and it’s hard not to fall for Millie and Travis in Jennifer Uhlarik’s "Heartfelt Echoes," a deaf couple in 1875 who eventually find their way back to each other after many a misunderstanding. Also of note is "In Due Season" by Connie Stevens, which is among the more frustrating, infuriating tales of betrayal and undeserved mercy this reviewer has ever read. Forgiveness may be divine, but "In Due Season" takes it way, way too far. -- Rachel Hyland

First Love Forever Romance Collection Is 9 Novella's and boy are they fantastic. They are about re connection of love, marriage of convenience, slavery and the Civil War and the separation from that, hesitation in love, dual love( but of what you asked? That you have to find out) , love crashing in, forgiveness and learning to trust again, saving someone you love from something bad( What you asked? Again that is something you have to find out - it is heartbreaking ), A serious disease and love that comes from trying to heal. All of these are incredible and emotional the most of all full of Faith in CHRIST. I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all of the opinions expressed in this review are all my own.

The First Love Forever Romance Collection is a lovely collection of stories about couples getting a second chance with their first loves. I have come to appreciate that writing short stories is a skill and thoroughly enjoy the ones where the characters are relatable and well developed. This collection features all time favourite authors, as well as newly discovered favourites with a wide array of characters, I particularly enjoyed the story with the deaf characters as you don’t often come across such characters in stories. Each story also has an inspirational message that can encourage the reader.
Thanks to Netgalley and Barbour Publishers for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Barbour Publishing does it again! These nine love stories about first loves lost and found are all rather compelling for very different reasons. From hot air ballooning to slavery to Mackinac Island to yellow fever in New Orleans, each author had me thoroughly hooked. (A fun bonus is that a few authors here revisited characters about which they had previously written - it was nice to catch up).
I received an ARC copy from Barbour Publishing through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Really enjoyed all 9 of these novella's. I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite. All stories tell of a first love that was never really gotten over, and chance meetings at some point in the future. They move along at a good pace and have a plot points wrapped up by the end of the story.
