Wardogs Inc. #1: Battlesuit Bastards

Rate this book
All war is murder for profit.

Some people are just more open about it.

WARDOGS INCORPORATED is one of the largest and most professional mercenary corporations operating in the Kantillon subsector. If you need a bodyguard, an assassination team, or an armored cavalry regiment complete with air support, Wardogs Inc. can provide it for you... for a very steep price.

Tommy Falkland is proud to be a Wardog. And he's delighted when WDI's executives sign a massive contract to arrange for a little regime change on a no-account low-tech planet that looks like a highly profitable cakewalk. But when the transportation company unexpectedly fails to deliver their armor and artillery dirtside, Tommy and his fellow Wardogs find themselves caught in the middle of the killing zone.

And there they learn that bullets will kill a man dead just as quickly as a plasma bolt.

BATTLESUIT BASTARDS is the first in the WARDOGS INC. series of military science fiction novels.

Mil-SF Action Adventure

I found it hard to root for the protagonists. There you are, running your business, shipping legit freight to another planet and some corporate weasel in cahoots with a corrupt government, hires Wardogs, Inc. Next thing you know, every last one of you, even the poor schmuck cowering in the ship's head, is shot down and thrown out the airlock.

Even when the inter-stellar version of Iran vs. Iraq pulls the team into the middle of their corrupt little war, it's hard not to root for the local guys when some of them are lightly armed farmboys, sent up against the mercs.

But you do get a good feel for the Black Band whose loyalty to each other is absolute, and their lack of concern for any soldier not of their tribe. And you get hints of the notion that even if the job is exciting, and the payout (If you survive!) is high, the death and destruction of non-combatants makes these guys uneasey. And of course, it's a page-turning, exciting war story.

So I'm going to check out the next one: If the moral climate doesn't improve, and there's no character development, I'll give the rest of it a pass. If the author pays out those hints of unease though, I'll be hooked.

Fast paced action from start to finish

These wardog novels continue to be fast, exciting reads from beginning to end. This one even had some romantic elements to it. The characters are fun, the plotting is tight, and the setting is interesting. I note and appreciate that this author doesn't take a break in the action for long winded world building and exposition... rather he picks his moments intelligently, and doesn't take forever to get to the point. Highly recommend to military s/f fans.

Sometimes you need books like this

Just a good nitty gritty dime store novel. A totally enjoyable time waster!! In a world where everyone is trying to write the next epic saga, finding this was a huge treat.

I really enjoyed the book....the way the guys rip on each other all the time is entertaining and reminds me of the old days with my tank crew. That being said, I would like to see better proofreading...lots of errors
