It'll take more than true love's kiss to break this curse.
After years of trying to find a cure, Princess Elena feels like she's made her peace with the century-long nap in her future. But when the curse threatens to come early and a rogue prince wants to hurry it along even faster, circumstances force her to reunite with a frustrating figure from her childhood who has some secrets of his own. Can the two overcome their differences and work together to defeat the curse, stop the prince, and find their own happily-ever-after?

4 I do enjoy my fairy tale re-tellings and Sleeping Beauty is a rare one to come across. Especially considering that the original stories have pretty gross undertones.
In this one, there's no hundred-year-old sleep, it is all happening in the months before the curse is supposed to hit. Both Princess Elena and the Queen are accomplished and fairly powerful sorceresses but no effort so far has had any effect on the curse. It was originally created by Elena's aunt who was angry at her sister for falling in love and marrying the King (instead of assassinating him, which is apparently how they met in the first place).
Elena has always known she has no future to speak of so tries to to establish too many emotional ties with people who would be hurt by her essential demise as the curse inevitably will hit. She has close bonds only with couple of people, among them her mother and her long-time bodyguard Alan. The latter suffers an injury and summons his son Cam to take care of the princess while he is incapacitated.
Cam and Elena never got along as children and young teens and have some squabbles still when they meet anew but they soon start to understand each other better. From there, they steadily move to liking and appreciating each other. This was well done in the book, the more mature and insightful way of viewing and interpreting the behavior and actions of a person you heartily disliked in past.
Meanwhile, the curse has started behaving weirdly, causing Elena to have blackouts that last from half a minute to a couple of hours. This should not be happening so everybody sets out to investigate what is going on.
The character set is fun - Cam has a lovely and well drawn family, Elena and her mother have a great affection for each other but heartbreakingly try to distance the other from any current or future pain caused by the curse. There is a mirror spirit who has a powerful magic and works as a therapist. There is a wraith who used to be an evil sorcerer, has been dead for some hundreds of years and is now living in the castle, great friend of the Queen and Elena and still a powerful sorcerer.
The novel has a young adult flavour. Enjoyable read, witty and written well.
Jenniffer Wardell builds her characters so well they are hilariously heart breaking. I first read this story chapter by chapter on TAPAS and the second I found it on Amazon I snapped it up. I can’t get enough.
