This ended REALLY REALLY WELL. I thought it was going to be a trilogy, but it's duology (I think a BI-ology would be a more fun name...)
Quincy was still a bit annoying, but less so than in the previous book, and there was no draggy middle section. I loved that it was broken into three distinct parts.
Again, really good breadcrumbs throughout the book that tied up nicely at the end - and somewhat unexpectedly. Where I thought some things were going to be whiny, teenager character traits, they were actually lead to really nicely from back at the beginning.
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT!!!!
SPOILERS, I SAID.
Didn't love the Colosseum section, and I wasn't even sure where it happened, because I had buried my copy of Oasis, and didn't have the energy or inclination to unbury it and re-read it. This is a common occurrence with books that I read as they are published though. I would love if there was a recap section at the beginning. You wouldn't have to read it if you were reading the books altogether, but if you'd forgotten, it would be really helpful. Anyway, that's not specific to this book.
Sophi/Sophia is not someone I cared about, and I was pleased that Clarke busted in and told Quincy to cop on and let Sophi/Sophia live her own life.
I really hadn't remembered a lot about Clarke, except that in my own review I had liked her. It seems like a lot of readers liked her, and she had more of a feature in this book THAT HAD A VERY DRAMATIC CONCLUSION.......
I have also since watched "The 100" and now I can hardly see her as anything but the Clarke from that show. Except not annoying.
PART TWO
Part 2 kind of flew by, but I was glad Quincy didn't fall into liking Genesis. They seemed so shady from the get go. I was picturing all the dodgy/bad guys from Agents of Shield in this section.
I had forgotten who Mark and Walter were, so that was anti-climactic for me. I still don't remember.
PART THREE
One thing that I didn't get for ages was why Quincy was so worried about being recognised inside the Celian City. She was disguised as an officer. Just pull down your hat, girl! And then it occurred to me that maybe she didn't have a hat at all. I had some notion that they got them with their uniforms, but I think I made it up, and it distracted me more that I like to admit. :S
REALLY GOOD ENDING, in case I wasn't clear. For the last several chapters, I was still convinced there would have to be a third book. Things happened so fast and changed so frequently. Loved that people actually got killed in the riots (not that I love death! Just, it was realistic and didn't shy away from the horrors). And because they were in the middle of it, nobody was agonising over it for pages and pages. It's a damn war, people die, and you wouldn't have made it this far or this high-up if you weren't involved in deaths. Some books really PMO with characters stressing about randomers dying.
I really liked Kole in this book, and apparently I didn't in the last one, so that was a bonus for him! I didn't understand why he was where he was, but this was one of the threads that was connected from the start and that suddenly became clear at the end. WELL DONE. I am really glad he got the ending that he did.
Lots of sadness and despair and destruction, not shied away from or hidden. And yet moments of happiness and peace. I really liked this book.
