Magical Cures Mystery #11

A Charming Corpse

Rate this book
Bubble... Bubble...

The quaint and magical shops in the cozy but unusual little town of Whispering Falls, Kentucky have been booming with business, with the exception of A Charming Cure. A mortal is selling homemade oils and making unfounded promises, undercutting June's prices.

Cures and trouble...

When the mortal is found, and spiritualist Leah LeRoy is Sheriff Oscar Park's number one suspect, Leah begs June to break the number one by-law: No spiritualist is able to read one another. Hesitant and not wanting to go against her Oscar, June does use her gift and uncovers that no matter what the evidence says, Leah didn't kill the mortal.

Magic stirs...

What's a witch to do?
June can't ignore her friend's plea to help her. June digs deeper into Leah's life and discovers more reasons why Leah had motive to kill the mortal than not.

And troubles double...

As if June didn't have enough on her plate, her Great Aunt Helena has a job proposition. Hidden Hall~A Spiritualist University has a teaching position in their Intuition School and June is the perfect candidate. The job has June's cauldron bubbling. The only catch is that she'll have to leave Whispering Falls for the semester.

Will June be able to meet the deadline of a killer before they strike again and the deadline of making a decision about the teaching job before she becomes the next victim?

There is one thing this series truly is, and it's stated in the name, it's Charming. In this new book of the series business has not been doing so well for June's shop A Charming Cure. You see a mortal charlatan has been hocking his own cures for a much cheaper price that what June does and the shop can't keep up. When the mortal is found dead and friend Leah becomes suspect number one June knows she must dig out the truth. Follow along while June tries to help her friend out, juggle a new teaching position, and keep herself out of trouble. With so many obstacles in her way will she be able to find a concrete conclusion to the murder? Kappes truly knows how to bring magic not only into her words but also into her wonderful characters. If you need a touch of magic and a dash of brightness in your day this is a series for you!

A Charming Corpse by Tonya Kappes is the eleventh book in A Magical Cures Mystery series. June Heal lives in Whispering Falls, Kentucky where she owns The Charming Cure. Business has been off lately, and June discovers why courtesy of a flyer. A mortal, Gabby Summerfield, is selling Life Choice Homeopathic products out of Leah LeRoy’s Crazy Craft Chicks. June decides to check out her competitor and discovers that the “cures” smell nice, but they are not going to have the effect of June’s magical potions. The next morning, Gabby is found dead outside Crazy Craft Chicks. When Leah is arrested for Gabby’s murder, she needs June’s help in clearing her name. Someone is setting up Leah for the crime, and June needs to work quickly before the Order of Elders descend on the town. While June is busy deciphering the clues to uncover the evildoer, she must also think about a job that has come to her attention. June’s Great Aunt Helena, who teaches at A Spiritualist University, told June about an opening at the university to teach potions, potion building and intuition. It is a perfect fit for June, but it would mean being away from her husband and shop (I think she should commute via the nearby portal). What choice will June make? Can June find Gabby’s killer? Come back to Whispering Falls for another magical adventure in A Charming Corpse.

A Charming Corpse is an enchanting tale. I like Tonya Kappes writing style (friendly is the best word to describe it) because it makes for an easy to read story. Her writing has an ease to it. The book has a steady pace and entertaining characters. One sweetie is Mr. Prince Charming, June’s fairy-god cat, who is one smart feline and protective of his charge. Madame Torres who dishes out premonitions from June’s crystal ball is unique. I thought the characters were well established and quirky which suits this series. The author provides great descriptions of the characters, shops, and town that allow the reader to visualize them. I especially love the descriptions of June’s potion bottles and the ornamental gates for each shop (the gate for Crazy Craft Chicks is gorgeous). It is interesting how each witch has a unique gift. I can tell that Ms. Kappes has a wonderful imagination which puts to good use in writing this series. There are good clues to aid readers in solving the murder, and I appreciated that there was an active investigation. I felt that A Charming Corpse could be read alone. I have not read many books in the series (I am looking forward to reading them when I have an opportunity), and I did not have a problem. The author provides June’s background (how she came to the village, met her husband, her magical gifts) and details on the town. When you finish reading A Charming Corpse, you will have a smile on your face (I just love books like that).

In this latest book in the Magical Cures series, June's business is taking a hit due to a new arrival in town - a "mortal" selling homeopathic potions and lotions. June smells "phony" all over it - and she's not the only one with an issue with the new girl in town. When the woman is found dead, June sets out to investigate before one of her friends is sent to prison for life.

There are so many things that appeal to me about this series - it just plain puts a smile on my face. The cover art on this book is just so gorgeous - it totally invites you to open the book immediately and dive into the story! The author has such a great imagination...and you can see in the descriptive details in the book that she thought carefully about the many characteristics of the town and the characters themselves in order to enhance the reader's enjoyment of the story. A few of my favs: Prince Charming, June's fairy-god cat that provides her with protective bracelet charms that he chooses to assist her in each adventure she finds herself involved in (another example where the author thought carefully about matching the object with a matching meaning); the magical bottles in June's shop that pick the customer and what they need rather than what the customer thinks they need to buy; the magical ornamental shop entrances that match the stores and the singing and humming flowers! The series is totally whimsical, mystical and magical with a wonderful sense of belonging and community. I can't recommend the series highly enough and I always anxiously await the next release!

Note: I did receive an ARC of this book, but my review is voluntary and is my pleasure to share with other readers because I don't want them to miss something special!

In A CHARMING CORPSE, homeopathic cures shop owner June Heal finds her business in a slump because of a “human”. Gabby Summerfield is selling her own homeopathic essential oil “cures” out of Leah LeRoy’s shop, Crazy Crafty Chick. When Gabby is found murdered outside Leah’s shop, Leah becomes the prime suspect and seeks June out to clear her name. In addition to investigating, June is also considering a job proposition that could cause problems between June and her husband Oscar.

A CHARMING CORPSE is a light, quick read full of charm. It is the perfect escape – find a comfortable spot with a nice beverage and lose yourself in the world of Whispering Falls, Kentucky. Author Tonya Kappes’ easy, friendly writing style draws the reader in and makes them feel at home in this paranormal world she has created. Her imagination is vast, and it is obvious that she relishes her craft. There is just enough reality to ground this magical village, making it believable. Kappes’ attention to detail is great with vivid descriptions and well developed characters.

This is the first book in the Magical Cures Mystery series that I have read, but I had no problem getting to know the characters and understanding everyone’s dynamic. June is likeable and a level headed sleuth. I also particularly like Mr. Prince Charming, June’s fairy god-cat. The mystery itself is complex enough to keep my attention and its pace steady. I did not know who the guilty party was until the very last moment.

I enjoyed A CHARMING CORPSE and recommend it to fans of paranormal cozy mysteries.

I received an ARC of this title from the author and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.

Another great addition to the Magical Cures Mystery Series! I love how Ms. Kappes describes the small town feeling for her books. June’s involved in another mystery in her little village of Whispering Falls and Ms. Kappes’ style of writing gets you immediately immersed in that small town feeling and it’s hard to set the book down before the ending. You can’t wait to see where June’s involvement leads. Great storyline, great setting and great characters make for another wonderful installment in June Heal’s magical life. This book was gifted to me by the author for purposes of an unbiased review.

What happens when another homeopathic "store" opens up in town? Murder! But this time June Heal is not the one in trouble, but her friend Leah is!
Lies, betrayal and sadness abound in this mystery, but the storyline will keep you coming back for more. Everything is not as it seems in Whispering Cove-or this murder.
A wonderful next story in the this series featuring June Heal and her beautiful shop. This story will truly leave you wanting to know and read more about June and to visit Whispering Cove, KY.

Best read as the 11th book in the series and not as a standalone to get a real feel for the village and its members.

AMUSING!

Another amusing book by author Tonya Kappes! A Charming Corpse (Magical Cures Mystery Series Book 11) is best read in order in the series and not as a stand-alone. The setting is the mystical village of Whispering Falls, KY where all manner of spiritualists live. A few mortals wander through from time to time without causing problems but there always has to be a troublemaker! This troublemaker wants to introduce a new product to the village but it’s one that could compete with items already being sold in one of the established stores. If you like Cozy paranormals, with fun, quirky characters, a village of close friends that are like family and a little murder and mayhem tossed in then you’ll enjoy this book and the whole series! I was provided an ARC of this book by the author. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.

Charms and cures and murder, oh my!! The 11th book in A Magical Cures Mystery Series by Tonya Kappes sends you on another magical romp through Whispering Falls! June's friends and neighbors (and even a very special cat) will leave you wanting to move to their cozy town! Just don't tell the mortals their secrets!
It is apparent from the beginning that who the corpse will end up being but the twists and turns will leave you guessing as to who the culprit might be until the very end. A fun paranormal cozy that is definitely different and unique, the author has creatively spun another tale that grabs you from the beginning if you've read only one or all of the books in this series.
I enjoyed this mystery and hope to read more by this author in the future.

June Heal feels the darkness descending on Whispering Falls. With Madame Torres, her crystal ball, and Mr. Prince Charming, her fairy-god cat, she's using all her magical skills to find out who murdered Gabby. When Leah, the owner of Crazy Crafty Chick, becomes a suspect, June promises to help. Will she be successful? June is a great character. She cares for her town and her spiritualist neighbors. Her new husband, Oscar, is the Sheriff. He loves June and wants to keep her safe. I love their relationship. It's sweet and touching. However, June has made a promise that she has to keep. I enjoyed this paranormal cozy mystery. The characters are endearing and setting is charming. The mystery is well written and filled with surprises. I can't wait for June and Oscar to take the next step in their lives. I wonder what Tonya Kappes has in store for them and Whispering Pines.

This was the last book in this series that I needed to read. Of course it was another good mystery in the series. In this one June is convinced that Leah is not the actual killer. She then spends the book trying to prove that someone else did it. Of course everything is solved and everyone is happy.

This is a charming story and the first I have read in this series. I now have to go back and read the previous stories in the series. Everyone in town seemed to know about the party the mortal woman was having that sells lotions and oils. Since this is the business that June is in, she decides she needs to go to the party and see what the woman is selling. They are inferior to her lotions, but they are cheaper. When the woman turns up dead the next day and June's friend is accused of murder, June decides she needs to help find the real murderer. Can she find that person before someone else ends up dead?

June Heal and the delightful village of Whispering Falls are back in another mystical mystery. A Charming Corpse (Magical Cures Mystery Series).
A mortal is selling homeopathic potions and lotions, and June knows the word phoney is written all over it.
When the mortal is found dead, Leah becomes the prime suspect.
Quirky characters, spiritualists, betrayal and lies will keep you turning the pages of this wonderful book.

A Charming Corpse by Tonya Kappes has June and Oscar going through some issues with communication while trying to solve a mystery.
Can June and Oscar make it through this story?
June and Oscar
June Heal and Oscar Park go through the wringer in this mystery. They must figure out why anyone would kill the victim and why they did it in their village. Not only that, but they also have to work on their communication skills to be married. June Heal Park is a great character. I honestly love being able to read in her world. The world of Magical Cures Mystery is a perfect blend of normal life mixed in with the supernatural because of what June and the rest of the inhabitants of Whispering Falls are. June and Oscar have been through so much that I hope this simple case of "oh, I forgot to mention this honey" won't break them.

June and Oscar are still so cute together. Yes, they are still their separate selves in how they carry out their own lives when they aren't together. Oscar is still the same guy who is a cop in both towns because he loves to help people out and solve crimes. June is still her curious self about figuring out why someone would do this thing to either implement her or her friends into a crime. I love these two a lot, and I adore seeing them grow into the characters they are today.
A Charming Corpse CRThe Mystery
Oscar and Colton must figure out who would kill the mortal within their town limits and why they would do it. Is the killer one of them, or did they upset another mortal? Well, Oscar also has June helping out as well since sometimes people talk to her better than anyone else. That and her gift is helpful with weeding through the suspects. They have their work cut out for them as they enter the mortal's life to see what is going on. I didn't get who the killer was or why until the reveal. I admit it I fell for a red herring....again. It happens when they seem like the most likely person to commit the crime.
Five Stars
A Charming Corpse by Tonya Kappes is another well-crafted mystery. Many moving parts were happening that made it hard for the Parks to communicate with each other, but it all worked out in the end like any good thing. June and Oscar will make a cute family one day when they finally have a baby together. My dogs aren't a great help with sniffing out the killers. Oh well, maybe next time they can be helpful. I am off to the next book of this series which happens to be my last one.

I am giving A Charming Corpse by Tonya Kappes five stars and a massive recommendation for this series. If you haven't picked it up yet, you should. It's a great one that keeps me laughing and thoroughly entertained with trying to figure out who could have done it!

In the picturesque village of Whispering Falls, June Heal, a resident spiritualist who owns A Charming Cure shop which sells lotions/potions and cures for whatever ailments you have, finds herself with a little competition. Gabby, a mere mortal is in town trying to sell some similar products for half the cost. Of course you get what you pay for and these new products don't have the magic that June's does, so she's not too worried, but the other spiritualists still feel the need to console her. Leah, a new resident to the village finds herself in a sticky situation when Gabby forces her to open her business to the woman to sell those new products, despite Leah's protests. Things only go downhill from there, when the mortal is found dead the next day. Leah asks June to help prove her innocence.

Tonya has a wonder imagination when she is describing Whispering Falls and all that it holds. (Describing even the smallest of details of the gates to the shops, for example.) She really gives you that visual. In addition to the visual she sets up for us, she doesn't leave us hanging with the magic and the mystery. The mystery itself, while simple in the end, has us winding here and there as we weave through the suspects and motives. Of course June uses her magic and the help of a few other spiritualist's gifts as well to get to the grand reveal, which is actually a surprise to her and us.

This book can be read as a stand alone without much issue, (the mystery is open and closed within this book,) but the characters themselves all grow and evolve together through the series. This is a clean book and safe for younger readers. It reads smoothly and the story moves quickly.

*I volunteered to review an ARC of this book.

I have never read a Tonya Kappes book that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed! Her books are so much fun, regardless of the series, and this book/series is no exception! You will never find a spoiler in my review, but let me start out by telling you, although you probably should read the books before it in the series, you won't be lost if you pick up here, but you will certainly want to go back and read the rest and then some! Set in Whispering Falls, Kentucky (all of the books are set in a town in Kentucky), June (the main character) finds some competition afoot! Then of course, there is the death to investigate and the suspects to clear. As in all the books, this story whisks you off and sets you down right in the midst of the story and the characters, and Tonya does a great job making you feel like you are there. The descriptions are vivid and complete, the characters are so well developed you feel as if they are friends, and there are always the ones that you love to love and love to hate! These books, this one too, is a feel good read that keeps you up reading past your bedtime till you get to the end. Smart, charming, well written with the twists and turns that keep you guessing, and when you think you know who the killer is, you are taken in yet another direction to a surprise but sensible ending! What are you waiting for, get this now!

The setting of the town is in Whispering Falls, Kentucky, where spiritualists, with unique gifts own shops.

June Heal is the owner of A Charming Cure, where she uses her gift to provide a healing remedy sold as a lotion for those that need it, but it's the bottle and magic that pick the customer. June is a spiritualist, although mortals would refer to her as a witch. Lately, her homeopathic cures haven't been selling and business has been down. After seeing a flyer about a mortal party, June decides to check it out the competition where she meets Gabby Summerfield, the mortal representative for Lifestyle. Gabby is selling homeopathic oils, but fake versions.

When Gabby turns up dead, and a spiritualist is the prime suspect. June breaks a bylaw of reading this spiritualist without permission. June's intuition tells her that her friend is innocent. June with her fairy-god cat, Mr. Prince Charming, and clues from her crystal ball, Madame Torres; sets out to do some sleuthing to save her friend.

This was a fun, enjoyable read! I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is the 11th installment of the Magical Cures Mystery Series and it is a great one. I have read most of this series and I love all the continuity and backstory however they also work as great stand alone books too.
June Heal is such a strong female lead (one of the reasons that I adore cozy mysteries) with Oscar Park as the encouraging and supportive husband. June, with help from her cat, Mr Prince Charming, and her magical crystal ball, Madame Torres, is trying to figure out who killed Gabby, the mortal selling fake homeopathic oils and remedies. Will June figure out what's going on and save a friend who has been wrongly accused? I got completely caught up with the story and characters that I could hardly put the book down. It keeps you guessing until the end and was an enjoyable escape from reality.
If you like paranormal books or mysteries you will love this book. I would definitely recommend all of the books in this series.
I received this book in hopes I would give an honest review. The opinions stated in this review are my own and have in no way been influenced by anyone.

I was so happy to see June and Whispering Falls. This is one of my favorite witch series. I can't believe how much June has grown over this past year. She seems to have embraced the magical world splendidly. The town has grown also and now we are seeing a bit of the outside world coming into are beloved town.

June has noticed that sales are off and she finds out why. There is a mortal selling homeopathic "cures" like June. This mortal has stirred up a lot of different things in both the magic world and her mortal town. She seems to have a unhappy life.

We kind of know who is going to die. But how and why end up being a question we end up taking a journey to find. While all of this is going on we also see hints of how the next book is going to go. June has some major decisions she is going to have to make.

This book was a very happy bonus to the series. After so many you still don't get tired of reading June's story. The ending did not not turn out the way I had figured. The twist and turns lead me down a different path all together. If you are thinking of starting this series you should it is a delightful story you don't want to miss out on.

June Heal’s store A Charming Cure is in a little business slump due to the homemade oils that are being sold by a mortal in and around the village. When another spiritualist is suspected as the killer, June breaks the village law of reading another spiritualist. Having read Leah, June does not believe that Leah is actually the killer. In addition to the murder, June has been offered a job teaching potion making at the University. Can June solve the murder and make her decision about the job proposal before her husband and the Sherrif- Oscar finds out?

I have just recently read the first book in this series. I am glad I read the first book before reading this book for June’s background of how she came to Whispering Falls. Although it is nice to know June’s background this book can definitely be enjoyed as a stand-alone mystery. I really enjoyed how the characters have evolved from the first book, they are fun, quirky, and entertaining. I love the small town setting of the series, you feel like you are reading about old friends no matter how many books in the series you’ve read. The mystery is full of twists and turns to keep you guessing.

A very entertaining book I recommend to mystery and paranormal lovers; I will definitely read more books in this series. I received this book in hopes I would give a review. These are my opinions and have in no way been influenced by anyone.

Tonya Kappes once again invites us along on a magical adventure that keeps you intriqued and feeling right at home with June Heal and all of Whispering Falls.

June Heal is feeling a little off but then who wouldn't when business is down because of the new business in Whispering Falls.
When her competiton is found dead and a friend is the suspect June has to help, even if she has to bend the rules a bit.
This book is one you just can't put down and you find yourself getting caught up in the characters, plot and the town of Whispering Falls. It has just the right mixture of mystery, emotion, loyalty, friendship, thrown together with an unique setting, quirky characters and a touch of magic, what could be better? If the mystery wasn't enough throw in changes and an oppurtunity that requires June to make tough choices which adds just the right touch. This was a wonderful addition to the series and I can not wait to read the next adventure of June Heal.

This is a great book; this is the eleventh book in the Magical Cures Mystery series and is written by Tonya Kappes. This is one of my favorite series, the books just keep getting better and better. June Heal lives in Whispering Falls, Kentucky where she owns The Charming Cure. Business has been bad lately for June because there is a mortal named Gabby selling the same type of products at a cheaper price. When Gabby is found murdered June is determined to find out who the real killer is since her friend Leah is the number one suspect. Let me say first, I love Kappes' Charming mysteries. June Heal is a likable protagonist and the residents of Whispering Falls are an interesting group. This latest addition is a bit disappointing. The bones of the tale are pretty solid; a witch has been caught doing magic and is being blackmailed over it. When the blackmailer turns up dead, Leah, the witch in question, is naturally suspected. Ever curious, June steps in to help. The execution is not up to Kappes usual level. The book feels rushed, both in the telling and in the writing. There are several grammatical errors that interrupt the flow of the story. I had to stop and edit as I went along. Not horrible but annoying. I would rather wait an extra couple of months for a polished book than feel obligated to edit what I'm reading. I sincerely hope the next time we venture into Whispering Falls the book is back up to Kappes usual standard.

A Charming Corpse

June Heal lives in Whispering Falls with her husband, Oscar, and her fairy god cat, Prince Charming. She creates potions specific to what ails her clients. As the story opens, she is pondering the recent fall off in her business. Then she finds that one of the shop owners is hosting a potion party and that the potions are fake. The next morning, Gabby, the purveyor of the knock off potions, is found dead in the street.

Leah, the shop owner who hosted the party, comes to see June to tell her that she was blackmailed into giving the party. Unfortunately, this makes Leah the prime suspect. Leah asks June for help and June agrees.

This book is part of a series, however, I thought that it worked well as a stand alone. I enjoyed the storyline and the characters but not the errors due to poor proofreading. I would have given this book four stars if not for the large number of errors that spoiled the reading experience.

Gabby Summerfield, a mortal, has come to Whispering Falls to sell her “healing oils” at a spiritual store, the next morning she is found murdered. June is helping Oscar figure out who the real murderer is and trying to keep her friend and a fellow spiritualist from being arrested for the crime.

I absolutely love this series!! Whispering Falls is the perfect place for a short vacation from reality. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, Ms. Kappes describes the town and townspeople so well that you can close your eyes and picture it perfectly. If your looking for a great paranormal cozy with a great mystery then this is the book for you. I’m excited to see what the future holds for June, Oscar and the entire gang in Whispering Falls, KY.

I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of this book in return for a honest review.

It is always a pleasure to return to Whispering Falls!

Initially, June Heal only senses a hint of spring in the air. Unfortunately, the smell of death proclaimed by the Karima sisters foreshadows the death of a mortal in their charming village. Leah, June's friend and fellow spiritualist, is the primary suspect. Is her death connected to the essential oils she was selling, to the detriment of June's business? Will June find the killer before the Marys appear to investigate? Will June take a temporary position at Hidden Hall, the Spiritualist University? You will have to read this 11th installment in the delightful Magical Cures series to find out what happens to June, Oscar, and - of course - Mr. Prince Charming, June's cantankerous fairy godcat.
