DIMILY #4

Just Don't Mention It

Rate this book

Tyler Bruce – hell raiser and bad boy – tells his story in his own words.

Alternating between past and present, Just Don’t Mention It is narrated from Tyler’s perspective. We see his life as a twelve-year-old boy suffering physical abuse at the hands of his dad. We see him as the daredevil seventeen-year-old we first met in Did I Mention I Love You?, the stepbrother who falls head over heels for Eden.

In these parallel timelines we finally understand the enigmatic Tyler’s complex story and his innermost thoughts – on his dad, his mom, on Tiffani and Eden – all the things Eden wasn’t witness to. And, crucially, the reader gains heartbreaking insight into why Tyler becomes the self-obsessed, angry and unhappy guy we encounter in DIMILY.

This utterly addictive rollercoaster of a novel gives voice to one of the most adored characters in Estelle Maskame’s extraordinary international bestseller, Did I Mention I Love You?

I was on the promotional blog tour for this book!

T/W- Domestic violence

I was very excited to receive this novel for review, the signed copy looks great next to my contemporary books on my YA shelf! I started reading the original trilogy on Wattpad many years ago and was delighted when it got published. Tyler’s story flips back to five years in his past and the present day and I got to know lots more about him. He starts relying on distractions and won’t open up to his stepsister Eden about his struggles and violent relationship with his Dad. Just Don’t Mention It is a hard-hitting read but also, one I found very thought-provoking. Seeing a male POV also appeals to me not just as a reader but a writer too. This POV was well-written and felt immediately hooked into learning more into Tyler and seeing the experiences he had with friends and family.

It is a long story, but the chapters were well laid out. The ending did feel a little rushed in places and one of the characters Tiffani throughout the novel did behave quite badly towards Tyler. I would recommend Just Don’t Mention It to any fans of the trilogy and those interested in reading from a teen boy’s perspective on everyday life.

I got sent this book in exchange for a honest review, all my opinions are my own and thank you so much to the publishers for sending me this book!

So if you have been friends with me for awhile, you know I love The DIMILY series, I think it's so fun and enjoyable. In this book, the story is much darker and a lot more serious.

If you don't know the original trilogy, we follow Eden as she spends the summer with her father and his new wife. Eden's new stepbrother Tyler is the guy your parents tell you to stay away from but it's all about them and their forbidden love. I would highly reccomend picking up the original trilogy before picking this up.

So as I was saying, following Eden in the other stories was much lighter and easier to engage with because she is very soft and innocent like she loves Disney movies so like she had a very light easy perspective.
In this book,we follow Tyler who is just so incredibly different to Eden. This Story is set in two different time periods, one was five years before meeting Eden which follows Tyler as he is abused every day by his father and then we get the flash forward to him meeting Eden.

So Tyler gets in trouble with the law a lot, he smokes and sells pot, drinks a lot and sleeps around and we see a lot more of that in this book but we definitely see a more vulnerable side to him.

It was also great seeing the romance between Eden and Tyler play out in Tyler's POV.

Overall I just really loved it!

JDMI was an absolute tear-jerker. Not only did it have character, but, it also had heart. The number of emotions I felt while reading this was uncanny. It's an interesting read and is the perfect book for a fan of DIMILY. Hearing Tyler tell his own story and how each chapter was split from past and present was a very unique move. I recommend this book to anyone who has read DIMILY. It's a great read!

I feel like crying right now. Tyler’s story was so heartbreaking😭
I think that Estelle Maskame did a great job at describing the pain and all the emotions that Tyler went through, and because of that I think that this is her best book so far.

So I just got this in the mail and I ended up staying up all night reading it. I couldn’t put it down. 5 stars definitely!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
So this book did something I didn’t think was possible. It made me fall in love with Tyler even more. Every chapter that had him as a kid just broke my heart so much and it had me screaming to every adult “How do you not know? Are you blind? He’s so obviously in pain." Not that I blame Ella or anything. It just hurt my heart. I loved seeing Eden from Tyler’s POV. I’m just in love with these books and I'm so happy she decided to write this book. This is one series I really wouldn’t mind going on and on. I would read every one. There is still so much that could be told. They’re still young. And their relationship is complicated. I just love Tyler and Eden together so much. I highly highly recommend the whole series.

English: Totally recommended. I really liked Tyler's point of view, and what he thinks about the first book in the series. In the first you fall in love with Eden and in this one with Tyler. I have to say that you come to understand why he acts like that. At first it was a bit heavy that the one chapter was of the present and one of the past (5 years before), but as you read you want to know more and more (breaking my heart more and more). Estelle writes very well, and although I have to admit that I dont remember very well the previous books because I read it for more than three years, I have fallen in love again like the first day. In fact I'm considering reading them again, since the second book (Need You) is one of my favorite. She has treated mental problems very well, and I have to say only a few authors do it well. In general, if you like this type of books I recommend you read in this order (Love you - Forever You - Need You - Miss You) because it will help you to understand the story better.

The DIMILY series holds a special place in my heart, mainly because Estelle started where I started. Two years after finishing the series, I was a bit fuzzy on the events that happened in the first book, but Estelle makes it easy for readers to navigate through the sequences of the book without getting confused.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is my first venture into Estelle's book series, and I'm so glad I finally got around to picking one of them up. I felt so many things over the course of this book, happiness, sadness, heartbreak and love. Despite Tyler's bad boy persona at the start of the book the more I found out about him the more I fell in love with him. Estelle has created such a deep, wonderful character, and I think this book must add so much onto the rest of the series. I loved Eden too, she's such a mystery in this book and it reflects so well how Tyler feels about her. You never really understand what's going through her head and it's as much a surprise for the reader as it is for Tyler when things start happening. It feels so real and at no point are you wondering why this is happening.

I've never been to California, but I feel like Estelle has captured the feel of it brilliantly, the lifestyle, the partying and the life of teenagers in the state feels so right. There's also no confusing American school jargon to get lost in (I never understand the difference in grades and sophomore etc), it is occasionally mentioned but when it does come up it's in a context that makes sense!

The book skips through an entire summer in just 500 pages, and yes I wish there were more, there's so many instances that I would have loved even more detail about (hence why I'm going to go and pick up DIMILY). I completely understand why people are excited to get their hands on this and trust me it's so worth it!

DNF. This is so bad. The writing is terrible and feels like an awkwardly-written first attempt by a 14-year-old, and I found several grammatical errors within the first few pages. I don't know how this is published and this does a disservice to writers who start on Wattpad.

This book tells the the story of DIMILY so well 😭 getting to know Tyler and being inside his head made everything make sense. The chapters of the past were so heartbrokenly raw that even my heart ached for him. Estelle wrote Tyler’s story beautifully and I couldn’t ask for more ❤️💔

Tyler Bruce – hell raiser and bad boy – tells his story in his own words.
Alternating between past 5 years ago (12) and present(17) suffering physical abuse at the hands of his dad, these were HEARTBREAKING SCENES!!!! Skipped gym because he was scared people would notice!!!! Got emotionally abused too and only ever him!!!! His father jused him as boxing ball when the pressure of work got to him, lsing employees in his company. He made him study endlessly, couldn't even play with his friend Dean!!!! While he was a good father to his brothers Jamie and Chase, he was Tyler's nightmare!!! Sometimes he had a good day, which makes it even worse!!!
'I’m crying. “I’m sorry.”
I’m sorry that I make him so mad. I’m sorry that I can never be good enough. I’m sorry that I can’t make him happy the way Mom does, the way Jamie does, the way Chase does. I’m sorry for letting him down'
yeah that scene wrecked me!!!
-his parents got Tyler when they were 16 so they gave up their lives to take care of him. He wants Tyler to study and become successful they way he couldn't be...
Tyler keeps it a secret from his family because he wants to protect them and doesn't want them to know he's hurting.... his mom Ella is a lawyer and never home...
'My brothers, Mom’s smile is wide and pure, full of love and pride. Dad is just like the man I used to adore, the same man I know he still is deep down. We’re all happy.
This is the family I’m trying so hard to protect."
-but suddenly his dad changed, he takes him to a football game, seems happier and doesn't hurt him anymore, tyler has hope and forgave him. But then he asks if he can olay football, he lost it again!!!! AGONISING!!! He believed it was over, that he was sorry!!!
-after a kid made an comment about his father, tyler completely lost it!!! Got into a fight AND SUSPENDED.!! his father almost DESTROYED HIM!!!
-he is hurting soo much, and he still doesn't tell anybody... even after all the bruises, broken bones, and blood!!!
-he comes to the point he doesn't care, he got blamed for the fight and he is broken!! He runs away!!!!
-officer Gonzalez finds him, he trusts him and takes tyler to the station. Elle is heartbroken that he ran away, but doesn't tell peter (tells him he was at Dean's)
-his dad is losing his employees and tyler just can't handle the abuse anymore-STOP!” I scream. With everything in me, I slam my hands into Dad’s chest, shoving him away. I’m not letting him do this. I don’t deserve it. I’m just a kid. I’m good. It’s not my fault. None of this is my fault.'
-it gets worse than ever- It’s never been this bad. I can feel his rage in his touch. I can sense the lack of control.
I think Dad might just kill me.'
MY HEART BROKE!!!!
-Jamie found them after 4 years of hell and called the cops!!! WRECKING SCENE WITH ELLE IN THE HOSPITAL!!! I CRIED SO MUCH!!!!

17: drunk, party, drugs, dealing, toxic relationship with Tif, but despite all this Tyler still CARES SOOO MUCH!!! HIS EMOTIONS!! HIS ANGER. HIS GUILT!!! He is just a broken kid who wants someone to notice him!!!!
-heartbreaking scene with his mother, they talk about him getting therapy, but he's not ready yet- I wish she didn’t blame herself. She thinks she’s a bad mom for not noticing the abuse I was suffering for years, but I fought hard back then to make sure she didn’t suspect anything.'

We see him as the daredevil seventeen-year-old we first met in Did I Mention I Love You?, going to party's, doing drugs, not giving a f*, Tiffani and him using each other, for distraction and status, drifting appart from his friends and.family. he made a persona for himself so they will leave him alone
'Eden who doesn’t back down, the Eden who challenges me, the Eden who isn’t afraid to tell me the truth.'
-the stepbrother who falls head over heels for Eden. I love him even more!!!! He cares sooo deeply for her and everyone!!!! The fireworks, the romantic scenes like the Pier were they first kiss!!! The emotional scenes where they open up to one other!!!! She told him about the divorce, she got tried to fill the void with food, so she's incredibly insecure... she breaks through his walls and he tells her everything (after he got angry and she locked them both up in his bathroom!!) He told her about the abuse and the 'distractions' :'I have just let her into the darkest parts of my soul, and she is still here with me. She has seen me at my weakest and my most vulnerable. She has seen me. And she’s still here. She’s in front of me, she’s kissing me, she’s holding me, and I am completely in love with her.'
– all the things Eden wasn’t witness to. Like with Tiffani blackmailing him (she was bullied and uses Tyler to secure her status) and the dealing drugs!! Getting drunk and going to parties to keep the 'tyler bruce' image. The photos of him and his father he burned and scens with Dean his friend!!!
-after she got drunk, he took care of her and brought her to TJ's appartement; I wish she knew I was here, that I haven’t left. I will sit here and watch her for hours if I need to, just to make sure she is safe. I think that’s the moment I realize I’m in love with her.'
-Also the emotional relationship with his mother Ella!!!
The hell he went through, the pain, the anger, the self-destruction but also the loving, caring and protecting side of the real Tyler: Someone who cares about me as much as I care about her. Someone who I can open up to, someone I trust. Someone I want to be better for. I am in love with her.
Lastly tif yells baout the drugs and ealing and he's kicked out of the house!! Tif was lying she's pregnant!!! He wants them to put everything behind then and take care of the child!!!! Luckily Eden found out she lied, so he finally breaks up with her and if free!!!
Eden breaks his heart by saying they can't be together, he goes to his mom because she's the only one why can make feel okay: 'I make a single promise to myself. To my friends. To my brothers. To Mom. To Eden.
I promise I am going to do better.'
This utterly addictive rollercoaster of a novel gives voice to one of the most adored characters in Estelle Maskame’s extraordinary international bestseller, Did I Mention I Love You? IT MADE ME FALL IN LOVE ALL OVER AGAIN!!!
I will love and cherish this story for ever

I’m not going to lie this book took me a little while to finish, yeah I was busy but the book also carried such a heavy topic, and the flashback scene were so hard to read, but I loved this book so much because it really makes me understand Tyler, I loved his character from the beginning but this book sheds a new light on him and I love it. I’m sad that this series is over because I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend.
