Connor MacLeod, ex-Major in the British army who transported himself to a different dimension, and who, after 20 years using his abilities to carve out an empire, is given the option to leave that dimension by the Gyden because it is determined that he has inadvertently turned out to have an immortal body! The alternative to leaving is to become one of them - a Gyden - which stands in total opposition to everything Conn has fought for.
With only the one real choice on offer and only a moment to choose, Conn decides to return. He also takes Halla with him because her life is irrevocably bound to his. They soon discover that what was an impossible decision quickly becomes really complicated when Asherah suddenly appears on earth and discloses that his presence there could fundamentally damage the delicate balance of that dimension, and now wants him to leave, again. Assuring him that his immortality is no longer an issue, she offers to send them "home". They agree, but soon find that "home" is not where Asherah, mother and most powerful of all the Gyden, actually sends them, and the purpose of her actions, if there are any, are not easy to uncover. She is also, surprisingly, not around to ask.
Michael O'Neill is a high school teacher from Queensland, Australia, who has had a life long fascination with the world of Science Fantasy -- starting from his introduction to the genre by J.R.R. Tolkien and CS Lewis. His favorite books remain the Belgariad series written by David Eddings. Deciding to take up the mantle himself, he started writing his own book - one volume that has turned into an epic journey of four books. The "Casere" series is now complete and available on Amazon; 600,000 words completed in less than three years! His other interest include horse racing and genealogy.
I have read this entire series and find this book to be the most confusing of all. Well written and enjoyable but confusing. You might call this military science fiction fantasy. I also dislike a chopped off ending.
