After uncovering a plot set in motion by an intergalactic terrorist organization, humanity races to discover the motivation behind their hunt for advanced technology. They deploy the spaceship Gnosis to investigate. Why are these criminals attempting to unite the most powerful technology in the universe? What is it they fear is going to happen? These questions and more lead the spaceship Gnosis on a hunt for answers. With their ally in tow, they visit a neutral space station to find a scientist who may be able to assist their investigation. Little do they know this man is pursued by a ruthless corporation bent on salvaging technology which can be turned into weapons. Pitted against this new foe, the Gnosis finds itself against flesh eating mutants, wild weather patterns and advanced warships, all poised to take them down. Every step they draw closer to the answers they seek, the stakes rise along with the dangers, until the prospects of returning home alive seem like a fleeting hope.

I’ll start out by saying that the typography problem I found in book 1 has been fixed. This book reads much, much better. But, and I’m not complaining, it is a short book. While there is a lot of action, it seems to go by pretty quickly.
After returning to Earth with a second Orb and a Pahxin scientist, Doctor Thayne Randala, they now know their enemy is a rebellious group of Pahxin who are out to collect all the Orbs and other ancient technological artifacts. Doctor Randala believes that his people, the Pahxin, would be more than agreeable to an alliance with Earth if they were given something to help with defeating this splinter group the Tol’An. He informs Captain Bradford, commander of the Gnosis, that another scientist of his race might have more answer as to the origins of the Orbs. He also tells them that his scientist friend is currently located in self-exile on a neutral space station called the Rilla. Doctor Gil Vaedra is an expert in stellar archaeology.
So, after a brief rest for the crew and some very necessary repairs to the Gnosis, the ship prepares to head for Rilla station. This should be a relatively benign mission since the space station is a gathering places for various people seeking fun and entertainment. Little does the crew of the Gnosis realize that there is also very little in the way of law enforcement on the space station.
Once they find Doctor Gil Vaedra, they are immediately confronted with the situation were the good doctor owes a lot of money to the Kalrawv. This was a large corporate entity know through out space for it’s less than gentle methods of treating people that owed it money. When Thayne identified his friend, Gil, he was getting beat up by a bunch of Kalrawv thugs. Agent Cassie Alexander had two Gnosis Marines with her so they had no problem separating Gil from his unfortunate situation. That did lead to a running battle all the way back to the docked Gnosis. As there was no law enforcement on space station Rilla, every and anyone seemed to be taking shots at Cassie and her party, but mostly it was the large group of Kalrawy chasing them that she had to worry about.
Safely aboard the Gnosis, Dr. Vaedra, does share his knowledge of the Orbs and other ancient technology. He has retrieved some information from a slightly hostile planet while working for the Kalrawv, but he had to escape their control since they would have killed him when he was no longer useful. He provides information as to where a data source is located, but the planet is not an easy one to visit, but that’s how it goes for the crew of the Gnosis. They are now off on several short exploration trips attempting to access data libraries that could help in explaining how to fully utilize the Orbs they now have in their possession. The fighting gets pretty fierce for both the ship and it’s Marines.
This is a pretty exciting book and much more enjoyable with the typography corrected. It seems like I just sped through this book in short order, but that could be due to all the excitement. There appears to be some kind of romantic under-story developing between the second-in-command, Commander Bowman and Agent Cassie Alexander. Yet, they’ve been so busy fighting off bad guys that it’s very difficult to find the time for any kind of romance. Still, if you like that in your books, maybe it will develop in the next one.
Book 3, “Alliance”, is out and I already have my copy. I think I’ll read something else for a while and then get back to this story.
I read the first book in this series. I was in the process of writing a muted scathing review ( if there is such a thing) and got interrupted. When I went back to finish it I saw that they had taken my 3 star review and run. I gave this book 4 stars cuz I guess I’m getting use to Walker’s strange writing style. I never read of so many people humming and smirking as in these 2 books. The author seems to have only a vague sense of military discipline or professionalism..No idea of coms discipline either. Maybe he should have read some Jay Allan or Anthony James first. Example, the Science Officer was Lt. Salina Gold and the captain would call her Lt. Salina. You wouldn’t catch Captain Tyler Barron doing that. It’s not too awful of a story line, but it needs a little more professional writing skills. Sorry, John. Just my opinion, and you know what they say about those.
This book, just like its predecessor asks the reader to believe in the highly improbable. These adventurers from earth step out in the wider galaxy for the first time and are somehow more adept at using technology that other races of peoples, that according to the author has had the benefit of the same technology for much longer periods of time. They also invade a world of sentient beings, label them as monsters and proceed to kill large numbers of the same with impunity as the beings try to defend their home. This series fails to pique my interest as it appears an all to familiar narrative. The author has found a rather bland and unimaginative recipe for churning out books that in my opinion fails miserably to inspire this reader and I shall commit his name to memory so that should I encounter any of his work in the future I would not proceed to waste my time on his myopic writings.
I was willing to accept the deficiencies of book 1 and continue into book 2 with some reservations. I should have quit at book 1. The protracted battle on the space station was without merit. The rate at which the fight escalated going from physical altercation to gunfight was unbelievable as was the choice of weapons and random slaughter of bystanders.
When the next “plot device” was announced as “flesh-eating monsters” on a barely livable planet I realized this series had gone from tolerable to unacceptable. I recommend leaving the rest of this series on the shelf.
A little better on tempo and action, the characters are not maturing as I saw in the World Walker series. Though with this series there is more of a spread of books, so I expect the characters to really ramp up. I am really looking for a small team which gels and sets the pace for others to get motivated off of. Looking forward to the search in the next book. Thanks.
Excellent second book in this new series I enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed the second book of the series. It was very fast-paced, full of action, and intrigue. Anybody who likes space battles, robots, lasers, and fast-paced action will enjoy this book. It is just as good as the rise of mankind series which I suggest people also read. Waiting for the next book.
Lots of room for more drama to come but this is full as it can get. Gracious it was tense and full of surprise. Plus a maybe growing love plot?! Just great and I'm wanting more ASAP!
Another book in the continuing saga of Earth's fledgling steps towards space exploration. A s expected from this author there is plenty of action and it had a clear storyline. Having the epilogue clears up the story and a insight of what the next book will offer.
Was entertaining but you don't continually win battles when you are technology inferior. Ship would have to be updated with all the New things they are finding.
The author has come up with a good story line on why Earth currently has one ship doing lots of heroics. It’s nice there are upgrades to the ships technology. Good, fun read.
Well it looks like the Gnosis has done it again. Commander Bradford and his team once again survive innumerable odds against unknown alien forces which are bent on spreading evil and destruction.
A good read. A lot of action and characters that have reasonable actions although some seemed a bit contrived. I didn't think is was quite as good as book 1 but it was still interesting and well written.
