Each millennium brings a new Neteru, a vampire huntress whose mission is to vanquish evil from the world. This millennium's savior has come in the form of Damali Richards, a hip-hop diva with the heart of a warrior and an attitude to match. But a war in Hell has cost Damali both her powers and her past love, Carlos Rivera. Still, Damali can't let her grief stand in her way. Several gruesome deaths, starting with an American research team, have come to Damali's attention in Brazil. The nature of the deaths leads Damali to believe that the killer is anything but human...
Unknown to Damali, the life of Master Vampire Carlos Rivera was saved by a most unlikely group: a band of monks also dedicated to fighting the Dark Realm. In exchange, they want Carlos to help stop the inhuman murders plaguing Brazil-and they will use Damali as bait if they have to. Reunited, Damali and Carlos give in to the erotic passion they have fought for so long. Together, they are a powerful force. But Damali has made a terrifying enemy who won't rest until the beautiful Neteru is dead...
L.A. Banks, a native Philadelphian, was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Wharton undergraduate program. With many awards to her credit, Banks also held a masters of fine arts degree in film and media arts from Temple University. She lived in Philadelphia with her family until she passed away on the morning of August 2, 2011.
This series is very good. While it doesn't get the love that Sookie Stackhouse, Lestat, Anita Blake, Buffy and countless others get, it is just as good or better. These books would make a beautiful movie or series AND have the most DIVERSE cast that the world has ever seen!!! If hope Ms. Banks brings these stories to Hollywood (or HBO or Showtime) and if she ever needs a script writer, just send it my way!!!
This was my favorite installment so far! So much happened to move the story along. I'm taking a short break from the series to get some other things read, but I'll hopefully come back to it later this year. For some reason I'm thinking these are perfect for fall/winter reading.
Up to this point I was liking the series. Now I LOVE it! The vampire huntress squad was magnified and you really got to see a dynamic that will leave you loving or hating them.
Vampire huntress Damali grows up and her lover Master Vampire Carlos gets a whiff of something. There is a lot to always bite off and chew slowly when reading L A Banks. This book blooms into a thorny rose that pricks you. It wants blood.
So we open up knowing that Damali & her gang are depressed. I'm not entirely sure why they're all depressed – they just kind of are. I think it's because they escaped from the tunnels of hell but Carlos – a vampire who none of them knew – didn't. This also really depresses Damali who expresses this by having a random vampire kill, just because and decides to have a reunion with an old friend, drink booze and spend some time reminiscing and being depressed
We know they're depressed because they spend an awwwfully long time telling us that they're depressed. No, really, this is like 15% of the book here, spent telling us how depressed they are. They might rename the “exposition room” to the “moping room.” I honestly didn't think I'd finish this book because that first 15% was almost impossible to read. Somehow, I managed. I wish I hadn't. This book makes me feel I have to go back and re-read Sunshine, our only DNF review because if I got through this I owe McKinley a second chance!
Anyway, Carlos, has survived! Yay, I guess? He is found by the surviving priesty-dudes and taken to a secret location to recover and be offered a deal – he fights the good fight for 7 years and his soul will be redeemed (because, y'know, nearly dying to save the Neteru and the world? Totes not enough). There then follows page after page of Carlos saying how horny the Neteru makes him and how there's some vampire women out there and they make him horny and zomg so horny and hungry and horny and – for gods' sake Carlos, go get some alone time with your right hand already.
I enjoy the world around Carlos, the vampire. The council, the intrigue, that sort of thing. I don't understand hardly any of it. This is the most confusing book series ever.
But - there's WAY too much angst here! I want more vampire hunting! More battles! Hold off on that drama, girl! It wears me out, it's stilly, it makes no sense. There are parts of this story that I like but parts that are so eye rolling.
It's also terribly confusing. I never understood a thing about the demons and the were-demons and the Neterus and the guardians and whatever else went on.
Vampires, Were-humans, Were-demons, the 7 levels of Hell, an ancient Amazon mother-seer who thinks she is the Neteru, the continuing war between light and dark, battles, bloodshed, death, sex, love, lessons and choices, this book has everything!
Carlos continues to burn both ends against the middle, hoping against hope that no one will catch him while he struggles to make his choice between light and dark. He was marked as dark well before he became a Master Vampire, but because he was already originally fated to be a guardian and Damali's life-mate, his soul has light, even if his choices in life tend to lean to the dark side. His soul is caught in Purgatory while both sides fight for and against him, allowing him time to choose because of the breach in supernatural law...but that window of time is closing at a rapid rate. Every visit he makes to subterranean levels of Hell brings him closer to the dark and further from the light. While part of Carlos belongs to Damali, it is still about choice and every decision he makes further determines what will happen to his soul. If only Carlos would open his mind fully to Damali and allow her in, have a long talk about what his options are if he chooses the light, can he truly commit to the light. His doubts and fears and limited imagination are taking him from her, but she can't help him more than he wants to be helped, and it hurts both of them.
Damali's team learns of a portal that wasn't fully closed when Nuit was destroyed, and that portal being open allows things of all types in AND out. Now they must travel to Brazil to face this evil head-on. The book of the Temt Chaas writes itself and burns into existence new pages, only revealing information when it knows you need to know. So one day the book reads something completely different than the next day. So it isn't until Damali and Marlene are physically in Brazil and can feel the pull of the dark side, that the book reveals a horrible history. An ancient Amazon warrior guardian with her heart set on revenge of the darkest kind, because of atrocities that occurred 500 years ago, has been trapped geographically by the were-realm for all of those years and she has had it...she wants out. So even though she has daylight capabilities, she can't leave Brazil. The portal being left partially open has allowed her out, and she is telepathically calling Carlos as hard as she can, like a siren, because power draws to power, and she can sense his immense power and wants to use it for her vengeance. She wants the vampires ability to go anywhere, no geographical restrictions, and that means seducing Carlos for a V-point and black blood exchange, neither of which is sanctioned by the Vampire Council. But what she doesn't know is that only one can come out on top of a V-point, and it would never be her. Foolish and dangerous.
Counselor Vlak has openly voiced his vehemence against Carlos, seems to think Carlos is protecting the light and Damali's interests, and isn't loyal to the dark side. Well, he's right, to a point. The sliver of light still left in him is pissing Vlak off, and it's about to explode. Strike a few deals in Hell, some double-crosses, bad choices, and before you know it, it blows up into something out of control, larger than almost neither side can control, unless they come together.
I can't wait to read book 4, because this story is getting so hot, I just have no idea what to expect next!

A lot happened in this book, and it took me a while to finish because I've been so busy. But I'll try to remember everything that happened... First, Damali and Carlos finally come together. I love that L.A. Banks took her sweet time to get her characters to that point. I would still qualify this book as romance, but it is definitely top tier romance. Banks is an amazing writer. Her books have a complex and continuous plot revolving around our two lovers. At one point in this book I wasn't sure if our lovers would make it, but the book ended well and I look forward to reading the next one! For those of you who may be thinking, "Oh this is just another vampire drama," No! No it is not. There are no sparkly vamps or oversized dogs here. Here there be monsters! Banks introduces were-beasts to her story in this book. I say were-beasts, because all of them were originally human and are now half demon animal. The antagonist here being a were-jaguar, which is definitely a twist. I've heard of werebears and werewolves but never anything else. Anyway, I still definitely recommend this series to any Vamp drama lovers out there! These books are awesome!!!
I have to say I definitely liked this better than the first two in this series. And after reading the teaser for The Bitten at the end, I'm anxiously looking forward to that one now too.
Granted like the first two, the writing style got to me at times. Were it not for the fact that the characters tend to say a lot of useless and unimportant stuff, I might've gotten lost in the dialogue sometimes, partially because of the dialect they use—is it called hip hop, black, or urban street language, I'm not sure—and also because Damali sometimes seems to go on and on in her head about nothing at all. Fortunately, any time this happened, it wasn't detrimental to understanding what was going on.
In this book, Carlos is able to fight his ever-strengthening vampire nature because of his love for Damali, and has become a valuable resource to the Guardian team. I'm glad to see his place is secured in future books.
APB Perspective Reviews : 3.5 stars . I love Carlos and Damali but there is so much dialogue I felt like I wanted to scream , just stop it !" But I'm interested is the series so I'm on to the next book because I want to see what happens next .
After the her vampire lover dies while saving her, Damali goes into a depression and becomes "blind" to her gifts as a vampire hunter. But Carlos isn't dead. Resurrected by the monks he is now a master vampire and takes over the territory of the vampire who tried to kill them.
Problems are brewing in Brazil, which is in Carlos' territory. It appears that another Neteru is around and something is killing people by tearing them apart. Marlene needs to call on one of her old lovers for help.
I really like this series. I find them light, easy reads and something I don't have to think too much about. In this book Carlos and Damali finally get together (which is something we have been waiting for in the last couple of books).

What a ride this is! I’m still in the beginning stages.
I started this series years ago and then life happened and I never finished it. I am sooo enjoying this second time around. Just when I think I’ve got the next chapter- heck, the next page figured out the phenomenal L.A. Banks flips the entire thing and it’s incredible!
The character list is long and varied, which I adore, but Damali and her crew are the main focus. The locales, the villains, the plot, the backstory she gives these people- insane! Marlene and Shabazz goodness! When I first started reading this series, I was closer to Damali’s age and now I’m closer to Marlene and Shabazz- wild! And I’m loving it!
Okay enough raving, I’m off to Book 4 “The Bitten”…
I love this series. Periodically I'm lead to revisit this series. No matter when I return I always get something new than I got from previous reads. This author lit a fire in me back on 2004 to get me on my path as a writer. That I will never forget.
It took me forever to read this book. And really, I don't know why I am still reading this series. The language is ridiculous. NOBODY TALKS LIKE THAT! Also, I end up getting do made at Damali and Carlos that it's not even funny. So, in this book, D and Carlos FINALLY get together and its super hot. Then, they have to go to Brazil to deal with this crazy thing that is eating humans. Carlos and D fight about it and she puts on a concert over there that is so hot it reaches the Vampire Council. There is this female that is calling for Carlos and he wants her bad because he thinks she's a vamp female that got ahold of Neteru scent, but really she is a fallen mother-seer who turned were-demon and is not crazy. D and Carlos fight and he wants to cheat on her, oh and one of the members of the vamp council knows that Carlos is playing both sides and tries to manipulate him to be with the were-demon. We meet a man from Marlene's past and he and Shabazz get all territorial about her. D and her team join up with Mar's ex and deal with the crazy were-demon former mother seer. They also kill the council member that is trying to manipulate Carlos, who then comes to save the day. I was super angry with how D and Carlos acted and that they can't just get over themselves and be together. We get it, Carlos was her destined soul mate but now he's not, but they love each other, always have and always will. Neither can stand the idea of the other with someone else, so get over it and learn how to deal with what you have. Oh, and did I mention that the language is ridiculous? Because it is. Also, the guy from Mar's past, he had an accent, but he did not always have his accent; it was very inconsistent, which was also irritating. However, I will read at least one more book. I do like D and Carlos and the team so I am not ready to give up on this series, but it's not guaranteed that I will finish the series.

You know what is neither sexy nor exciting? 560 pages of a girl and her boyfriend yelling at each other. The blatent sexism doesn't help either.
This book is largely plotless and really hard to follow because of it. There are a few shreds of plot spread out through the run very, very sparingly, and that makes it all the more confusing when what little plot there is actually happens.
This book is pretty evenly divided. The first 250 pages are the sex part. The plot that's been hinted at in baffling glimpses becomes a thing after that, with no more sex. But even still, the plot is extremely thin. Realistically, the story could fit into about 150 pages. Generously. If the point of the book is explore Damali and Carlos's relationship, that's fine, don't have another plot at all. Don't promise us something and then not deliver it. It was over pretty fast and conveniently when it happened.
And, the depth of this book that all the reviewers were talking about is completely lost on me. This book is a pretty basic, good always defeats evil, love conquers all schtick. And this is where the sexism takes a heavy toll. If sex has power, then why doesn't Damali struggle with it the way Carlos does? Carlos is a guy and he feeds into the notion that all guys are sex addicts who can't exercise will power, while the women are sacred and pine only for the love of their lives and give themselves to none other. Whether or not Carlos wins this battle doesn't matter, because it's kind of insulting that he has to fight it in the first place. And we won't even go into the concept of vampires being sex addicts (they're dead! How can dead things be obsessed with sex, aside from a severe mental condition?!)
There's is nothing to recommend this book at all, as far as I'm concerned.
The first 2/3 of this book are great but towards the end I completely lost interest due to the fact the last one hundered pages could have been cut down to twenty pages or less. Also, some supporting characters are flat and interchangable. Even the main characters, including the Vampire Huntress herself, seem flat.
There are, however, several likable aspects of this book. Banks has two love stories, a young woman love story and an older woman love story. It's nice to see that in a novel. Too often only younger characters are allowed to be in love. Banks also has the older woman, Marlene, be the focal point in a love triangle.
Banks has sex scences, but she also examines the ramifications of sex. You have a night passion instead of doing your duty, there is a price to be paid. Too often writers have characters engage in behavior or actions without any real effect. Think of how many times characters have unprotected sex without getting pregnant. Here there is great supernatural passion, but also a call back to reality.
Partly my bad, starting midway through a series, some are ok with that some are not. Honestly though, I doubt it would have been better if I had read the others because a significant portion of the first 80 pages was insipid recaps of all that had gone before and that is annoying if you have read it all in the first place.
The level of angst was high enough to drown in, for no apparent reason since they apparently spent the last book kicking Hell's arse in battle. The 'sistuhs and brothers' writing does its best to reinforce all the American stereotypes of black (or Latino, Jamaican whatever), though thankfully that seemed to drop of after a chapter or two.
And did none of the people who loved it find it the least bit disturbing that of all our main characters supernatural attributes, her womb, ovaries and breeding potential seem to be mentioned the most? After the phrase "...her innocent womb.." cropped up it was pretty close to all over for me.
This book is MUCH heavier and more complicated than the first two in the series. To be honest, it took me a while to get through it, because although there is just as much thrilling, scary action and steamy, star-crossed romance and the characters and mythology were just as compelling as the previous two installments, this book suffers from being too seriously aware of itself. The plot becomes more convoluted and over-complicated, feeling like it adds another layer that may or may not be necessary to the plot.
Still, I never felt an urge to put it down, and as a writer myself I understand how tough it is to get through that middle section where things sort of drag, and Ms. Banks certainly does a great job at keeping things compelling. I fell as though Damali and the Guardians are family, now, and I need to find out what happens next!
In the 3rd installment, The Hunted, we open up with Damali & her team being sad and depressed Because they escaped from the tunnels of hell but Carlos didn't. We get a little more action with the Guardian Team and Vampire huntress Damali. In this book our Huntress grows as a person & ups her skills as a vampire hunter .This book was better than the 1st two, not to say they where not good it is just you really get a better understanding of Carlos & Damali as well as how they love each other and are meant to be together no matter what. Now The huntress, Master Vampire Carlos, and the Guardian team go Brazil where the fight the Vampire council continues.
This is a very good story/concept.. I just wish that that the author would get out of her own way. Incredible attention to detail, talented wordsmith; however, the story gets hijacked by too much detail that the main story gets lost. The main characters are interesting and I want to see where the author is going with the story; however, there are too many times while reading that I am saying to myself " WTF" ...not enough hours in the day from that.
This book had some whirlwind adventures, action-packed kick-butt scenes towards the end, and the interesting creatures introduced in this book (were-demons, were-creatures, and were-humans). Some were bitten, instead of sending their souls to hell and become as were-demons, they were were-humans. I had to take my time on these passages to get a clearer understanding of the transitions and their majestic powers. I was most intrigue at the every end, last 100 pages or so.
They are good books but sometimes hard to follow. Damali is awesome and Carlos is one hot guy. Jut make sure you pay close attention to the books or else you will be lost.
