For decades humanity lived nearly unnoticed by the robotic Gods that battled for supremacy of Earth. Unfortunately for Jeff, Carlee, Stefani, and the other vagrants that is no longer the case. Following the events of Vagrants the status quo has been obliterated.
With the vagrants declaring war on the Apostles once again, Carlee and Stefani desperately need reinforcements as Jeff lies dormant in a medical chamber. Hunted at every turn and afraid to use their powers, of pulling objects from other dimensions into their own, the vagrants are worse off than ever before. Failure means extinction and victory is impossible.
Impetus, picks up right where Vagrants left off, and never slows down as the final human survivors face new challenges that make them wish they lived in another timeline.
"Impetus," the second in the Vagrants series by author Jake Lingwall, picks up soon after the first in the series, when one of the vagrants destroys the source of the robot lords' power. Background: a vagrant is a human who can drift between the infinite versions of the space-time continuum and retrieve, or "press," technology or whatever they want out of that alternative reality. This enables the vagrants the ability to bring firepower, technological enhancements and a means to fight the dozen or so self-aware robots that have taken over the planet and nearly wiped out mankind. But the vagrants, led by Carlee, Stephani and Jeff, are on the losing end. They just don't have the resources to try and save what's left of humans on the planet. And, anyway, nobody trusts vagrants. What they do is weird. Unnatural. People don't initially think they should trust a vagrant. But they have little choice. Lingwall gets a little bogged down in the middle of this book with fighting robots and his chief protagonist Carlee going back into other timelines to be with her dead husband. See, a vagrant can travel timelines, but the act of going back and forth messes with their minds. And Carlee pushes herself hard all the time. Another robot gets into the picture besides the one who has pledged to help them. This one has power beyond their abilities and he's getting stronger. But they must challenge him. Lingwall brings it all together for a serious climax, so the middle was worth the wait. But the series is just getting started.
