This series has become one of my favorites, especially in audiobook form. Mr. Javan Bonds has created a LOL funny group of characters that will keep you entertained from beginning to end.
Mo Collins, the main protagonist, is on his way to find a possible cure for the zombie invasion that has overrun the world. His motley crew aboard the replica pirate ship, the Viva Ancora, includes all of the main characters I have come to love. My favorite character, Smokes, doesn't figure into this book as much as in some of the previous ones, but his presence is still felt in a huge way.
On the way to find the cure, Mo and his crew have to stop at the numerous locks and dams along the rivers in order to navigate. Mo's new sister-in-law is the only person who can handle the technology and Mo seems to be destined to be one of her bodyguards at each lock. Of course, with Mo along, there are plenty of peevie encounters at each stop.
Mo's brother, Easy, insists that they make a detour to Tuscaloosa to pick up the Alabama football teams' National Championship trophy. We all know that this is super important in a world being overrun by blue infected people trying to eat everyone who isn't blue, right?
Mr. Bonds continues to throw in plenty of references to sci-fi, comic books, and other geeky things, which is one of the things that makes this series unique and enjoyable. He also describes each and every battle scene and individual death in a unique way and these scenes are never boring. You never know what gruesome detail you will hear next.
I have been waiting for the appearance of pirates in this series and this time around, I finally got my wish! The encounter between our beloved protagonists and a horde of pirates was a highlight of this book.
S.W. Salzman has become the voice of this series and even when I am reading a physical book set in this series, his voices for each of the characters is what I hear in my head. I can't imagine these books without his narration! It makes a great series even better, if that's possible!
If you are easily offended by gore, blood, brutal descriptions of body parts, political incorrectness or the f-bomb, don't read this series. But, if you are looking for something different in the growing zombie genre, give it a try. Just be prepared to be laughing or sometimes cringing throughout the book!
I was given the chance to listen to this book by the author and narrator and chose to review it.
