Derry Women #5.7

The Way To A Man's Heart Or Strange Things On Plates

Rate this book
PLEASE Although this novelette is part of the IRISH LOTTERY SERIES, it's a complete story, and can be enjoyed without having read the previous books.

Maybe they should've said grace beforehand...?

The extended Flood family are in for a surprise. Hardened matriarch Fionnuala Flood, tiring of the usual fish fingers and baked beans on toast, has decided to channel her inner Gordon Ramsey and serve them up a special treat from her grease-spattered kitchen. But a master chef she is not. As Paddy, Maureen, Dymphna, Siofra, Padraig and Seamus pull their chairs up to the dining table, Fionnuala proudly places covered platters before them. As the lids are lifted, will they tremble in anticipation...or fear?

Fionnuala Flood is at it again. She needs a lime to make a treat for hubby Paddy because she's still paying her penance for too many past wrongs. But you can bet your bottom dollar that where Fionnuala's concerned something's going to go catastrophically wrong and that some hilarious crossed wires will happen along the way. Meanwhile ditsy daughter Dymphna is also doing her bit shopping at the Top Yer Trolley with her brood for the rest of the exotic ingredients for Fionnuala's surprise. It's full of the usual hallmark comic genius. 'She'd wondered, because they were shells, if tacos were some sort of nut...were they like a main part of the meal or a side dish?' I laughed out loud so many times. The improvised ingredients are thrown together in true Fionnuala style as she tries to introduce Paddy and her extended family to Mexican cuisine. Every sentence and phrase is a feast to the senses which is more than can be said for Fionnuala's zany concoctions. But will this be enough to win her family over and redeem herself? Will she finally be allowed to take off her fake mask and go back to being her old self? You'll just have to read it and see!

The only reason this rated 4-stars is that I am really not keen on novellas. If it had been a novel, it would have got 5-stars.
It's a continuation of The Irish Lottery Series which I have enjoyed so much, and involves attempts by Fionnuala to extricate herself from the psychological prison she has been placed in and regain her throne as the matriarch of the Flood family. How better than a feast. An exotic one that involves ingredients that Fionnuala knows nothing about. By the end, she believes she has, so I can't wait to find out what the result on the family that is bound to happen. Do the Flood's accept her attempt as an achievement?
It's a belly laugh and, in parts, should not be read while you have drink or food in your mouth.
Highly recommended.

Nice Interlude

Hansen delivers again! Short but sweet. All being quiet in the Flood house was bound to be temporary— thank God?

Fionnuala is still trying to keep up her pretence at being a good wife and mother. According to her self-imposed penance since being allowed back in the family home, she only has one more task to complete before she can bury Fake Fionnuala and be herself again...

This book reveals the nasty side of a greedy Irish matriarch and her very stupid family. I never want to read another book in this series as long as I live.
