Let me admit my bias right at the outset. During WWII when we lived with my grandmother in Coupar Angus, Scotland, we had a Polish Army unit based in the village and three Polish Army officers billeted in our house. Their behaviour was impeccable. Daily, I heard almost as much Polish as English and developed a great respect and affection for them. Later, from 1967 to 1974, I worked for long periods throughout Central and Eastern Europe and developed a great respect for the people and their culture while deploring the atrocities perpetrated by those pursuing the political ideology inspired by Marx and Engels.

In a touchingly sympathetic way, Monika Wiśniewska’s book illustrates the understandable ingenuousness of a Polish girl, a university graduate who migrates to Britain after the revolutions of the late ’80s and after access to Western Europe was made possible by EU membership in 2004.
Perhaps because of the favourable economic advancement of the West following WWII, the general population of Central and Eastern Europe were, at that time, under the illusion that the average citizen in the West – in the UK for the purposes of Wiśniewska’s book – was not only better off materially but was also their moral, philosophical, educational and cultural superior.

Unfortunately, such was not the case. With reference only to the university sector which I knew well from ’67-’74, the average Polish undergraduate approached her studies with greater diligence, was more serious in her attitude, and better informed about her own culture and history than the average western student of the same age.

It’s not surprising, therefore, that Monika Wiśniewska arrives in the UK expecting to find peers among her room-mates and work companions. Instead, despite her best efforts, she finds inferiors, though there are notable excpetions. She encounters exploitation and disappointment not only in the employment market but also within the personal relationships that she seeks to cultivate with the best of motives.

Her persistent self-discipline and industriousness however allows her to succeed at work, to advance, and carve out a successful career for herself. As is so often the case in life, especially in the life of a serious young woman after the apparent liberalisation of the ’90s and its aftermath, she contributes her all to one personal relationship after another in the belief that sincerity will beget sincerity. Instead, she encounters shallowness and duplicity. Often. Old fashioned virtues like disinterested kindness, striving after the learning, trustworthiness and courtship are on the wane.
Just as I was beginning to wonder if Monika would learn the lessons life had been teaching for almost a decade and a half, she switches into a higher gear in the final 25% of the book. The change in writing style reflects the changes within herself. She becomes more more discriminating, less credulous, more self-conscious, analytical and reflective.

Monika Wiśniewska left me on the final abrupt page, willing a new and more lasting happiness for her. She deserves it.

An absolute masterpiece on life and love!! I hope this book gets a lot of awards as it shows the many universal truths that will relate to everyone. I am so happy I read it. Every man should read it as it gave me a better understanding of a woman's mind. Sure the author is very unique and there are lots of different women out there but it was great to see how she may react to certain things. The author didn't have much luck with the men she met but I am not surprised to see her struggle in some relationships. In the end, I think this book is revolutionary because it teaches how to love yourself unconditionally without the need for another person, a rare thing we are taught as youngsters, always relying on fleeting romances and so-called loves that hardly ever last forever. I highly recommend this book seeing a deeper meaning in life. Als as a Polish Canadian I appreciated learning so much about different European countries she described. Thank you for sharing your story with the world. Read it!

“The Story of a Beautiful, Resilient Soul”

I recently purchased the book, “Polish Girl” by Monika Wisniewska. Diving head long into a rich memoir, I found myself transported not only to a lifestyle beyond my usual venue, but pleasantly into the story of a young woman searching not only for love but for her proper place in the world. After reading it, I stepped away and did some quiet reflection. Did I like this book? Honestly? No.

I ADORED IT.

It takes a great deal of courage to reveal the depths of your soul. Showing the world that yes, I have made choices and some of them have not placed me in a position that I would like, but I stand by them. That’s a tragically human thing to do. It’s also profoundly beautiful.

After the first chapter where we find our narrator/heroine, in the most precarious of emotional positions, we are taken back to discover how she came to this place. Monika’s optimistic, but realistic approach to finance, career & love make her a person worth rooting for. She fails (often) but still has the sense of survival/common sense to get back into the game without wallowing into self-pity and self-destructive behavior.

She believes in love and unfortunately some of the men she chooses to give her time and emotional attachment are soon proven unworthy of said attachment. It goes without saying that she deserves far better than some of the suitors that have pursed her in the tome, but this is where Monika Wisniewska shines as an author and as a person. She initially takes responsibility for her lack of success in the realtionships, even when it’s obvious that most of the blame could be realistically placed on those who haven’t fully invested their own emotions into that same relationship. Seriously? Who would treat a beautiful woman like an afterthought? Someone who (obviously) doesn’t deserve her.

Eventually, Monika becomes aware that the most basic and perhaps everlasting love begins with one’s self. She eventually is shown to have learned the appreciation of one’s own company and despite a slightly questionable and ambiguous ending, you can tell that Monika’s story of self-growth and intrinsic reflection have taken her beyond the need or desire to having any significant other by her side. This is truly inspirational if not revolutionary thinking.

Against the backdrop of the Brexit vote and it’s often overseen result of making immigrants questions whether to stay in a land where they are unwelcome guests, this novel also shines. Although, eventually Monika returns to her native and beautiful Poland (shout out to her loyal and loving Mother). It could be realistically argued that a great deal of Monika’s identity is formed and comparative to her homeland.

She eventually and always returns but also finds that her future love is not in her homeland of Poland, but in the lifestyle, she has built in England. Just like love, Poland was her first and she has fond memories (and family), but England is where she finds her stride and where she faces and eventually overcomes some of the most difficult obstacles in her life.

In retrospect, Monika does find the love of her life. I think the reader can interpret that the love of her life is in fact the appreciation she has for life and all the blessings within it. This is a lesson not only Mother’s should teach their little girls, but also ones that any true male (with a heart) can appreciate as well.

Monika Wisniewska’s, “Polish Girl” could easily be titled, American Girl, Indonesian Girl, British Girl or any other noun or adjective you feel comfortable in placing here. Overall, Monika is a beautiful, beguiling, complex and ultimately lovable human being and that’s something everyone can relate or desire in becoming.

In conclusion, “Polish Girl” is like the rare rainbow after a summer storm. It’s fleeting, beautiful, breathtaking and mesmerizing all at once. Yes, it won’t be in the sky forever, but you can see it from a distance, and carry it within your heart wherever you may go. Thank you Monika Wisniewska. The future is yours and we can’t wait to see where it leads you next.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

A very interesting story that I loved reading!

Readers are in for a wild ride of ups and downs as they follow the story of the author’s life as she moves from her native land of Poland to England, as she builds a life in her new country, and as she searches for love there. The story is compelling, and readers will find themselves drawn deeply into it. Just about everything good and bad that can happen to a person happens to the author in this book! Beyond the story, this book has many life lessons well worth pondering. Wisniewska writes brilliantly, and I marveled to think English is not her native language. She paints great word pictures of the many interesting places she visits as the story unfolds. I highly recommend this book. However, if you are a man beware: You may find yourself falling in love with this beautiful and charming and intelligent woman!

Wow Wow Wow!!! What a magical book about life!!!

It is not what I had expected but boy I enjoyed every minute of it. It is a book about finding true love and it's not what you think. I am so glad the author described her life experiences with such raw and fresh honesty, making me think about my own life experiences. I wish I had such maturity to look back at the past and draw meaningful, deep conclusions. It's a must read for anyone. Monika is a fantastic writer and has the skill to transform the reader to the places and situations as if one was there with her. I haven't read many books that are able to do that with such passion and natural flare. It reminds me of best writers such as Thomas Hardy. I am so happy I read this book and I have already ordered a few copies for my friends.

Well what can I say, I absolutely loved the book. The most unpredictable storyline I have read, the author is so open and honest about her feelings. This is Bridget Jones on a spiritual journey to find love. Deep, powerful, emotional, touching. I couldn't stop reading it from page one till the last one. Beautifully written, reminds of Stephen King in style. Amazing book, I hope the author writes more and that it will be Part 2? I never expected the ending. Not the typical predictable Hollywood style romance story. This is real life! When you read it, you will find something there for yourself. Lot's of wisdom and reflections on life and relationships and spirituality. Great book!

I really enjoyed the author's story. It shows the reality of being an immigrant in a foreign country that many do not want to talk about. Being Polish myself, I had similar experiences. Also with regards to men and relationships. It's a must read for anyone who wants to learn the same lessons that the author did by following her journey to finding what true love really is. It's a very deep, honest account of one Polish girl in pursuit of a dream to be loved and happy. Go read! I couldn't put it down. Read it in a day!

If I could I would give 10 stars!!!

Unbelievable true, honest story of the author's adventures in England. It shows the true challenges of a modern immigrant, rather than the false propaganda in the media. I enjoyed the author's reflections on relationships as I can relate to many of her experiences with men. The last part of the book is so enlightening and inspirational that I decided to follow the author's advice on mindfulness and feeling more happy and at peace in life. I recommended it to all my friends. Love, love, love the book!

Fantastic story, the middle part reminds me of 50 shades but with a slightly more realistic ending (well like real life, not a fiction happy ending). Beautuful writing style, love, love love it! When I started reading it at 6pm, I didn't finish till 3am. This is better than a criminal, so emotional. I am buying a couple of books as a Christmas present for my friends. just read it and you will see what I mean. This is something else!

Stunning, touching, raw, a masterpiece on love and relationships. I haven't read a book where the author writes about love so beautifully and so from the heart, and heartreak. The author has a great talent in drawing the reader into her world, felt I was with her all along her life journey, laughing and crying with her. Just wonderful. And the ending was not what I had expected. I hope the author writes Part2? Or at least another book? I am her fan for life. Read it!

Wow what a wonderful book!!

I am in awe of this wonderful story written by the author. It was not what I had expected at all. I thought it would just be a nice story of one Polish girl moving to England in search of a better life but what I got was a masterpiece of emotions hidden within and an inspiring journey of a beautiful soul. I experienced all the possible emotions from sadness, anger, frustration to love, bliss, joy, excitement and.. I am not a very emotional person. This book left me in tears at some points, I felt so sorry for the author to have to experience some of the most devastating heartbreaks, poverty, being thrown out into the street by a mentally ill landlord just because she didn't want to be with him. I loved reading about her happy times of falling in love, trusting, caring, travelling to stunning locations and just enjoying life. Her message on loving yourself is ultimately something I am striving to achieve myself, I am so grateful that she shared her story and I wish her all the best in life. She deserves it! Read it, you won't regret it.

Oh my God!!! What an incredible story from one amazing girl who was so brave to share the most intimate details from her life, including love life! I am blown away by the author's writing skills, I felt I was with her all the way on her incredible journey to self-discovery and finding unconditional love. You have to read this book, the best one I have read this year. I hope they make a movie from it as the author's raw honesty to talk about the most difficult topics in life is outstanding. Just read it and don't listen to hateful trolls. I can see how many readers can end up being jealous of the author's honesty, bravery and intelligence and, well some women may find her intimidating because she is also very beautiful. A powerful combination. It will be hard for you not to fall in love with her if you are a man so be careful. If only more women were so open and honest about their feelings! Wow just READ IT NOW! It touched my heart and I admit I cried a few times, always to be astonished by her strength to pick herself up and keep going.

The author who is Monika from Poland writes an excellent, interesting and true story on her experience of emigrating to work and live in England back in 2004. In her book she tells of finding romance with her boyfriend, experiencing racism in her job and workplace as she got her first job at the airport cleaning tables, even though she was qualified with an English teaching degree from university, at some point finding herself homeless and eventually returning to Poland. Did she decide to come back to England to follow her dream again? Well you need to read it to find out. It's a very good book and well written. I highly recommend it. I rate the book 10/10

Wow! One of the best written books I have ever read! The author can really describe the situations, action, drama, emotions in such an unbelievably real way that I felt like I was in the book with her. Her style reminds me of Stephen King and I recommend this book to anyone, especially many men can learn a lot of useful tips on how to understand and treat a woman. It gives a unique insight into a woman's mind which doesn't happen very often. Thank you Monika for writing your amazing story. I wish you all the love and happiness which you deserve!

This is a truly incredible story. I applaud the author for the courage to speak so openly about her love life. It's one of the best books I have ever read on relationships, even though it touches so many other important aspects and her life as an immigrant in the face of Brexit. I am English and until now, I haven't really thought how tough it may be for someone coming to this country to try to make a living. It's a real eye-opener. The story concludes in how the author finally found what she was looking for, self-love. She shared many useful tips, including meditation tips that I am willing to try myself. It's like a self-help book but based on the author real life experiences, hence she can share her wisdom. As a reader, I feel I can trust her deep insights. The book made me reflect on my own life and I will recommend this book to anyone who wants to reflect on their lives. I certainly did and I am grateful to the author for writing her story down. If only more people were so honest and open, able to draw such deep conclusions on past experiences, including love and relationships the world would be a better place. Go read!

This is one of the best memoirs I have ever read. It is real, gritty, sad and yet full of hope for the human spirit. Monika is to be admired for telling such a personal story of her entire life. Her dream to live happily ever after in England lives so strong inside her heart that she was ready to dedicate her young life to it. Her ability to tell her story honestly is admirable. A book which should be read by anyone contemplating a life full of hopes.

Beautiful story told by a very honest to the core woman in search of love, peace and happiness. I am so glad I read it. I found many similarities to my own life, searching for love in another person when I was missing the most important thing- loving myself. I have since started to pay atention to how I feel and already see small but significant changes in my life. I feel more at peace and I feel that forgiving many people who hurt me in the past was the key to shifting my life in a new direction. I love how that author opened her heart and soul, using her own examples of how she went through different relationships to get the the state of bliss. I hope she continues her spiritual journey because this book was transformational for me. If anyone is like me and wants to reflect upon their life and make small changes, this book is a must. I am so happy I read it. Thank you Monika for sharing your story! Only read it if you are like me, ready to face your own life experiences, otherwise you will not understand the deep meaning of it. And I hope Peter will understand what he did, so does John. I don't really understand why men behave the way they do sometimes. We are not the easiest lot to deal with but the author made the most sensibe conclusions from all of this, when you love someone, you don't leave them. You stay.

I LOVE THIS POLISH GIRL FOLLOWING HER DREAMS!!

This book has left me thinking about life, love and relationships for days! What a touching, moving storyteller the author is. So raw, so pure, so honest, so no-bullshit story that made we gasp from different emotions. She is not afraid to start from nothing in a foreign country, on her own, moving bravely through countless challenges. She is so inspiring that she made me feel ashamed of everything I have been taking for granted in the UK. It's an eye-opening story that every British person should read. It gives an intimate insight into all the possible challenges an EU citizen can have in this country. The UK Brexit propaganda against immigrants is being exposed here as a big, fat, racist lie. Most people coming to the UK are genuine, hard-working people who like this Polish girl just want to be happy. A must read in the current times for everyone. So glad I did. I cannot recommend it more. I also loved her reflections on different types of relationships she had, the good and the bad. People do come and go and not many stay forever. Very beautiful and touching book. Wow.

What an Amazing book !! It's one of the best books I have read and found it to be one of those books you just don’t want to leave down. It's a book to tug at your emotions, to offer comfort to anyone who has suffered loss and it will make you reflect on your own life. I love the raw honesty, the exposure of the harsh reality of life and an insight of the terrible effect that the Brexit vote has on our friends from the rest of Europe.

Great story about life and searching for love. I am a man and found it very insightful. I felt like I was let into the secret mind of a woman. The best book on relationships and love I have ever read. It was so emotional, I had to stop halfway through as it resonated with my own life in an incredible way. It also made me look into yoga and meditation, just like the author recommended as it seems to have amazing healing powers to find balance and peace. Go read it.

THe best book I have read this year. Well done to the author for her bravery and courage to speak abut such difficult subjects from her life like love, relationships, betrayals, falsness, hatred and materialism. Whoever claims that only women can be seduced by money they should read this story and see for themselves how men can behave too. Marriage can have nothing to do with love sometimes, with materialism and money too, even if you are a man. I loved the author's raw honesty in describing some of her most painful life experiences. I also found it very inspiring in her message to find true unconditional love. And my favourite guy from them all was Adonis and the Greek trgedy, og lord if it was me I would have dealt with him not so nicely. Great book, beautiful descriptions of many historical places, great reflections on life. A must read for anyone, man or a woman, especially a a man.

Cała historia zmusza do refleksji.
