Digital Human: The Fourth Revolution of Humanity Includes Everyone

Rate this book
For the first time, everyone on the planet can connect with everyone else through the digital network. This is transforming lives through financial inclusion and digital identities. It means everyone can talk, trade and transact—anytime, anywhere. Such a radical revolution has happened only three times in human becoming human, becoming civilised and becoming commercial. Becoming digital is the fourth revolution, and it is changing the very nature of humanity.

Chris Skinner, author of the bestselling Digital Bank, explores the transformations that are sweeping through all spheres of the domination of global digital giants; the advent of new financial structures (FinTech); the disruption brought about by new forms of currency like bitcoin; the challenges facing traditional banks; the uplifting of the world’s poor; and the rise of artificial intelligence.

Digital Human is a visionary roadmap for the future, a timely guide on how to navigate the worlds of business and finance as we create the next generation of humanity.

Includes the first-ever in-depth English-language case study of Alipay, the mobile wallet that aims to be used by over two billion humans.

I found this book to be fascinating. It was a really unusual blend of history, technology and finance that I don’t think you would find anywhere else.

The opening section of the book and the history lesson it gave was excellent in its own right and really gave credibility to the author’s experience and global research.

I found the remainder of the book equally engaging. I was naturally drawn, as an IT person, to the narrative on the past, present and future of the internet, but also found the interweaving of the financial future elements interesting albeit to a lesser extent. I am of course aware of the author’s background and area of expertise and feel sure that those more adept with finance than myself would garner a great deal from it.

Overall, I found this an excellent read and definitely a thought provoking one.

This is a great read and makes you realize where we are heading as a society. The internet and AI are changing the way we live and connecting us with so many new people across the planet.
I really liked the Case History at the end of the book and the Jack Ma story and how business in China and India has different challenges. Those of us in the West really need to look into what is going on in these other nations because they could very well overtake us very rapidly...

If possible I would give this book a 3.5 rating as opposed to a 3. The content is really fascinating and I found myself not able to put the book down in the early chapters. The chapters provided a a history lesson on humankind then added for the most recent years the impact technology has created on humans. The book then made a shift and I would take a guess the prior books (Digital Bank and Value Web) written by author Chris Skinner would have perhaps helped me make the transition a little easier to follow. The focus shifted to the future of life with no physical money, but a digital wallet that enhanced the usage of money along with a variety of other services such as identification. The books proves the technology is already here and highlights examples of countries and the impact it has created in the financial industry with TechFin or FinTech pending your preference. The book concludes with a case study on China that challenges the perspective we are often pushed in media regarding the threat they pose. the case study highlights China as a leader in addressing financial inclusion leveraging technology and their focus on bringing their technical knowledge to help other developing countries.  What is interesting is this book was published in 2017 and its easy to state advancements have only accelerated. The predictions in this book are very optimistic. Too optimistic from my purview, but that is why I found it to be a bit interesting.

The title is misleading but this is ok book. Some of the topics were new to me especially what happens outside Europe. The approach is ultra positive and looking at the different topics from the flipside would have lifted my rating (use of data and AI have ethical problems that should be discussed). Sometimes the analysis is superficial.

Ant financial case study was better than the book.

I would read this if you want to know what might happen in the future

Chris Skinner is a financial markets commentator and former advisor to the White House and the World Bank. In this book he makes some interesting arguments about the future of technology and there’s an interesting case study of Ant Financial and Alipay but he simply down’t want to consider the dangers of the tech he evangelises here, which was a big negative for me - especially when he uses examples from China, where it is part of state control.

Having read extensively Skinner's blog I had to read his book which offered also an additional deep dive to Any groove.
Did I enjoy it? Since most of the ideas presented were not new to me, I didn't find it that inspirational or profound.
Nevertheless if you are new to the shifting financial landscape it is probably a worthy read...

The author's expertise appears to be mainly in fintech and techfin. The title is a bit misleading and most of the material is heavily slanted in the fintech/techfin direction. What is there about these topics however is quite fascinating.

Another great take by Chris Skinner on how tech innovation will alter the nature of financial services. Easy to read and thought-provoking. My highlight: the interview series with the Antgroup executives
