When Charlotte answers an advertisement for a mail-order bride, the last thing she expects is that the man who placed it is Logan, her former fiancé who had jilted her long ago. He's come to New Orleans on behalf of the men of Last Chance, a booming town in the Washington Territory, but he doesn't intend to leave without the woman he's never been able to forget. Charlotte decides to board the ship headed for Last Chance, determined to make a new life for herself, far away from the war-ravaged South, but she has no intention of falling for Logan once again. Can Logan change her mind during the long voyage north, or will she marry someone else once they arrive?
I am the award-winning traditional and indie published author of Western Historical Romance and Victorian Historical Romance. My books are deeply emotional and a bit on the dark side.
ONE LAST CHANCE is the first book in the Last Chance Brides series. Though each book will follow one couple, it is best if you read this series in the order of release, especially this first book since it establishes the town and the scenario.
One of my favorite tropes – a second chance at love – set in the reconstruction after the Civil War.
Josh and Logan have advertised for twenty-two women to be mail-order brides for their new town in the Washington Territory. Logan doesn’t want one of the twenty-two, he has chosen New Orleans for their advertising and interviewing so that he can pursue bride number twenty-three, his former fiancé.
I loved this story. There is the perfect blend of righteous anger on the behalf of Charlotte, groveling from Logan, and swoon-worthy and sigh-inducing proof that he is sincere. I love his persistence, but also his chivalry.
This is the first book that I have read from Diana Bold, but I am looking forward to reading more. Based on this book, I love her style.
Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC via Booksprout, my opinions are my own and are given freely.
Title: ONE LAST CHANCE Series: Last Chance Brides #1 Category /Genre: Historical Romance, American Civil War Recommended for: 18+ due to sexual content Grammar/editing: received as an unedited ARC / errors excused Received from: Diana Bold
This is a very short romantic novella. It did suffer somewhat from the classic problem with novellas--the dreaded information dump--but it suffered even more from what I see as the biggest fault of novellas: trying to tell a story in a short form that really needs to be told in a longer novella or even a novel. The author tries to do too much in this story, first introducing the overarching set-up for bringing mail-order brides to this small town and then the story of the couple featured in this particular book of the series. These two ideas combined would have probably have been fine in a longer book, but in such a short novella, it did not. I particularly thought the couple's actual story got short shrift. Given their complicated past and her struggles after he abandoned her, the author just didn't provide enough space for them to work out their issues in a believable way. To be told well, this story simply needed more pages. In the end, I found myself highly disappointed by this book.
Logan left Charlotte before the war due to his fear of becoming like his father. They both loved each other but fear drove him away.
Eight years later, Charlotte’s life is barely living. She has lost so much. The war took many lives. Her father returned only to take his own life. Her home was buried down and she was forced to work for a relative who was cruel to her.
Logan placed an advertisement for twenty brides to take them to the small new town in Washington state. He is planning on finding his past love and begging for forgiveness. Only she walks in to be interviewed for a bride.
Will she get past the hurt? Will forgiveness be given and will second chances be granted.
Won’t say… but I will tell you I enjoyed the book.
Although this is a very short book, the author did a fine job of differentiating the characters. For a short story like this to work, the main characters had to know each other before. Charlotte was engaged to Logan eight years ago. He suddenly told her he couldn't marry her and disappeared.
They meet again in New Orleans because Charlotte is signing up as a mail-order bride for Washington Territory. Logan came to New Orleans to help his friend find twenty-two potential brides while he tries to find Charlotte. Charlotte sees him, and their meeting doesn't go well.
Last Chance Brides – Total of 4 ** 1. One Last Chance(2018) 2. Chance of a Lifetime (2018)
Cute short story about second chances. It was a second chance at love, a second chance at friendship, and a second chance to fond security. I enjoyed the characters in this story. All of the interactions between the two main friend groups were full of funny, witty, banter. Logan had to endure Charlotte’s fear and anger to get to their HEA, but it was worth the wait for both of them.
Different stories for the Last Chance Brides and the story I am reviewing is One Last Chance. A well written second chance story for Charlotte and Logan, he had left he at the altar. I enjoyed reading this story. This is a set of stories dealing with Logan, Cole, Joshua, Garrett and the women who come into their lifes.
While not a total page turner, the characters and their situations kept the story moving at a nice pace and was just the right length. It was a nice change to other Mail Bride versions which sounded plausible. The hint of some of the other girl’s pasts is a nice lure to keep reading the series.
Book 1 started off with a great story leading the reader right into the next 3 books. Charlotte loved Logan even as a child, they were childhood friends. When he jilted her at the altar her life changed for the worse. Accidentally finding him again leads to a story you must read.
Wonderful story, great story line, and characters who will steal your heart. 22 men building a town Called Last Chance " 24 women in desperate need of rescueing Charlotte signed up to become a wife to a stranger, to make a new life from her old one, What she got was a second chance with her first love Logan. A happy ending for those two. Thank you ❤️
Logan had left Charlotte years ago with a broken heart. She vowed to never let another man do that to her again. Brides for Last Chance seemed her only option.
He talked his friends into going to the town he knew his lost love had been to bring back brides for the town he lived in. In hopes that he could talk her unto being his bride.
This was good to read but so negative! It's a good lesson in persistence tho. It has a good outline of what's coming in other books in this series! I look forward to reading them
Charlotte lost everything in the war and is shocked when she in desperation answers the brides wanted ad to discover that her long lost fiance, Logan, was conducting the interviews.
One Last Chance is a short story with a mail order bride and second chance at love tropes. It’s sweet that Charlotte and Logan got another chance after he abandoned her seven years earlier. There’s no sex in this HR but there is the enduring love between two people.
I enjoyed reading Last Chance Brides. It kept my interest to the end. I'm sure anyone who likes mail order bride stories will enjoy this one too. Happy reading!
I enjoyed reading One Last Chance by Diana Bold. It's my first book by this author. I am looking forward to reading the other three books in the series!
A book to. really enjoyed this series of books With 22 girls in a ship beaded to find adventures and a new handand. Happytime for all the young people. An interest book
A heartwarming, lovely romance, filled with beautiful characters, strife trials and tribulations and love that conquers all. A must read if you are into romances.
I liked the story, but it had too much talk of sex. Although Logan's roommate dallies with one of the "chaperones", thankfully it isn't told in detail. And I thought it was tacky that he was fooling around with her despite being interested in on of the last chance brides.
I loved everything about this book! First of all, historical romances are not my normal read but this book will be the first of many. This book is well written, the characters are strong, and likeable. I love the twist of the mail order bride idea, it's REFRESHING. The only negative is that it left me wanting to know more about the other would be brides and their pasts and what led them to this point. Hopefully we will find out as the series unfolds. I loved the characters of Charlotte and Logan and they actually made you believe that second chances actually exist! I can't wait to see what's in store to this set of characters in the coming books. The ending was expected but I love happy endings sometimes. Lastly, I received a complimentary copy from the editor.
Such a heart warming story of love lost and found again. This brought back to me what I loved about reading romance novels.
Charlotte is a strong yet sweet heroine willing to go to great lengths to give herself a better life and get away from a painful past. Logan is a flawed hero who once let the woman of his dreams go. Now he will have only one last chance to win her back.
I loved every minute of getting to know Emma Connor's wonderful characters and you can bet I'm rooting for Hannah to snag Josh cause his time will come! It's been a very long time since I've found an author that I'm this excited to read more of and I can't wait for the rest of the brides stories' to come.
