Overcoming Positional Vertigo

Rate this book
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV, is dizziness that comes from the inner ear. It affects more than eight million people in the United States alone. The good news is that this condition can be managed at home. Carol A. Foster, an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Colorado, Denver School of Medicine, developed a maneuver that allows sufferers to treat their own symptoms. Her YouTube video demonstrating the maneuver has more than five million views. Written in a friendly and approachable tone, Overcoming Positional Vertigo provides readers a more in-depth guide to the diagnosis of BPPV, the specifics of treatments and maneuvers, and preventative measures one can take to avoid recurrence.

Having Ménière’s disease, I’m familiar with what BPPV is so was very interested in what updates as well as definitive explanations of vertigo and dizziness.
This book was very well written and thoroughly explained all the varying nuances of dizziness and other related issues. Unfortunately, much of the book was written more for physicians and other health care workers but only helpful if they actually read the book. It might behoove the author to write a similar book geared more for patients and their caregivers. It would be very beneficial as a well-educated patient is more likely to work with the doctor rather than to request drugs for something more easily done by exercises.

I have experienced episodes of BPPV. It’s good to see a book such as this that can offer medical info re. maneuvers and procedures to help alleviate this condition. For anyone afflicted with BPPV (which can be quite a frightening experience first time round before receiving proper Dx) this book is a great go-to resource.

This was a really interesting book on positional vertigo , accompanied with exercises to alleviate / heal BBPV.

While I thankfully don’t suffer from BBPV I found the information presented really clearly and simply enough to be able to follow through the exercises if ever required. I think this will be a helpful book to many .

I was so glad to find this book as it is an informative book on this subject. I had this for over twenty years with no relief. Ten years ago I found a Physical Therapist that was able to assist me. I have tried to let friends about this treatment but to no avail. I am very glad to be able to recommend this book to everyone that there is a relief.to be found.
I would like to thank the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book, in exchange for an honest review.

Having been recently diagnoses with BPVV after a couple of months of occasional episodes of vertigo I want to learn more about it. I had to get this book from interlibrary loan, and found it very helpful.
Easy to read and understand and good drawings.

Dr. Carol Foster has presented a valuable approach to living with BPPV. Combining her personal experience with superb medical acumen and a compassionate approach, the reader is provided with lucid explanations of the causes and effects of this condition, along with a common-sense series of safe maneuvers that offer relief to debilitating episodes of vertigo. Clear explanatory diagrams enhance the text, and Dr. Foster's innovative "half somersault" exercise enables relief from the unwelcome and unexpected occasions of dizziness and imbalance that BPPV imposes. For the many who suffer from this affliction, Dr. Foster's advice offers welcome and effective resolutions.

This book gives some positive and very helpful information on BPPV. I had my first attack about 1 1/2 yrs ago, with multiple episodes within a 3 month period. Then, no episodes for next year and a half. However, they recently started again with episodes two weeks apart. I will try the Half Somersault maneuver next time, as that seems like the best at-home treatment. I would recommend this book to anyone with Vertigo, especially BPPV.

The publisher provided me with the opportunity to read this in exchange for providing feedback. (via NetGalley)

I thought this was an informative and helpful book regarding vertigo. One of the things I appreciated was that the author herself suffered from vertigo and could really understand what it's like go through that, as a lot of people (fortunately) never know that feeling.

This is the best book I’ve read on the topic. The author is a trained specialist in the area who has also experienced vertigo. She developed an at home treatment for people to do themselves. While I haven’t had success with this treatment, many others have. She offers other advice in the final chapter for living with recurring episodes.

I found this book to be informative and helpful. I have not tried any of the methods yet as my vertigo comes and goes. My Mother also suffers from Vertigo, so if she ever has a bad attack I wanted to be educated and have some helpful methods for her to try as well. It is very in depth explaining the inner ear workings and such and therefore is a little bit of dry reading but I learned and was mostly interested in the various methods explained. I would recommend this to anyone who has, or knows someone who has Vertigo, just to learn and be informed about the condition and possible treatment methods in the event of a severe attack.

I was in a car accident in July & one month later I started having severe vertigo spells. They are improving some over time or I am just getting used to being dizzy. My triggers are moving my head to the left & also tipping my head back. This book goes into a lot of detail about vertigo. The focus of this book is on BBPV vertigo. I found this book very interesting to read.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV, is dizziness due to an unbalance or crystal movement in the inner ear. It can happen when you are sitting, walking or laying down and sometimes the dizziness is so bad that it makes one nauseous. The author, Carol Foster explains simple exercises that can be done at home to alleviate these attacks. They are simple exercises that can be done on your bed. There are also videos on Youtube which show exactly how to do them. No longer do you have to live with this debilitating dizziness and most cures can be done at home by the person themselves.

Dr. Carol Foster has written a very scholarly book that opens with "Vertigo is a worthy foe, and my aim is to end it."

If you've ever suffered a bout of vertigo, you know it can be debilitating. I was keen to read this book because I have had vertigo more than once and wanted to learn more about it and how to deal with it. The book details the causes of vertigo, various exercises and maneuvers to alleviate your symptoms, and provides tips to help prevent future recurrences. It is filled with loads of facts, figures, and information and is an ideal reference for anyone dealing with vertigo.
