Many people know that Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) was a Mexican artist, a feminist icon who lived in the famous Blue House and whose work includes The Two Fridas. What, perhaps, they don't know is that 55 of her 143 artworks are self-portraits; that her painting Roots holds the record for a Latin American artwork, having sold for $5.6 million in 2006; that her love letters sold for $137,000; that she married her husband twice; or that she arrived for her first solo exhibition in an ambulance. This book casts a modern eye over her life and work, with an array of irresistible facts and figures converted into infographics to reveal the artist behind the pictures.

Szeretem az infografikát, szeretem Frida Kahlo képeit. Szinte mindent elolvastam/megnéztem már ebben a témakörben, mégis tudott újat mondani ez a fajta feldolgozás. Lényegre törő, de elég alapos. Minimális pontlevonás a kisebb pontatlanságokért (művek címe) meg a rövidségéért jár. Grafikailag, nyomdatechnikailag igényes, megtalálja az összhangot a festő stílusa, színvilága és a modern infografika között. Szívesen olvasnék ilyet más festőről is.

This is a good book for people who want an introduction in Frida Kahlo and her life without it being too long or too hard to read. It is a beautiful book on the inside, it has a lot of graphs and images and includes some of her most famous works. I bought this book at a Frida Kahlo Exhibition in Budapest and am thoroughly delighted that I did.

I think though if you know a lot of information about Frida Kahlo this book is not a must buy but an extra to a collection of books that people might have. It is a short book with it being only 94 pages, so it can be easily read in it a night. The book gives a lot of good background information in Frida's life and how she became such a good artist.

Conocía ya la historia de Frida gracias a la biografía ilustrada por María Hesse y a la popular película del 2002. Sin embargo, esta forma de conocer a Frida ha sido mucho más original. En este corto libro, narrado en forma de diagramas de diseño gráfico, he aprendido datos de Frida que desconocía y que no son los populares y he podido apreciar otros aspectos de su vida que hasta ahora para mí eran desconocidos, como la simbología de alguna de sus pinturas más famosas o sus relaciones con otras personalidades famosas coetáneas a ella. Así como diagramas sobre sus operaciones y su sufrimiento. En esta mini-biografía cargada de diseño, color y originalidad, encontrarás los datos más importantes de la vida del que hoy se ha convertido en un icono feminista y del arte de la primera mitad del siglo pasado y conocerás aspectos de su vida de una forma aneja y muy divertida. Lo recomiendo encarecidamente.


Nota: Lo he leído en inglés, pero creo que se puede entender perfectamente con un nivel básico-medio. No sé si existe la traducción al español.

Szerettem, hogy tudott újat mondani, holott nem először találkoztam Frida Kahloval. Tetszik ez az egységes, Kahlo személyiségéhez illő élénk kinézet. Elvarázsoltak az infografika ábrák, de úgy általában véve nagyon stramm kis kiadvány lett. Azt hiszem, hogy egyedül az zavart, hogy a zöld háttéren néha elég molyolós volt kiolvasni a fekete betűket.

Szerintem a Frida Kahlo rajongók polcáról nem hiányozhat, mert maga a kiadvány is egy aprócska műalkotás.

Tudtátok például, hogy Frida a férjével, Diego Rivera-val kétszer kötött házasságot? Vagy hogy életében összesen három önálló kiállítása volt, a siker csak halála után jött? Mivel nem vezetett nyilvántartást a festményeiről, ezért a világ számos pontján, magángyűjteményekben is vannak képei, az 1990-es évek után pedig számos hamisítvány is megjelent. Magánéletét tekintve pedig az 1925-ben elszenvedett balesete elméletileg összefügg későbbi halálával is? Ebben a balesetben egyébként Frida Kahlo annyira megsérült, hogy hosszú hónapok kellettek, míg rehabilitálódott, amikor pedig kiemelték a buszból, a testén a vére, illetve az egyik utastársa által szállított aranypor keveréke volt, mire a bámészodók azt hitték, hogy táncosnő.

Azért is tetszett nagyon a könyv, mert a rengeteg információ és adat mellett a grafikák is csodásak, a szövegek pedig nem csak tényszerű információt közölnek, hanem olykor magyaráznak is, kicsit jobban kifejtik az adott témát.

Una novela gráfica muy completa e interesante sobre la vida de esta prodigio del arte, donde se nos va relatando su vida y trabajos a través de ilustraciones y algunos de sus mismos trabajos. Súper recomendado para aquellos apasionados del arte.

English and Spanish review.

I loved it, it's amazing how the author caught my attention in a creative way, I couldn't get away from the book. Before reading this work I thought I knew everything about Frida after reading a lot about her, watching documentaries and watching her movie more than once, but I was wrong, this book has data that I had never read before and shows Frida's creative side to the fullest, which in other works, documentaries or movies is always overshadowed by her relationship/marriage with Diego. Sophie Collins has put Frida's name up high for everyone to remember and notice. I'm glad she included Kahlo in her Biographic's collection.

Me encantó, es increíble como la autora captó mi atención de una forma creativa, no podía despegarme del libro. Antes de leer esta obra pensé que sabia todo sobre Frida tras leer bastante sobre ella, ver documentales y ver su película mas de una vez, pero me equivoqué, este libro tiene datos que nunca antes había leído y muestra el lado creativo de Frida al máximo, lo cual en otras obras, documentales o películas siempre es opacado por su relación amorosa con Diego. Sophie Collins ha puesto el nombre de Frida en alto una vez más. Me alegro que haya incluido a Kahlo en su colección de Biographics.

THE PERFECT COMPANION PIECE. Pleasantly suprised at how much I enjoyed this book tbh - the whole “BIOGRAPHIC” series I thought would be a super vapid and vague skim though an artists career and I was so so wrong. Also love the way it’s structured with the “life” being covered in the first chapter and then the work, legacy etc etc really delved into later which felt fresh as instead of it reading like a Wikipedia page its unorthodox construction just made it way more enjoyable.

As a Frida Kahlo novice really felt it covered so much in so little and feel all these “BIOGRAPHIC” books (currently enjoying the Rembrandt one) should be used as a lovely intro before delving into Said artists other works aka Frida’s diaries and her other books and works will be seeing me later down the line indeed.

So...I checked out this book from the library, not realizing the format. I still enjoyed the Frida Kahlo 101 journey. You learn about her philosophy, temperament, major life milestones, relationships, and geographic and political significance. The physical book is also gorgeous, and the cover uses colors significant to her life's work. It was a quick, well-organized read before I start The diary of Frida Kahlo.

Di con este libro porque amo coleccionar biografías de Frida, y al ser uno de los últimos que compré, no pude evitar comparar y eso me jugó en contra.
todos los cuadritos,linéas temporales,flechas y los colores que tiene la verdad me abrumaron, me pareció un montón. el contenido esta bueno, simplificado y preciso, no se explayaba mas de lo necesario, pero siento que la edición/ formato no acompañaron

В целом неплохо, можно прочитать за полчаса-час. Разумеется, у меня не было ожиданий, что там будет много информации, так что в этом плане я осталась довольна.

А вот что реально подпортило впечатление — опечатки (раза три точно увидела слово «потрет» вместо «портрет», и это я ещё не вчитывалась). И ещё часто встречаются изображения, которые расположены прямо посередине разворота, но при этом раскрыть книгу нормально не получается. Выглядит не очень красиво. Я специально покупала бумажную книгу, поэтому было немного обидно.

It's a great little book. Graphics are excellent. Loads of hints about all aspects of her life ... but if you want to know more about her, at least you know what to search for on Google ;-)
