Witchcraft & Winds

Rate this book
Burnt-out social worker Natalie Ethridge thinks she's caught a lucky break--a free cottage from her Great-Aunt. With nothing to lose, Natalie heads for the hills, or, in this case, the mountains. Turns out the cottage comes with a big family secret—Natalie is from a long line of witches. She quickly discovers that living in a new town isn't easy, especially when lightning strikes whenever she loses her temper!

When an orphaned eleven-year-old stands accused of murder, Natalie’s social worker instincts compel her to solve the case and clear the child, even if it means digging into painful secrets the town considers long buried. Secrets that paint a target on her back.

Between her crazy family, magic lessons, investigating a murder, and the sexy witch detective hell-bent on keeping her in line, Natalie’s not sure which one will be the death of her first--her newfound abilities or the killer.

3.75 Stars. This was a fun and entertaining read. The author Spring is actually a penname for Noelle Winters. Her books are pretty popular so I felt good about giving this new series a chance. The best way to describe this would be a lesfic paranormal cozy mystery. Since it is a cozy mystery the book has a lighter feeling about it. It is a murder mystery but there is no explicit violence and even has some humor. It is also currently free with Kindle Unlimited.

I have to admit when I first started reading the book, I was worried. I didn’t like it in the beginning. The way the main character was discovering witches and other magical being are real, was a bit out there. I didn’t find how the main character was behaving to be believable. I also didn’t care for some of the earlier dialogue. It almost seemed immature and a little choppy. There were also a lot of new characters and magical abilities to keep straight. But, once you get past the first few chapters… the book totally changes. The writing was better, everything started to flow, and I started really enjoying the read.

There is no romance in this first book. However, there is a potential love interest for the main character and I’m excited to see how it may progress.

This really was fun read. It defiantly kept me entertained and turning the pages. Yes, the beginning is rough, but once you get past it, the book really starts to flow. I love reading mysteries, but it’s nice to read a book that is on the lighter side instead of so dark and gritty. The second book is already out and I will absolutely be reading it soon.

A very entertaining "lesfic paranormal mystery cozy," as described by its author.

Witchcraft & Winds brings Natalie Etheridge to her new home in Pine Lake, AZ. She's more than ready to leave her life as dedicated social worker in the Twin Cities, MN. Burn out has taken its toll on the thirty year old employee of CPS. Her ticket out came via a letter informing her that she inherited a cottage from her Great Aunt Mabel. After driving cross country and arriving at her destination around midnight, she opened the door to her new home with a key that was enclosed with the letter. Immediately, she heard a knock on the door and a voice called out to get her attention. It seemed that her inheritance came fully stocked with secrets and mysteries, more than anyone would ever suspect.

This novel by Emilia Spring (another seasonal pen name for Noelle Winters) is highly imaginative. Pine Lake has a wide assortment of witch folk and they come in all sorts of flavors. Natalie happens to be a weather witch and she hadn't known a single thing about it. She never believed in magic and grew up never knowing her birth parents. She was adopted and loved by parents who died in a car crash. The paranormal storyline fits nicely with the mystery story central to Witchcraft & Winds.

The recent death of Emmaline left her eleven year old granddaughter Gianna without any relatives. Natalie takes an instant interest in Gianna's welfare, the unfolding murder mystery and the investigating officer Detective Riley. Most of the magically inclined characters are caught up in the murder case and many of them are suspects. The paranormal aspect of the novel was handled creatively. As a newly minted weather witch, Natalie can manifest lightning bolts, make rain showers, manipulate wind patterns and harness beautiful rainbow imbued magic. Book One, in the Weather Witch series, tells a fanciful and danger packed story. Any potential lesbian romance plotline was sidelined to the sequels.

This was a really fun book. At first glance, this would be the author's debut, but little did I know that she has another pen name - Noelle Winter.

This book stars Natalie, an adopted burnt out social worker who randomly received a letter, a key, and a house that belonged to her great aunt. She's had enough of living vicariously through sad situations, and decides she needs a break; a new house, a new town, perfect.

In an attempt to not spoil anything, I'll just list a few aspects of the book that I really enjoyed.

A) While I enjoy fantasy as much as anyone else, I've never read one quite like this. When I think "witch", I either think Pagan, or the stereotypical Halloween type witch. To my pleasant surprise, the author had a very fleshed out setting where witches inherited different affinities based on lineage. For example, a cooking witch, a weather witch, a time witch, a metal witch, a clairvoyance witch, a water, fire, earth witch, etc. In addition to having their own unique abilities, they all share one- to create a barrier, for protection. A cooking witch might use ingredients to create the barrier, a water witch would use water, metal for metal, etc. It was superbly fun.

B) Beneath all of the fun and games there was the undercurrent of who murdered the pet shop owner. While I did figure out who it was a little earlier than I had hoped, there were a few genuinely creepy moments (relatively).

The only thing I would note is that this is definitely a "set-up" book for future entries. Because of that, the working of a romance are set in place, but this is definitely not a romance book. Yet

Despite some dark themes, this book was a lighthearted read that kept me interested the whole time. The pacing was well done, I didn’t once feel the need to break from the book or that it was moving too fast. All of the characters seem to have depth to them, and I’m excited to hear more about the ones that we have minimal contact with in this first book. The main character is likable and relatable, and Gianna immediately endears herself to the reader. I found myself relating to Sam time and time again, and Avery and Margauritte were likable as well. They make for an excellent main cast. I definitely look forward to further books in the series.

A good set up for a mystery series

A burned out Social worker, Natalie, inherits a house from a relative she didn’t know she had. Natalie takes the opportunity to change her life up a bit and moves from Minnesota to Arizona. Not only does the move result in a climate change but the move changes Natalie’s whole relationship to climate. Read the book to find out how this happens.

Too much exposition, and it suffers from a lack of scene transition and a lot of telling.

A social worker witch?

Loved it. Burnt out by her social work, she thinks that the cottage she has inherited is the answer to her prayers. Throw in a young girl accused of murder, new witch powers, zany family and a host of quirky characters for a fabulous new series. Wonderful storyline that is down to earth whilst still being full of the supernatural. More please.
