With a hint of Practical Magic and woven around the British cost, Joanne Mallory’s debut novella, Thunder Moon, launches the Witches of Langston Bay series.

Thunder Moon paints a beguiling love story, where witchery and magic are real, and love is the ultimate prize.

Thea Lavelle is a hereditary witch whose gift came late. But when she meets Marc, her best friend’s brother, she realizes their souls have crossed paths before.

Devastated by the loss of a patient, grief and guilt have left Marc burnt out, and he knows the best thing for him is to head home to recover.

But as they are inexplicably drawn together, it soon becomes clear that fate is at work.

Are they strong enough to confront their unknown past, and still build a future together?

ARC received in exchange for an honest review.

Well...to be honest I expected more from the story. I know, it's super short but I think that's what the problem was. There are too many details in it that are simply not needed and those that are needed aren't there. I just didn't connect to the characters and the first half of the book was really hard to get into. The second half was a bit better. It's a love story with fantasy elements, such as ghosts and witches. When I saw the blurb I thought I'd really enjoy the plot but in truth the plot has so much unused potential. Had the book been maybe 100 pages longer, then this story would have made more sense and I would've probably enjoyed it properly.
That's just my opinion and I'm sure not all will agree with it. If you like the story, then I'm happy for 'ya. :)

Thea Lavelle is a e hereditary witch whose gift came late to her. She is still learning what her magic can do. When she meets her best friends brother Marc she finds out her magic has its own ideas of what it wants. The fates are pushing Marc back home to the bay of his teenage years. Grief and guilt have left Marc burnt out so its off to his family home to get the skill of healing.

This is the 1 novella of a triology is not normally something I would pick up but I will read them all eventually.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Crooked Cat Publishing and the author Joanne Mallory for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is an intriguing start to a new paranormal series set in a small community on the British coast. Thea Lavelle discovered she is a witch whilst away at University in London. Her best friend, Ellie, helped her learn to cope and control her powers and both returned to the comparatively tranquil homes. Now Ellie’s brother is also returning home. He’s a healer and a military man who had planned to be a lifer, but is reevaluating his choices after a patient of his unexpectedly commits suicide. He’s returned to his childhood home and when he meets Thea the attraction is instant and mutual. Thea, however, realises their souls have crossed paths before and she’s anxious to discover how and when. Fate is definitely at work but will their past interact with their present to enable them to have a future together or to tear them apart?

The story is set in contemporary times, with characters who are part of the community but have secret abilities. The magic is a relatively minor part of this story, though the spirits and ghosts have a more significant role. It is a novella, a quick but entertaining read. I look forward to reading future books in this series to learn more about the characters and discover just what has happened between some of them to make them so wary of each other. The author’s descriptions of the setting really bring it to life in the imagination of the reader and were a key strength in the story. I’ll definitely look out for future stories in the series as I want to get to know the characters better and discover what happens to them all!

I requested and received a copy of this novel, via NetGalley. This is my honest review after choosing to read it.

BLURB

Thea Lavelle has a lot to juggle: a teaching career that is ramping up, keeping tabs on her globetrotting family and fine tuning her craft.

Thea is a hereditary witch whose gift came late. She’s still learning exactly what her wayward magic can do, but on meeting Marc, her best friend’s brother, she soon discovers her magic has some firm ideas about it wants.

The fates have been pushing Marc back home, to the bay of his teenage years. He knows that grief and guilt have left him burnt out, and that his family’s particular skill with healing is the best place for him.

He’d left home not knowing what he was searching for. Could it be that she’d been in Langston Bay all along?

Thunder Moon is the first novella in a trilogy of love, family and age-old magic.

CHARACTERS

When the book started I thought the entire book was going to center around Marc but then I learnt Thea was the main character ( Third person with the PoV of Thea). All the characters in the book seem like normal people except they have magical powers. I liked Thea and Marc definitely is drool worthy but I'd have liked to see a more detailed character development. I suppose there isn't much time to build up the characters slowly as this is a novella but the lack of development in the characters unsettled me a bit.

PLOT

Ok let's get something straight. I went into this novel expecting a magical story and this book did not deliver that. I would describe this book as adult fiction with a little magic in the background. There is also insta-love and some hot and heavy romance. I was intrigued by the magic part but was disappointed to see so less of it. I think I might have enjoyed the book had it not been for my expectations. The book ends happily but there are a couple of questions (Why a certain character doesn't like another character and such) for which I believe we'll find the answers in the next book.

WRITING

The writing was quite beautiful. I love how beautifully the author describes the coastal setting. Except for a couple of editing errors, the writing was quite smooth and captivating.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THE BOOK

- The writing
- The setting

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK

- The lack of magic the blurb promises
- Lack of character development

WILL I BE READING THE REST OF THE TRILOGY?

I think I might to see what happens but it isn't high up on my TBR.

CONCLUSION

It's a good read if you like adult fiction with a sprinkle of magic (and quite a bit of hot romance)

Thunder Moon The witch and the healer are drawn to one another and they don't know why. Thunder Moon is a good opening for this new series. Both leads are reader friendly and the story is filled with bits of magic throughout (though I wish there was more). I must mention that I had to Google several terms in order to know the meaning. The story is set in the UK and some of the terminology goes along with the local.Thank you to Netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review

In Thunder Moon, you enter a world where witches and healers exist. But don't for a moment think that you're entering a fantasy world that is different than the Earth you live in. No, this is modern day England, in a little town in a bay not far from the bustling streets of London.

description

You are introduced first to Marc. He is a therapist of some sort (it never outrightly says what, but it appears to be some combination of physical and mental therapy) in the army. He's been sent on a month-long leave and he's come home to the bay. His sister is Ellie, who along with her brother, is a healer. In fact, their whole family appear to be healers. Their family have lived in the little town in the bay for hundreds of years. Our 3rd member of the trio is Thea. Ellie and Thea met on the train to Uni, quickly became friends and roommates. Thea also grew up in the bay, albeit a few miles away. Her family also has a long history in the bay. She came into her witch powers while at uni, which was a surprise to her.

Now, don't be thinking that there will be any of the following in this novella:
description
As funny as the witch was in Brave, there's no potion making in a cauldron or talking animals. Thea does have a close relationship with the dog, Murphy, who belongs to her brother, Adam. He is away most of the time, so Murph gets to spend a lot of time with Thea, but he doesn't talk or communicate telepathically.

One could say that when Marc and Thea meet, there's a bit of insta-love that occurs. Indeed, there is a, instant feeling of connection, a feeling of familiarity between the two before they are ever formally introduced, but they're both confused about it, as they're positive they've never met each other before. As the story goes on, they do end up a couple, which was to be expected. However, what pops up from the past, was not.

Overall, it was a good story. I agree with other reviews that it was too short for real character development to occur. And that everyone's magic (whether of the healer or witch variety) was never really explained. It would have been nice to have some background explanation on all of it and how truly commonplace or not it is in the world. One gets the sense that not everyone is aware of magic, but Thea, Marc, and Ellie aren't actively going about making sure no one can ever see it or are afraid of someone catching them practice.

The setting was fantastic, as was the description of everything. I had no problems settling into the story, and was quickly drawn into that quaint English bay town that has to mind the tides. However, the ending did end up feeling a titch rushed. Throughout most of the story, Thea and Marc alternate the POV. It abruptly stopped at the end, so it made it feel odd. I do think that there could have been more added to the story that would not have taken away from it all. There was certainly room for it.

I give this novella 3 of 5 stars. It was too short for my liking, but a good story nonetheless. I'm interested to see what happens next. Especially between Ellie and Adam.

My rating system is as follows:
1 star - Horrible
2 stars - Bad
3 stars - Decent
4 stars - Good
5 stars - Amazeballs!!!

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book from the publisher/author through Netgalley for an unbiased review. Just like you, I rely on reviews from readers when trying to choose my next read. I won't bump ratings or falsely recommend a book.

This was a quick, easy-read romance with a touch of the paranormal. If you like to read a short novella this might be for you, especially if you love a sea side setting that’s atmospheric. The romantic relationship between Marc and Thea progresses smoothly and predictably and I feel able to guess at who might be in for a new relationship in the coming books. Because the story is very short, I felt that Marc’s initial personal issues weren’t fully explained, and neither was his ‘extra’ ability developed, though he’s a lovely character: similarly, with Thea. Maybe there will be more of the witchery in the next books which I personally hope will be longer reads. The question now is who will be featured in Book 2?

Thunder Moon, Joanne Mallory

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:  Sci Fi & Fantasy, General Fiction (Adult)

Reading ARCs means that often there’s little information available – and when choosing this I didn’t know this was a novella, just 100 pages, 1970 kindle locations. Novellas rarely work for me as they just don’t let me get to know the characters or plots in any detail and that's what happened here.

Its a good story, part romance, part looking back to times past, part supernatural.
Its just that I never really felt I knew the characters more than just superficially. There just wasn’t the space – it works for many readers and that's great, but I want the nitty gritty, want to feel all the emotions, wallow in sadness when things are wrong, fill my heart with joy when things go right and in such a short read I can’t.

Its a good mix of people, a fun story, once I understood what was happening.
The beginning had me floundering a little as compressing a story into a novella means details are short, and I wasn’t always quite sure what was going on. It comes clearer though and turns into a pleasant light fantasy romance.
It was an OK read but just a bit on the short and light side for me.

Stars: Two and a half, an OK read that I’d have enjoyed more of it was longer.

Thunder Moon is the first book in the Langston Bay Trilogy by Joanne Mallory. Thea Lavelle is a hereditary witch whose gift came late. But when she meets Marc, her best friend’s brother, she realizes their souls have crossed paths before. Devastated by the loss of a patient, grief and guilt have left Marc burnt out, and he knows the best thing for him is to head home and recover. But as they are inexplicably drawn together, it soon becomes clear that fate is at work. Are they strong enough to confront their unknown past, and still build a future together?

Thunder Moon is a witchy contemporary romance. I liked the setting and the friendship between Thea and Ellie. I like all of the characters, and found Thea, Ellie, and Marc to be well developed and complicated. However, I think the majority of the relationship development was more assumed or an after thought than actually part of the story. Even the big resolution at the end seemed a little flat. I felt invested in everyone's wellbeing, but not in the developing romance. I am hoping this is at least partly because of the amount of history and character set up that needed to be laid for the trilogy. To be honest, I am more interested in Ellie and Thea's brother, and the larger story line after reading this book than the happy ever after promised to Thea and Marc.

Thunder Moon is a fast read, and entertaining. However, I felt like it was light on relationship development and the world and story building seemed a little flat. I enjoyed it, but it did not wow me of leave me eager for the next installment. I might pick up the next book to see if it improves but I will not be searching it out.

*I got this book in a giveaway*

A charming little book, "Thunder Moon" has a great start, a solid ending, but a middling middle that stops it from being great.

The beginning is really cool. We get to know Thea and her friend Ellie, and also Ellie's brother Adam. Mallory does a great job in introducing the three characters, making them easy to relate to, and to make the reader care about them. The writing style is fresh and with a nice pace the story flows easily, and our author has a knack to describe characters and actions without overblown-ing things.

After getting this nice introduction, where we also get to know about their magical powers (something Mallory plays in understated manner, in a very smart move), we get them eating together and the novel loses a little bit of its focus. From the introduction we jump into food and love and here is one of those cases where instead of less, more would have been welcomed. Sometimes it feels as if a chapter or two have been left in the cutting room and too much editing has trimmed the novel of more action and plot development. Luckily for us, the third part wraps things up in a nice manner, but it still can't shake the feeling that things have been rushed a little bit.

Nevertheless, "Thunder Moon" introduces some quite cool characters and an interesting world, one that offers many options to explore in the future. With the writing already there, I would recommend more plot for the next adventure.

Joanne has written a beautiful love story. I enjoyed being a witness of the coming together of Thea and Marc and the close friendship between Thea and Ellie. Joanne did a great job at making me fall in love and feel connected to all the characters.

The magical elements made me love the story even more. It made the characters human and normal without being boring. Thea, Marc and Ellie are interesting and I would love to meet them.

The only aspect I was struggling with was the description of the location. I don't know if it's because I am not acquainted with the area or if it is a matter of English not being my native language, but the holographic image of the town or streets that have to effortlessly rise up when I am reading a novel wasn't there. I know it has to be a beautiful place but I just couldn't envision it by just reading the novel.

But I love Thea and her family (and Ellie and her family, of course) so much that I could put up with it and just focus on them. And am definitely reading Hunter Moon.

I want to know this amazing family better.

This is book one in the Langston Bay Trilogy and does a good job of introducing all the major characters and painting the setting as an ideal island perfect for the magic the characters possess. The book is realitively short but the love story is hot and heavy. Thea is a witch who is just learning to use her magic with the help of her friend and neighbor. Marc returns to the island after losing a friend and patient to suicide to heal himself and decide his future. The magic aspect isn't overused and seems very plausible.

This was an ARC from Netgalley.

The book was a nice break from some of the hot and heavy paranormal romance books. It was a quick read and didn't have a huge mystery to figure out. Two people meeting and having a connection, which leads to romance. The paranormal aspect could have had more of a role in the novel but otherwise I was satisfied with everything. I'm interested to see where the series travels from here.

A short, easy read with likeable characters and a touch of the paranormal. I was surprised by the shortness of the book and wasn't ready for it to end. Thankfully, this is a series so I'm looking forward to the next instalment of Thea and Marc and what their relationship brings. I feel there is more to Marc's story and there are hints of other relationships brewing.
A good, strong start but please don't leave it too long for the next (longer) instalment.

I was immediately drawn into this book by the beautiful settings so expertly portrayed, as well by the fully rounded characters. There are witches about and soul-mates' paths cross. I think there's something for everyone who enjoys romance, mystery and a touch of supernatural in their reads. Thoroughly recommend it and I look forward to reading the other books in the trilogy.

Has potential but not there yet

This feels like a first draft. Lots of spelling and grammar mistakes. Loads of plot holes and unfinished storylines. With work, this could be a good cosy read, but as it stands now, it's lacking. I hope the author does a re-write and pays for an editor.

Thunder moon is a good and easy read, so good that I had to read it in once sitting. The timeline in the book didn't feel smooth but apart from that. The characters and the setting are really interesting, it was good getting to know everyone in the first half of the book, but really I loved it when the story started to go to that magick place. The Ideas in this book are really awesome almost Paula Brackston-y so it will be cool to see where the story leads us all in the next few books.

Since this is the debut of Joanne Mallory, I tend to give her the benefit of the doubt. Thunder Moon is a promising story, but I kind of felt hungry afterwards. It's like going to a fast food restaurant, seeing al those wonderful pictures of gigantic hamburgers, and after receiving your little package, you are still wondering whether that hamburger of the picture and the little thing in your box bear even a small hint of resemblance.

Back to the story of Thea and Marc. The ingredients are there, a troubled soldier and a lovely witch, both drawn to each other by an invisible force. The picture being drawn is very promising, with Marc coming home after an incident with a patient in the army. Traumatized, confused and in need of care. And drool worthy. (Getting the picture, already?) And then there is Thea, with her dog Murphy. Thea is a witch, drawing her powers from the elements (water, fire, earth and wind), or more precisely: the elements are reacting to her emotions and feelings. She and her dog Murphy have a special relationship. It's not very clear whether they can communicate by telepathy or something, but Murphy is more than your regular dog.

So we have an instant attraction, sparks flying everywhere, secrets, magic and emotions all over the place. Then why is this story not fulfilling? Well, for one, the story is very short. So Joanne has little time to give the characters enough depth and history. Secondly, the healer powers of Marc and the witchy part of Thea are part of the story, but they are only a sort of snack-on-the-side (to keep into food analogies). It's like you order a big juicy steak and you have a small bowl with vegetables on the side: who needs green if you have a big steak on your plate? In potential Joanne could have done much more with this aspect. But maybe she's saving for part two and three.

And thirdly, when the pace of the story (finallly) picks up, it kind of ends very rapidly. So yeah, in the end we finally understand the background of the invisible forces at work. But that's it? Again: it's like you ordered a cheeseburger and you find out half way through your burger, that they forgot the cheese.

But enough with the negativity, because in the end: although the fast food is leaving you feeling somewhat dissatisfied and hungry, you still go back next time. So yeah, I'll be waiting for the second and third part of this trilogy to come out and satisfy my cravings.

Three out of five stars for Thunder Moon, with a thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

First off, let me admit that I totally judge books by their cover. And when I saw this cover, I swooned a little bit. It drew me in, and convinced me that this story about a witch discovering her gifts would be a magical treat. This will be author Mallory's debut novel, not due to be released until January 2017.

I really enjoy Mallory's description of the novel's setting: a beach village where the locals all know each other. I can feel the sunny breezes, and the salt of the rising tides. I assume the story takes place in England, judging by the author's vernacular. And though the town of Portsmouth is mentioned several times, a bit more detail on the location would probably be helpful to the average American reader.

Mallory's detailed depiction of the area's scenic nature lends itself to the magical plot. Thea draws her power from the area, and frequents a copse of trees where the spirits speak to her. Now, I am absolutely no stranger to magical fantasy novels. I was, however, taken aback at how REAL the magic in this story was made out to be. I am a bit uncomfortable with how commonplace and natural the characters' magic blends into the real world. Thea never has to struggle to hide or explain her powers to non-gifted people, which I thought was a missed opportunity for dramatic development. She is still learning what she can do, but there is nothing incredulous in her experience. She just seems to accept it far too smoothly and easily.

My main criticism of the novel is the length. At 145 pages, it doesn't allow for adequate character development and growth. I really enjoy Thea, Ellie, and Marc. I feel like we became fast friends in a short time. However, I wanted to know more about their background. I wanted them to have to struggle through a few more obstacles before we reached a happy ending. And, to be honest, I wanted more fantasy. Too much of the book felt like regular old adult fiction, in a lovely beach setting, with some erotic love scenes thrown in for good measure.

Aside from these few gripes, and a few editing errors, I enjoyed Mallory's writing style. I hope to see her grow as an author in the future.

Marc is a therapist in the army who has been sent on a month long leave when a patient he had been treating a patient- Patrick- had committed suicide. Marc had thought Patrick was doing good then Patrick commits suicide and Marc is messed up over this young man’s death. Marc is a little burned out and had some thoughts of leaving the military for a couple of months. Marc had thought the army would be his career but wasn’t so sure now. Maybe after ten years in the army it was time for Marc to get out and start somewhere else. Marc and his sister ell are healers. Marc knew the minute Elle seen him she would know something was very wrong. Elle did know it and it worried her and their mother who had picked up on something in a ten word text also knew and was worried. Thea and Elle had met on a train to the university and quickly became friends and roommates. The also both grew up in the bay a couple of miles apart. Then Thea came into her witch powers while attending the university and it was unexpected to say the least. Thea is still learning what her magic can do and she gets her power from the elements. Thea also goes to a copse of trees where the spirits speak to her. Then Marc and Thea meet and their is an instant connection - they even felt familiar to the other when they had never met before. Thea has her brother’s dog most of the time as her brother is away a lot. The dog and Thea seem to have a special relationship.
This would have been a great story if it had just been longer. I would have liked to know more about Marc, Elle’s and Thea’s background and powers. I think that it actually turned more to the romance of Thea and Marc or instas/ lust or love whatever you want to call it. I also believe this story should have had more supernatural elements to it connecting the powers that the three main characters had. But it was a fast read, as I said to fast for me actually but that is my opinion.I was disappointed in this story.

2.5 Stars Got ARC from Net Galley.

I have to admit I was a bit disappointed with this book because it wasn't quite what I thought it would be. I thought it would be more witchy instead of witchy and more realistic. That annoyed me a little but I did finish reading this book despite the tiny font which will annoy people unless it was just in the ARC.

Things didn't really start going witchy and getting somewhat interesting until nearly the end of the book. I don't think I'll continue on with the series or maybe I will at some later point but at this time I'm just not meshing with the story since I seem to be in the wrong frame of mind. This is the first book in a series which could explain why it dragged a bit but it wasn't until a bit over 90 or maybe 92% in that things happened.

It could have worked as just a regular contemporary romance. I'll admit that it does have an interesting twist on instalove. It isn't a bad book. I'm sure if I went in without thinking about how it should be I would have enjoyed it more. I was just kind of expecting more fantasy than reality when it comes to witchcraft. I did like the characters and I love Thea's relationship with her brother's dog. It could have been fleshed out a bit more. Even though I was a bit disappointed I applaud Joanne for her debut novel since that's always an awesome accomplishment.

Some people can't resist a book with Moon, Witches or Thunder in the title or description. Include a very captivating, mysterious cover and I'm hooked.

I am not really sure what exactly to be expected of this book. Surely more witchy thingies and people? But I didn't expect what is to come. The story was a little slow for me.. I expected love story, yeah, but more magic and witchy things. Marc came from a family of a healer.. so there's a witch, and a healer, imagine that power.

To be honest, I came to a point where I am just dragging myself to read, because it got boring. no magic no action...

I want to see more magic and action on the second book.. I find Thea a little childish? I mean can't she feel the magic? she's a witch.. if because of magic why he find Marc interesting maybe she can feel it right? A witch and a healer.... hmm... I wonder what will happen next..

Are Thea's siblings witch and wizard too? I am not sure, but hopefully I can find it out on the second book.

This was a really lovely, short, paranormal romance read. As the start of a series, it sets things up just right.

Thea knows that things are about to change, but she can't be sure exactly how until she waves to a stranger on the beach. That stranger, it turns out, is her BFF's brother, on leave from his job for some tragic reasons. There is an instant connection and some extreme sizzle that shows up right away. In the beginning, the magic is almost secondary to the fated romance they begin to experience. There's an inkling that something else is at play, but since both of them are magic in one way or another, it doesn't really change things.

Everything comes to a head when their fates and past lives become clear. They are both forced to make some hard choices and see where things end up. I really enjoyed both characters and the quirky nature of their small town. At the quick pace that the story revealed itself, it was definitely worth the afternoon it took to read.

Like others I have to admit to being slightly disappointed - I was expecting a lot more magical elements to the story... as the blurb implies Thea is a witch who is just learning her skills and you would think there would be more entertaining mishaps in the story.

I think that this story had potential to be great but it just didn't reach it... I don't know whether that this is because it is a debut or if it is because it is a short story. It didn't really seem to get going before it was all finished.

This was a quick and easy read - it was good but lacking the witch-y element I was expecting
