The Veil Diaries #4

Whispers From The Dead

Rate this book
Hi, I’m Alexis Delaney. I’m your average 17-year-old girl. Except I can see the dead. And talk to the dead and help them move on. So… okay, I’m not your average 17-year-old girl. The Veil is still shut. Which means the dead can’t move on, not on their own. Through my Link to the Veil, I’ve been able to start helping souls to cross. The Veil is changing, healing. Like I am.
Since I came home from the hospital, I’ve been hiding behind my best friends. That’s about to change. I want my life back. I’m ready to get back to normal. Then Sophie, the twins’ little sister, tells me she’s ready to cross over. Ethan pulled her back, and now it was time to face it. I have to tell Ethan and Isaac their sister’s soul is in their house. What the hell am I going to say?

B.L.Brunnemer has been a devoted reader since she was young. As a child, she was instantly attracted to horror stories. The plot, the suspense, the action. She loved it all. Which, as she grew, branched out into several other genres. But a strong female character always caught her eye. Through the years romance became a big part of her reading. Then she found the Young Adult/New Adult genre. But she had a problem. She never found the romance between most characters to be realistic enough for her. At least in the paranormal romance section.

So, she decided to fix that. She'd been writing for years already and had always struggled to finish a manuscript. Until, she decided to write what she wanted to read.

B.L. Brunnemer doesn't have any other publications at this time. She's just a woman, who loves a good story with great characters. And she hopes you'll love them too.

This is when a time machine would come in handy. Jump a couple years in the future get all the books downloaded and then pop back to present time with the whole series. BOOM! Instant happiness 😁.

Is anyone else not surprised that this book is amazing? B. L. Brunnemer has done it again with this next installment in her Veil Diaries series. I absolutely adored the chapters with Rory and the guys’ point of views though I was disappointed that this book was waaaayyy shorter than the others. I guess all I have left to say is....when is the next book coming out??? Brunnemer’s made me an addict of her series and let me tell you this-I don’t mind one single bit;)

Update: 10/26:
It's going to be here tomorrow...nothing could ever prepare me for this

Update: 10/21:
A COVER! And it’s absolutely gorgeous

Update: 10/19:
OH MY LORD WE HAVE A DATE!!! Whispers of the Dead will be here October 27!!! I would say it’s so soon but I need my Lexie fix nooooww;)

Update: 10/8:
So apparently Whispers of the Dead is book 3.5 instead of 4...can we just have a moment of silence for the loss of another full length novel in the series?

Update: 9/30:
Ladies an Gentlemen, we have a title! Whispers of the Dead will be the fourth book in this fabulous series by B.L. Brunnemer:)

I needed this yesterday! Hopefully there will be a release date soon!

I liked this one less than the previous book. The thing is, nothing really happened. This felt like a complete filler. At least it worked to get Ethan and Isaac more involved, I guess. What I really loved was Miles and any pages concerning him.
So that's enough rambling. It's 3 am and I'm tired as heck.

Makes the ghosts go away

I truly enjoyed this series so far and to find out its a 15 book series...I was in love! The series is said to end with high school and will continue after into a new series! I can't wait! I have found another writer to adore!

Ok now my review because this series sure as hell deserves one! I love each and every book cover in this series so far! I have only read books 1-4.

I love Ethan,Issac, Miles, Asher, Zeke and Lexie! The characters feel like they are already family. I love each the scenes, thw atmosphere and the fun thw characters have. I also love that Lexie says whats on her mind with no regrets. I think that's what keeps me so interested in her character. And the fact that well hey if a book can make me laugh bout loud I'm all in!

This is my new favorite author and I can't wait to see what happens next in this series! I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good love story in a nontraditional sense. Who seeks out ghosts and requires a minimum of every page to make you laugh or cry!

Il libro mi è piaciuto di nuovo tantissimo e sono innamorata cotta di tutti e 5 i ragazzi. NON SO SCEGLIERE HELP
Lettura originale:
VABBÈ DOV'È IL QUINTO LIBRO? DOVE?! This is a really amazing book. I couldn't put it down.
Why are B. L.'s book always so short 😉? I am looking forward to get the next book. How will the relationship between Lexi and her boys develop. How will her necromancer abilities grow. How and when will the characters of the two series (Books of stone and The Veil Diaries) meet in person?
B.L. did it again, she is an amazing author. Good luck with writing the next installment.

What’s up guys? It’s me again, here to rain on everyone’s Veil Diaries parade. Or maybe just drizzle this time? Because this book wasn’t as bad as book two or three, so I’m going to try to lighten up a bit.

Don’t get me wrong, this is still going to be mostly negative, but I do have some positives to say. But we’ll save those so that this review ends on a happier note.

I feel like a broken record with my complaints for this series.

❌ Lexie is a damsel that masquerades as a badass. She’s obviously gone through some trauma so I cut her a bit more of a break this book, and it wasn’t as bad as book two or three. But the trouble that she gets into is so predictable. If she gets left alone at all she is accosted by an aggressive male, an overly flirty male, or a ghost without fail. It’s gotten to the point that I cringe every time she’s left alone because I can literally feel it coming. And for once I’d like her to handle the situation competently and without the guys finding out and overreacting.

❌ Zeke. He gets his own bullet point because he is awful. He uses past trauma to make everything about him, and I’m tired of it. We have to take a break during every scene with a flirty guy, an overbearing guy, a ghost, Lexie risking herself – literally every scene – to give Zeke time for his freak out. As a reader, my focus is always being taken away from the action so that I can read about how everyone has to calm Zeke down or keep him away from someone so he doesn’t attack them. His overprotectiveness doesn’t just border on psychotic, it is psychotic. And controlling. Scowling and being angry and protective all the time isn’t a personality – they’re a set of characteristics and actions that have been blown comically out of proportion. And it honestly reaches peak ridiculousness when he can’t even wait for a dangerous or emotional situation to be over before yelling at Lexie. He frequently overlooks what Lexie wants in favor of what he thinks is best for her, and I don’t think I’ve ever hated a romantic interest more.

❌ You’ve all seen what I’ve had to say about the sexism in this novel, so I’ll keep this one short. Just, can we stop with the unrealistically mean and petty female characters? They’re everywhere, and now apparently even the female teachers are malicious and spiteful for no real reason. But not the male teachers. They are super cool. And so are all of the other males in this series, barring a select few that are there to harass Lexie. Please give us female characters that we deserve. Tara’s characterization doesn’t even make sense at this point. It’s like the author made a roulette wheel of emotions, with 80% being mean or spiteful and the remaining being nice, normal emotions, and for any given situation with Tara in it she spins the wheel and that’s how Tara reacts. It’s giving me whiplash.

❌ The supernatural aspect of this series, AKA the thing I’m giving up on. It’s still entirely uninspired and confusing, though less so this time than previously in the series. My complaint with this one is mostly how much Lexie just refuses to look into the supernatural. During her conversation with Serena she literally manages to ignore every piece of supernatural information that she’s given. Witches exist and police other supernatural creatures? Lexie doesn’t give a fuck. She has the power to raise the dead and many other unknown abilities? Who cares? Certainly not Lexie. Somehow, the author managed to make a scene with a ton of information practically useless and entirely bland and emotionless.

At this point a random stranger off the street could walk up to Lexie and tell her that they’re a fucking unicorn and that they shit glitter and Lexie’s only concern would be that they’re talking to her. She has no interest in doing anything other than slowly and monotonously helping ghosts pass on. We have no end game, no plan to fix the damage to the Veil or find out who’s doing it. And when one of the guys used Google to successfully identify a previously unknown supernatural creature within seconds I couldn’t even speak. The lack of creativity that went into designing the supernatural world in this novel leaves me flabbergasted.

❌ I would have been able to tolerate the uninspired supernatural aspect of the story if we had actually gotten some romance at this point. This isn’t a slow burn, it’s a no burn. This is book four of a reverse harem, and the amount of romance that I’ve read is so pitiful that it’s painful. And I know I’m not the only one suffering here. In book three over 100 people highlighted a scene where one of the guys rubs a finger across Lexie’s shoulder blade absentmindedly. The depths that we’ve descended to in order to find romance with this novel is kind of sad.

Now on to the promised positives.

✔ I enjoyed reading from multiple POVs this book. The guys brought a fresh perspective to the novel that I really needed and gave a bit of a break from Lexie’s POV. It’s always nice to look at the plot from a different angle, and most of the romance in this novel is packed into their chapters, so another bonus there.

✔ Editing errors were much less of an issue in this book than the last two. And the book was a much more appropriate length for the amount of plot it contained. So while the pacing was still a little off, it was much more coherent and dragged much less. I also appreciated the less frequent descriptions of Lexie’s wardrobe. Still there, but so much more reasonable.

✔ I am going to give a bit of acknowledgement regarding the supernatural aspect of this story. I am still so far from satisfied, as evidenced above, but there was more development with Lexie’s powers than in the other three books combined. Yay progress.

I’m eventually going to read book five, but I think I need a break from this series for a little while. I want a more fulfilling romance and supernatural plot right now, and I don’t expect book five to deliver on either front.

So no, I still don’t recommend this series. At this point even if book five shows dramatic improvement I still wouldn’t recommend it. That’s a lot to go through to get to something good. But at this point it’s a sunk cost to me, so onward we go.

Short filler book

This one was shorter and was more focused on Lexie overcoming her PTSD. Some veil stuff but mostly HS relationships and such.

At least the guys are all rocks and will drop anything to go help her.

4⭐️ this series is literally addicting af😭 im so sat for each book. Like, how the plot thickens, the romance builds, and tbh, i didn’t know what to expect after book 3’s ending.. but also the lake scenes? I swear the ghosts be DOING TOOOOO MUCH, but Lexie? A baddie!! I also love how each guys is slowly but surely falling for Lexie and realizing it! Idk I’m obsessed with the series… as i said.. it’s becoming a comfort series fr!

Reread 3/20******Stayed up till 3 am reading this. Could. Not. Put. It. Down. Holy Fucking shit i love these guys.

Heavy themes here. Heavy ass shit no one wants to happen to them and no one likes to talk about in real life. Themes that made me want to turn away yet i just couldn’t. The darkness these little shits have to endure just makes you love them even more...want to protect them, guide them, see them though to the other side, tell them it’s going to be okay. Give them all a big fucking group hug. And group snuggles. Never ending group snuggles.

Talk about SLOW BURNNNNN. Hands down my new favorite RH series to date, despite it lacking the smex scenes i expected/hope for. This series is just THAT GOOD.

And now here i am at 7 am ready to start the next book. Clearly i have a problem. Actually, i have 6 problems: Zeke, Miles, Asher, Isaac, Ethan, and Lexi.

It was OK

Plenty of PTSD, pouting, posturing and other lame behaviors with very little advancement of the story line. One kiss in murky circumstances not acknowledged by either party. The girl annoyed the heck out of me by being winy sissy without an iota of personal courage in terms of acknowledging her feelings. Lame.

Lexie is still recovering from her ordeal back in January when she was kidnapped and almost sexually assaulted. Despite being a very strong character in the past, she is now shaken emotionally and can barely go anywhere without one of the guys or her massive dog to help with her anxiety. Most of this book is her working through that.

Sometimes it is a little jolting to return to a series like this with such a slow burn, but I love it. We are still in that "admitting feelings to oneself but not out loud" stage as one by one the guys are starting to see Lexie as more than just a cool friend. I'm totally hooked despite the slowness. The lack of non-romantic plot development is an issue. We still don't have a clue who is responsible for the veil being broken and previous characters that I suspected might involved were not part of this book, so....I think I'm ready for something to happen there. I'm going to read another and I'm cautiously optimistic that the plot will move forward more than it has the last two books.

In this installment, we follow Lexie as the tries to get over last book's events, while getting way more chapters from the guys point of view and how their feelings evolve (which I greatly appreciated). We also deep dive into the twin's traumatic past and get to know them better.

Ghosts are more present (yay !), as we begin to have information about the power structure in the magical field. Lexie's powers continue to evolve as she gets stronger and develops new ability.

I still see the editing problems, mispellings and weird punctuation, but truthfully I'm starting to get used to it by this point... Even though they still prevent me from rating this book 5 stars. Well, that, and the fact that sometimes the secondary chatacters act so meanly toward our heroin that it's just a tad too much to be credible. Some scenes feel like "And then, he/she says a mean thing to hurt Lexie. Why ? Because."

The full 4 stars this time!

Yes, I was wary going into this one. After what happened in Book 3 (which I won't tell), I was worried about Lexie. Don't worry... Hang on... That's all I can say about that.

This one has more meat. More progress than I expected. And, once I finished it, I wanted to read the next one. Like, the waited for my pre-ordered book to show up in my kindle app at midnight kind of want. You know, the BEST kind of want.

You know a book is good when you read Book 1 to 4 in the span of 3 days!!!

- In this book Lexi is still recovering to the trama that happen in the last book.
- The boys are all wonderful as always, and she starts developing feelings for almost everyone.
-I liked how we got to see Issac and Ethan's story
-Again I really loved the POV from the guys.

I can't wait until book 5!!!!! I wonder how many books she plans to have in this series.
It would be interesting what becomes of Lexi once she graduates college and all the guys go their seperate ways. And, seeing which guy she decides to pick.

3-3.5 stars.. For some reason Goodreads is having an issue and not letting me click the rating so I'll have to try to remember to come back and do that. Honestly, I don't even know with this series anymore.. when there is just so much angst for so freaking many books eventually you just get kind of meh about it. I'm not even sure if I want anything to happen with Lexie and the guys anymore. I'm so over it and so mad at myself that I don't want to give up this series. Its ridiculous! Yes this is the slowest burn RH that I have EVER read.. Its so slow that I'm not even sure if its moving.. that slow. Ok so I am over exaggeration a tiny bit in my irritation but whatever!

Good News: This plot line is finally starting to really progress as Lexie finds out more of what her gifts mean as well as more about her powers and how to control them. There is even more back biting from the jealous wenches in Lexie's world as well as some possible new threats on the horizon. Lexie is really coming around after the events of the last book and learning to slowly deal with her trauma and PTSD.

I'll just be honest.. I feel like now I'm in it for the long haul and I'll be continuing the story.. but.. I'm still irritated about this slow burn crap! JS lol.

Everything sucks

Trauma sucks. Triggers suck. Not communicating well sucks. Ghosts suck. Grief sucks. Adults on a power trip suck. Jealous high school girls suck. High school, in general, sucks. Having crushes on your friends sucks. Just everything sucks, okay? Except for Hades the dog. He's cool. 💙

3.5, as this felt like filler, although necessary filler. I am impressed with the way the writer deals with the trauma Lexie and the others are facing. It feels realistic and isn't over-sensationalised like it often can be in books.

Whispers From The Dead is book 3.5/4. We pick up alittle time from where When to Fear The Living leaves off. Lexi has been trying to deal with the psychological effects of the attack. She is trying so hard to get her life back on track without fear. But with Zeke, Isaac, Miles, Ethan and Asher there to help guide her when ever they are needed, she is slowly getting her life back. She is also dealing with the dead. They are getting more pushy in their need to cross over. Add in Sophie, the twin's little sister, is ready to crossover. How does she tell the twins that the sister they didn't know was still hanging around is ready move on? With so much happening in Lexi's life, can she find a way to deal or will everything push her over the edge?

I really loved Lexi in When to Fear The Living and Whispers From The Dead. I see her character growing and becoming stronger than ever. Even with so much going on, her strength and wit and loyalty, she is one of my favorite female characters. In WFTD, her relationship's with the guys are slowly developing into other things. A kiss here, a skip of a heartbeat there. I am enjoying this slow build because I know the outcome will be worth it, when it happens. We get to see POV from the guys which was interesting and fun. Zeke, he has his own issues he is trying to work through. Which we get to see. And can Lexi work past her fear of being close to Zeke. We get to see Miles in a little different light. When he does his swim meet, oh the hotness!! The Twins Isaac and Ethan, we learn of their heartache, and I freely admit I shed a tear or two, maybe even three. Asher is such a rock and there for everyone I fell more in love with him. We get to see more of the Veil and Lexi's working with/in it. Overall WFTD was another can't put down read by B.L. and I cannot wait to see what she has next for Lexi and the boys.

I received a free copy for an honest review.

This book was surprisingly short in length, but it wasn't too big of a problem because I had the sequel right at my hand, and it was refreshing especially how "lengthy" each book is in this series was. The story was also so much calmer when put in contrast with the previous book, where things definitely got too eventful with the terrifying stalker and kidnapping experience that Lexie had to go through.

Now, significant things that happened. Ethan and Issac ignored Lexie and the rest of the guys when they found out about the truth regarding Sophie. To be really honest, I never get why people would be so mad for things like this (I'm saying this because I personally wouldn't). Lexie also got dragged down by a psycho ghost (thankfully not too much happened), but it did lead to Lexie and Zeke finally having a moment (so to all Lexie and Zeke shippers out there...congrats).

I think it was a great decision to have a "break" in this book, a chance of recovery for all the crap that the characters - especially Lexie - had to go through. The book feels very grounded because of how it focused on the recovery process from a very traumatic memory. In other words, in this book, we're more focusing on how Lexie "recovers" than "grows".

Would I call this book a filler? No. I just think that this book was less.traumatic and stressful to read, but that doesn't make it useless to the series storyline. Anyway, I guess that's all I really have to say about this book.

This book was way shorter than the others (not that I minded), but it felt like a whole lot of filler. I know we need her to heal and deal with her trauma, but it felt really repetitive at times and that nothing much happens. If the series had been edited more or slightly better planned, I think the plot and the characters would be stronger.

On the bright side, there wasn’t a lot of constant laughing or chuckling from everything Lexie said, and she didn’t use her sweet or cutesy voice constantly. She actually dealt with her trauma in a realistic way, which was refreshing for a lot of the books I’ve read.

The constant mention of each boys smell when they’re near her is a little irritating. Like I get it, Miles smells like wintergreen and Asher smells like vanilla and cinnamon and so on, it doesn’t need to be mentioned practically every time they’re near. I also really wish that this author had a better way of giving us the physical descriptions of people and places rather than the same things in every book. I get that you want to refresh our minds from previous books, but there are subtler and stronger ways to mention it that’s not super repetitive.

Moving on to book five now, which I heard is where the relationships (finally) develop, so fingers crossed they actually do.
