The Lifestyle Business Owner reveals how ordinary people can buy a small business in their community, earn a six-figure income, and make the business run without them. Aaron Muller, founder of Lifestyle Business Owner Academy, reveals the 3-step formula he utilized to go from a kid who didn't attend college to the owner of eight companies that run without him. Now it’s your turn to discover the secrets to owning a business that gives you the financial freedom, lifestyle, and contribution you desire.
How to get into the business of being an entrepreneur, if you so wish.
Sorry if the title seems redundant or confusing, but I was just making a point about how if I *had to* name a fault, I'd say that this book is often times a bit repetitive. Sometimes I felt like the author was just going on and on about a certain point or example instead of just telling me whatever the bottomline was and moving on. But as in my real life, it's just that once I feel I've understood the point, I want to move on to the next part. Impatience is an ugly beast at times and as such that's why I put my one “negative” first. I do appreciate that not everyone is like me and some people will probably rave about how the same example I found exasperating brought them to enlightenment. I'll admit some actually did so for me too.
However, if that doesn't sound sane to you, then I'll ground it back to a “review” by saying that this book is an informative read about how to become a Lifestyle Business Owner (LBO). As such, it takes you by the hand from the beginnings of even if being a LBO is right for you to the “end” of how to manage your running business.
The whole concept of was extremely interesting and though it sounds like commonsense it was really good to see it all together spelled out in black and white. I really liked how the book was structured and one topic naturally flowed to the other in a completely related and logical manner. Ever step is mapped out and explained well.
That said, and as much as it does have a business connotation to it. I was pleasantly surprised by how much of the “business advice” can be just “life advice”. For example, in the chapter about how LBO's think, there's a principle called systemized assumption questioning which in essence, is to not make assumptions. You'd think that's just commonsense, but the way it's put was eye opening, at least to me. It had me reflecting on what an assumption is and how very true to life it is to always question whether in *any situation* one is being applied or not and why.
This book also surprised me with how it went above and beyond and addressed some common fears, misconceptions and myths. It clearly knocks down any 'if's or but's' you might have put in your own way if becoming a LBO is what you want to do.
Overall I found the book to be very informative and well written out. At every turn the topics are well explained and exemplified, leaving little room for doubt. Though I myself don't have any desire to buy a business it's so well written, to my own shock I found I was almost on the verge of signing up to getting on the LBO train.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever thought about becoming an entrepreneur or at least some curiosity on the subject matter. However, bear in mind that this isn't a blueprint to success, it's just the foundation, or an example, if you will. The author himself says so in his “note to readers” at the very beginning of the book. As long as you keep in mind that this book doesn't guarantee your success if you follow it, then I definitely think it's a great informative read, as long as you're interested in the LBO, otherwise it will likely be boring. Life lessons and all.
I want to preface this by saying I’m not a business or financial expert by any stretch of the imagination.
I have worked for 20 years at a small business and seen pretty much every side of that business. I also work at a university with an entrepreneurial major that is incredibly popular. I can certainly see the appeal of owning your own business.
Generally my rule in dealing with almost anything is if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. This book promises to teach you how to buy a business, put a year into it building it up, and then withdraw to work 5-10 hours per week while making $100,000 or more per year.
To me it really sounds too good to be true.
As I said I do work for a university so I am a big proponent of higher education. The author proudly states several times that he took no classes beyond high school which does not necessarily fill me with confidence. I would also say that the author, who is a business broker, strongly pushes the idea that anyone buying a business needs a broker. In fact that is the very first thing the author suggests in the chapter about additional resources. My other criticism is that it does seem to contradict itself in a few places, such as the suggestion that you must be deeply invested and interested in the business and also more than willing to give it up if it is not profitable.
That said I don’t think it would hurt anyone that is considering investing in a business to read this book. There is a wealth of advice in this book, especially in looking at financials and choosing the correct business. Since I’m not an expert I’m not qualified to tell you how useful this information is, but at a glance it seemed useful to me.
Since they offer the promise of working only five hours per week as a business owner the book also gives advice on hiring a manager to handle the day-to-day work after a year or more building the business.
So if you have large amount of money to invest (something else the author strongly encourages) and are looking to buy a business I think this book could have some good advice for you. I’m a little skeptical that it will have you working ten hours per week and making $200,000/year.
If I had never read a book on any of these topics before, I think this review would be more generous, but having read a bunch of books on several of the topics this author covers, I found the book to be too shallow. The author covers buying a business, making it more profitable, and how to set yourself up to be a lifestyle business owner in about 250 pages. Muller provides multiple frameworks for how to do these and I will have some takeaways, but overall, I view this book as more of a jumping off point than a book that teaches you enough to run and do everything the author writes about.
Do I believe what the author is selling can be done? Yes, absolutely, but with everything in the pages, I am not quite sure someone would believe it, due to the thin substance of the book. I can think of multiple books I would recommend before I would recommend this book to someone. The Lifestyle Investor by Justin Donald for incorporating the mindset of a lifestyle business owner. Buy Then Build by Walker Deibel for how to execute buying and building a business. Financial Intelligence by Karen Berman for understanding what the numbers really mean.
Overall, I believe this is not the best work of what the author could produce and comes across more of a big lead magnet to get you into part of his business broker business and additional offerings, which I believe included some mastermind, training workshops, and more. Upon trying to find those offerings, I came across multiple defunct websites. There are a couple YouTube channels, both with fewer than 300 subscribers and no new videos in four years. The Instagram account hasn’t posted in over a year. The author doesn’t appear capable of running a successful lifestyle business if he can’t be bothered to keep the webpages active. This get’s a 3/5 from me, but after seeing the inability to manage web pages and social media accounts, it feels like more of a 2/5.
Aaron Muller is not some random person who achieved moderate success and, considering himself a wunderkind, decided to write a book just because everyone else is doing it. Quite to the contrary. This book is incredibly well-written, with plenty of personal experiences and explanations, in a personable tone, that this is unlike any business-related book I’ve ever read. I’ve never had any interest in having a small business, knowing how much work it is and how I’m predestined to fail, but I’ll admit, this book had me thinking about the possibilities. I never even knew that buying and selling businesses was a thing. I mean, it makes sense that it’s a thing but I just never thought about it. I’ve always just subconsciously thought that having a small business meant starting from scratch. The author advises against just that, which is where the buying and selling of established businesses come in.
Every step to owning a profitable small business, the keys for success, the pitfalls to avoid—these were all laid out in easy to understand terms. It’s also a bit of a self-help book on how to approach your work no matter what, if it doesn’t make you happy, you should do something else. He addresses the hang-ups and worries people have about starting and operating a small business, and the risks involved. He doesn’t sugarcoat it, he just tells you how best to be successful. He wants to help you become a business owner who doesn't just work 5,328 hours a week, trying to keep your business afloat. He wants you to be able to delegate the work, enjoy your success, not be so stressed out that you can't even enjoy any money that you make. After reading this book, I feel like an entrepreneurial spirit, a good broker, and the principles in this book is all you need to have a successful "lifestyle business."
I don’t usually give 5 stars, but this book deserves it. I don’t know, maybe it was what I needed all along. See, as a millennial, I know that we tend to leave our desk jobs to chase our dreams. Well, I’m one of those people who actually did it. And just at the right time, I came across with this book. It became a really good guidance for me and I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one who’s been struggling to get what I want. It gives you hope that you could do it. You don’t have to be well-informed, rich person at a certain age. You could actually do it by being who you are. You just need to play your cards well.
I totally recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a start in business. It doesn’t matter if you’re starting a business from scratch or buying an existing one, Aaron Muller is here for you. Reading the book is like talking to him and you find the answers to the concerns that you might have. Not only he gives you lots of advice but also shares his journey and experience with just for us readers.
I’m at the beginning of the road and reading this book did me a power of good. This is a dream came true situation!
As a small business owner, I found this book quite informative and helpful. I had never heard of a lifestyle business owner before, but the concepts make total sense. Running the business rather than letting it run you is important in my mind because why would anyone want to go from working a normal 40 hour a week job to an 80 hour a week job for less pay.
I was skeptical at first about the author’s advice to buy an existing business especially since I felt that it would be hard to find a company that could fit one’s ideal preferences. However, he convinced me of the soundness of that advice. I hadn’t really thought about how much time, effort, and money is spent just getting the business off the ground. Why go through all that hassle if other opportunities are available to fulfill your plans?!
I enjoyed the fact that the author provided specific examples to reinforce his points and I found this book a great read. I will definitely be referring back to this book as I grow my business and look for other opportunities to expand.
I'm currently a student in my last year of college. I'm trying to determine what to do when I graduate and have always thought it would be great to be a business owner. I don't see myself doing the daily grind behind a cubicle in corporate America. My friend recommended that I read this book and I am so glad I did! The real-life information in the book got me inspired to follow that dream. The author seems so 'real' and not like most how to book a that overwhelm you with concepts and ideas. He lays out the exact step by step process of not only where to find a business to buy, but what makes a good business to purchase and how to value the business. Then he teaches how to build the business, hire the best employees and then how to ultimately get the business to run without the owner working more than 5 hours a week. I must admit some of it was over my head, but I know I can use this book for years as a reference guide and once I am in business it will make a lot more sense to me. Must read!
I never, ever thought I'd be saying that I thoroughly ENJOYED reading a business-related book, but today I managed to surprise myself. As a business major, I've read more than my fair share monotonous, soulless drivel that gives you about as clear a picture as Ikea instructions on what you're supposed to do in order to succeed (or build that Bauhaus coffee table).
Mr. Muller has a conversational, motivational tone, and his book is full of practical and innovative advice, interspersed with a ton of personal stories and experiences that really humanizes what he's telling you.
It was really refreshing to not read a rehashed book detailing how keeping your nose to the grindstone is the only way to succeed unless you come from money or have financial backers falling out of your ears. Do it SMART. This book does a great job of busting some business myths wide open and introducing some new ideas for those with the entrepreneurial spirit looking to make their mark.
I found the book comprehensive and very informative for a person who is and those with the desire to be entrepreneurial in business. Muller provides you with a thorough understanding of the ins and outs of being a business owner and how to be successful in this role. As a person who likes immediate actionable information, I say cheers, I like it. In five sections, broken into approximately four to five of subtopics, the author speaks to us about a new kind of business owner. He addresses everything from soup to nuts, such as how to buy a good business, increase the profits, become a lifestyle business owner, and next steps as such an owner. As an additional bonus, Muller discusses how to take the business to the next level. Although I had no prior familiarity with the author, I'm glad I chose to pick this book up and give it a read. I say kudos to a definite must have for your library if you have such aspirations.
After reading this book, I feel more confident in my abilities to invest in my business. While I did not buy a business, as a small business owner, this book provided a lot of guidance on how to increase profits and better run a more efficient company. I love that this book provided easy to understand basics as well as a thorough explanation of things that were not quite as quick to grasp. It was also neat to see the interactive, self-awareness style approach at the end of each chapter that asked you to think deeply about what you had learned thus far. This allowed me to do more than just read. It gave me an opportunity to really apply the lessons to my actual business, which I appreciated. I don’t think many people give themselves a chance to actively reflect on what they have read and how it applies to their life and these small invitations helped trigger that.
This book taught me a lot about what goes on behind the scenes in the world of business. The author gives step-by-step processes for what you need to do and things that you need to consider in order to be a "lifestyle business owner," meaning a business owner who works minimal hours but still makes enough to live on.
The book lists important components of all areas of running a business, from the team of advisers you need when you're ready to buy a business, to what goes into a smooth operations framework, and what financial concepts you need to familiarize yourself with if you want to succeed. Overall, I found it an informative and enjoyable read. The only reason I subtracted one star is that occasionally the author seemed to be trying to market his own business as well; I found those plugs kind of jarring. Otherwise, it was pretty good.
Aaron Muller claims to be able to tell you exactly how to start or buy and then run a successful business. He says that eventually you will only have to work a few hours a week on your "lifestyle business" and that you can somehow make six figures off of it.
I'm skeptical about his methods but it does seem like he has a lot of business experience, despite not having a formal business education. He has an impressive back story and has clearly learned a lot from his various successes and failures.
Some of the advice gets a little repetitive, and a lot of it is obvious stuff like "don't buy a software company if you don't have a software background and the company relies on the owner to be the main programmer."
Still, I'm sure most of this book would be helpful for someone who has money sitting around that they want to invest!
Aaron Muller did a great job of simplifying what it means to become a lifestyle business owner. This book is just as it advertises on the cover and sticks to the point fairly well. Muller is a bit of an environmentalist which I like and highlighted his journey to becoming the LBO he is today from working at a young age to owning multiple businesses including an eco-friendly truck cleaning company. What he does probably doesn't sound glamorous and he isn't denying it. However, he did find success in something he loves doing and is now giving us his knowledge. I am re-inspired to pursue business after reading this book. I truly want a career path that would allow me to live this way, with freedom and an income to support my desired lifestyle.
The Lifestyle Business Owner is a comprehensive business guide book that covers where to go and how to look for a business to buy or start, how to decide what kind of business is right for you, financially how to buy the business, taking over a business, hiring and management, business financials and realistic business profits, and finally how to be able to step back from running your business and be able to own a profitable and almost self-sufficient business. This book is not a quick read book, take the time to read it, it very detailed and educational with personal examples and stories throughout.
This is such a great book! I am usually unable to understand business talk in the least, and have always been intimidated by jargon and numbers...but this book makes the basic idea of getting your own business started and going so simple to follow! There's still a lot of work to be put in from the reader's side of things, but if you're looking for a helpful guide to get you started, look no further! I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to run an independent business that isn't really sure which foot to start out on.
This isn't my typical read, but I am glad I read it and will be sharing it with my husband. In the pages of this book, there is a lot of practical advice for anyone wanting to become a business owner. Muller clearly has a lot of experience, both positive and negative, that he readily shares throughout the book.
Muller suggests that it is possible to run a business as a "lifestyle business owner" without letting the business take over your life. There are multiple frameworks that he defines and explains that would be quite useful to someone looking for this kind of opportunity.
Informative, Educational, Practical, Useful, and Interesting
I chose this rating because this book was very well written. I liked it because I could relate to the true stories the author told about his personal experiences and those of others he knows. He teaches one how to do something that most people would not feel they are able to do and makes it realistic and plausible. There is a lot of valuable information in this book. I would want to work with him if I wanted my own business. I highly recommend it.
I loved this book and will continue to back and refer to it. Aaron Muller lays out how to build your business and earn from it so you are not sinking time and money in without making a profit. Whether you are a new entrepreneur or an experienced business person who needs a new perspective to reach the next level, there is advice here that will benefit you.Well worth the time to read and refer back to.
This book describes a straightforward method to own a business - not start a business. It is a rather novel idea since most people tend to think about starting their own venture and most books cater to that. It is refreshing to read a different take on becoming a business owner. There is no fluff in the writing, as it is a realistic overview of the ways to get started as a business owner, and what to expect. Interesting read.
Muller's style is dry, though when you are documenting business processes and helpful systems , it takes a particular type of talent to craft a compelling narrative, and the author doesn't have that talent. That said, he has had a lot of experience buying, building, and selling businesses, and these pages are replete with the lessons of that experience. Be patient, read it in segments, and you'll get through it, though you will be fairly bored in the final fifth of the book.
Full of Details, Not Fluff Well-written. Well-formatted. Challenges the business norm that more money and more growth is always better. Instead, the author puts emphasis on what’s really important to you—may it be free time, low stress, or a sense of contribution. A practical how-to book with plenty of food for thought.
As someone who is new to the field of business and just getting my proverbial bearings I found this book extremely helpful. Muller's no nonsense approach comes off as harsh at first, but it is justified and did not keep me from enjoying the entire book. I'll definitely be keeping this one as reference.
Very persuasive, thorough, and enjoyable discussion of how structural your approach to work abd life. While I live this already, I Muller gave me a lot to think about. This book is a great thought starter and resource for anyone looking to make the change from trading time for money to living a better life.
Complete guide to owning a small business that will lead to living the lifestyle that you want. Book goes down to even cover the mentality and the attitude and aptitude that one must have to be a successful business owner. Highly recommended.
This book was actually very interesting to me as I've thought many times about wanting to start my own business myself or with my husband. I liked that it touches bases on things like how different being a business owner these days compared to 10 years ago is very different. That we should take into consideration of those difference and also realize that it will continue to change as time goes on. It helps you think about different things that I wouldn't of thought about when thinking about becoming a business owner. I also like that you get hear the experiences they've had and encountering with businesses they own. Very good read and would recommend if you're looking into becoming an entrepreneur.
