Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.

The most glaringly obvious of the ghost-written SVH's I've read lollll. Liz is a total bitch who snipes at Jessica every chance she gets which is so unlike her character at the core. Meanwhile Jessica has kinda forgotten that pretending to be someone other than herself to snag a guy never works (see #49 Playing for Keeps when she pretends to be sweet and shy and studious to land AJ Morgan).

A silly plot where Jess pretends to be 2 different people to attract 2 different types of guys from a matchmaking service was asinine, and of course she drags Liz into playing along with the charade during a date-gone-wrong.

This leads us into Liz reevaluating her predictable and "boring" life and I guess we shall see how THIS plays out in #63! 🤪

I'm not going to rate this as it's a childhood re-read but I had fun revisiting this series! It's definitely a different experience as an adult, but it was a quick and fun read. I definitely like Jessica less than I remember after reading this book though. It was also interesting that as I started reading this book I began remembering how it would end from when I first read it.

Looking forward to re-reading more of these!

I downloaded this book via Kindle Unlimited.

So in this book Jessica decides she's over SV boys and decides to create not just one alternative personality but two, one for two different boys. But of course, she has to drag Liz into her shenanigans, getting Liz to cover for her when she double books herself. But Liz, not being new to this because we've come across this when Jess cheated on AJ with that guy who tried to kidnap her a good few books ago, for some reason this time around has a complete identity crisis. She decides instead of being herself, she now wants to be more spontaneous like Jessica. Do note, however, that she has continually called Jess reckless and everything else during her schemes and now out of the blue wants to be her. Who'd have thunk it? Not me.

Bored with all the boys she's already dated and ditched at SVH, Jessica decides to sign up for a dating service that specializes in teenagers that she finds at the mall (this seems...implausible and a very poor, legally tenuous business, but we'll go with it). Rather than actually her dating agency form out accurately, she gets 2 (one supposedly for Liz), and fills them out with two different ridiculous personalities- Daniella Fromage (never taken French, but pretty sure that means cheese) is a "sophisticated snob" and Magenta Galaxy (seriously, did this questionable teen dating agency even TRY to fact check these people? How many overage pedophiles signed up with fake profiles, if they allowed someone to call herself Magenta Galaxy without question?)- a rock and roll party girl-- so she could find guys to date who weren't the usual type of guy she would attract being... you know, a flawless blonde Wakefield twin. Whatever. This book was ridiculous and also one of the most fun SVH books in the whole series so far. The side plot was about Elizabeth wanting to be more spontaneous, which resulted in her getting her hair permed, which... can't stop laughing. I remember perms. They were never a good idea. At any rate, 3 stars for campy SVH fun.

Who's Who
While at the mall, Jessica and Elizabeth see a new dating service advertised for teens. For better results Jessica fills out two applications as two different girls (Daniella Fromage and Magenta Galaxy).

Daniella is all about luxury and sophistication, while Magenta is into rock. Danielle gets a letter from a Pierre Du Lac (who claims he’s traveled all around the continent. Jessica is impressed and gives the green light to have him contact her.

Jessica goes to a girl in her Sorority (Suzanne) and asks her for tips how to be sophisticated so she can impress Pierre. She teaches her about art and opera and tries to get her to watch a foreign film but that’s about all the culture Jess can stand for one day.

Jess gets another letter for Magenta from a guy named Brett S. So she gives them her info, and he calls and then makes a date. This time she goes to Dana Larson for advice who agrees to help her out.

Liz gets all in her feelings when Jessica tells her she’s boring (which will lead into the next book). Lila is offended that Jessica didn’t come to her first, but she quizzes Jessica on topics that might come up on her date with Pierre. Even though it's obvious Pierre is a big fake and doesn’t know not one thing about France, he’s hot so that’s all that matters to Jessica.

The next day (as Magenta) she goes out with Bret S. This date goes good too even though it’s also clear he’s phony (and he won’t dance with her at the club).

The next date with Pierre is at a French restaurant. Pierre doesn’t seem to know Ingrid Berman is (I’m wondering why by this point hasn’t she caught on). They go out for a cappuccino.

She goes out with Bret again to a rave (no info on this date so I guess it went well). Because Brett calls and Alice answers the phone, she starts getting Lila to answer her calls. Somehow Brett sits up a date with Magenta on the same night Danielle has a date with Pierre, Lila tries to give Jessica the message but can’t get in contact with her. So Jessica convinces Liz to do a twin swap.

So they go to a restaurant and every 15 minutes they switch (and I’m wondering why switching every 15 minutes was necessary other than for drama).

Liz notices both of em are phony and calls them both out. Of course, this makes Jess angry.

While with Cara playing tennis she meets another boy Mangino (which sounds like Mangina and just NO). and they go on a date to the Dairi Burger. Dana wants her stuff and she tells her she can get it from Cara. She tells Suzanne the same thing.

Liz calls both guys over to apologize, and they predictably arrive at the same time as Suzanne and Dana. Both boys confess they were lying, and Jessica (clueless as ever) acts like she shouldn’t have seen this bs a mile away. Dana and Pierre hook up. Suzanne and Bret S hooke up. Jessica is happy with Magino.

The B plot is just about Elizabeth’s angst over she’s getting predictable. She does some minor things like (tries something different at the Dairi Burger, paints her toes red,) and a gets a perm. But in the next book, she figures out what will break her out of her predictability.

My Thoughts: Jessica is such a PSYCHOPATH! I swear one days she’s going to have a mental breakdown. One minute she’s going to think she’s Jessa Fields, the next she’s gonna switch up and be Danielle Fromage, the next she’s going to be Magenta Galaxy. Then she’s going to go back and forth having conversations with herself as all her different personalities. Now *that’s* a book I wanna read.

But no sadly enough people just aren’t who they portray themselves to be if you go through their profiles (and today's social media). Not always.

Because of what I experienced from trying to meet someone this way (through a chat room who can tell what’s real and what isn’t in there? Most of them are EXCELLENT liars. It just put a sour taste in my mouth and made me VERY weary about people’s motivations.

I can’t really fault Jessica (even though I thought she was way too naïve) because I had to learn the hard way not to just take people for either who they first approached me as (because later on the masks one by one came off and I learned the TRUTH) or who my mind tried to fool me into making them be (which was what *I*myself needed them to be in my life). But at 16 I was probably just like Jessica (not really carrying as long as they looked good, not trying to look deeper to who they were). So, you live and learn.

Jessica’s crazy outfits again tho! The tidly wink, Scrabble tile, necklace sounds like something I’d rock!

As for switching every 15 minutes this just did not make a lot of sense to me. Why couldn’t Liz just go on the date with one boy and Jess with the other? Then when they got home Liz could have given Jess’s the 411 on what went down.

I LOVED that she told both of these sorry jokers off. I’m just amazed that after (Did Dana and Suzanne hear there confessions?) If so why would Dana and Suzanne would want to date these fools. Then in some books from now, Dana will be writing songs about how she’s fed up with love. (SMH) WELL.. You *did* choose to go out with the guy that just lied about everything about himself to your classmate.

This had me laughing from start to finish. It was so cringe, sensing where it was headed and still having to see it play out. The French film summary was hilarious.

As much as I tire of Jessica's mean girl acts that are quite a constant feature of the Sweet Valley series, I must admit that the whole let's-see-how-many-twin-acts-can-we-get-away-with is quite hilarious.

This time around Jessica decides to sign up with a dating service--twice--once under the name Daniella Fromage and again as Magenta Galaxy. What names! Where does she (or I guess the author) come up with these out there names? Or maybe it's the whole 80s vibe?

I don't recall how the book ended but I like the idea behind it.

Warning, *SPOILERS*

This was an okay book. Jessica gets a new crazy idea to date older guys, but she wants variety! So one guy needs a very soft spoken, calm, smart Jessica Wakefield while the other guy needs fun, punky, and crazy Jessica Wakefield. And it's fun for her, but the only problem is, she's dating two at once! So when she double books, she has to have Elizabeth help her by posing as her... or one of her! They switch off throughout the night so that Jessica can have a turn with both of them, but as Elizabeth helps her, she begins to think that both boys are fakes!

What I really don't like about it is in the end when she has both boys over at her house and they magically get along really well with her friends. I thought that was kind of stupid. But the rest was okay.

I am not sure what my childhood would have been without Francine Pascal or Laura Ingalls Wilder. I found myself equal parts wanting to be a Wakefield and wanting to be a pioneer.
