I picked this up looking for a little escapist romance, and while it's more erotica than romance, I really enjoyed the science fiction elements. I don't usually read 1st person present, so the POV took a little adjustment, but I loved the action and was soon swept away by the adventure. Read it all in one sitting, I do wish it was a longer work, I could have really used more character, more romance development, but that's often the case with novellas, sometimes you just want more. Still, it was a fun and quick read, and I'll definitely pick up another by Hicks in the future.

I really enjoyed this book. It is love, adventure, and science fiction all rolled into one refreshingly original story. I definitely recommend this book. Hicks did a great job and I hope there will be more stories from this universe to come!

Samiyah takes you on the space adventure that you never knew you needed or even wanted. Space, Pirates, Romance and much more draw you into the story like no other book that I have read in the past with some original characters, beautiful world building and a never before read story line. I went through every single one of the ups and downs with these characters and felt emotionally drained in the best way possible after reading a book. 10/10 would recommend to anybody looking for a short but action packed book. Just beware, you may have trouble putting this book down!

That ending! My only real complaint is that I wish this book was longer, but then again sometimes I hate when they drag on for too long as well. Super quick read. On my TBR shelf for ages and I'm glad I finally got around to it.

I am not much of a reader, this book literally threw me back into actually enjoying to read. I have always loved science fiction, space, romance, and more! I finished this book the same day I got it, each turn of the page had me keep wanting more! I was put in my emotions in many different ways, I cried at some parts and got goosebumps on others. I could really sit down and read it all over again.

Reread so I can finally leave a review for this one.
Over the summer, I discovered L.R. Hicks, and I wish they had more works available to read.
If you judge based on covers, you've likely overlooked this little gem of a read. It is definitely worth the borrow on KU, though the current GR link is broken and you will need to manually search for it on Amazon. Samiyah is a little bit Firefly, a little bit Indiana Jones, and a lot exploration of what it means to love. It's a shorter length story, told mostly from Samiyah's first person POV, but there are a few short breaks to give Taren his chance to let the reader know what he's up to during longer spans of time covered in the last quarter of the story.
Purchased from her birth parents when she was a young girl, Samiyah is a slave. A very special, very expensive one who is still waiting for an owner who is willing to pay a massive amount of currency for her. Her procurer and keeper seems rather reticent to let the young woman go...holding out for some unknown reason. Samiyah has been groomed to be perfect beauty in the flesh, from her movements, to her voice, to her aesthetic. No one has ever cared to improve her mind, except her Parishioner, a kind older gentleman who becomes like a father to Samiyah and the other human slave stock kept at the Madam's ranch. He sees a value beyond her flesh that no one else does. After many years, many visits from potential buyers, and many bids, Samiyah's time has come: a terrifying, angry blue mercenary with pink eyes has put in an amount so high that no one will outbid him. Torn between the life she's been groomed for—no expectations for sexual fulfillment, and love is definitely off the table—and her desire to run off with Parish—and his mysterious friend she's drawn to, Taren, the man in black—Samiyah waits until the last minute to make her choice, possibly too late to save herself.
The prose in this book is lyrical and soothing, giving Samiyah a believable softness. Even when she's describing horrors, her words caress and flow over you. Watching her blossom during her adventures as she's valued as something other than a beautiful body, and feeling her low points, makes for an enjoyable and wild ride that will tug at your heart strings.
Hicks likes their themes, from what I've gathered in the two stories they have available to read. Samiyah explores what it means to love and value versus greedy obsession with its need to possess...and who expresses which can be surprising. It's a lot to fit into a shorter story, but it works. There are no OTT Alphaholes in Hicks' works—the closest you'll get are their villains. It's a nice change of pace from a large chunk of standard SFR fare.
TW/CW: enslavement and rape/drug-coerced sex.
I will be looking forward to any additional stories Hicks has to offer. If you haven't read either of their works, these are worth a few hours of your time.
