Ten Mile Bottom

Rate this book
Hitting rock bottom is just the beginning...

I’m a son, a brother, a friend.
A writer.
An addict.
Dead.
Cardiac arrest isn’t enough to keep me dead, though. The doctors brought me back, but for what?

At twenty four I’ve already achieved what most people do in a life time. I’m a successful author, own a flat in the heart of London and drive my dream sports car.
Or at least that’s what people see.
Once the spotlight fades, I’m left alone with my overactive mind, alcohol and drugs the only way to quiet down the noise.
Until an overdose nearly kills me and drags everyone I love down with me.
With the help of my best friend, I leave London and its toxic influence behind, moving to a small town in the outskirts of Cambridge to try and put my life back together again.

If only it were that easy.

Teodora Kostova writes romance where every heartbeat matters. This book is definitely not what I expected but turned out to be a very pleasant and enthralling surprise. 😌 A while ago, I talked with one of my favorite authors and she told me that Teodora Kostava is one of her favorites and her book “Cookies” is one of her top 10 books. And of course, that certainly caught my attention. 😉 So when I got a chance to review an ARC of this amazing book, you can say I jumped into that train right away. 😁

Finn, a 24 years old drug addict and an alcoholic who also happened to be a successful author has died that day for the third time. It was the third time he overdosed and he found out that if he’s not changing his ways, he’s not going to see his 25th birthday. 😬 Guilt ridden and also because he simply has no choice left, Finn has decided to turn a new leaf in his life by leaving everything and everyone behind. That’s when he decided he’d move to “Ten Mile Bottom”, a town he chose by closing his eyes and pointing on the map. 😁 He’s a Londoner, a city boy, who chased fun and adrenaline for all his life. What could a guy like him possibly do and live in a quaint small town like that? And that’s when he met Ben, a mechanic who repaired his car who also happened to be his die-hard fan. When there’s a will, there’s a way. Finn is the only person who can decide to change his life, for better or for worse.

Although there’s two MCs here, this is definitely a one PoV book where it’s solely focused on Finn’s emotions and how he turned his life around. I’m not going to lie, contemporary romance is not my usual jam. 😌 I like OTT books where there’s magic, sci-fi, aliens and yea, you get the gist. 😁 But somehow, Finn’s self-discovery journey completely enraptured and enthralled me until the very end. This book was very close to home too, to be frank. The frustration that you can do nothing to help someone who doesn’t believe that they need help, I knew how that felt and how that made your heart wither and die. This story was heartbreaking yet beautiful and breathtaking at the same time. 😌 And Ben? He definitely won the “boyfriend of the year” award, at least in UK, for sure this year. 😂👏 He’s compassionate, understanding, supportive and loving. 😍 He’s a very important factor in how Finn was able to recover from the endless bottom of self-destruction and despair. But is this book all about self-discovery and matured stuff? Absolutely not! ☺️ There definitely is romance and a very strong one at that. The connection between Finn and Ben was tangible, electrifying and beautiful. 💙 And the love making scenes were simply magic. 😘 Teodora taught us that we just need to open our hearts to make more friends, to get to know people better, to enjoy life and to simply live and love. And she also has a wicked and cute sense of humor. 😁 This novel still managed to make me laugh and smile throughout the read despite being a more matured and mellow type of book. 😌 And this book greatly reminds me of Aleksandr Voinov’s Witches of London: Lars which was one of my favorite matured read last year. It’s these kinds of books that remind us that life is precious and we have to enjoy and cherish every moment like it’s our last. This was my first Teodora Kostava and I have to say I’m very impressed. 👏 And this definitely won’t be my very last. 😉 In fact, I’m dying to read the story of Finn’s BFF Aiden. I hope she’ll publish it soon. 😍

Favorite excerpts from the novel: 💗💜💗

“You always thought there’s no point writing a book unless it hit every bestseller list around the world. No point wasting four years at uni unless you graduated with honours. You always aim for the highest possible point, and put too much pressure on yourself to make sure you reach it.” Aiden paused to lick his lips and pat my hand in his. “But the thing is, once you get there, there’s nowhere higher for you to go, and all you can do is crash back down.”

“What happens when I run out of words, Aiden?” I’d asked. “I don’t think that’ll ever happen.” Aiden’d said, sitting down on the sofa next to me and closing the laptop on my lap. “Words are not a finite number you carry inside you. They’re something you search for and eventually find. So yeah, sometimes you may have trouble digging them out, but other times they will be flying freely around you and all you have to do is reach out and grab them.”

She picked up on the second ring. “Well, well,” she drawled and I couldn’t help but smile. I’d missed her voice. “It’s alive! It can make calls!” I chuckled. “Hey, Angie.” “And it talks! Would you look at that?”

“Why are you doing it then?” I asked with a smirk. Ben’s frown eased, a playful twinkle dancing in his eyes. “Because you’re sexy,” he said, placing the bag with the food on the ground, and moving his hand to the side of my neck. “And cute. And every time you laugh I want to pull you close.”

Ben moaned as our kiss turned more frantic, clutching at each other as if afraid the other would disappear. I’d never been kissed so thoroughly, so sweetly yet dirty at the same time. Ben bit my lips, sucked on my tongue, devoured my mouth as if it was his for the taking.

It’d taken Rose no time at all to figure out I wouldn't like it if anyone but Aiden called me Finney, and I only tolerated him doing it because he was annoying enough to come up with something worse if I objected too much. You don’t like Finney? Fine. You’ll be Slut Waffle from now on.

“You could walk in there right now and announce you want to be a pretty princess riding a unicorn and sprinkling glitter, and have your own show in Vegas, and your dad will be booking the plane ticket while your mum googles ‘specialised unicorn stores near me’.”

How I rented a house literally in the middle of nowhere and ended up with a houseful of people every day was beyond me.

As it’d turned out, it wasn’t London that was toxic, it was the demons inside me. I still fought those demons every single day, and some days it was harder than others. But Ben’s unwavering support, even when I felt moody and unreasonably bitter, helped me in a way I could’ve never imagined.

This is, at heart, a hopeful story about hitting rock bottom and clawing your way to the top again. Addiction is by no means sugarcoated, but neither is it the focus of the story.

Finn does not expect to find love in a small town named Ten Mile Bottom outside Cambridge, but when his beloved BMW has a meltdown, he puts his trust in the mechanic with the warm smile and kind eyes.

Ben is the perfect foil to Finn's moody, slightly disgruntled self. Ben is supportive and patient, and Finn blossoms with such a loving boyfriend by his side.

Forget the relationship angst. This story is all about comfort and healing. It's about making amends and moving on.

I loved the secondary characters, especially Finn's sister, his best friend Aiden, and his meddling but well meaning neighbors who bring pie and invite themselves for tea.

Even as Finn struggles to reconcile with his emotionally distant, manipulative mother, he finds peace with Ben, who has dreams of his own.

I would have loved Ben's POV, but this story belongs to Finn. The author states that this book is based on personal experience, and that honesty shines through.

The ending is absolutely perfect! I loved these MCs (not to mention their sizzling chemistry) and the road they traveled together.

It's so easy to fall in love with Teodora Kostova's characters and their relationships.

The MCs are so supportive of each other. Their relationship development is tender, passionate and romantic. I'm a total sucker for affectionate/tactile couples and this couple totally fit the bill.

The friendships with the secondary characters are also wonderful. I'm so excited that Aiden is getting his own story in Tokyo!! I am looking forward to that book.

PS...Loved the author's note. ❤

The story started really good and at first, I thought Aiden would be Finn’s but when Finn ended up with Ben it was a disappointment. Another thing is the romance between Finn and Ben wasn’t really strong and deep. There wasn’t even some good tension between them! Time to move on…

I received this book as an ARC copy from the author in exchange for a fair and honest reveiw.

OK first indication that this book was really good, I read this straight through in one sitting except for updates and bathroom breaks. I literally just could not put this down. Due to the state of Finn's life at the beginning of the book it was a bit hard to read... a lot of horrible stuff. However once past that I just fell in love with him... he is a truly amazing person who just had a pretty bad childhood and prefers to hide in a drug-induced cloud rather than fact his past. Once out of rehab he moves to a fairly small village to try an get away from what he calls the toxicness of London. He is grumpy and antisocial but that doesn't stop his neighbors from reaching out to him. And then he meets Ben and it's like he can see what his life could be. The thing between Finn and Ben progressed on a glacially slow-burn, 48% and they had just finally kissed. That is just as it should be... anything faster and Finn would have startled like a newborn colt. And Ben had his reasons too. Gotta say the author wrote it to perfection. Oh yeah... and more tears... very good ones though, the author knows how to write endearing very well. I'll let you discover the rest on your own. The character developement was outstanding in this book, and not just the two main characters but the entire cast. That definitely had a lot to do with my many tears happy and sad. The settings for this book were exquisite, I felt like I was there with Ben and Finn every step of the way. Also need to mention Aiden, Finn's best friend. Even though he was not actively present through a lot of the book, he still was there in a big way. This for me was jsut an amazing read that actually was perfectly suited for where I was mentally and emotionally. Now just two quotes I especially liked.

"My chest hurt like someone had stomped on me, and I didn't know why. Anger, sadness and insecurity were fighting for dominance in my head, tearing me apart." ---Finn

"You could walk in there right now and announce you want to be a pretty princess riding a unicorn and sprinkling glitter, and have your own show in Vegas, and your dad will be booking the plane ticket while your mum googles 'specialised unicorn stores near me'." --- Finn

I enjoyed this one, but it didn't wow me.

More on the emotional side, but not too depressing or heavy.

Likable MCs. Good writing. Some steam.

Definitely worth the read.

Surprisingly sweet for a story with some dark and difficult themes. Ben is such a cinnamon roll who comforts and cuddles with shy tenderness. I appreciate the author sharing so much of her own experiences in this story. The depth of emotion shines vividly throughout. Lovely.

I am so glad, I mean REALLY glad, I went ahead and read this book. I've had so much turmoil in my real lif that I've had a big leading change in my reading habits. It seems that lately, I've only been reading books that have little to no angst or maybe even grit, and I've been avoiding the more emotionally draining books. Unfortunately that means I've missed out on some really great books.

Ten Mile Bottom may have a leading character that goes through some real issues in his life, but strangely enough that really isn't the focus of this story. Like for those in the real world, addiction is really not solely about what you are addicted to, but the why you are addicted. That was more the focus of the book, well that and the character trying to live a true life.
I may not be making much sense here, but I will just say...I absolutely loved this book!! I can not recommend it enough!!

Very good! The characters and the story really resonated with me. I also loved the slower development of the romance. The author indicates that this is a story that's very personal to her and that really came across in the writing.

4.5 💘💕Loved this intense and emotional story of a man's journey from rock bottom to HEA (or as close to HEA as realistically possible)
The story starts strong and hits you like a punch in the stomach. Finn is experiencing both euphoria and pain and in an attempt to numb his pain, he overdoses; again. This is the third time he has almost died, but the doctor's warning that if he continues to live his life so recklessly he will not make it to 30, serves as a reality check. From the outside, Finn is a young and successful author with a lot of potential, but on the inside he is racked with angst from his troubled childhood and pain due to the recent loss of his father. His guilt about causing his family and best friend so much hurt and agony over his repeated attempts at self sabotage, makes him take some drastic steps to change his life's trajectory; first of which is to move to a small town named "Ten Mile Bottom". He feels that without the influence of London and the proximity to drugs & alcohol he may be able to recover, one baby step at a time. It is definitely not easy, as the story unfolds from the POV of Finn. In his own words, Finn is unsocial and grumpy most of the times, but that does not detract his friendly neighbors from dropping by to check in on him. However when he meets Ben, (car mechanic, fan and an all-around great guy); his reluctance starts to melt and he starts craving Ben's company and his calming influence. But the path to a happy ending between them is not without a few pitfalls. Finn knows that he comes with a lot of baggage and wants to be honest with Ben about his past, but will Ben accept him? Can Finn remain strong in his resolve to stay away from temptation? Will he ever find closure from his troubled childhood?
This story is more than just a romance, yet the romance is integral to the story. The MCs are realistic and the build-up to their relationship feels organic and grounded. There is a lot of depth in the slow progress that Finn makes and how Ben is so intrinsic to his coming out of the clouds.
This is the first book that I have read by this author and I loved the personal touches and the poignant way she has woven the story. Highly recommended to all fans of M/M romances who are looking for an emotionally uplifting story.👍👍I am looking forward to Aiden's book next😍

I dealt with some addict in my life and I know how hard to stop it before it's too late.
This is a very sensitive issue and I was glad I received the ARC from the author to read and review this.
I like friends to lovers story, as much as I like enemies to lovers.I liked that this story took place in England, one of my favorite country in the world. And I adore the idyllic countryside even more.
So yeah, I enjoyed this book and loving Finn and Ben's dynamic while enjoying the small village life.
My only complain is Finn's Mother, oh I hate that kind of mother, both in fiction and in real life. It's just, too much!

I liked the slow development of Ben and Finn's relationship(not too slow which I am grateful, LOL), and how they're nurturing the pain and be there for each other.
I loved Ben, and how easy he was with Finn and dealing with Finn's problem, and I loved how Finn was there for Ben when he needed Finn. Ben is my favorite, he's easy to love and he's insecurity and vulnerability made me wanted to wrap him in a blanket and momma bear-ing him :)

If you're a fan of this author and especially, a friends to lovers, and cuddly boyfriend Ben, I think this one is for you.

RECENSIONE QUI: https://thereadingslove.blogspot.com/...

description

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

Teodora Kostova writes a personal story, as she details in her author’s note that this book is close to her real life. The story has a truth to it and some of the conversations, which she states have really happened, ring true. Finn has hit his own rock bottom. The day of his father’s funeral he overdosed yet again. He is so guilt ridden over what he has done to his best friend, Aiden, and his sister, he decides this is the time to make changes although nothing has worked in the past. Finn’s relationship with his mother is complicated and they don’t get along. While his mother is an active participant in the turmoil, Finn carries guilt around for their relationship as well and this is another area of the story that has a truth to it.

This is Finn’s story and the book is told solely from his POV. There is not a lot of angst in the book even given the subject matter. The story is about hope and healing and finding a place to belong as Ben is the calm to Finn’s anxiety and turmoil. I would have liked some of Ben’s POV as we don’t really get to know him that much. He is 21, but read older to me and his feelings early on toward Finn and his actions aren’t as clear or impactful since we don’t see his perspective.

Finn was a successful author suffering from depression especially after his father's death. He stopped writing for over two years while being addicted to drugs with his best friend (who was also his editor . Until an overdose nearly killed him he moved to Ten Mile Bottom to recollect himself.

It sounds angsty but that was only the first part of the book. I wouldn't classify this as heavy angst as his journey for recovery from addiction wasn't really touched in depth. There were a few struggles here and there but it wasn't heart wrenching. The development between Finn and Ben was warm and added a lot of cinnamons sweetness to the story. I like how well they both support each other and complement one another. This is the first book I read from this author and the writing was easy to follow through. I would definitely read the author's other works.

Finn and I have much in common.

I didn’t OD or write a novel but using drugs, alcohol & bad choices to escape a horrific mother was my life.

I gave my mother the ultimatum much younger than Finn did and grandchildren didn’t bring her around either. In the end I let her go. Yes, she is still a small part of my life but she no longer has the power to wound or anger me. Now, she is an angry, bitter woman who feels life would be so much better if people did as they were told. She still doesn’t realize she drove everyone away.

I know, TMI but I wanted you to know that this was written beautifully. The characters feel real, warts and all.

I held back a star because I felt the wrap up with Finn’s mother was too easily handled. I’m basing that on my experience with a mentally unstable parent though so make your own decision after reading the story. It’s so worth it.

Oh, almost forgot, I found my own Ben & he adores me. Warts and all.

AMAZING.... that is how I feel about this book.

We meet Finn during a night he his rock bottom. Drugs, alcohol, and life just are not a good mixture for Finn. Finn has had a rough childhood. He is forced to take a good look at his life and things need to change for him.

Finn moves to Ten Mile Bottom to get away from his old life so he can move forward with living. Instant attraction when Finn sees Ben.

AHHH Ben. He just swept me off my feet. He is so caring, understanding, and supportive.

Their relationship slowly develops but once they communicate and move things forward, they are perfect together.

I don't want to give out much more about what happens but there are awesome secondary characters involved in this book too. I laughed, I cried, and my heart was filled with happiness and love.

Check out the book because you will fall in love with Finn and Ben too.

Emotional, Unexpected and Spellbinding

Written in a vivid, sweet, raw and emotionally resonant style that feels introspective, personal and convincing Ten Mile Bottom took me in one man journey of self doubt , reckless behavior , personal and professional vindication .

I saw myself in Finn's struggles with addiction, codependency and parental alienation , as they're my own. As well as Finn , I learnt one have to heal oneself mentally before we are open and ready for the real , the now and the forever. And just like him, I am lucky to have found my own Ben.

It was a pleasure reading this MM, contemporary, love and life story .

Finn and Ben the heroes are relatable , interesting and gorgeous characters . Same goes for the amazing , well crafted and placed cast of secondary and supporting cast of characters . Aiden, Reneé, Rose , even Finn's mom and all the others that take part of Ten Mile Bottom are an important aspect of why this book is so compelling and moving .

This was my first book by Teodora Kostova and I am hook, line and sinker . Looking forward reading/listening to other books from her catalogue.

Some of my favorite quotes from Ten Mile Bottom:

“Words are not a finite number you carry inside you. They’re something you search for and eventually find. So yeah, sometimes you may have trouble digging them out, but other times they will be flying freely around you and all you have to do is reach out and grab them.”

“And sometimes,” Aiden’d continued, placing a hand on my arm to anchor me back to reality. “They’ll be like raw clay you have to mould and shape and reshape before it’s ready for baking.”

“I’m not trying to make this about me,” he said, reaching for my hand. “My point is, we all mess up*, Finn. What matters is how we handle the consequences of our mess ups*.”

"The thing was, sometimes we make stupid, hasty decisions and they break us; nearly kill us. But sometimes, we make stupid, hasty decisions that turn out to be the best thing that’d happened to us in a while. "

Oh man. I totally wanted Finn to end up with Aidan who was not the other MC and that's never a good thing. But I hear that Aidan will get his own book, so there's that.

I can tell that this book is close to the author's heart and it definitely feels too real. But in terms of romance it didn't do much for me. No tension, no conflict, nothing to really spice things up.

There were also a couple inconsistencies and some editing issues.

Ben and Finn are brought together by geography but their chemistry is very evident.
Finn has many things to over come to get to level. Ben has his own issues. They work things through. This felt very real.
I enjoyed the story of them both becoming more themselves and finding love with each other.
Very sweet.

After reading the blurb I was expecting an emotional and gripping story that would tear me up and in the very beginning of the book, it was emotional. Watching Finn and his bestie, Aiden party it up, then with the aftermath of an overdose and the scene with Aiden and Finn in the hospital. But other than a few more scenes throughout, the potential the story had was lost. For me, Ben didn’t struggle with his addiction nearly enough. The transition from that hospital scene with Aiden to his move to Ten Mile Bottom left a lot of open territory to work with that was missed.

Not to say I didn’t like the story, I just thought it had great bones to be so much more. But, let’s talk about what we were given.

I liked Finn and Ben and they fit together well. I adored the fact that Ben stood by Finn no matter what, he was always there to support him. They had good chemistry and I liked what I got to know about Ben, but I wish he had been a more developed character. Since the book is told completely from Finn’s point-of-view, I wish the author had given Finn and Ben more conversational dialogue, so we had gotten to know him better.

While Finn’s mother was a complete nightmare, we’ll get to that later in this review, I absolutely loved Ben’s family. They were so open, accepting, and supportive of both Ben and his brother, Josh and I loved that they welcomed Finn into their fold so easily. I loved the brotherly bickering between Ben and Josh, it had me chuckling out loud. I really liked Aiden and I’m glad he’ll be getting his own book. I’m looking forward to reading it.

I also liked Rose, the neighbor who wasn’t afraid to tell Finn what she really thought about him. They fought like brother and sister and I adored it.

Now, Finn’s mother: As I said, she was a complete and utter nightmare, but I can relate in some ways. As a person who suffers from depression, I know it can, and often does, manifest as anger. When I’m not properly medicated, I get mad at the slightest and stupidest things, but I also know what I’m doing. Yes, I see it in myself after the fact, and I’m sure Finn’s mother did as well. When you get that way you know what you’re doing and in that respect, it was hard for me to forgive her for her treatment of her children. But, in the end, although for me it may have been too little, too late, I’m glad they were able to repair their relationship.

All in all, this was an enjoyable read, filled with new chances to fix old mistakes, friendship, laughter, and love. Recommendable!

It wasn't the right time for me to read this book. Too much angst. Will try again later when my head is in a better space. As it was now, I just wanted it to finish.

IT'S REALLY ME. NOT THE BOOK!

Teodoras writing is excellent as usual and I really cared about Finn. But yeah.

I got the audiobook from the author in exchange of an honest review.

Finn's life is spiraling out of control after his father's death until he OD's, while he's in rehab, he hits rock bottom and decides to turn his life around, so he moves to Ten Mile Bottom to escape from London and try to go back to writing. Unfortunately, sometimes it's not too easy to escape from our demons.

I wasn't too sure I even liked Finn at first, I found him to be self-absorbed and oblivious, too wrapped up in his own pain to look at the hurt he'd caused others with his actions. He did get a lot better and I ended up loving him. I enjoyed watching him work on getting better, on writing again and trying to be a better person overall.

I adored Ben, he was such a kind, sweet, patient man, so supportive and loving. He'd also gone through a heartbreaking event and that made it easier for him to empathize with Finn. I loved the progression of their relationship, it was a slow burn, but once they finally gave in to their growing feelings, it was amazing. Ben and Finn had a lot of chemistry and the sex scenes were as hot and passionate as Ms. Kostova has us used to.

Regarding the secondary characters, I loved Renee, Finn's sister, Rose, Finn's teenage neighbor, and Aiden, Finn's best friend, who I was so happy to learn will get his own story! I hated Finn's mother with the fire of a thousand suns, she was so passive aggressive and the way she treated Finn was appalling.

Overall, Ten Mile Bottom was an emotional rollercoaster, angsty, heartbreaking, sweet, hot, but above all, full of heart and fantastic characters that I fell in love with. Very recommendable!
