"Respect to you Royal." ~ Bear Grylls. Have you ever wondered what it's like to be homeless, to be that person sat in a doorway as you walk past? Lee West did and he set out on a mission to find out. This led to a dangerous week of living undercover, under the stars. With his best friend he begged for any food and money whilst battling a brutal winter storm to find shelter. Would the week be hard or hilarious, or both? Would the diverse street characters welcome or resent their presence? On a daily basis they encountered hardship, harassment and humour and ultimately they became attached to this lifestyle. Then like many others who choose this existence, they found it hard to adjust back to normality. This true story provides a shocking and humorous insight into life on Britain’s streets. You’ll get so attached that you’ll feel like you’ve robbed a couple of Tramps… shame on you!
Full Lee West had a fascination with one day spending some time in a beggars shoes. His adventurous nature as a Royal Marines Commando meant he found it hard to relax and sit idle whilst on leave. With his Christmas leave approaching and no plans, he decided he would combine these situations and embark on an audacious and dangerous to spend a week as a Tramp. No money or shelter and at the mercy of strangers for food and water. He was joined by his best friend Paul and some ground rules were set; they would do it as bona fide tramps and not reveal their true identity... to go under the stars and undercover. Would it be hard or hilarious? Maybe both? A charity page was set up to compliment this social experiment and deep concern about the project was expressed by friends and family. The Tramps were undeterred and soon found themselves begging for food and money whilst battling a horrendous winter storm to stay safe and dry. The week found the Tramps meeting a host of highly intriguing and entertaining characters. The Tramps cover story (Ex-forces now homeless) allowed the real stories of the homeless to be uncovered and they soon found themselves welcomed into the community by some; whilst others remained hostile to outsiders. Becoming homeless was easy, they just walked out of their front door… putting it back down turned out to be a little tougher. The Tramps had become homeless by choice but were they the only ones that had made a choice to live this seemingly difficult lifestyle? The week long adventure contains hilarious encounters, lovable characters and crippling heartache. Walking the streets with the Tramps will provide you a funny, enlightening and shocking insight into life on our streets. It provokes emotion and guarantees satisfaction, in fact, it’ll provide so much value you’ll feel like you’ve robbed a couple of Tramps… shame on you!
I was amazed at what Tramp1 and Tramp 2 did. I couldn’t put the book down. Each day was different yet the same. Looking for food and shelter. Met some interesting people along the way and by the end of the book I was so engrossed in the people that they were encountering along the way that I felt I knew them too. Well done Tramp 1 and Tramp 2.
Excellent book, with a genuine insight to life on the streets. Written with humour and seriousness of the issue, it takes the reader on a journey with Tramp 1 and Tramp 2 as they embark on their adventure on Swansea streets. Definitely worth reading. Look forward to Trampface part 2
Was delighted to discover the book is set in Swansea. I can picture all the weird and wonderful situations vividly. Thanks to the author for bringing those characters to life.
