There is a sense of impending endangerment all throughout the first book in the Rangers of Big Bend miniseries, especially after reading the very chilling scene at the beginning. I never knew what was going to take place, nor did I know who was responsible for the threats until carefully placed clues led to the truth. Lara Lacombe brings realism to RANGER’S JUSTICE, where buried emotions resurface and a sinister plot is methodically carried out.
While hiking to a spot on a trail which needs repairs, park ranger Quinn Gallagher stumbled across upon a murdered woman and then days later, he comes upon another body. Big Bend National Park is usually a place where people find enjoyment and peace, yet these discoveries mean hikers are not completely safe until the incidents are resolved. A profiler from the FBI is sent to assist the local authorities, and Rebecca Wade interviews Quinn since he found both women. Though nothing points to him being involved, she wants to make sure he is not connected. Rebecca plans to stay in the area, and she will be closely watching the park ranger while gathering information.
With no concrete evidence, there are a multitude of questions needing answers about the murders. As Rebecca searches for any relevant details, several unforeseen disclosures are revealed along the way, and I was not expecting one in particular. Lara Lacombe steadily builds the suspense of what is actually occurring in the picturesque park, and her imaginative scenarios really kept me captivated. I like when just enough hints are given to keep me guessing, but not too much is divulged which would take away my interest.
RANGER’S JUSTICE has intriguing murders to solve, while the romantic elements are often heartfelt with sincerity. Both Quinn and Rebecca have a reason to feel love is not in their immediate future, yet they cannot deny the surprising connection between them. I enjoyed seeing how these two would react to different circumstances that arose, and their behavior told me a lot about their natures. Rebecca and Quinn are compassionate plus determined to do what is right, and they certainly had to make some difficult choices about numerous situations that were linked to the killings along with events related to their personal lives. The Rangers of Big Bend miniseries takes place in a locale where the environment is vividly colorful and usually produces much happiness. Yet conditions can quickly change, and the result is an engaging story.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of the book, and all comments are my honest opinion - 4.5 Stars
It’s never too late to read a really good story or to begin (binge read) an intriguing series – and I’ve found both in Ranger’s Justice the first story in the Rangers of Big Bend series.
Although, as far as story details go, I need to be very careful not to give away vital information that you should discover on your own in Rebecca’s and Quinn’s story. I enjoyed this one very much, so it’s not going to be easy to tone down my enthusiasm for this couple and their experiences.
Rebecca is an FBI profiler assigned to an apparent serial killer case in Big Bend National Park. She’s been on the job for several years so this isn’t her first time, but she will get more personally involved in this case for several reasons. One, of course, is the strong attraction to Quinn, a man she has to decide if he is at the core or the outside of this case… and at first, that’s not blatantly obvious to her so she’s cautious around him. Yet, as time passes she’ll find herself not only deep in an attraction to this complex man but right in the middle of danger, as well.
I don’t read suspense or mystery with the goal of figuring out who the villain is. Frankly, it’s more fun for me to try to put puzzle pieces together while enjoying the romance building surrounding the danger. But I did have my suspect – a rather vile one at that – who I kept an eye on throughout Ranger’s Justice. Was I right? Eventually, yes. But even with my suspicions fully engaged that took nothing away from the pure enjoyment of watching this story unfold.
Both Rebecca and Quinn have some serious parts of their pasts that will factor into their reactions to each other. Without giving away details, I was struck with how strong each was in their own ways, and when they knew the time (and the person) was right for them, how they faced not only the future but their past together. I liked this couple so much, and walking alongside them on this journey was a pure reading pleasure for me.
Ranger’s Justice is an intriguing romantic suspense story, one that will keep you on your toes, find a few twists or turns along the way, discover just how vile a human can be, and witness how the heart may have known loss but can rebound to love again… differently, but no less passionately. I had fun, and that’s the whole point.
Well-pace tale with disturbing subject matter tactfully handled. The heroine walks a fine line between attraction and dedication to her job. The solution is more obvious to the reader than to her, but this wasn't meant to be a serious who-dun-it. The hero is a strong, but realistic character. I like heroes that aren't so alpha male they're unbelievable. This guy is strong and outdoorsy, but also has trauma that's he working through and isn't dominating. Their relationship allows her to be strong and assertive, making it more believable and a pleasure to read.
FBI agent and a Park Ranger. Both had lost love ones doing what they enjoyed. They are brought together hunting for a serial killer. Action, suspense, and a HEA.
