Just trying to imagine presenting the highlights of ME sets off alarm bells in my head. Why would anybody want to know anything about me? What about me is remarkable enough to tell?
When I think about these questions, I recall lying on my bed back in high school, headphones muffed over my ears, heavy metal blasting through my head. As with most teens, music’s power seduced me, and as I listened, I found myself admiring the albums' cover art (yeah, I’m old enough that I used to by LP’s) and I found myself reading about the singers and guitar players and drummers in the liner notes. Why? Because those musicians had created something that was deeply personal, passionate, and wonderfully emotional, and they’d shared it with the world. They’d shared it with me.
It made me want to know them through more than just their music. So, I read.
Through the years, I found myself reading about writers I’d enjoyed, historical figures I’d admired, politicians who weren’t dipshits, and business leaders who’d built great companies. Again, why? Who the hell knows? We’re all just people. I think we find each other interesting. We like to feel connected.
And that was my answer, at least as to the WHY.
On the WHAT I can say about me, for those who feel moved by my work: I’ll give it a quick go.
I was born an Air Force brat and lived in a dozen states before I graduated high school. I’ve worked my way through a wide variety of jobs, left most on a whim, owned businesses, lived through times when I had more money than I knew what to do with, and worried my way through times when I wondered how I’d pay the rent.
Life has been boring at times, and it’s been plenty exciting, too. So far.
I’ve traveled to India, stood atop the tallest mountains around, swam with sharks, smarted-off to cops, and been arrested. I’ve tried beer and weed, but never made a thing of either one. I’ve been brushed too close by death a few times. Thankfully, doctors, EMT’s, and nurses were kind enough to put all the pieces together again. I've ridden my bike so deep into the mountains it felt like I was alone on the edge of heaven, and I've watched the red sun sinking on an evening so clear it looked like it was falling off the edge of the world.
I’ve always had a hard time being where I am, wherever that is. My daydreams forever call from just over the horizon.
I’ve been asked by a dozen bosses where I see myself in five years, and I've lied every time, always telling them what they wanted to hear. Because the only thing I knew for sure, was that I wanted to be anywhere but there.

This is the penultimate book of this series. In other words do not use this book as an entry point for this series. In this one the war continues.
I would classify this offering as more of a novella than a novel as it came in under two hundred pages. This is your classic set up book to get the pieces into the positions for the final battle. This is the reason I could not give this book a higher rating. There was a lot of set up and a lot of pondering by characters in wondering what to do next. This was both a positive and a negative. It felt real but at the same time stopped any momentum. We just came to a stop and set up the action for the finale. I also thought the writing took a step back too. I didn't think the author did the best job with the descriptions of the few action scenes. They just did not grab me like they did in previous books of this series. Even the ones where loss was suffered made me say "okay" instead of having any sympathy. Throughout this book it just felt like we were going nowhere with it.
I know my review makes it sound like this was a bad book. It is not a bad book. It just isn't as strong as other books in the series. I liked it and I look forward to the finale now. Especially if my theory from the setup from this book comes true. I was looking for more of an emotional impact like other offerings from this series. Let's face it though. If you have gotten this far into the series you are going to read this one and most likely the next one.

Three and a half stars. This one was a little too short. It isn't that Adair cut things off, more like he just didn't say enough. This was a 'middle' book it set things up for the finale it just didn't do anything else. It was just enough to drive the story forward but it seemed to me that by adding fifty pages to Book 4 and a hundred or so to Book 6(5) this could have been eliminated and the story would flow better making each book more complete.

I continue to chip away at the Freedom's Fire audiobook set I purchased earlier this year. I believe this is the fifth month in a row I've added one of these quick reads or listens to my monthly TBR list. I like having a series like that on standby that isn't too deep, they are short easy reads and often times give me a nice break from other epic type of reads I may be working on. Freedom's Fall stays right in line with that. Though I will see it had a couple of unforeseen situations arise that I didn't see coming. I'll try and get into those a bit more below without giving too much of a spoiler.
The pacing continues to be perfect for what I expect from this series and what I intend to use it for. These are very fast paced short stories. I'm guessing this entire six book series probably could have been released in just a duology splitting it in half and it would have still flowed well. As it is though, this format helped me work it into my monthly reads much easier. I'm thankful for that! Still no real issues with writing style or names to trip me up. Greg Tremblay continues to do this story justice with his narration as well.
The world building expanded a bit more on the story and some aspects previously mentioned or discussed. Specifically areas of past battles and the future of the colonies. Beyond that we get more of the same with Bobby Adair giving is plenty to envision that we are in the story as it takes place. I'm often listening to this story while walking my dog and I find myself really focusing on the story which isn't always easy while trying to also keep an eye on my dog and the many distractions she faces while out walking.
The character development also continues to progress forward. This is one of the areas I figured I'd touch on the previously mentioned unforeseen situations. We have some developments in Freedom's Fall that both bring some sudden conclusions to some characters (we haven't seen many of our main core of characters fall victim to this war) and characters needing to re-evaluate their priorities before deciding what their next move will be for book six. Out of the first five books in this series this one seemed like it took one of the more deeper dives into humanity and giving the characters tough choices to make in whether to try and protect themselves and those closest to them, or perhaps sacrifice to save humanity in this war in general.
As it's shaping up, I will more than likely finish this series next month. It's been well forth the single credit I used to pick up this box set to say the least. It's been a very pleasant surprise and I'm glad I took that chance on an author I'd never read previously and in probably my second favorite genre being science fiction.
I'd continue to recommend this series to fans of science fiction looking for some quick easy space odyssey type of stories.

I'm binge reading again. Not sure why, but it's something only Bobby Adair seems capable of making me do.
Book 5 in the series was a sucker punch to the gut after the butt-kicking victories of the previous book. I'm not going to give too much away, only to say that some of the characters I've grown to enjoy (or be irritated by in a nice way) bowed out in a way that brought home the randomness of war. And Kane suffered a massive loss.
I like the mix of action, sci-fi, characterisation and most of all a plot that just keeps you hooked. I swear this series is the literary equivalent of an endorphin high.

As I read this series in order, I can confidently say that this is the best book so far. It honestly had me emotionally invested from cover to cover, and I found myself wanting to read it, which was definitely not that case for the first 2 volumes in the series.
My only pitfall with the book is that our main character (Dylan Kane) is faced with 2 choices, one unrealistic, one I deem as the much better option. And unfortunately he chooses the unrealistic option. Which makes sense given his character, but I find unfortunate as it's clear that he has had very little character development throughout the series so far.

Book five is about decisions - fight or flight, save Earth if possible or begin anew elsewhere, stay together or separate to different horizons...
A few battles but this installment was more reflective, and yet those battles and loses set those very questions about future decisions.
Well-written as usual.
I have the omnibus edition but just wanted to post these thoughts whilst fresh.
Highly recommended.

Good prelude to the final book
Although this book is a bit of a downer after the high point of book 4 it still has all the elements that make the series fun to read. I think the reason why the author took the story in this direction is because it is the prelude to the last book in the series. I think he’s setting the stage for the big finale.

Tarlow is real?
Bobby is one of my favourite writers and this sci-fi series is brilliant. Not going to try and sell it, if you got this far you are as hooked as me. Biggest disappointment is only one book left but at least its out in April. Oh yea, and no flying monkey's, why?

The book is primarily a bridge between the last book and the final book in the series. With spoiling the story, there are some losses to the band of warriors but the book sets up for the final book.

Intriguing plot, interesting characters, and an entertaining narration — no cliffhangers. Like the author’s style though there’s some profanity and sexual stuff--use fast forward. A pleasant reading experience.

I read the first book in this series in early 2021, but was not compelled to continue the series. On a business trip in 2023 I grabbed the entire series and found it to be a good distraction from the grueling meetings.

Change of pace, change of scenery. But continues to be well written, action packed and satisfyingly logical with the choices given. The narrative flows easily and I'm speeding through with satisfaction.

This is a really short installment with a lot of tv like melodrama similar to Star Trek and Mass Effect. The story is baseline engaging but it carries you through to the end with ease, which is a plus going into the final book.
