Jules is one unconventional heroine. She might not be the best fmc out there but there is not a doubt that she makes a very compelling and very complex character. For one, she's got the most complex development throughout the series. And as a result, the most improved one, too. She is the infamous mean girl, snotty to the bone. She wears selfishness, pettiness and rudeness like badges of honor. She supposedly ruined Huxley and Jacob's friendship and in turn has kind of messed up the dynamics of the whole family. She has obviously put Ash through a wringer with her insults and schemes. In short, this girl is THAT heroine everybody hates.
However, during the last chapter and the epilogue of Heart of the Walker (book 2), the author surprised me with a snippet of Jules in a raw moment. It has been a rude-awakening so to speak...because everything with Mistress Black is not what it seems. Sounds pretty cliché, but not really. Soul of the Elite, ladies and gentlemen, this novella is the baddest of all novellas just like how Jules is the baddest of them all. And I am freaking in love. This is it, this part of the series has sealed my love and devotion for the whole thing.
Now, I don't mean to justify Jules's behavior and actions and all the other previous 'troubles' she has caused. Jules won't want that either, I think. What I do mean to say is that she's not shallow as the usual mean girl of the story. She's layers. And layers upon more layers until you see the softest, weakest core. The one who yearns for her brothers' love and attention and for acceptance among peers. The one who wants to make a change for the betterment of herself but has no clue how to start. The one who also lost her parents. Interesting how survival varies to each individual. For which I'm glad she finally has her own family; even if it means she has to find where she will belong to. I'm glad how she finally has someone believing in her, someone who sees not only the ugly but also the beauty that even she herself has difficulty believing.
I actually think it's unfair for her in the start. You want to know why?
READ THIS MF NOVELLA. I dare you. And I swear to you, you'll know.
PS I have a confession to make: after this read, I am jaded against her brothers. And I will most probably see Jules and Tallis faultless forever. Ooops, sorry, not sorry.
PPS Speaking of Tallis, he's mmc perfection. Like, he's solely created to fit Jules and her brand of perfection. The things he said to Jules, the things he did to and for Jules...Maverick, Cyler, Jacob, Huxley, Patrick, and Kemper who? HAHAHAHAHAH. I'm saying this again: sorry, not sorry! Just keeping it real, you all, yesss
