Absolutely powerful book. This should be read and read again many times. It has such mind opening content as well as information and methods to produce the proper outcomes you seek in life. Absolutely mind blown by this book and look forward to rereading it and utilizing these methods in my every day life.

Ideal for us is that our happiness is connected to external sources like money or other people. Lasting happiness does not come through that. Not surprisingly, it comes through:

-yourself,
-living in the present
-knowing what happiness and pleasure is
-appreciating simplicity
-be on their own

Authors Louis Fourie and Kevin Horsley are two friends who share a keen interest in the dynamics of ‘the optimal life’. They come from different professional backgrounds, yet are united in their sense of optimism, love of simplicity, and belief in humans’ capacity to improve. Louis spent the first 10 years of his professional career practising as an economist in the South African financial industry and was one of the first winners of South Africa's Economist of the Year award. He later became one of the founders of a leading South African wealth management business and acted as chairman of the group for twelve years. After retiring from corporate life, he founded The Logic Filter, a small consultancy through which he mentors young professionals and acts as an independent advisor to emerging business leaders. Louis contributed to numerous national economic publications over the years, and co-authored a number of books on different subjects. Kevin is a lifelong student in the field of neuroscience. He has been analyzing the mind and memory and its capacity for brilliance since 1990, looking for new and better ways to ‘run your own brain’ and optimize its capacity. "Walk away from non-sense. Clean the slate". This is the essence of the book that provides practical guide to a happier living. The author does come up with some very useful thoughts like, "Public respect starts with self-respect". A book worth reading

It's a great book. It has nuggets of wonderful thoughts, in a condensed form. So, you could quickly read through. Many of those may not be new, but while reading the book, you would also realize that these are the obvious mistakes, which results in compromising one's overall happiness and wellbeing. Only criticism I have is that it is written in the form of bullets or summary, without any story-line, so it becomes difficult to remember and/or internalize. So, the best way to gain out of this book is to take notes and identify 2-3 things that you would want to follow, after reading this book. Otherwise, you may not gain much out of it.

Who doesn't want to be happy. Sadly, many people really don't. If you would like to be happy and have a better life, the author has some great information on how to do just that. I like that this book looks at the basics and shows readers how you can change just a few things and make life better. Maybe by helping make yourself happy, you will bring that optimism into other's lives as well.

Once again we are reminded that happiness can be found in experiences rather than things. “Everyone” seems to reach old age with overflowing closets and drawers, therefore we must need reminding often!

It is a nice to read book. Initially there are some theories of sort, in the end it is like a speaker talking about almost everything in life. Good to read 1-1 small chapter at a time and think about it deeply.

This is a short but impactful book. The examples given and points mentioned in the book are practical and can be incorporated into daily lives. As they explain in the book happiness is not an event but is a way of life and a long term lifelong process. It is an outlook. I would recommend this book to everyone.

One big reason for our unhappiness resides in the older part of our “reptilian brain.” Even though our physical survival is more certain now, we still act upon our fears and perceptions of lack as if they were life-threatening. For example, we may experience a stressful period at work, which is not a survival threat. However, our reptilian brain doesn’t “know” that and causes us to experience feelings as if we were in real danger. In short, we are biologically wired to be unhappy.

Happiness requires intentional effort. The underlying belief many of us have is that happiness either happens to us or doesn’t and that there’s not much we can do about it. If we want to be happy, we need to assume responsibility for our own happiness, rather than playing the role of a victim to our life circumstances. Start to see happiness as a practical, manageable affair that you can take control over. You can work on it one day at a time. Gradually identify and then transform these behaviors, thought patterns, and emotional responses that don’t serve your well-being.

Good one!

I liked the book very much. Initially, I was skeptical about choosing this book to read. Because, I tried a similar book earlier which is related to one's destiny and I felt all these type of philosophical books are not much useful. Still I chose to try this and now I am happy that I did. It's awesome. But, it is true that any education doesn't make sense unless practiced in real life. This book is not just to read but to remind yourself everyday and practice it for your own good. It was mentioned that every review would be personally read by authors. I am not sure of it but if you read this, Kevin Horsley I really want to appreciate you 😀 Thanks for a great book 😊

This wonderful quote from page 14 of The Happy Mind: A Simple Guide to Living a Happier Life Starting Today by Kevin Horsley and Louis Fourie is reflective of a higher level of thinking about happiness. These clear and attainable suggestions to change an aspect of your life can be used by most people especially those seeking real change in the way they relate to the world.

Although I have my own ideas about happiness the are totally outside the box, I read this book with an open mind. The authors say all the right things to help a person change for the better and hey organized the book in such a way that each chapter flows nicely into a cohesiveness that makes the book an easy read page turner.

Chapter 1 is a great overview of the typical ideas of happiness that will make you feel ok about being difunctionally happy. Then they gently turn your happy world upside down to shake out all the stuff to make way for some universal truth that is designed to change your MIND. Such as, happy people, “…don’t think is contradictory and conflicting patterns. They aren’t at war with life…” A nice feature I like is that you don’t have to guess what to take with you from the book, there is relevant bold print throughout the book of some of the best pointers. To that, my favorite section was #6 in the Happiness is…chapter entitled, “HAPPY PEOPLE INVEST IN THEIR OVERALL WELLNESS. Right on point, because if you are busy taking really good care off yourself physically, spiritually and financially, what room do you leave for foolishness that brings unhappiness?

Just in case you still want to hold on to illusions about joy, Horsley and Fourie open a can of worms to make sure you are clear of what you got with Chapter 3 The Origin of Unhappiness. These points will hit home for those still dwelling in low vibrations.

The final chapter was a bit unconventional and an unexpected surprise. In addition to a nice recap of the previous chapters, the chapter is filled with really nice quotes and passages that are contagious with smile producing thought provoking wisdom. Can you even imagine what “spirit cancer” is? How do you resist “brain pain”?

I like this book but can’t really say who I would recommend it to. It’s a short pleasant read and can easily be used as a reference book to come back to again and again as you are growing into your happy mind! I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest opinion review and I give it 4 ankhs by my review scale.

Being given the ARC of The Happy Mind made me, well, happy, because this kind of book is completely my jam. I'm not normally a big reader of self help type books, but I will always take the time for anything that has to do with the search for happiness. Isn't that we are all looking for, happiness? I believe so, even if some people claim not to - I just suspect that our search for happiness might look different from each other.

The book is written by Kevin Horsley, the best-selling author of Unlimited Memory, and Louis Fourie, and they have done significant analysis into what is different in the minds of happy people.

The crux of the issue, of course, is what is happiness? This is no easy question, as philosophers from the entire human history have been trying to peg down the answer, without consensus. And yet, I think that we can agree that some people are just happy, and some people are just not. And a careful observer can see it has very little to do with external circumstances - having more does not equal more happiness, and can often have the opposite effect. Why is that, exactly? It does begin in the mind, and not in the world around us.

The first question the authors ask is what is your personal definition of happiness, and I struggled over this question. It is phrased as "definition of happiness" and not as "what would make you happy." Because, essentially, nothing can make you happy. You are happy, or not, based entirely on your wiring and your attitude towards life.

So, how happy are you really? One little test you can do is to just spend time with yourself. No work, no screens, no books to distract you, just ... you. On your own. How does that feel? Do you like yourself? Are you your own best friend? Happy people enjoy spending time with themselves. You might be thinking that maybe happiness just isn't for you.

The good news is that anybody can change their thoughts in order to achieve happiness, and The Happy Mind does decipher the nine common qualities shared by happy people. It is essentially the code to happiness. Happiness is simple! Except that it's not at all, because it can take a lifetime to reconstruct our thought patterns into those that are constructive and optimistic, which the authors recognize.

But you can start. I greatly enjoyed reading The Happy Mind. It was quite short, actually, and the actual essence of the book very short, but it is rounded out with some daily exercises you can do to work on your happiness. Because make no mistake, happiness is not magic, it is a lot of work. And you have to be ready to face yourself, and your world view, here. But I found that while the book didn't make me happier, per se, it made me want to be happier, to nurture an attitude of productivity and optimism. That's worth a lot. The authors suggest reading this book in small snippets at a time, to really give your mind the time to register the suggestions. I just might do that.

“Action may not always bring happiness; but there is no happiness without action.”

The most peaceful book I listened to, very poignant, happy and extremely important. A lot of great quotes and rules to stay true to yourself and be happy. Very simple read and the voice who read it is extremely brilliant, slow and clear.
I rated it 3 stars because a lot of it I knew but I did enhance it more, I already follow lots of this daily to stay happy and keep my mind off distracting things.

Some points to take from this books are as follows:
- There is no satisfaction greater than being loving and being loved.
- Learn from pain, don't succumb to it.
- Show Courage, make decisions.
- Laugh more than you cry.
- Be the best of that person you can ever be.
- Create your own reality.
- Look after your body, harness your spirit.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed reading this book. Reminders and encouragement. Although the main points were simply restatements of many of the truths of life ....

1. Invest in self and not try to change others
2. Have self-respect
3. Go for quality in relationships
4. Do not multi-task
5. Learn to forgive
6. Challenge yourself
7. Lessons of past make you stronger, etc.

What was appealing were the perspectives (sound bites) given. For example

1. “Debt is the consequences of trying to live tomorrows life, today”
2. “What you say shapes your behavior - and behavior of others towards you.” (Using word sparingly)
3. “... the lessons of the past make you stronger.”
4. “Reject a tick-tock life.” “Reach out to new frontiers.”
5. “ The mind emulates the environment exposed to.” (Tidy up)
6. Now Counts. “Your future is determined how you spend your days.” “Future is the accumulation of the content of your days.”
7. Observantly there... “every moment is a gift.” “Hold loved ones as if last.”

A delightfully short and actionable read. I've not seen happiness distilled to this level of ease and implementation and greatly appreciated the overview of key behaviors on both sides of the coin. And, then the extensive list of ways to focus on happiness. The book also provides instruction on reading it for the greatest impact which I appreciated. I'm super stoked that I randomly got involved with reading this book.

I ‘read’ this on blinkist.
I sometimes do a “blinkist read” if I have the oppurtunity, as a way to determine if the book will be a worthwhile “real read”.
As the title says, this is a simple guide, and the tips and tricks to change your thinking are explained nicely. Nothing groundbreaking, but a really good reminder That your approach to life can affect happiness. What I liked about this book was that it wasn’t a one size fits all approach and the authors encouraged people to understand that happiness, sometimes, for some people, isn’t an easy find in life, especially because of the way human brains are wired and combined with previous experiences of the individual.
I think it’s worth a real read.

I was thinking the topics discussed in the books for a long time. It is a gem and collection of wisdom(be in the present, today's action determines tomorrow, go with the flow, do not blame, take actions, plan, be happy with small things, manage yourself well physically, mentally & spiritually, lead a simple life, manage your finances well, take some challenges, help others) from many books i read/glimpsed through. As said in the starting of the book, i need to read it again and again to internalize at least some of the concepts and follow them. That is the big challenge. I can visualize the amount of readings and thinking done by the authors before writing the book. Thank you so much Kevin and Louis.

A very satisfying read. A clear cut way of writing taking us directly to how people perceive happiness, unhappiness and what all aspects of our life we can re-think to enhance our happiness. Not much beating around the bush as most self-help books do.
I'm glad that I'm already practicing most of it and it totally resonates with the life values and outlooks I personally have. Impressed at that.
I actually took this book up because of the low number of pages + decent reviews and to wrap up my Goodreads 2019 challenge (this is the last book and there is only 4 days to new year, 2020), but what have I landed at - absolutely wow!
Highly recommended quick read!

The book is built on the core concept of looking inward than outside to achieve happiness. The authors try to narrate the same from different angles and viewpoints, urging the reader to looking within self, not depend on external environment - money, goods or people, to seek that happiness.

Written in a simple language, the book is an articulation of the author's viewpoint, feel that it would have made a stronger impact with more examples and real world scenarios showcasing the truth around the argument.

Nonetheless, the point hits home with me, though as the authors say implementation would be a journey in itself and not a miraculous instant.

This book is a very short read, can be done in an hour or two, yet dense with good ideas that make you ponder about the choices you'd made so far in life. For someone who has read a lot of personal development books, I would say this is more like a summary of all of those.

The 'Practical Guidelines, Thoughts, Suggestions & Reminders In the Interest of Happiness' chapter quickly covers a lot of areas like finance, health, personal responsibility. I would say this is more like a bite-size read. Something you can go over a few pages in the morning for encouragement or quick motivation boost before starting your day.

I truly loved this book because of a fact it talks about happiness as a detailed subject nit mere a superficial topic and secondly because it's a short, power packed version. I felt Kevin has author has done good job highlighting what are the common myths around happiness that either it comes from a different world OR happens in different time OR happens through other objects or persons.

Then he goes about what are some of the traits of happy people versus not so happy one and highlights some of the tips and tricks which one can implement in one's life to be and feel more fulfilled.

A very simple, practical and useful guide for discovering happiness.

The book talks about very simple concepts and important keys to happiness. It is a practical guide that if we consciously attempt to follow, can help unlock our hidden capabilites which will only make us better happy persons. One can definitely pick most or all of these suggestions and practice them in their everyday life to feel the difference. The authors have kept the language very simple and therefore it is a very easy yet very valuable read.

There were many, many good thoughts in this book. I was happy that it was short, because I can tell that I'm going to need to listen to it again. I'm sure new ideas will jump out at me at a different point in time. I liked the focus on what you're doing with your mind...how you're thinking and how that influences happiness, vs. happiness as coming from external factors. I also liked the focus on happiness as a skill that we develop vs something that is bestowed on us by circumstances (ie people, things).

A perfect guide to keep/turn your life happy. Several sections, if not all, are thought provoking and guaranteed to turn your life to a happy one if sincerely followed. As the author pointed out in the book, "Nothing worthwhile ever comes easy" though this book suggests several things to change ones life more happy (more easily) :). One thing I can surely say, this book changed entirely the way how I was taking life and opened doors for new thinkings. Big kudos to the author.

Potentially Life Changing

The concepts and observations presented in this book can change your life, if you’re willing to take them to heart and apply them to your day to day existence. I’ve rarely read a book with so much content I felt inclined to highlight! I love that the authors included small tidbits on spirituality that truly apply to people of any (or no) religious persuasion. I’ll be purchasing copies of this book for both of my grown sons.

the book is an easy read, conversational, relaxed, not too stiff and formal. Unlike other self-help books, this does not mention famous persons as examples but rather approached the topic in a matter-of-fact, life-lab workbook type. It focuses on the reader and the reader’s actions rather than providing examples or case studies to compare a situation from. Read my review here: https://starstack.blog/2019/06/05/the...

One of the best read for Self Growth and Happiness

A very good read. All the points mentioned in the book is very relevant to most of the people. The process to identify one's cause of unhappiness is clear and concise. The advices in the second part of the book to work towards a happy life is very beautifully written. I am trying to implement each and every point to improve my life. And I'm sure if implemented consistently, we can live a happy life.

This book is GOLD. It’s such a powerful book packed with wisdom. It’s this kind of knowledge and books that should be obligatory, prioritized and taught in schools. Almost every sentence is worth highlighting and it’s definitely one of those books that makes you want to print every page and hang them all over your house as reminders. Definitely re-readable; it’s a book that should be read many times!
