This Valentine’s Day there’s more than hearts at risk…
Police officer Myra Reed prefers her life orderly, predictable, and logical. Unfortunately, she lives in the little beach town of Ordinary, Oregon where gods vacation and monsters cause all sorts of trouble.
Her most recent headache is a sexy demon named Bathin, who has tricked his way into both living in Ordinary, and owning her sister’s soul. She wants him out of Ordinary. He wants…her.
Myra will get her sister’s soul back no matter the price. But first she must deal with a stalker, a crossroads deal, and a dangerous spell that could fix everything, or reveal the one secret she’s buried deep: she might be falling in love with a demon.
This novella takes place after Paper Stars, but can be read as a stand alone.
Devon Monk is a national best selling writer of urban fantasy. Her series include Ordinary Magic, House Immortal, Allie Beckstrom, Broken Magic and Shame and Terric. She also writes the Age of Steam steampunk series, and the occasional short story which can be found in her collection: A Cup of Normal, and in various anthologies. She has one husband, two sons, and lives in Oregon. When not writing, Devon is either drinking too much coffee or knitting silly things.
FINALLY, the story is about Myra and a certain demon prince who have been throwing off sexual tension off the charts since Gods and Ends!! Oh, and because of that, this is definitely NOT a stand-alone novella; there are important things happening prior and in this book which I am sure influence the next novel that will be released. AS in, .
Apart from that certain plot, this novella offers speed-dating -- in which Myra uses it for an excuse to interrogate people instead -- fork-eating dragon in form of piglet, one god returning to Ordinary to avoid Valentine's Day, as well as a town stalker that is needs help in socializing rather than being thrown in jail.
I enjoyed Myra and Bathin's "mating dance" so far... and from the acknowledgment at the end of this novella, the next novella will actually feature the two of them. I'm sure it'll be awesome ^^
This is a short story from Monk's Ordinary Magic series told from Myra's point of view. It is a Valentine's Day story about Myra & Bathin, the only demon in the town of Ordinary, Oregon, which is a sanctuary town for gods & mythical & supernatural creatures. Myra & her two sisters, Delaney & Jean Reed are the town's protectors & enforcers of the town, its unique citizens, & its special rules. These magical entities put down their powers while in town & live as humans. Once they pick their powers back up & use them again, they have to leave Ordinary for one year before returning again & laying down their powers once again. Bathin has possession of Myra's sister's soul due to events from the previous novels in the series. Myra is searching for a way to get her sister's soul back from Bathin, but is having confusing feelings about this demon. She hates him for what he has done to her family, but also has deeper feelings & an attraction to him that she cannot seem to shake. This is a cute novella about Myra, her inner thoughts & feelings, & some of the antics that her sisters & the townsfolk get up to in this special little town.
This is a great short story addition to the series.
This short focuses on Myra and her complicated relationship with Bathin, the only demon to be allowed to live in Ordinary, Oregon. This is a short story so you really do need to have read the full length books to really understand the characters and back story going on here. Yes, reading the series is well worth it!
The series revolves around the town of Ordinary, Oregon. It is a beach resort/tourist town that also happens to be a haven for supernatural creatures. Gods are able to visit and stay by putting aside their powers for the duration. Supes find a place where they can interact with humans and relax.
In this story Myra has a strange stalker to take care of, a soul-stealing demon to deal with and deciding if her heart is a trustworthy organ or not. I very much enjoyed this little jaunt into Ordinary. I liked getting to know Myra know and being inside her head. This short does flow into the next Ordinary book, due out later this year, so there isn't a satisfying conclusion. This book is a great interlude in the overall story and I liked it.
It is so much fun being back in town of Ordinary, where the gods come to vacation and visit. In "Scissor Kisses" we get a chance to read about Myra and Bathin. Myra is doing everything she possibly can to fight her attraction to him especially since he holds her sister's soul. Yet, the sizzle between them is unmistakable.
Valentine's Day is on the horizon and two of the three Reed sisters are planning to get their groove on. However, Myra is annoyed at the upcoming event and is looking for a way to get her sister's soul back. However, someone is sending her bizarre poems and gifts. She even goes so far as to blackmail a crossroads demon to help her banish Bathin, he is unwilling to go.
Myra's sisters sign her up for speed dating and it turns into an interrogation rather than a love connection. Will Myra manage to banish Blathin or will she finally acknowledge her growing feeling for Bathin? You have to read it to find out.
It's coming up on Valentine's Day in Ordinary and Maya is left feeling out of sorts for two reasons, first her sister's are both in love and happy with their partners and secondly because of Bathin, the demon, she can't help but be drawn to him. She knows he's evil, she also knows he has her elder sister Delaney's soul, and he won't give it back. Despite this she cannot get him out of her thoughts, sometimes she feels there is more to him than he shows people but she can never let herself forget he is a demon and as such inherently evil. Then she starts finding creepy gifts left for her in her step and in her car, although the gifts are creepy Maya gets no sense of danger but she still holds herself on guard because in Ordinary you never know watching to happen next.
I have enjoyed this series, both the books and novellas, primarily for its clever concept. Ordinary, a small tourist town in Oregon, where gods and monsters lay down their powers and go on vacation. The law in Ordinary, both for the supernational and normals, is upheld by the Reed sisters; Delaney, Myra, and Jean. The sisters are very different but each plays their part in protecting Ordinary, as their family has done for generations. This novella continues the story of the practical, and very buttoned-up Myra and the demon Bathin. Bathin made a bargain with Delaney and now has possession of her soul. Myra wants to get Delaney's soul back, but her undeniable attraction to Bathin is getting in the way. This is a fun, short read but does very little to move the story along.
I know this was a novella, and all in all it read well as one, but the ending was, well, a little bland. I do find her humor in the characters she creates to be intact and as much fun as ever. And I enjoyed getting more info on Bathin. He's becoming quite the mystery. I'm just not a huge fan of novellas because they always leave me a bit unsatisfied. Really looking forward to the next full length Ordinary Magic novel!
I headlined it but went the the beginning and read it all. Unusual for me. Ordinary has given me laughs sadness and love interests. Getting to know the Gods in earlier books and now Bathin. A Demon with soft edges. New love interest for the last of the three sisters ending in Valentine's day. Well written references to other books but a read alone too. The story is as good and quirky as the others. Looking forward to the next.
Cute and amusing story, that makes you feel good all over. A quick trip to Ordinary, Oregon is just what is needed with this long cold winter. The story involving Myra and Bathin and their conflicting attraction to one another. Myra wants her sister's soul back and Bathin wants to keep it. The heart is drawing them closer together, while her sister's soul keeps them apart.
Started off really well but then just ended. Did the scissors get used or were they not required? She the level headed middle sister. The one that always turns up at the right time and the scholar of the three. She's still trying to find a way to get her sister's soul back and seems to have gotten an inkling on how to do so when she corners a demon in some public toilets. Unaware that the floor is at an old crossroads. Will the demon come through with the tools she needs? What about the stalker she seems to have acquired? Will the matter be resolved peacefully? With St Valentine's Day and Eros around the corner, what will she do about her demon?
I mistakenly thought "Scissor Kisses" was the first of the Ordinary Magic book, it's actually close to the midpoint in the series. It's novella length with plenty of quirky details and characters, plus references to the story so far. There are two main plots, the fiery non-relationship between policewoman Myra Reed and the hot as hell demon Bathin; and the fact that Bathin has her sister's soul. Nothing is resolved and the story just stops. 3 Stars.
Great short story. I will warn that you can buy this and 2 other short stories together in 1 book called Rock-Paper-Scissors paper. And in Nook it's labeled as book 4. So I bought it thinking it was bk 4 but figured out I already owned 2 of the 3 books in it and already owned Rock Candy and Paper hearts.
Awesome story! You have a bit of a mystery, unusual characters and humor. Yes, the romance is there and Bathin is still looking at Myra. Can’t say too much because it most definitely would spoil the story. Please, read and enjoy this excellent story of romance, action, mystery and humor!
Monk continues to entertain. This story focuses on Myra Reed, the middle sister, and the tough choices she has to face as a cop and a sister. The character interactions shine through the whole thing and this story has one of the best speed dating scenes ever written.
Laugh at loud funny and poignant in parts, as only Ordinary Magic stores can be. I loved every minute of this and can't wait for the continuation of Myra and Bathin's story.
I love this series. This was just too short - more like the beginning chapters of a really good novel. I’m ready for a real complete story from Ordinary and it’s wonderful characters.
Ok. This was a truly terrible teaser! I cannot wait to read what happens next! Great characters. Lots of building romantic tension. I'm on pins and needles Devon Monk, so please write quickly!
This is an amazing novella I highly recommend this. I enjoyed reading it so much. Brought a whole new meaning to this sister and her development as a character in this series. Bravo
A quick read that leaves you wanting more,it was fun revisiting the town of Ordinary, and a nice change in perspective, but it feels unfinished, much like the first half of a book,a few threads are wrapped up but the big one.is just getting interesting, bring on the next!
I knew this was supposed to be a short and sweet book but it was still over too soon. Thats the only reason i i gave 4 stars and not 5,I have read and enjoyed all of the ordinary books. I think they are a must read.
It was really interesting to get a story from Myra’s perspective. The relationship she has with Bathlin is really interesting and I can’t wait to see what happens next!!!
