Luca has discovered his father’s hideout. He hunts the legendary vampire alone, pushing Katelyn away to safety. But Dracula is not so easily bested. He evades Luca so he can tap into Katelyn’s power—the magic that lies at the heart of Icarya. Luca’s heart sinks as his father draws him further and further from his eternal love.
Across the Great Sea, Katelyn is summoned to the slave city Likhan. After the death of Seht Reza, Likhan teeters toward revolution as her nephew Darien seeks the throne. To help him, Kate must work alongside Alaric, the assassin who will stop at nothing to win her back in Luca’s absence. The dark forces mounting against Darien leave Kate vulnerable to the destructive pull of her elemental nature.
Dreams of Ice and Shadow is the heart-stopping second volume of the Frostbite series, where gothic terrors invade epic fantasy. Sinister, unnatural horrors are unleashed, and Katelyn and Luca’s passions burn brighter than ever as the dangers facing Icarya threaten to separate them forever.
My fave quotes in screen capture below. Smart fella, Luca, not interrupting Kate's thoughts during battle. It's a nice little world, full of necromancy, some violence, some anger, and no deep thoughts about much of anything.
For me, this book was heavier on the adventure/mystery than the romance. The romance was a soft underline type. It was more so showing respect for each other while they were having their battles away from each other before coming together again. I, unfortunately, was not able to feel a connection and have the story pull me into its world. There was a point in the book that I was struggling to read when it was a series of memories flipping. It was very confusing and didn’t hold my interest. I was struggling with Kate’s villain. I needed more information about it and the way it thinks. It felt rushed and a lack of depth. The showdown with Dracula was honestly disappointing. It didn’t live up to the big bad energy villain that he was supposed to have. I found myself setting the book down a lot and sidetracking on other things because I was not able to feel a pull to the story that would keep me up all night reading.
Favorite Quotes: “I will haunt you to the end of your days, which we both know will be a very, very long time!”
“I’ll do whatever it takes to protect the place that has given me a home. And the woman who loves me.”

Ok where do I start! This book was a roller coaster of intense events that I am still not over it 🔥 there were so many twists and turns, packed with action that kept me intrigued throughout the story. The story of Luca and Kate continues in this book. The name of the book is so perfect because we do see lots of ice and shadow there. We also learn some of the characters past which adds to their characters and their lives. Seeing more of the other side characters was so much fun and I can’t wait to read more. In this book Luca and Kate work together to solve the issues at hand, leaving Luca with an impossible choice towards the end of the story. I don’t want to give anything away to spoil if for anyone. I enjoyed this book very much and I am happy this time the book didn’t end on a cliffhanger yet with a sweet perfect ending to this chapter of Luca and Kate, knowing that Kathryn Troy has much more in store for us. Kate and Luca will be back with their friends to continue their journey and I am here for it all. Counting the days till book 3 comes 🫠
🖤Some of my favorite quotes 🖤

🔥“If he doesn’t come back… I’ll never be whole again.”
🔥“A promise… to a man sucking the life out of you?”

This follows straight on from A Vision in Crimson, Luca has sent Kate away to protect her while he goes on the hunt for his father- Dracula. Kate meanwhile faces challenges of her own, tackling her volatile magic, protecting allies, and chasing Shadows. There are higher stakes in this book and more action scenes which was entertaining. I liked that we saw Luca and Kate engage in their own battles and grow as characters, but they always find a way back to each other. The necromancy plot was creative and added to Kate's selflessness to ensure others happiness, and I like that it linked back to Hercules in book 1. It's fast paced, lots of adventure and suspense, steamy romance scenes, and deadly villains.
"If he ever touches you again, I will kill him"
"He put your safety ahead of his own needs, his own happiness"
"My heart will always belong to you. Only you"
"You love me the way I am. I love you the way you are"
"You've held my soul in your hands for a long time"
"I want all of Icarya to know our lives are one. I'm yours, and you're mine. Forever"
When reading the sequel to a book it rarely ever reaches the same height as the first one but in this case I have to say that while I really enjoyed the first book this book was so much better. The characters really grow and I love how much kate and Luca support one another. It’s rare to see both the characters build the other up without holding them back but these two really help the other. I also really enjoyed the other side characters and hope that we will be able to follow more into this world and the lives of all the characters that Kathryn has created! The romance aside it was intriguing to see this other world and the fantasy that is mixed into it. I’d recommend this to anyone looking for a new romantic fantasy. Happy reading everyone and give this series a go! You won’t regret it.
What a ride, this book continues to live free in my mind… even when onto a new novel that’s completely unrelated. For a second instalment, the story flows beautifully from the A Vision in Crimson right into this one. Kate and Luca’s devotion in this Vampire, Paranormal fantasy is everything you need in a quality romance. With devotion, spice and strength in the relationship as the pair continue to grow into much more complex characters in this instalment, whilst building their relationship and growing as individuals. There are complex plots, suspense, magic, and an ongoing battle for survival from far and near. That raises the question ‘Will Luca have to do the one thing he’s against in order to save Kate?’. One things for sure, you could never pick the direction this novel was sending you in and I truely cannot wait until book 3. Kathryn has outdone herself, this ‘frostbite’ series has all the traits of writing success and is sure to gain a cult following.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
What a wild ride! This 2nd book had me engaged from the beginning. Lots of tense moments and amazing battles. I loved the parts that were memories. All of the main characters are loveable, well except the villians, of course. Kate and Luca's relationship is absolutely beautiful and I love how they compliment one another and are stronger together. I was so on edge with the ending, but ended up thrilled. The details used throughout the book are phenomenal and create a vivid setting. Absolutely recommend to lovers of fantasy and romantasy!
*I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review*
I simply could not wait to dive back into Troy’s world of witches and vampires. She didn’t disappoint with the follow up to Frostbite! Luca’s journey after the truth bomb at the end of the first book picks up and is detailed well. Kate is trying to find her way and herself but I think Luca was really the star of this book. The ending made me feel so many emotions and I was super pleased with it!
What I liked about this book is that Kate, one of the main characters, is a Queen, and not the usual princess. Second, it reminded me of the "Game Of Thrones" TV series, if it's set in an alternate world with vampires and mythological creatures. Third, it lured me to be read very quickly, just like a vampire that hypnotises its victims in order to make them do what it wants. I found the writing very fluid, but not too much simple. At first, I wasn't happy with the two main characters, because if they are so powerful, why I should care about them? But then I discovered their weaknesses and I loved the fact that they support each other whenever one of them needs help. I can't say I totally cheered for them, and yet I found them very "human" when it came to feelings and doubts. I didn't find a single character that was written in a mono-dimensional way, and yet they were not characterised too much. Now I list my favourite parts: 1) The dialogue: “If you have one human/magic parent, and one human/vampire parent, what does that make the child?” “Ours”. I found it very clever in so many ways. 2) The line: "I will haunt you to the end of your days, which we both know will be a very, very long time!" 3) The line: “Kate, you died today. You should get some sleep. The rest can wait until morning.” I admit I smiled a little while reading this. 4) The dialogue: “Marry me?” “Luca, just because I’m pregnant doesn’t mean we have to get married. I’m not expecting anything.” For being a fantasy book set in a time with Queens and Kings, it contains many examples of modernity, which I think it's a good thing. The part I liked the least was Hercules having his family back again. I know that Kate wanted to make the same gift to both Allistair and Hercules, and yet I "saw" Allistair more than Hercules, so I cared more about him than Hercules. In addition, I'm not a fan of the "everything/anything" sentences (“We have to be ready”. “For what?” “Anything.”/ "What's happened?" "Everything") and of this line: “Thhheeerrrre wwwweeeere cccoooommplicaaationssss.” Finally, I noticed tiny mistakes that however didn't distract me at all from the overall reading. To sum up, I genuinely enjoyed this book and nothing that I disliked was able to take away this enjoyment from me!

Thank you so much to the author for sharing an ARC of this book with me!!
“My heart will always belong to you. Only you.”
“Come home, Kate. Come home to me.”
Second instalment in the Frostbite series. When I started reading, I didn’t know what to expect nor what to think about what was supposed to happen. The only thing I knew for certain, was that I needed to find out what was awaiting Luce from the moment he decided to leave Kate behind and face his father alone. After everything they have been through in book one and again this time around, I think I can safely say that theirs is a relationship I deeply love and appreciate. The respect and devotion they show for one another is beautiful and the spicy scenes made their moments even better !!! I had the feeling that this time around we had more action and drama (which I totally support and like) and the truths they had to face, both alone as individuals and as a couple, despite feeling insurmountable, where amazing to read. I felt engaged in the story from moment one and I was so hooked that I couldn’t put the book down for the life of me. I have to admit that there was not one scene that fell flat in my eyes, and I loved the dynamics between Kate and Alaric, especially considering how we left things off in book one. Dracula seems to be a character you cannot totally identify or put in the right position but I liked the role he played this time around with Luca. Talking about him, he was wonderful and amazing as always. Kate was so good and such an amazing FMC, both for what she does for the people she loves and the things she is ready to sacrifice for them. And that ending … I have to say that those last 100 pages were a constant state of frustration and fear but … I NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOW!!!
“I’ll always want you with me Kate. Always.”
“I’ll do whatever it takes to protect the place that has given me a home. And the woman who loves me.”
This story definitely brought the adventure and tense conflict. Book 2 of the Frostbite series takes the reader deeper into the story of Luca and Kate - and I would definitely recommend reading the first book, since a lot of the action takes place after everything in book 1.
Kate and Luca have separated from each other - after Luca made the decision to go after his father, Dracula, without endangering Kate. Knowing their deep connection to each other, this proves extremely difficult for the two of them. While away from each other, each of them have a lot to overcome. Dracula doesn't make it easy for Luca to find him, and Kate's mission to help Darien to the throne, and ultimately fight a dark magic, exhausts her own magic. There is a darkness that hides, yearning to break free and take over - all while trying to gain Kate's powers - and it seems like Kate may not be strong enough to fight. But Kate and Luca's love is magic as well, and the two of them stop at nothing to get what they want.
This sequel carries the same intensity, as the first. The battles that Kate faces are overwhelming and almost heartstopping. I love the storyline of Dracula and Luca, especially when Luca is hunting him down. I was hoping for a little more of this storyline than what is given as I love anything Vampire, but I was still emotionally involved. The fantasy side to this story is so fun and Troy gives us the much needed action and adventure. There is also the love story, but it doesn't overdo it, giving us just enough to remember why Luca and Kate are together.
The ending promises the possibility of another book, so I hope we get it soon. I definitely recommend for fans of magical fantasy and romance.
Dreams of Ice and Shadow is the perfect continuation of a Vision in Crimson written by Kathryn Troy. In this book she continues the adventure of Luca and Kate. The author develops an interesting plot that keeps you reading on and makes it difficult to put the book down. There are a few twists that are nicely developed that fit well into the story. The pace is perfect and guides you beautifully through the story. There was never a dull moment nor did the author ever rush you through it. There was a point that was maybe a tad confusing during the resurrection part, but other than that this book was very well written.
Luca is just a woman's dream and is what a "man" should be like. Yes he is fictional but he is just a dream come true in his caring nature. Kate is a very strong and independent woman but she learns that it doesn't mean that she can't let him in. She soon learns that one can be strong yet also depend on someone else, that these don't have to be mutually exclusive. Their relationship has some hiccups here and there which gives it a realistic feel to it, and doesn't make it all perfect and like a fairy tale.
I really enjoyed reading this book a lot. It is quite different from your usual vampire story and includes a lot of magic, but it is also not your usual book about magic either. I can only recommend this book to fellow lovers of the paranormal who also like a good romance.
Voluntary review of Advance Reader Copy. I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher.
✨✨✨✨✨✨ When I got this book I seriously could not wait to dive in. It’s been a minute since I’ve read a vampire MMC and wow did it put me in such a mood for more!! I adore the respect, devotion and love that Kate and Luca had for each other was truly epic! This gave me the exact type of emotions I love feeling throughout fantasy books! The amount of action and drama had me gasping and in fear at points. You get great writing where you can just picture it perfectly. I don’t want to give too much away because you just need to dive in yourself for the experience!
With the way this one ended I seriously can’t wait for the next book! Kathryn Troy has become one of my newest fav fantasy writers!

✨What’s the last fantasy book you’ve read? If not what are you currently reading?
𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐰 is the second book in the Frostbite series by Kathryn Troy, continuing the paranormal romantic fantasy saga of Kate and Luca. As Kate’s powers intensify and the threats come at them from multiple angles and situations, Luca may be be forced to do the one thing he never wanted to do… turn Kate with his bite in order to save her life.
This installment was full of beautiful imagery, complex plotlines, violent battles, shadow magic, mystical creatures, and plenty of spicy chemistry with our hybrid vampire and witchy couple from the first book! I got a little lost at times between the intense dream sequences and the different lands with multiple characters with unique names, but I eventually figured things out and enjoyed all the twists and turns, bad- a$$ery, and a couple surprises that had me emotional! I really loved how strong Kate was, yet she was even stronger with Luca by her side. The way he finally finds true acceptance with her and her people was one of my favorite themes. There’s plenty of drama yet to be sorted out, though. With the way things were left, I look forward to the next book!
I received an ARC for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Rating: 4/5 I received an eARC for my honest opinion.
This is the second book of the Frostbite series, and book 2 did not let me down. I really liked that the author dived deeper into the characters of this book. You will be able to really understand them more. You will still see the action and drama that the first book had but there is more to it in this book. The twists and turns that the author took to make sure that this book still flowed with a fast pace and was easy to keep up with. You will find vampires, and other mythological creatures. You will see romance, independence, strength and compassion.
I really loved that the author gave you more in-depth knowledge about the characters in this book and you get to see more character development in this book. Not just from the main characters but the side ones as well. I really enjoyed getting to learn more about Kate and Luca and seeing how their love was so strong, and they trusted each other and still know that they can lean on each other even when they’re apart from each other. Kate is helping her nephew ascend the throne and giving him her support, while Luke is out on the hunt for his father. Luca only has one thing on his mind other than Kate and that is to destroy the one that created him. You will watch the characters in this book have challenges and problems, but you will also see them work out their issues and that is what really helped me to connect to the characters.
This book is perfect for readers that enjoy complex fantasy, with bloodshed, action, magic, magical creatures, romance and character development.
I want to thank Kathryn Troy for the opportunity to review this book.
Kate and luca are back and facing even more drama. They have gone their separate ways temporarily. Kate helping the new seht to take over the thrown and Luca is hunting down Dracula his father. But time and space only makes them weaker and soon they are back together and even stronger than before. From helping bring back lost loved ones to bringing a pegasus foal into the world together they are able to bring out the magic and strength in each other. I really liked this book! The transition between book 1 and 2 was a little choppy to me but it has also been a long time since I read the first one so it’s possible I’m just not remembering how the first ended. The world created within the pages is great! All the different creatures from witches to vampires and pegasus to all manners of magical creatures. We even get to see Hercules and his family! The surprise at the end is one that either you will love or hate but I don’t really consider it a cliffhanger per se.. but the glimpse into book 3 now that has me on edge .
The second book in this series was amazing!! Honestly, it did take me a bit to remember what happened in book one, but once I did, I was completely entranced. Luca, a dhampir, is trying to hunt down his father, Dracula, before he kills anymore innocents, and he sends Kate away to keep her safe. Kate, upset about this, decides to help with the issue with her nephew Darian and everything going on over there. Something is conjuring evil, and she is determined to stop it.
Then she decides to make good on her promise to her other nephew to bring back his mother along with some others who died. This is very dangerous magic, but Luca is able to help her through it.
But, unbeknownst to them, Dracula has been playing the long game with magic of Kate’s that he shouldn’t have… and the biggest danger of all is about to face them and everyone in their kingdom!
This book was SOOOO amazing and I absolutely loved it. Dare I say that the last chapter makes it out that there might be a 3rd book coming??? I hope so
Luca is trying to tackle his father and it is to him the perfect time as Katelyn is across the sea at the slave city of Likhan trying to support her nephew Darien ascend to the throne there and stop impending revolutionary chaos. Can the eternal lovers get back together or will they both fail with their own struggles? There is also danger in the form of Alaric who while helping Kate in Likham is also determined to win Kate back from Luca. Can they both survive the dreams of ice and shadow and save both themselves and the land of Icarya?
I loved this story which was a very complex fantasy with little bits of horror interspersed in places. I loved the strong love and relationship between Kate and Luca that was explored in some fairly detailed character development. There were plenty of twists and tuns which meant you could never assume anything. Well written it was an easy read and quite addictive.
A stunningly written edition to the series. It leaves off right from the first one so there's no catching up and you can just straight into it. The details are so descriptive and lead the story on nicely. The cover art is but as beautiful as the story. Every detail is so thought out and put together perfectly, I love Kate and Lucas characters together and the ways they handle things within the kingdom. It was nice seeing the different parts and people within icarya in this book and the different places the story led. There was a few storylines happening that all tied together and I liked the way it is written. There was alot of closure in this part and I loved the way some of the backstory was layer out with kates memories. I think there's still alot left to happen and unanswered questions and I feel like something is just beginning, I really want Kate to have a chance to know her true history.
I can't say I hated this book, but at times I struggled to get through it. The characters lacked depth, there were some confusing spots and the book seemed a bit rushed as far as the storyline. I'm honestly not sure how I felt about any of the characters but I do know I was not invested in them. I tend to enjoy books more when the characters live in my head and have colour, depth, personality - in other words - when I can feel them, their emotions, their thoughts.
I do enjoy this author - so I say give it a try - may be just the book for you. The writing style is good. And, maybe this review read just fell at a time when I was not able to really enjoy the book (hurricanes, hurricane clean up and other natural disasters). I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Kathryn Troy never disappoints! This second installment definitely hit in the big leagues. I giggled, I cried (for good reasons) and I cheered. Just WOW!
This part of the story picks up where the previous left off. Kate is off on her own in another kingdom assisting the rise of the new Seht while Luca is off on his pursuit of his murderous father, Dracula. While Kate has dealings with an ex-lover and showcases her bad-assery, Luca is getting to know the people that his live rules and earning their trust. With the two issues seemingly dealt with, the lovers reunite for an even more daunting task… bringing lost loved ones back from the dead. Will Luca and Kate be able to save each other or will they be lost to the abyss that is the rabbit hole of memories.
Twists that you won’t see coming and a glorious ending that will have you cheering out loud. Love prevails overall, or does it… Thank you Kathryn Troy for this, now I need more!!!
Dreams of Ice and Shadow is a well-written fast flowing adventure. The descriptions and narration in this story are good and really draw you into the world Troy has created. This tale is an intriguing fusion of Gothic horror, the supernatural and erotica. There are sex scenes in this book – you have been warned! The story revolves around a series of powerful relationships that of lovers, would be lovers, and estranged and lethal family members caught up in a deadly power struggle. Where magic cashes against the immortal powers of Dracula. Unnatural creatures and unknown horrors stalk the world which has been thrown into political chaos, as Darien seeks the throne of Likha following the death of Seht Reza and Likhan is pushed to the edge of civil war. Kate rushes to support her nephew while her lover Luca hunts the deadly Dracula. Purely, on a matter of personal reading taste, I would have liked more battle and fight scenes. I recommend this to lovers of fantasy, supernatural, and erotica.
Tropes: Touch her and ☠️, Brooding Vampire MMC 🧛, Witchy FMC, Rival Lovers 🩶, 🩸magic, Threats to the crown 👑, magical beasts, royalty 👸 Can Luca and Kate weather the storm? “My Heart will always belong to you and only you” I could not wait to get back to the story of Kate and Luca and this book did not disappoint. I felt all the feels when Luca left Kate to go after his father alone, after all he was trying to protect his love. They need to be together, he needs to be rid of his father. Kate’s powers intensify,Alaric wants a second chance, will Luca have todo the one thing he told Kate he didn’t want to do? Will Alaric get his second chance? This book had me feeling ALL. THE. FEELS. I love everything about this book and urge you to read it. I promise you will not be disappointed! Kathryn does an excellent job storytelling and keeping you in a chokehold 😅
I had high hopes for this book, especially since I felt book one had a lot of potential. But I’m sad to say it was lacking just as much as the first one. The writing style of these books appears to be all over the place. Chapter 16 I had such a hard time because I couldn’t tell what was memory, what was real, if we just kept going from memory to memory. It was very confusing and unfortunately, my interest never returned after. It did turn out that that was just a series of memories she was having to go through, but it wasn’t explicitly stated when they first started, and I just couldn’t get back into it after that. The ending felt very rushed with the “shadow Kate” at the end and with Luca’s father at the end.
***ARC REVIEW*** Name: Dream of Ice and Shadow Author: Kathryn Troy Rate: 4 🌟
~Dreams of Ice and Shadow is book 2 of the Frostbite series written by Kathryn Troy! Here we continue the story with Luca and Kate. They are both on their own mission but later come together and become strong. Luca still hates his father and is still looking to murder him! The storyline is okay. I still felt a bit lost on who was speaking at times!!! But then the plot was good. That kept me wanting to know who? What… and when!!! The ending was cute… I feel that it might be a cliffhanger but not as bad as a thought but yet I could be wrong. This was a decent read! So, readers, if you enjoy reading a dark gothic romantasy then this one is the right one.
In this next installment of the Frostbite series we have Kate and Luca facing more challenges both separately and together. They have both gone their separate ways both in their our quest that they must face without one another. Kate is helping with the new seht to take the throne while Luca sets out to find and destroy his father Dracula once and for all.
Unfortunately for Luca, Dracula is always a few steps ahead of him and has a few tricks up his sleeve.
This story was better than book 1 because it had more world building, monsters, violence, plot twists and more. Reading both Kate and Luca’s adventures was like reading two separate stories that joined together into one epic adventure/battle.
A deadly hunt. A creeping curse. A broken promise made in blood.
Troy really brought the heat with this second installment in the Frostbite Series!!
- A Steamy Romance - Political Alliances - Mûrdêr - Dark Magic
Katelyn & Luca seem to be fighting their own battles this time, but their love helps keeps them connected even through dire situations.
Troy's writing style took me a while to get used to, but after reading A Vision In Crimson, I was prepared and I ended up really liking how her style fit this story!
The action in this book was non stop, I was actually finding myself wanting Katelyn and Luca to catch a break 😂😂
My favorite character was Alaric! I'm really hoping to see more of him as this series continues.
Ehh? So a lot of the same complaints I had about the first book in this series (rushed, not connecting to characters) are still an issue for me in Dreams of Ice and Shadow. We did get more of Kate in this sequel, but I'm still having trouble relating to her? I'm not getting much depth there. Maybe it's just me 🤷🏼♀️
I was really looking forward to the showdown with Dracula, but honestly he was almost a side note in the story, which was disappointing. He didn't live up to the *big bad* energy I felt he had in Book 1. Due to my lack of interest at this point in the series, I probably won't be looking for Book 3.
I do want to thank the author though for the opportunity to read and review!
Definitely recommend reading the first book, A Vision in Crimson, first. This one vividly carries on the story, delving deep into the Narnia-like world, the dangers posed by Dracula's invasion, and new shadowy enemies. The romance and relationship between Kate and Luca continues to be intense and spicy, and we learn more about Kate's past and erratic powers. If you like dark romantasy (Sarah J. Maas, Deborah Harkness, etc.) or are ready for a very adult Narnia, this is for you! Looking forward to the third!
Received e-ARC for review from the author; all opinions my own.
In Dreams of Ice and Shadows, Luca and Kate are faced with a crisis that tests their limits and their bond. Write a scene where Luca is grappling with the decision to undertake a dangerous and morally ambiguous action to resolve the issue they are facing. Show how this decision affects his relationship with Kate and reveals deeper aspects of his character. Incorporate elements from their past that add emotional weight to the situation, and explore Kate’s reaction as she learns about Luca’s internal struggle.
