Old Enemies, New Problems: Being Memoirs by Clorinda Cathcart, (that was a Lady of the Town for some several years, and is now elevat'd to aristocratick rank)
Following her very brief marriage to Lord R-‘s friend the Marquess of B-, Clorinda is now the Dowager Marchioness of B-. While constrained by the formalities of mourning, she is becoming accepted in Society through her own ventures into philanthropy and the patronage of Lady J-. She remains the beloved third of Mr and Mrs F-. She takes up her pen again during a trip to her late husband’s villa near Naples in company with Lord R- and Mr MacD‑.
I needed a gentle, soothing sort of book to follow The Fifth Season, and the fourth volume of the Comfortable Courtesan series was the perfect choice. In this book, Clorinda's period of mourning for the late Marquess of B- has ended and she is really be able to begin her new life, no longer Madame C- the courtesan but the Dowager Marchioness of B-. This volume charts the development of a new set of female friendships, as she makes the acquaintance of the wives of many of the men of her acquaintance, and sets Clorinda firmly in the centre of her social group as the person who everyone brings their troubles to and who can always see the most elegant solution to any problem. Given that the wise friend who sorts out everybody's troubles is one of my favourite character types (Jeeves is obvously the best example, after Clorinda, but I even have a soft spot for Joey Maynard when she does it), it's no wonder I adore this series.
I think this is my very favourite of the series - I just love seeing the friendship growing even deeper and more comfortable between Clorinda, Sandy and Milord, and watching Clorinda's relationship with the Fs develop and grow. The narration remains so funny and charming and sweet - and it's nice to see Clorinda a little more able to speak her mind and make sharp remarks when she needs to! The snark between her and Sandy is delightful as ever.
