Soldiers of Callisto

Rate this book
Tancred goes into battle in the skies of Callisto ...

... while Jay fights through a watery hell on the surface.

Finally given a chance to join the war against the Offense, Jay Scattergood's young Void Dragon, Tancred, struggles to prove himself against alien space fighters. Callisto is now an ocean world orbiting the new star of Jupiter, where humanity and the Offense maneuver mighty fleets of battle rafts against one another. Jay and his friend Francie have a mission: to interdict the Offense's supply lines.

But on an ocean world, the lines of battle are fluid. An enemy attack plunges Jay and Francie into the epicenter of a lethal sea battle. Can their Void Dragons save them on a world covered with water?

Under the seas of Callisto, a challenge to the Void Dragons is approaching, silent and deadly.

Soldiers of Callisto is the third book in a new military sci-fi series starring the Void Dragons, a race of space dragons who eat stars. Felix R. Savage writes hard science fiction, space opera, and comedic science fiction. He has also occasionally been known to commit fantasy.

Felix has a long history associated with rebellion. He was born in the 1970s, a decade of American youth rebelling against the safe culture of their parents. He is married to a wonderful woman and they have two beautiful daughters. Together the four of them live in Tokyo serving their cat overlord and benevolent protector. Felix pounds the keyboard while not translating, delighting in his family, or catering to the whims of the family’s cat. He woke up one day to learn that he was a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, but he continues to keep a low profile, and never stops watching out for any sign the lizard people have found him.

To quote the dragon, "DELICIOUS!"

Jay Scattergood, erstwhile coder and cube farm denizen, has come up in the world of warfare in spite of himself. His Void Dragon, Tancred, is now seen as a potential asset in humanity's losing war against the Offense. Jay and Tancred, along with newly hatched Pinky Pie and former minesweeper Francie, and ex-cavalryman Jeremy with his unhatched egg, are now on water-world Callisto trying to destroy enemy Offense space-ships as they attack. Typically, it doesn't go as planned. The military brass and defense big-wigs don't know enough about dragons to make successful military use of them, and ignorance results not in bliss, but in chaos. What became of the egg-hunt on earth, what becomes of Callisto, and the perils our intrepid band of heroes - human and reptilian - must navigate, makes for a wickedly funny, poignant, and suspenseful story. No Spoilers, but fans of unrequited love, military heroism, adorable dragons, conspiracy theories, and worms that turn are gonna eat this up and demand MORE!! Author Felix R. Savage (who kindly gave me this ARC) has pledged to deliver more books in this series. It is my voluntary and independent opinion that Soldiers of Callisto is the best one yet.

This is a brilliant series. Definitely one not to be missed!
When I received this book as a gift from the author, for which I am paying back his kindness and doing this review; I thought, this will likely be as good as the first two books. But boy, was I ever wrong!
This book Soldiers of Callisto is way more exciting and dramatic than the previous books! Honestly I was very pleasantly surprised.

Callisto is a water world. No land at all. Imagine fighting on huge rafts in a world of end to end ocean. Then imagine that you are captured by the enemy. Then stranded on a piece of junk to die with no drinkable water and no food or shelter from the ever present baking sunlight...with an infected bite in your arm...with a raging fever, whilst trying to outwit your enemy captors.

Not dramatic enough huh?

Well wait till you read it!
This book has all the excitement of dramatic tension and DRAGONS too!

What more could you ask?
The characters are full of life and the main character is as flawed as one human can get and yet, he's great!

I loved every minute of this book and of this series.

Felix R Savage has a wonderful gift for writing extraordinary SciFi and, I believe, he has a great future ahead of him.

Here be a whole bunch of Dragons!

Act three of the Void Dragon Hunters takes place on Callisto. Having reached Part Three of a Five Part series of novellas, I am impressed by how much like Larry Niven’s The Integral Trees and Ygradisol (I cannot remember the author’s name or the actual title, but the title is based on the Norse Mythology related to Yggdrasil. It was a great read, totally original, and with a lot of solid hard science underpinning it.) When I say “like”, I mean that this is an original and compelling concept that while obviously fiction, carries enough weight to allow the reader to suspend disbelief. Jay Scattergood, and Tancred the Void Dragon, are on Callisto, a planet covered in water to about 130 kilometers, just as the alien “Opposition” launch an overwhelming attack on the small foothold that Earth forces had gained on this moon of Jupiter. This one continues to advance the world building of Felix R. Savage, especially in providing more detail about the Void Dragon eggs and Void Dragon hatchlings. Don’t expect any significant sense of closure with this one, as there are two more novellas to follow.

The author graciously sent me an ARC

Strap on your inter flight harness, because we're off and running (flying?)! Jay Scattergood, our unlikely hero, goes to war to stop the invasion of Jupiter, his "home" world as Earth was eaten by Void Dragons. Yes I did say that. Along with his dragon Tancred, he's fighting the Offense with Francie and her dragon Pinkie Pie plus old and new fighters with their dragons. Desperately trying to keep the Offense Soldiers away from their supply lines on an ocean world, the action kicks in immediately. Danger, suspense, and hilarity ensues, as usual. Book 3 of Savage's Void Dragon Hunters series is captivating in it's own right, but I cannot wait for Book 4! Go get 'em Jay and little scaly butt!

Jay, Tancred and the rest of the gang are back and this time join the war on Callisto. Of course Tancred tries to do what he can to eat the enemy ships but things do not go exactly as planned. Full of a few funny scenes, a few fighting scenes, and void dragons, the story was addicting as usual since I did not know what would happen next. Liked the surprises that popped up. Just a great story to the series. Liked the mystery that popped up too. I loved it as usual. Jay and Tancred are a hoot!

Hooray for Tancredo;,may be always be hungry!

This book was (in my opinion) the best so far. The names of everything are really funny. It doesn't seem like anything yiu
you think is true: isn't. I like Sara, the new edition to the team and now there is going to be a Dragon Space team! I don't think Jay deserved to be Oromo
promoted to Commander; he still seems wimpy to me. Anyway I am ready for the next book!!

Excellent tale that is very well written. It is packed with excitement, adventure and danger. This series is also a whole new way of describing dragons. You definitely do not want to have one angry with you. As with every book written by Mr. Savage, I highly recommend it.

I really, really like this series! The characters are believable, their actions are realistic (in a sci-fi universe), and the plot makes sense. The story is entertaining, and I’m ready for the next book in the series!

Soldiers of Callisto is the 3rd in the series and sees Jay sent off to Callisto with Francie and the Dragons. Patrick and the others are to remain behind and try and find more eggs. Callisto has been turned into a water world with the proximity of the Jupiter Sun, but it is also one of the war zones between the Offense and humanity. Whilst no one side controls the orbital side of things, on the surface, there is a constant battle using these battle barges, and strange ‘water’ trenches. Jay has been sent to see if Tancred can help, with his thirst for Offense engines, he might be able to help bring down supply ships as they race in and drop off supplies.
Jay of course is just happy to be so close to Francie without Patrick around. He is also worried though, knowing that there is still bad things happening with the Military and that there is an undercover plot somewhere, someone feeding information to the Offense and trying to aid the enemy.
Jay and Tancred are still trying to get over their little disagreement in the 2nd book, which nearly saw the Void Dragon lose control and return several times bigger, with the aim of killing Jay and destroying humanity. Of course Jay fixed this, and they are now all happy again, as long as Jay never leaves Tancred behind again (there is a definite element of comedy running very deep through this book – almost Monty Python in its feel)
This is a really fascinating volume, looking at bits of the war close up, with Offense ships dropping in regularly, as well as constant water based battles with the battle barges. So whilst there is the humour, we also get a look at the harsher side of reality and the impact that it is having on Jay and the others. It is an interesting contrast, Jay being the non-Soldier doesn’t cope quite so well, whereas Francie seems to take all the violence and death in her stride – on the surface at least. The Marines that are stationed there are stoic as usual (and somewhat confused by the ‘Genetically modified lizard that chases Jay around – Dragon, what Dragon, it's just a big lizard, nothing to see here, move along’….
This is a Mil-Sci-Fi story, with a large element of humour, exceptionally well researched and with well written technical sci-fi (all the stuff about moving Earth, transforming Jupiter into a Sun, the effects on the surrounding planets and planetoids as well as the gravitational impacts), then there are the Offence ships and weapons, as well as the equipment that the humans are using. It all makes for a great read and a lot of fun, what you expect from Savage.
The concept of the Void Dragons is extremely well done, making the book somewhat different to the normal read of this type (not just human’s vs aliens, there are Sun eating Dragons just for something really interesting!).
The Characters are very well done. The story is told from Jay’s inexperienced point of view. He is a code monkey, who was meant to fix a mine sniffing dog and now owns a Pony Sized Void Dragon whose favourite food is the star drives of Offense starships (better than some of the others that like human ships…oooops!!)
There are all the usual characters from the other books, but this time there are some dark and shady characters doing some strange things that create even more mystery, and intrigue to the story, linking to the theory that bad people are leaking intel to the Offense, and that maybe they are after Jay and his Dragon.
Sara Moon is back also, adding a bit more interest from all sorts of angles.
The story is a usual Savage story, you move along at a fairly steady pace and then it is like a scene from Aliens with chaos, people screaming and guns blazing – and it doesn’t end well for a lot of people (especially those that point guns at Jay and his crew, they find out what an unhappy Dragon can do – cue screaming, flames “oh my god we’re all going to arrrggghhhhh’ you get the idea…)
This is a great book 3, we are moving along at a nice pace, building towards a climatic ending, but in a way that you really don’t have any idea of how this is going to end. That is the great thing about Savage, you move along in these great stories, all these plots unfold, fascinating things happen, you know it is leading somewhere, and you might even think you know where, and then you get a 90deg turn and bang you are off in another direction you never expected.
At the end of the day, this was always going to be a good story, a Code Monkey finds a Dragon Egg, gets caught up with a bunch of Marines with no clue what he is doing because of a pretty girl, Egg Hatches, and now Code Monkey is Daddy to Dragon, and is possibly the only chance humanity has. What could go wrong??
This is without a doubt the best series that Savage has written to date, which given the calibre of his other work is saying something. If you're onboard, enjoy! If not – quick, jump in now before you miss the series of the year!!

The plot was a little predictable in this book. I need to continue reading to see what will happen. The new team intrigues me.
