Cassidy Lane

Maria Murnane

The way Maria became an author is a little crazy. She used to work in high-tech PR but hated it, so one day she quit and ended up playing semi-pro soccer in Argentina for a year. While she was down there she decided to write a novel, which was something she'd always dreamed of doing. Fast forward a few years and she's now the best-selling author of Perfect on Paper, It's a Waverly Life, Honey on Your Mind, Chocolate for Two, Cassidy Lane, Katwalk, Wait for the Rain, and Bridges. And yes, she still plays a lot of soccer!

Deserves 1.5 rating.

Cassidy Lane started out cute but then went down hill fast. The heroine, Cassidy, who is an author in NYC has such a self-esteem problem that it grew very grating on the nerves. She constantly second guesses herself and acts more like she is around college age than thirty-eight. She harps on how old she is, how she is single, but isn't good enough for a man. She meets an old school mate at her high school reunion who is a very sweet guy. Brandon thinks the world of Cassidy and goes out of his way to make their long distance relationship work. I guess it's good he doesn't live close enough to Cassidy to see her everyday because he would dump her for being such a sad sack.

Cassidy is a heroine without any "balls" or an engaging personality. Also the story becomes very stale too fast.

Total fail.

RECEIVED BOOK FREE THROUGH GOODREADS FIRST READS.

Enjoyed this book very much. The high school reunion gave me the willies...been there done that...will not do again!!

After my recovery, i read this book in record time. Cassidy Lane is just like us...a woman always hoping for the best, after a rotton relationship. And, it a tad gun shy. Thankfully she has some of the best of friends, a family that loves her and a career to keep her in marshmellows!! I love this woman!

This is a great beach read or a rainy day read. Enjoy.

MY SYNOPSIS

Imagine this: What’s your stance towards high school reunions? Hesitant to attend or eager to show up? The feeling is mixed, for you actually. It’s fun to go see who’s bloated the size of a barnyard, or who became what, and who’s still a bitch. When you are forty, you look out for:

1. Who is recently divorced?
2. Who is had their face done and by whom?
3. Who is close to death, faced by an illness or is aging like a breakup letter received with ire?

Your high school life wasn’t what everyone would wish their high school life would be. You weren’t asked to Prom. You didn’t have the body of a cheerleader. You had crushes on the jocks who didn’t notice you. And even the nerds couldn’t even acknowledge you, because who would like to be a braces-wearing geek anyway? But your best pal wouldn’t let you decide against attending. So you have no option than to face your past, which was much of a blur to everyone else anyway. And hark, you are not only going a successful writer with so many books under your belt, you are going single. There’s a whole look they give to single spinsters at forty in a high school reunion and you would soon find out.

You admit to yourself, you were overreacting a bit. The high school reunion didn’t turn out bad, or great either. The cheerleaders have grown the size of Cindy Crawford’s mole. Jocks that had muscular thighs and legs as long as Lindsay Lohan’s criminal records now have arthritis. Apparently rehabs couldn’t contain the crack junkies. The dorky nerd whose proximity determines the degree of your embarrassment, is still who she is, except she might be a mother of two (equally dorky kids). The school bitch, is still pretty, plastic and divorced. But there’s someone you never noticed, someone whose transformation has taken on a ‘woah’ factor according to everyone. Brandon Forrester.

So what if you get back to New York and everything returns to normal? Your life is as solitary and mundane as ever, being a successful writer and all. Your deadline, as though it isn’t already looming, has been pushed forward. The pressure to produce something that might be your finest to date is daunting. You know reading fan mails are the only perks of your job. But what if you open your inbox one time, and saw Brandon Forrester, an email from him. With your deadline, you can’t afford to be distracted. It isn’t an option. But what if you reply, and within a twinkling, he does back? Then the messages keep piling, and piling. Can a long distance relationship work, you begin asking yourself. And even if it can, perhaps, can you rewrite your entire high school life and get back the happy ending you missed out on when no one asked you for prom?

Cassidy Lane’s life summed up for your delight!

MY REVIEW

The story-line of this book is a winner. Reunions, forty year olds, life after high school, spinsterhood. Perfect! I mean, who hasn’t wanted to find out what their high school mates have become after over twenty years. Another reason to be nuts for Murnane’s settings.──★

Everyone wants to write full-time these days, a few people have accomplished that. So the appeal this story would hold to all the wannabe full-timers, shouldn’t be debatable. Not only wannabe writers per se, on odd days who wouldn’t wish they had their work right at home. The perks are that perky. The trip to the fridge is short, you have no boss looming around to call on your mistakes, and perhaps no one to monitor if your emails are work-related, no one to tell you when you can leave work and when to actually work at work. To create a character like Cassidy who’s very relatable──on the outside appears very successful, an equation we give to all full-timers, but behind closed doors not really feel like the million-dollar book deal she is, is what would draw in readers to pick this title.──★★

The in-depth view into Cassidy’s life would also win another star from me. The thing about writing what you know really comes into play for Maria Murnane here. It’s an insightful take on what really goes on behind the pastel chick-lit covers. The struggle to stay focused, the editors who keep pushing forward the deadlines, the writers’ workshops you are invited to speak at with the pressure of what to give away and what-not-to-tell, the fear of losing your fans if you ditch the ‘walk into the sunset’ endings for a more realistic one, the fight to stay inspired always around everyone and everywhere. This book puts down the notion that after signing a book deal with a big, big Traditional Publishing house, all is roses. Perhaps the most annoying feature into that aspect of a full-time writer’s life would be the fact that, whatever happens, whatever masterpiece you create, you are always, always going to be among the D-List of celebrities (when even shits like the Jersey Shore cast are proportioning to incredible levels).──★★★

I had some fav characters that made reading this book fun. Danielle and Patti, the kickass friends, were the stars of this book. Brandon Forrester was also one of the characters I constantly looked forward to reading about. I wish like him (and me of course) all men knew women hated mixed signals and men who keep them thinking on their feet for meaning to their words.──★★★★

The humor is subtle. I loved Cassidy’s voice, very insightful, very without-the-fluff (which is basically saying, very forty). And it has been very well established I love Older Women Books.──★★★★★

The suspense in this book is very unsettling. One feature that got me glued to this book. I wanted to find out what would happen, and perhaps test its predictability. But Maria Murnane never made her plot stand out like a skanky see-through top, it was all fed at a read, no prescience by me could figure the turn of events. But thinking of it, that’s just life. A feature about this book that makes it very realistic. I wished though, it wasn’t that rigid. I wish it was a bit predictable enough for me not to slash one of its stars into a half.──★★★★★★

I recommend this book to anyone who loves their women’s fiction very real. Anyone who wants anything that’s not easy to predict at all. Anyone who loves their Women’s fiction with ample romance to keep them glued. Anyone who has always wondered what goes behind closed doors of very successful authors should also pick up this title.

I liked that the main character is a book author. That was interesting to see. However she is so immature and insecure, I couldnt bear her. Also I dont really understand the plot. It is just lots of disconnected scenes for me. No real story arch. I didnt like it.

Read straight through. I thought this was going to be a 3 star book for me, but I'm still thinking about it this AM, so I'm going to upgrade it. Cassidy's insecurities and self doubt almost were too much for me, but it's not because it wasn't realistic. Do we get annoyed when people are insecure? Sure - but deep down it's probably because we relate in some way or another. Second guessing herself and replaying conversations to analyze where they went wrong - who hasn't done that at a time or another? I would have loved an epilogue, but I know the absence of one was on purpose. I could share more about Cassidy's development at the end, but I don't want to have to mark this with a spoiler.

Scenes with heat... None

The back story... The H goes to her 20th class reunion and is immediately attracted to an old school mate. They start talking/texting even though they live on opposite coasts.

Romance or Gist: The lack of chemistry plus communication on anything but a surface level killed the story for me as much as the extreme angst. The H seemingly had little to no interest throughout the entire story and the h appeared desperate for a relationship.

The drama explosion... None really
Did it feel Real, OK or contrived? n/a
Was it OTT? n/a
Separation involved? Throughout the entire story
Was it resolved properly or rushed? To be continued yet it doesn't have a second book.

Final Notes... The MCs were polar opposites. The H had some interest but it was on a 1 out of 10 level and was mostly business when talking to the h. The h was desperate for the relationship and was willing to be the best doormat ever. Her friends gave the H the benefit of the doubt and even seemed to gaslight the h into believing that she was the problem.

The story ends with the H calling the h. No words, just the end.

HEA or HFN? To be continued but never was.

I read this book thinking" hey i am heading to my 20th reunion early".
also in california.
i really liked the story of Cassidy!
maybe because i can relate to it.
yet
i am relieved that i am way past the high school reunion
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She has an awesome life in New York.
She is a successful writer.

It is a wonderful story of falling in love in the modern day through text message love notes.

It shows a little bit of the reality of how the scene is in late 30's.
her mindset improves throughout the story.
Cassidy has the support of some wonderful friends(what amazing characters)
and some unforgettable fans.

Moral of the story:
you gotta be happy with the wonderful things you already have going on in your life.
and living is celebrating that.

i love how she finds a victory in the midst of a break up.

"break up by text message doesn't count" waverly
I found myself feeling very healed reading this story

tracing back the past we can feel sad
of what could have, would have, and should have.....
as you will see in cassidy's case she has a lot of wonderful things going on!
as i am sure you do( the reader)

i recommend this book to the realist.
the realist who can read this and think i dream my dream but just do it!
a dream can become a reality
this is my 7th book by this author
and i have to say
i love how maria murnane has grown as a writer=rockstar!

This book is a "2015 International Book Awards Winner in Fiction: Chick Lit/Women’s Lit". I do not fall into that demographic, so take my review with a grain of salt.

The heroine of the story, Cassidy, is a romance writer who is 38 and single, but meets *the man of her dreams* at a 20 year high school reunion. Romance blossoms, but due to the tyranny of distance (one lives in NY the other in California) the spark is lost.

Without giving away too many spoilers here, the ending was better than I expected with a bit of a *twist*. Wow.

But as I said I am not a paid up Chick Lit reader, so feel free to ignore my review.

As I was not a popular person myself in high school, I could relate to Cassidy. Reading about her, gave me reassurance that many people share the same fate and they could be happy despite of it.

BUT, and this is a big but, everyone in Cassidy's life tend to talk about her and what happened in her life, not to mention Cassidy herself tends to over-analyze her life, and after half through the book, it become real boring. The conversations also kind of flat and sterile

I can't say that I like this book but this book help me to see my life through different perspective. So, thank you for that, Ms. Murnane

This was a freebie from an author who is new to me. So at more than half way through the book and finding it increasingly hard not to let my thoughts drift, I decided to read a few of the less complimentary reviews. By chance one of them, without warning gave away the ending and in so doing dissolved what little interest I had in completing it. I want a happy ending! No I'm not looking for some pink fluffy childish idea of happily ever after, but I do want the protagonist to find something worthwhile at the end of the journey.

Best selling author Cassidy Lane walks confidently into her twentieth high school reunion, happy that she’s written several novels. However, her love life is nonexistent, and she wishes she could change that. Her chance to do so comes when she bumps into Brandon Forrester at the reunion and he asks her out. Just when she thinks things can’t go wrong, she hits a snag on her latest book, and things aren’t looking promising. Read about her impending (mis) adventures in Cassidy Lane by Maria Murnane.

I enjoyed the premise of this book and it actually kept me guessing as to how it was going to turn out. After reluctantly attending her high school reunion, Cassidy Lane crosses paths with a guy from her past, setting her life on an unexpected path. Throughout the book we watch as friends and random encounters shape the way Cassidy views her own life and how she turns it all into a best selling novel.

3.5⭐

Nggak lebay.

A relatable girl

I've read several books by Murnane now and yet to find a main character I can't relate to. The plot is real enough to be dreamy while still letting me love on my husband at home. I feel just like the protaganist - Happy, successful, and filled.

I liked the new spin on a standard romance and I was glad it was different than all the others. Strong woman character independent and ok. Then the author had to have the man call the woman at the end. Ruins whatever she was trying to say. Wondering if the publisher made her do it.
