Life has not been the same since the attack on the ship. Affected by the Druid's power, something dark lurks within Hadrian Vulmar, threatening the existence of those around him.
Following a lead, Zacriah and Nyah head into the forest on an expedition to cure him. When they are ambushed by the living dead—bodies controlled by shadow—covered in the Druid marks, they know the Druid did not perish in the sea as they first thought. The Druid is back, and with his return comes the threat of attack.
The three known Dragori are sent on a dangerous quest to stop this dark magick before Hadrian gives into his new power, and the shadowbeings end more innocent lives.
Ben Alderson is a #1 Amazon bestselling author. His stories are set in fantasy worlds filled with magic, adventure and MM romance. Ben lives in Oxfordshire and, when not writing, can be found reading, taking Winston - his Labrador - out for long walks, or obsessing over Marvel’s The Scarlet Witch.
I am writing this today because edits are finally DONE! What a massive day! I have worked my little behind off for the past months to try and make this perfect for you all. I really wanted to write a quest style story and finally have. Found in Night follows the drama in book one, and see's our team getting bigger with new friends and old enemies. We meet monsters, creatures and the undead. I can't wait for you all to read this JUNE 12th!
Everyone seems to love this book but sadly, I cannot say the same. This is the second book in Alderson's The Dragori series, the first book was Cloaked in Shadow which I absolutely loved. This second part didn't do its job as well as I was hoping it would.
I find it really hard to write about this book but I'm trying my best here. The main reason why I didn't like this book that much was that it was kinda boring even tho there were lots of action. I just couldn't get into the whole story this time and the characters felt somehow very distant. However, I don't want to give up on the whole series because this second book wasn't as good as I hoped it would be.
In almost every series, the second book is the worst and I really hope that it is also the case with this series. I'm really proud of Ben and I think that this was a solid novel. It was well written and planned but something just was missing. If you liked the first book, you should definitely read this one too and look forward to the third book which will be released in August (I think). I'm super excited about the third book and I hope it will bring some closure into the ending of this book. I warn you, the ending of this one was the worst cliffhanger ever and I'm really really mad about it (sorry not sorry).
I received an E-ARC of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own. I absolutely LOVED this! This series deserves so much more recognition, like I can't recommend it enough. It has diverse characters, an expansive fantasy world, ACTION, ROMANCE... Just... it's so great and the characters (and creatures) are amazing. I love the LGBT representation and can't wait to read more from Ben in the future.
I read the first book and was intrigued enough to continue to this, the next book. I stopped halfway through, the typos were that egregious. In the description of a fight scene it read "serving" a head instead of "severing". A bow was strapped "in his back" instead of "on" and his sword was "wrapped" around his waist. Practically every page had something. I had enough.
Ben has done it again! Found in Night is an enthralling adventure keeping you on the edge of your seat. If you loved the first book then this is a must read!
I love the relationship between the characters and Ben’s writing really makes you feel like you are with them experiencing the same situations they are in. You feel every emotion in this diverse and complex world! It's a must read!
I had to stop this book. The grammatical and spelling errors are too much. I really wanted to enjoy this story due to heavy LGBTQIA+ themes, but the author used the wrong ‘Too and To’, ‘Where and Were”, and “Their and There’ ALL the time in the second book. I stopped and noticed the issues too many times to count. The concepts were interesting, I just wish it was graced with an editor and better writing.
This book was horrible. I enjoyed the first book it was introducing the world and had potential. This book was to predictable, boring, and lacked any emotion. The character development nonexistent and magic was poorly explained. Plot was easy to figure out, and main character was lack compassion for the character is downfall making unloveable.
I read the first book in this series and didn't love it, but I gave the second one a chance because sometimes new authors will improve their writing style with the second book. Sadly, this was not the case. This book was just too much... of everything. Drama, plot points that make little sense. But also, it feels so rushed that the whole romance is coming off an awful lot like sickly sweet instalove.
I could probably power through the remainder of the book, but honestly, I'm not enjoying it even a little bit. So why bother?
I found too much stuff was happening at the same time and the story felt all over the place. Not sure why but there was something off with the writing and pacing, I had a hard time getting into this book. What I understand was, the M.C is in quest to find a staff to cure Prince Hadrian of heart magic, who is slowly loosing control, he is also trying to stop an evil druid, trying to recruit the fourth Dragori and find a missing king. I will not continue this series, I do not have enough attachment to the characters nor the romantic plot.
I really wanted to like this series, but I just couldn't get past the writing style. The abrupt transitions and inconsistent characterizations and high drama just didn't draw me in.
Alderson is a genius when it comes to pacing. You will be gasping and he waits JUST long enough for you to zone back into peaceful vibes before he'll hit you with another gut punch. The twists never feel like they are for shock value and they feel like they are properly paced out.
This series does lean on a wee bit more "dark" fantasy vibes so def don't read this if you want a story where like everyone lives and there is no sadness. Because so many people die and it feels like no one is ever safe. Even the characters that aren't around for a long time make an impact on you and you will feel for them.
WHY DID I THINK I WOULD GET A HAPPY ENDING? Now it makes so much sense as to why the next book is like 600 pages because we need some RESOLUTION. I am TERRIFIED to learn about who all died in our big ending because idk if I can handle it all.
I don't think I have any actual critiques of this book? Besides pls stop killing my babies and bringing my other babies pain.
FOUND IN NIGHT (The Dragori series #2) • • • ⭐️: 5,0/5 • • 💬: I’ve been truly amazed by how much growth I saw it while reading this sequel. The author did something I didn’t think he could do it, he made this book even better than the first one Showing us his ability to world build in a smart way and the culture and legends inside this new world, also a bunch of new places with incredible descriptions. New characters and old characters coming together, to make this journey even richer than before! Zacriah meets new people that will help him on his new task to help the man he loves and we get to see some amazing fighting scenes and magical outbursts! This sequel promises a lot of things and delivers everything I asked for! The feeling of foreshadowing was something that I could almost taste throughout the entire narrative and oh boy, I was right to be fearing the ending of this one. THE ANGST IS REAL. loved meeting new characters that they weren’t just there, they are in the story with a purpose! Jasrov, Emmaline...Nyah is my new favorite character because she finally showed us the badass warrior we all knew she was and because she’s just an amazing friend. Loyalty is something that everyone seek in this book and she was one of the people they all could trust, as well as Zacriah. Hadrian had his role in this one and basically is facing the consequences of what happened while he was with the Druid last time, painful consequences! His bits were the ones where I basically could taste the angst coming and was basically dying (lol)...Oh! And I LOVED EMMALINE! She’s fierce and she is so magical, I loved how complex she is. She reminded me a little bit of Zacriah because of her sensitive personality and sense of justice! I’m dying to see more of her! Regarding the writing, I think the author outdid himself and I was amazed by how hypnotizing the narrative is and how the words just flows into your head without effort. It comes so naturally and at the same time it has an intricate style so I enjoyed so freaking much!
The main character’s surname is spelled wrong during the whole book and that’s all you need to know about the care and professionalism spent on this book.
Definitely not as strong as the first book. This is a typical case of middle book slump. I felt there were a lot of distractions in this book for the main characters that took them from the main quest. It felt that the staff was introduced too early and there wasn’t enough urgency to get it when their literal goddess told them about it. Zacriah and Hadrian’s relationship was also somewhat stalled in this story as they were separated for quite a bit of it. While the middle of the book was a bit slow, the big reveal at the end was worth it and got me excited to continue the series.
GAY ELVES!? THAT RIDE GRIFFINS!? PLEASE AND THANK YOU!!!! I have not been so deeply engrossed in a world in years. A truly magical place for queer characters and readers alike to exist to their fullest and happiest selves. P.S. The entire internet owes Tiv money, I don't make the rules.
This book is clearly YA & it suffers greatly from the usual tropes of that genre. Mostly, that it's illogical.
The author chose to write a story about FOUR individuals with similar powers, neither is stronger than the other, they simply command different elements... so, they're ALL equally as important to the story, yet the author tries so damned hard to make Zacriah the main character, even though it makes NO sense whatsoever for the story being told.
This series needed to be multiple POVs & Zacriah could've been the main focus in the first book as he was coming to terms with his hitherto hidden powers, but I still don't understand why we only get his POV & the other Dragori are treated like secondary characters when they are all as necessary to move the story along as Zacriah is 🤷♀️
I said it for the last book & I'll say it again... the Druid was pretending to be Hadrian's dad & was perfectly positioned to use Hadrian for his nefarious purposes, yet he didn’t, even though it's made even more clear in this book that he only really needed one Dragori for his plans & even though he has one of the Dragori firmly under his clutches, somehow Zacriah is the one that needs to release it... WHY?! For what good reason?!? I would've understood if it only took one to find it, but it would've made more sense that it would require all FOUR to release it or even to power it or release it from its tomb.
As it was, it became a moot point as soon as it was released & TBPH, it became unclear as to whether the Druid knew where it was all along & if he did, WHY was all the Keeper charade needed, which again... if only ONE Dragori was required, what's the point of the rest & if all four had been together, then only one needed to step forward, yet they both did, even though only one asked the right question & if they'd both asked the wrong question, then crickets... 😵💫😵💫 & even though it was the Keeper of the Staff, whose only purpose is to lead the Dragori (plural) to the Staff, they're out here offering multiple option questions completely unrelated to their purpose for existing. Also, being all subliminal about its location, which ends up being, exactly where you expect it to be, but that like most things in this book... MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE as the whole purpose to the subterfuge is that they're trying to keep it AWAY from Druids hands 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Honestly, I struggled to find ANY plotline in this book that made a lick of sense.
As I stated previously, the author bent over backwards to make Zacriah the main character, when he's on equal footing with the other 3, yet the other 3 do feel superfluous even though they're (allegedly) as important & as powerful as he is, in fact more so, as they've honed their powers throughout the years & know more about the lore than he does.
One of the reasons why I disliked this book more than the previous one is that Hadrian is too much of a background character in this book, when he's the most interesting one out this pairing.
It's hard to believe that both Hadrian & Zacriah are the same age, when Zacriah is so incredibly immature, especially when compared to Hadrian.
Same goes for Emmaline, she's also incredibly mature, but then the 4th Dragori is even more childish than Zacriah... so, it's kinda all over the place. Two adults & two children for balance, I guess 🤷♀️
The reason for Emmaline's bitchiness is never fully explained nor does it really make any sense whatsoever, as the only explanation we get specifically refers to their quest, yet she was a grade A bitch from the start of the book...
Also, WHY would they use her with Hadrian when they had no bond of any kind & she'd avoided them both like the plague after the fight on the ship?!? 🤔 MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!
Which, honestly is the biggest issue with this series.... not much makes sense!
We have a Queen who is incredibly short-sighted, who tries to command people who are NOT her subjects & even when the author becomes a bit self-aware of that fact, he persists with that particular storyline, even though it makes no sense.
Nyah, Hadrian (especially) & Zacriah are NOT her subjects... she cannot stop them leaving, yet she keeps bossing them around & telling them what they can't do & that they need to help her people, that she needs the Dragori to keep her subjects safe... when HELLO, did we all just forget Thessalonya?! What about Hadrian's people, what about Zacriah's parents... what's happening/happened in Thessalonya?! No one knows & no one seems to care 🤦♀️
The author is honestly asking for far too much with some of his chosen plotlines. There's suspension of belief & there's whatever is going on in this book!
Am I honestly, expected to believe that the whole kingdom know that the 4th Dragori was evicted from her village, yet no one knew who she was related to?! Especially when they allegedly look like twins?! Now, I kinda cottoned on to that connection during a conversation at the start of the book, yet I discounted it as it wouldn't make sense that others wouldn't know... & there was a point where it was kinda implied that they WERE twins, which makes even less sense, because there's no way that ANYONE would give an 18 year old such a prominent position...
Also, if they were THAT concerned with their relative, WHY would they leave them behind with strangers, especially knowing how much their people distrust the Dragori... again, MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!
Quite a few of the most nonsensical issues surrounding their ages would've been resolved by making them older or even for there to have been a considerable passage of time from the last book to this one, where they were at least 22 or something.
As an example, there are mere weeks between the start of this book & the ending of the previous one, yet, at start, especially, Zacriah comes across as a really arrogant sod, who kinda thinks he's royalty rather than he's simply dating one. It's been mere months from when he was a simple country bumpkin who knew nothing about the world, yet he expects everyone to bow down to him & that his word is law 🤦♀️ Child...just no!
& can we talk about his anger management issues 😬
Now, I don't know whether this book was rushed out & that's why there are so many plotholes or illogical plotlines, like Zacriah failing to use the connection to Nyah as soon as he saw that shit was hitting the fan... but also, WHY was the only non-fighter their welcoming committee 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
This author tries to pull a JK Rowling & killing everyone, but that particular death was senseless.
So, all in all... the storyline is more inane than a cohesive second installment to a series. A lot of the characters's motivations & actions are illogical &/or downright bizarre. Very little makes sense & none of the characters seem to learn from their mistakes... I'm looking at you Zacriah...
& Lordy, his self-pitying spiel was getting tiresome. He NEVER thinks anything through & naturally, actions have consequences... & he's forever in this "it's all my fault" pity party that becomes really grating. He's forever getting other people into dangerous scrapes because he's irrational & immature, yet he never learns & does the same thing over & over again 🤦♀️🤦♀️
So, all in all... although it may seem like it, I didn't hate it... but I can't say that I loved it or even enjoyed it that much either 🤷♀️
Obvious portions cut out without the gap being smoothed over (example- example 192 and 222)
There were also a lot of awkward and fragmented sentences that just didn't make sense nor flow properly. It was jarring and pulled me out of the experience abruptly.
Again, I mainly blame the publishing company for this because that is what they are there for: to proofread and provide developmental feedback to an author's book to ensure it's ready for publishing.
Hopefully, in the next book it'll be better, but I don't have my hopes set too high.
Final Thoughts In every series I've read, the second book is the worst. It's either boring or filler leading into the third, and that's what Found in Night was ultimately.
But it wasn't bad. I still enjoyed the book. The characters and the world and captivating and it pulls me in. I'm thoroughly enjoying the Dragori series and am looking forward to read the next book.
Another solid book from Ben! This series is definitely gearing up to be one of my favorites of all time. The pacing was well done and I never felt that it was rushed, and it built up to this shocker of a twist. Though, I shouldn't be surprised since the first book had a shocking twist as well.
I loved seeing Zacriah start to grow as a character and see him fight for Hadrian. I loved seeing their love story progress and see it come under strain. I loved meeting more characters and developing old ones.
While I did love the pace, I did feel like there were instances where we could have not had certain scenes where they were just camping and included the knowledge elsewhere. But, it is the second book to a trilogy and setting up for the final book in the trilogy is a difficult task and I can see where things will lead from the bread crumbs Ben has left for the reader.
What happened with the book?! I'm so so disappointed, it's like it s written by totally different person.
It was boring, cliche, with unimaginative dialogs, one dimensional characters. I didn't feel chemistry between main protagonist. I was constantly rolling my eyes, that i was afraid that they will permanently stuck . There wasn't any growth, nothing new like in the first book, plot was so bad, and don't let me start with the end. I just want to know how will author get out from that black hole of bad writing? In the and it was just ridiculous how bad the book was, they were rescued by the six year old, again six year old.
I don't think that I will read book three. It was torture to read.
Why did Jasrov have to die? He was so cute and innocent. 😭
Can I just say, thank you, Ben, for including an asexual character. This is the first time that I’ve ever read a book with a character that has the same sexuality as me and it made me feel like I could be accepted and loved for who I am. Reading about Emaline has helped me come out to my mom and to two of my doctors. And now anyone who has read my review will know, too. I’m just so thankful that this book has helped me accept who I am.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I'm finally done. This is the first time in so long it takes me more than a week to finish such a short book. I mean, I liked it but it falls flat next to the first one. The mystery was okey but I had forgotten most of the stuff that happened in Cloaked in Shadow that a small reminder would have been nice. I wasn't expecting the turns but neither was I excited to keep reading. And the typos... gosh no, there were so many 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ Nyah, Jasrov and Emaline stole the book, without a doubt and my heart aches for them 💔
I feel so bad for everything that the prince is going through in this and hope everything works out for the couple in the last book of this trilogy. Can't wait to get my hands on the next one.
