Worlds at War #1

The Dragons of Dunkirk

Rate this book
The year is 1940 on Earth.

It's the Year of Joining on Aerth.

Two worlds are set to collide thanks to the German Reich and their occult research program. WWII is just starting. The Germans are rolling through France and the British are planning to evacuate from Dunkirk. A few of the French Generals are already in Paris considering the quickest and least dangerous path to surrender.

Then it all changes.

The Germans open up a gate to Aerth over Rotterdam and it doesn't go as they plan. Aerth's armies, under guidance of the human wizard Hagirr, march into our world to take it from us.

Soon the war as we know it is over, and the Germans and the Allies are scrambling for solutions to this new problem. A truce is called between the Axis and Allied powers, but nobody told our dead. The dead of WWI rise up to fight on the side of Aerth, and all any living soldier on either side can ask for is to make it to tomorrow.

If you love WWII and Fantasy, you'll love this mashup. It's unlike anything else out there right now.

Expect more in the coming months as the Worlds at War Series progresses through the technological development of WWII, the political treachery of the Nazis, and the resolve of a free people to stay free regardless of what enemy seeks to oppress them.

About the author

Damon Alan

Damon Alan was born in Columbus, IN in 1966. He grew up in different southern Indiana locations, moving many times in his youth. Wherever he went, he was always the geek in the crowd, developing an early love for science fiction and fantasy. An avid fan of early sci-fi on TV, he hungrily consumed what was available and was upset if he couldn’t be Spock on the playground. That’s not doing a good job of staying in character, is it?
After becoming an adult, at least in name, he tried several different paths at college before finally realizing he didn't fit well with that sort of structure. He left school and joined the Air Force to be assigned to Space Command, which sounded much cooler than it probably was. (Although it was cool.) After leaving the Air Force in 1990, he applied to the FAA to be an Air Traffic Controller. In 1992 that became reality, and Damon became an ATC at the Indianapolis Air Route Traffic Control Center.
Retired from ATC now, Damon is pursuing creative writing as a second career, with a growing number of Amazon exclusive novels under his belt. His short stories have been traditionally published in a few places, including the 2018 Gen Con anthology as well as American Mensa’s annual fiction issue in 2016.

I would recommend.

A quick fun read with a good premise. Looking forward to the next installment. I do have a slight problem with the Enfield rifle not being able to penetrate iron plate, but this is the author's world and he sets the rules.

Fans of alternate history, fantasy and military fiction take notice!

This could be the start of a great series. I could almost hear the author, Damon Alan, say "Gotcha" after I started reading.I

It's late May, 1940 and the Allies are being driven towards the beaches of Dunkirk by the seemingly unstoppable German blitzkrieg when . . . A magic portal opens and dragons, dwarves, giants attack to take back the earth. Why they left is another story.

Mr. Alan is skilled at character development and as the plot develops we learn more and more about the principals. He even makes the alien dwarves sympathetic. He remakes a German soldier into a good guy but there is no sympathy for Nazis.

As the magical army enters the Earth so does magic itself with surprising effects. It is also interesting to view the magic vs technology conflict. There are suprizes for humans aliens and readers.

Enjoy!

This is a book in the classical epic fantasy tradition-- a world-shattering conflict told from multiple points of view-- but the stories, rather than being political, are deeply personal. We feel the German operative's political caution, the prophecy-chosen dwarf's insecurity, the British infantryman's yearning for home and safety. The author has clearly done his research, and you see the conflict from the viewpoint of the individual players, rather than our modern sensibilities, and this adds realism to what are literally out-of-this-world events. Although the characters are swept up in events beyond their control, they all work tirelessly to make things better, and there is little of the whining that detracts from so much modern fiction. The result is an uplifting and rewarding read. One warning: it ends on a cliffhanger, but fortunately book 2 is already available.

This series has the potential to be very interesting, but this first book is very much just an introduction to it. It has its own story, but the overall arc is only just getting started by the end. I also found the conflict a bit simplistic, though I do think it could get more interesting in future books. On its own, it wasn't bad. The characters were interesting enough to drive the story along and it was a quick, fun read. 3.5 stars.

Dragons, Nazis, dwarves, zombies, wizards, and British WWII soldiers, this book has it all. I was concerned the story would feel over-the-top, but it held together in a real pager-turner. Mixing fantasy elements with the historical setting of WWII was brilliant. I especially loved Irsu of Iron Mountain. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed The Dragons of Dunkirk, and look forward to the next book in the series.

World War Two fantasy

The Allies and the Nazis had the new enemies, which came from the other world called Aerth.

The UK was ruled by the Queen instead of her father and Churchill was the new Prime Minister in May 1940. That occurred during the Allies evacuation from Dunkirk and then hell broke loose from Rotterdam.

This is fantasy fiction filled with the dwarves, elves and the dragons.

This was a terrific book. It reminded me of another author that is specialized in Alternate History, Harry Turtledove. The story revolves around three principle characters from the different factions of the conflict and gives us a better understanding of the story as it moves along.
Please continue this series as it’s one of a kind in mixing the world of Tolkien and WW2.

Simple read

This was a story in which a gateway opened up between earth and the world of gnomes,Giants Dwarves and other mystical creatures. It follows the path of a squad of British soldiers battling their way to safety.

Truly enjoyed the story and characters. Loved the concept of the religious tie in. Can't wait for more. Can't wait.
