Small-town doctor Katie LeClair is drawn back into an old murder investigation, a mysterious disappearance, and a dark undercurrent of violence.

The idyllic town of Baxter, Michigan, seemed like the perfect place for Dr. Katie LeClair to settle down after years toiling in medical school - until the murder of a patient shattered the peace she had found. But danger arrives just as the town is gearing up for its annual Halloween festival-and once again, this doctor-turned-sleuth will have to unmask a killer in their midst.

Trouble comes in threes this Halloween. Katie sees a new patient who has just been released from prison for a murder he says he didn't commit. Inexplicably, the patient suddenly goes missing. And matters take an even more sinister turn when a college student who had been investigating Katie's old murder case is found dead in the woods near Baxter.

Could Katie's involvement with the case be responsible for the student's violent death? Is her new patient truly a cold-blooded murderer? Is this Halloween about to become a real-life horror show? Katie embarks on a desperate race to find the truth in Do No Harm, the second gripping Dr. Katie LeClair mystery.

A disappearance in a small town, a decade old murder case revisited, and an enigmatic man at the center of it all—Dawn Eastman’s Do No Harm is compulsively readable and absorbing.

I’d almost consider this to be a cross between a cozy mystery and a crime thriller, since it centers around amateur detective and family practitioner Katie Leclair and takes place in a small town with some big murders. This is a fun one, and I think readers will adore Katie as much as I did!

Do No Harm is actually the second in a series featured around Katie LeClair, a family practitioner and recent resident of the small town of Baxter, Michigan. I didn’t read the first book in this series but this one is easily a standalone. Eastman provides plenty of backstory to catch us up, and if it weren’t for the mention of the previous case (aka book), I wouldn’t have realized it was part of a series! That said, it does that frustrating thing where it completely spoiled the first book. I’d still read it, but I already know the who, the why, and the what.

I loved the way Eastman captured the feel of a small town. Every detail she wrote, from the adorable local sandwich shop with the grumpy owner to the town gossip led by Delores reminds the reader that in a town like Baxter, your business will soon become everyone’s business! This felt authentic to me. The way that the town revealed gossip about an investigation that had barely been announced, the way they follow poor Eugene, and the way they pressure Katie into dressing up as a giant pumpkin for the Halloween parade—these elements all added to the cozy feel of the book!

Katie herself is a wonderful character. I’d be shocked if readers disliked her. She is good without being a do-gooder, and inquisitive without being nosy. I loved seeing her blossoming relationship with Matt, her quirky friendship with her brother Caleb, and her competitive but fun best friend Gabrielle. I definitely want to read more about Katie! Though I did find myself wondering how she had so much time to sleuth with such a busy practice…

Finally, let’s talk a bit about the mystery. It centers around two cases—the disappearance of college student Taylor Knox and the return of convicted murderer Eugene. Seemingly unrelated at first, Katie soon begins to wonder whether Eugene’s case might be the reason Taylor went missing—she was investigating the possibility that Eugene was wrongly convicted at the time. I really enjoyed both of these cases. Eugene, though seeming innocent in many ways, also is his own worst enemy. He is awkward at times, and does things that make him seem obsessive. But those qualities don’t necessarily make someone guilty of murder, as Katie reminds us. Taylor is also a wonderful character, for someone who goes missing and is discussed mostly in the third person. I loved learning about her!

I highly recommend this page-turner! Fans of cozies, J. T. Ellison’s series, and Tess Gerritsen will enjoy it!

Thank you to Crooked Lane Books for my copy!

Book two in this series finds Katie helping a young man recently released from prison as well as searching for a college aged woman that was investigating his case before going missing. I didn’t find this book as well done as the first. Katie is a newly minted GP and it continues to beggar belief that she spends so much of her time investigating possible crimes.

I enjoy the characters in this series. Eastman does get the whole small town feel right - the lack of privacy, the constant gossip.

The plot is fairly predictable and I had a feeling where it was going from early on. This is more of a cozy mystery. Fun book but nothing earth shattering.

My thanks to netgalley and Crooked Lane Books for an advance copy of this book.

Do no harm, written by Dawn Eastman, demonstrates the life of a family medicine doctor working in a small town. Dr Katy is adjusting to the town and doing her best for her patients. What patients saying is supposed to be confidential? No harm shows how easy it is to judge a person by their past. And how it is humanly easy to do so when the whole town has already made their opinion. Two different people, yet different not only outside but inside. Status past doesn't matter when seeing a patient.

Eugene Lowe has just returned to his home town after being gone 10 years ... he was in prison for manslaughter. He has always professed his innocence and the town has been split between those who believed he was guilty and those who thought he was innocent.

Within a month after he was released from prison, another girl is found dead ...less than half a mile from where Eugene is living with his mother. The young victim was a college student looking into Eugene's case. Her father was a police officer at the time of the original murder and she was following her father's notes. He, too, believed in Eugene's innocence.

And then a third goes missing, along with her infant daughter.

Eugene is being hassled by local residents and after having been beaten shows up in her clinic. The form a sort-of friendship, but then he goes missing. Is he missing because he knows the police will be after him? Or has something happened to him to keep him away?

Katie and her boyfriend, Matt, and her brother Caleb start looking into the cases of the missing and murdered women. They go back to the very beginning and start looking at interviews, looking for any discrepancy. Katie undertakes a fast and furious race to save the one missing woman before she, too, is killed.

Although this is Book 2, it is easily read as a stand alone. Somewhat suspenseful, it's more of a mystery, and more than a cozy. The characters are solidly defined and unforgettable. The one anomaly I find is that although Katie has no problem jumping in and confronting possible killers, she doesn't have the gumption to face down the lady tyrant who runs the yearly parade in their small town.

Many thanks to the author / Crooked Lane Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of DO NO HARM. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Dr. Katie LeClair is settling in and getting comfortable in Baxter, Michigan. Circumstances in book 1 have left the clinic shorthanded but Katie’s doctor boyfriend is filling in and picking up the slack.

Set in late October we meet Katie’s new patient Eugene Lowe, who has just been released from prison for a murder he still claims he didn’t commit. We also learn a young college student who had previously worked with Katie is missing. Taylor Knox just happened to be researching Lowe’s case for one of her classes when she went missing. After the girl’s body is found Eugene goes missing knowing he will be the prime suspect. Katie believes Eugene didn’t kill Taylor and probably didn’t kill the first woman either, she just has to prove it. With her brother Caleb techy knowledge and skills, she may be able to find the real killer.

I really like Katie LeClair, she is not only strong and smart she is compassionate and caring. She is not quick to judge and strives to get the true facts. Her brother Caleb has her back and is a great sounding board. New boyfriend Matt, also a doctor, wishes she would leave matters to police but knows Katie will not back away from the case so he also helps in any way he can. These characters are realistic and people I would like to know in real life. Ms. Eastman has also created a wonderful cast of secondary characters as well that clearly could be found in any small Midwestern town.

The mystery twists around and connects to Katie in different ways giving her the means to insert herself in key ways to follow up on clues and other information she has uncovered. I particularly enjoyed the way the police chief appreciated Katie’s input. The story had a rapid pace and elements that take this land this in the traditional mystery category. There was suspense in all the rights places and the author takes us on a great journey.

While this story can be read as a stand alone I believe the series should be read in order for maximum enjoyment. There are spoilers in this book if you plan to go back and read Unnatural Causes after reading this book.

Dawn Eastman has a writing style that I really enjoy. This is a great addition to this series.

Dr. Katie LeClair has a new patient at the small Michigan clinic where she practices medicine. Eugene Lowe is fresh out of prison. Ten years ago, he was convicted of murdering Heather Stone. Eugene claims that he is innocent, but people are not happy that he is back in town. Bruises and contusions show that he has recently taken a beating. Since Katie is new to town, she doesn't know the story and starts asking questions about the murder. She is side-tracked when she learns that College Student Taylor Know has disappeared. Katie spoke with Taylor two days ago. Taylor was doing a school project about Heather's murder and Eugene's subsequent conviction. Taylor had questioned many people who were involved in the original investigation. Did she uncover something that led to her disappearance?

Katie is determined to help the police solve the mystery of Taylor's disappearance, and determine whether Eugene really killed Heather Stone. She is helped by her boyfriend, Dr. Matt Gregor, and her brother, Caleb, who is a computer hacker. I liked the mystery, though my mind seemed to wander sometimes while I was listening to it. The narrator, Amanda Dolan, did a fantastic job with the audiobook. My rating: 3.5 Stars.

Dr. Katie LeClair returns in DO NO HARM for another exciting mystery. Her new patient, Eugene, has just returned to town after serving 10 years for manslaughter of a young woman, and he and his mother are being threatened and harassed. Another young woman goes missing. Even though she was reportedly trying to prove his innocence, he comes under suspicion. Enjoyable page-turner!

This is definitely an easy to read quick mystery and even being that its the second in a series doesn't effect how you enjoy it. Dr. Leclair is a very likable character and her honest curiosity draws you into the story with her. It wasn't a difficult or overly thrilling crime, I'd say it's pretty close to a "cozy mystery" type of story but it's a very entertaining, well plotted read.

This is a cute little winter-time book. I’ve heard it say that it’s a warm mystery which is a very good description. It’s interesting enough to keep you going and the plot is decent. I also liked the characters from the two old teachers living together through to our main guy, Eugene.
I can only give it three stars because I never felt any great emotion and it was always put-it-down-able.

Some notes I made while reading Do No Harm.

A bright yellow door to the police station. Wonderful!

Katie is right about the whiskey! Every bottle and glass should have a yuck sticker on it. She sounds just like me - wines and sweet mixed drinks.
Grasshopper anybody?
This whole paragraph sounds like me! I guess I bonded with Katie. And… my little girl poochie is named Katy!

Paranoia versus instinct. Paranoia doesn’t necessarily get you in trouble. Neither does following your instincts.
But consider that instincts have been developed over hundreds of thousands of years, ever since the first humans walked upright on the Earth. The oldest and most valuable instincts concern our safety. Not following them can get you in serious trouble or worse.

Caleb was incredulous that people still used file and cabinets. There are things that I never want to be on the Internet. The Internet is public no matter what you do to make it not so. People are organizations can always, always access anything that is on the Internet.
Paper in your house goes no further than you wanted to. And you can destroy it if you want to. You can never destroy what has gone onto the Internet. Never.

One rather annoying habit of some authors is to refer to a character by their first name and then again by their last name
There are times when it’s warranted. For instants, referring to John when he is in his own home or having a private conversation with Katie and then when he’s referred to at work, calling him Carlson. I guess the author is trying to distinguish the private John Carlson and the public John Carlson but it’s just confusing.
But then again, I appreciate Miss Eastmans little refreshers as you read along and characters pop up again.

Do No Harm isn't the most innovative mystery novel I've ever read, but I found myself enjoying it immensely regardless.

It was only after I started reading that I realized that this is actually the second book in a series featuring the protagonist of Dr. Katie LeClair. Despite the fact that I hadn't read the first book, I wasn't lost or confused at all as Dawn Eastman did a great job of catching the reader up on the events from the previous story.

Dr. LeClair is working in the small Michigan town of Baxter when she starts seeing a new patient, Eugene, who was recently released from prison after serving a sentence for manslaughter. Upon his release, Eugene finds himself being harassed by locals and ultimately finds himself as the prime suspect in the disappearance of another girl who was investigating the case that sent him to prison a decade before. Dr. LeClair sets her sights on figuring out what happened to the missing girl and what, if any, connection Eugene has to both women.

The mystery wraps up in a rather predictable fashion, but I still enjoyed reading along to the inevitable conclusion. I always enjoy the cast of characters that are found in any small town setting and this group of people was no exception. There were plenty of side characters that were fleshed out quite nicely and that added some extra personality to the otherwise relatively basic plot.

I will be going back to read the first book in this series and will more than likely continue if a third is written.

DO NO HARM, the second book in the Dr. Katie LeClair mystery series, is a well written book of suspense and small town life. It can easily be read as a standalone mystery. Eastman does a good job of giving readers plenty of back story without ruining the mystery of the first book in the series. The story is compelling and the pace steady, keeping me glued to the pages, reading the entire book in one sitting.

Small town doctor Katie LeClair finds herself in the middle of an investigation when a local college student goes missing shortly after speaking with Katie. Could her disappearance have anything to do with the paper she was researching about a local murder that happened many years ago? Coincidentally, or maybe not, the man who went to jail for the crime has been paroled and is Katie’s new patient. Is it all tied together?

I like Katie. She is intelligent and resourceful. Her brother Caleb and her love interest Dr. Matt are enjoyable, and the three make a good investigative team. The characters are well developed and engaging. The mystery is interesting, if a little predictable, and satisfying even though the ending feels a little rushed.

I enjoyed DO NO HARM and recommend it to any mystery reader.

Do No Harm by Dawn Eastman is the 2nd in this series however it reads as a stand-alone novel as well as the fact that the author does a great job at giving the backstory so that the reader can follow along. Eugene Lowe has been released from prison after serving 10 years for a manslaughter charge. He goes back to his small hometown to live with his mother. He visits a Dr once home to remove some sutures he had and finds out that she does not know who he is or his past as she is new to the town. Her name is Katie LeClair. Dr. LeClair later finds out that one of her friends/med students had gone missing. Eugene’s name has popped onto the radar because the student was researching Eugene’s murder accusation. Now another body has turned up. Does Eugene have something to hide? This story plays out with the author making it an easy read and is.Gripping the whole time. You will NOT want to put this one down. I cannot understand why others have only given one or two stars but I give it a 5 out of 5.

Thanks to netgalley as well as the author/publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

DO NO HARM is the second in the Dr Le Clair mystery series but my first read. I found it easy to follow as a stand alone but feel having read this in a day, that I will certainly be going back to No. 1 and keeping a look out for future instalments! I loved the whole Jessica Fletcher stance, although in this case a small town Doctor solving a mystery, I kinda figured out the perpetrator so it came as no surprise but it didn’t take away from it. Quick easy read, perfect for those that love a good mystery.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Crooked Lane Books for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

So this is #2 in the series. I really enjoy this amateur detective’s search for the truth. Dr LeClair is not a super hero, not super slick, nor unexplainably brilliant. I enjoy the dynamics between the good doctor and her brother, her boyfriend, her BFF and all of the citizens of the small town. I would easily and happily continue reading some of this authors other books from other series but alas they are too expensive for this obsessive reader. My fingers are crossed that there will be more in this series.

I hadn't read the first in the series but found this one easy to pick up, a more dark version of an amateur sleuth in a cosy setting. The town doctor has recently arrived and is still finding her feet, though she has a brother and a boyfriend of sorts.
I appreciate that the doctor feels concern for a patient who, an ex-con, gets picked on and harmed. But I can't really see why she goes around sleuthing on his behalf. Still, she does, wondering if maybe he didn't attack that girl all those years ago, when another college female student is attacked as soon as he reappears. Some of us would leave it to the police.
I liked the story and sense of danger, the local gossipy knowledge and autumnal setting. I am certain that a college professor would not hand over a student's course assignment papers - and don't they all submit by e-mail today? - to the town doctor, when he hasn't even read and marked it. That's what keeps him in a job. So I can't give this five stars but it's a darn good effort and I'll look out for more in the series.
I downloaded an e-ARC from Fresh Fiction. This is an unbiased review.

Do No Harm
Dr. Katie LeClair. Book #2
Dawn Eastman
5 Stars

Synopsis:

Readers of J. T. Ellison and Tess Gerritsen will be enthralled by Do No Harm, by real-life small-town doctor and national bestselling author Dawn Eastman.

Small-town doctor Katie LeClair is drawn back into an old murder investigation, a mysterious disappearance, and a dark undercurrent of violence.

The idyllic town of Baxter, Michigan, seemed like the perfect place for Dr. Katie LeClair to settle down after years toiling in medical school—until the murder of a patient shattered the peace she had found. Now on the mend and balancing the responsibilities of a new house and the joys of a new romance, Katie is finally ready to start enjoying life. But danger arrives just as the town is gearing up for its annual Halloween festival—and once again, this doctor-turned-sleuth will have to unmask a killer in their midst.

Trouble comes in threes this Halloween. Katie sees a new patient
who has just been released from prison for a murder he says he didn’t commit. Inexplicably, the patient suddenly goes missing. And matters take an even more sinister turn when a college student who had been investigating Katie’s old murder case is found dead in the woods near Baxter.

Could Katie’s involvement with the case be responsible for the student’s violent death? Is her new patient truly a cold-blooded murderer? Is this Halloween about to become a real-life horror show? Katie embarks on a desperate race to find the truth in Do No Harm, the second gripping Dr. Katie LeClair mystery. (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Katie is a smart caring woman. She is a doctor in a small town and she cares about her patients. When one of them is being harassed after returning to town when he got out of prison, she is concerned about his safety. But when a college student, who was investigating the crime that her patient got sent away for, disappears, Katie does not know what is going on and who is guilty. She has her work cut out for her, trying to put the pieces together.

The writing style flows smoothly and defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing, and because of these descriptions pulled me into the story and took me on a suspenseful ride. The mystery was well plotted and had plenty of suspects to consider and clues to sift through.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted mystery. I really enjoyed this book and getting to know Katie.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Crooked Lane Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Somehow I missed the first in this new series which surprised me because I have read her other series and enjoyed it. Now to get my hands on the previous mystery. Do No Harm works well as a stand alone. I had no trouble following all of the characters and their back stories. Each was well drawn and were people I felt I would like to know.
Katie has her hands full with her clinic schedule taking a hit now that they are without one of the doctors. She manages to juggle patients with the help of her staff but one patient focuses on her after she cares for him and shows him kindness and respect. Eugene has just been released from prison after serving 10 years for manslaughter, a crime he says he didn't commit. When he is beaten up, more than once, he seeks help from Katie for more than medical care. She isn't eager to get involved in a closed case or any case, for that matter but fate forces her hand when the young woman who had been shadowing her at the clinic goes missing. Concerned, Katie asks around when she finds out that she may have been the last person to have seen her alive. When she turns up murdered, the connection is made between the two deaths and Katie, along with her brother, Caleb and her boyfriend, Matt, start to track down the real killer.
Katie isn't one of those amateur sleuths who think they know more than the local police. Baxter is a small town but it has a very good police chief and he respects Katie's intelligence - they get along well. That was refreshing. The small town setting was well developed and the mystery was complicated enough to keep me engaged. So much so that I read it in one sitting. I will be adding the next mystery in this series to my must read list.

Dr. Katie LeClair has recently finished her residency and is settling into her work at Baxter Family Medicine in Michigan. Her relationship with Dr. Matt Gregor is going well and she and her brother's house-sharing arrangement is working out great for both of them. Katie begins treating a new patient who has just been released from prison after serving over ten years for manslaughter. He insists he is innocent and is being tormented by local residents who think he should still be paying for the crime. Although something seems off about him, Katie wants to believe Eugene. However, when a local girl with some ties to Eugene goes missing, she isn't sure what to believe. With the help of her computer guru brother, Caleb, Katie is determined to get to the bottom of this troubling case.

"Do No Harm" is the second in this series. I enjoyed the first book, but liked this one even more. I don't think anyone new to the series would have any troubles diving right into this book. Katie is a great main character. She is clever and determined and always tries to do the right thing. I find it interesting that Katie is brave enough to take on a murderer but won't speak up to a local tyrant who oversees an event planning committee on which she volunteers. She is logical and thorough in her investigation and uses the same technique to organize her thoughts on the crime and suspects as she would when talking to a patient during an examination.

The medical clinic setting is unique for a cozy series and I really like it. I also like the realistic relationship between Katie and her brother and their realistic, teasing banter. He may kid around with her, but he's the first one there when Katie needs his computer expertise to research potential suspects in both an old case and in the current missing person case Katie's relationship with Matt is also good, but they don't share enough important scenes in this book. Another positive of the series is the local police chief isn't portrayed as a bumbling fool. John Carlson is competent and fair and gives consideration to Katie's theories. I'm less enthusiastic about Katie's best friend Gabrielle who jumps from relationship to relationship, but hopefully her good points will shine through if there are future books.

The book is well-written and suspenseful. Although there aren't any huge surprises, there are enough suspects to keep the story interesting from beginning to end. There isn't a fairy tale ending to the story, but I like how things are resolved by the end of the book. I hope there are more books to come in this series. I would love to read more about Katie's professional and personal life in future installments.

I received this book from NetGalley through the courtesy of Crooked Lane. The book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.

Do No Harm started out as an intriguing mystery with an exceptional cast of characters. It, however, fell short at the end. The author paints the reader a picture of a wild university party twelve years ago that ended up with a murdered girl being found in one of the quads. Eugene was found standing over the body of the girl and was sentenced to prison. Fast-forward to present day and Eugene is released from prison, maintaining his innocence. People start harassing him and physically assaulting him and he ends up finding a friend in Dr. Katie LeClaire. Meanwhile, a student named Taylor goes missing. Dr. LeClaire was very close to Taylor and realizes that Taylor’s disappearance may be connected to the crime that Eugene was convicted of many years ago. She started investigating the case and is soon very close to finding out what really happened that night. The story follows a fairly swift pace and one particular character is singled out as being very, very suspicious. In the blink of an eye, the story seems to take a sharp turn and ends very abruptly. I felt the end was rushed and the explanation as to the why was not explained very well. The story was a good one but made a quick splat at the end.

This is the second Dr. Leclair mystery. I have read the first in series and enjoyed it very much. This book can be read as a stand alone. Dr. Katie is a very likable character and a small town doctor . She lives and works in Baxter Michigan. She is well liked by the town and has a good practice treating patients.

She starts seeing a new patient, Eugene, who was recently released from prison . Eugene finds himself being harassed by locals and his Mother is harassed as well. The locals are trying to drive him out of town when he finds himself the prime suspect in the disappearance of another girl . He is adamant he is innocent. Katie who was investigating the case that sent him to prison a decade before wants to help him and steps up to investigate the girls murder to find out the truth. .

The sleuth was well crafted with many clues and possible suspects. I enjoy the small town and the authors true deception of small town life. This is a enjoyable mystery series with a believable protagonist. Thank you for the ARC which does not influence my review. I look forward to the next in series.

Dr. Katie LeClair has settled nicely in to her practice in Baxter, Michigan. Her relationship with Dr. Matt Gregor is progressing nicely and she and her brother, Caleb, are settled in their new home. She should have known that life was going too smooth when her new patient, Eugene, shows signs of abuse. Eugene was just recently released from prison and it seems as if someone is trying to run him out of town. Vandalism at his home has gradually progressed to more serious acts. Who wants him out of town? Who does he think is following him? Meanwhile, Taylor, a young med student that Katie was mentoring goes missing. Taylor was checking in to a murder that happened ten years ago, believing that the wrong person was convicted and that the real murderer is still out there. Could she have been talking about Eugene’s conviction? This is an enjoyable small-town mystery with a killer who is hiding in plain sight. Will Katie be able to put the pieces together or will she be the next target? I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to give an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
